The EUV emission spectra in the wavelength range 110–1900 Å of the 5 September 1973 flare observed with the NRL slit spectrograph on Skylab are studied. The results are: (1) The chromospheric and transition-zone lines are greatly enhanced during the flare. In particular, the allowed lines are enhanced more than the intersystem lines. The Ni ii and P ii lines show the greatest enhancement with a factor of 800 increase in intensity. Other lines such as O i, C i, Si iii, S iii, S iv, O iv, O v, and N v show increases in intensity 10–100 times during the flare. (2) The chromospheric lines, although greatly enhanced during the flare, maintain their sharp and gaussian profiles and are not appreciably broadened. The transition zone lines, on the other hand, show a red-shifted component during the initial phase of the flare. The deduced downward velocity in the transition zone is 50 km s–1. In addition, there are large turbulent mass motions. The downward mass motion is probably caused by the pressure imbalance between the flare hot plasma at 13 × 106 K and the cooler plasma at 105 K. (3) The density of the 105 K flare plasma, as deduced from density-sensitive lines, is greater than 1012 cm-3. The depth of the 105 K plasma in the flare transition zone is only of the order of 0.1 km, giving a steep temperature gradient. Consideration of the energy balance between the conductive flux and the radiative energy losses shows that, indeed, the high density in the transition zone requires that its thickness be very small. This is a consequence of the maximum radiative efficiency at the temperature around 105 K in the solar plasma.Ball Brothers Research Corporation.  相似文献

The fine structure of the time variations of microwave and hard X-ray emissions from the solar flare of November 5, 1992 was analyzed. On the basis of the wavelet analysis, pulsations of intensity with a period of about 6 s were revealed in both the data sets. The observed time delay between the coronal plasma emission measure maximum and the temperature maximum is consistent with the concept of chromospheric evaporation. The anticorrelation observed between the time profiles of the microwave and hard X-ray emissions and the nature of the time delays between the peaks are associated with the excitation of radial fast magneto-acoustic oscillations in the flare loop (a coronal trap). Consequences of the obtained results are discussed.  相似文献

The X-ray spectrum of the quiet Sun in the energy range 2.3–6.9 keV was observed from an Aerobee rocket using an uncollimated graphite crystal spectrometer. These results and spatial measurements made with an onboard modulation collimator are analyzed using solar models. Several methods of estimating coronal temperatures are used in the analysis and all yield results within the range (4±l) × l06K.  相似文献

The solar flare of 1969 March 30, occurring 20° behind the west limb, produced very extensive 80 MHz radio emission at the Sun, and gave rise to the deployment of cosmic radiation over 360°long, in interplanetary space. The wide spread of this event may reflect a similar spread of coronal magnetic fields from the flare site. We interpret the solar proton data recorded by spacecraft at two separate points both at 1 AU, in terms of a two-component injection of particles at the Sun consisting of: (i) a soft component which arrived promptly; (ii) a harder component which arrived later. The radio spectral and positional data provide evidence of shock waves which propagated far and wide from the flare; we attribute the precursor injection of the soft ( 10 MeV) proton component to one of these shock waves.Radiophysics Publication RPP 1590, May, 1972.Now at University of California, LASL, Los Alamos, N.M., U.S.A.  相似文献

The temporal histories of three intense and impulsive gamma-ray flares, for which also white-light emission had been observed, are analyzed in order to test the role of high-energy particles- electrons and protons - in powering the optical continuum. By comparing the light curves at optical wavelengths and at X-ray and gamma-ray energies, we find a good correlation of the main peaks of emission, which confirms previous findings that the continuum emission is most likely associated with the energy loss of energetic particles. The power carried by the greater-than-50 keV nonthermal electrons may be sufficient to balance the optical emission. The power residing in protons or ions with energies greater than 1 MeV depends largely on the spectral shape of the particle distribution. Only if this is similar to a power law, may the energy carried by these high-energy particles be sufficient to balance the white-light flare emission.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. Data on X-,γ-ray, optical and radio emission from the 1991 June 15 solar flare are considered. We have calculated the spectrum of protons that producesγ-rays during the gradual phase of the flare. The primary proton spectrum can be described as a Bessel-function-type up to 0.8 GeV and a power law with the spectral index ≈3 from 0.8 up to 10 GeV or above. We have also analyzed data on energetic particles near the Earth. Their spectrum differed from that of primary protons producingγ-ray line emission. In the gradual phase of the flare additional pulses of energy release occurred and the time profiles of cm-radio emission andγ-rays in the 0.8–10 MeV energy band and above 50 MeV coincided. A continuous and simultaneous stochastic acceleration of the protons and relativistic electrons at the gradual phase of the flare is considered as a natural explanation of the data.  相似文献

Using the line profiles of [Fe x] 6374 å and [Fe XIV] 5303 å emission lines observed during five total solar eclipses, we address the problem whether the solar corona is static or contains moving features. Many of the profiles of both emission lines have complicated shapes, which we interpret as an evidence for the existence of many, small, moving features in the corona. The line-of-sight velocities observed by other investigators (e.g. Desai, Chandrasekhar & Angreji 1982) also support this view. On the other hand, about 15 recent interferometric and multislit investigations of coronal emission lines have not shown evidence of moving elements. We suggest that this is due to insufficient spatial resolution.  相似文献

Strong (“kilogauss”) small-scale magnetic fields were detected outside a sunspot near the seismic source of the major X17.2/4B solar flare on October 28, 2003. Echelle Zeeman spectrograms of the flare were obtained with the horizontal solar telescope at the Astronomical Observatory of the Taras Shevchenko Kiev National University. Analysis of the Stokes I ± V profiles for the Fe I 5232.9, 5247.1, 5250.2, and 5397.1 Å lines has revealed a number of characteristic spectral features. These are indicative of both background fields with a strength of ≈300 G and small-scale fields with a strength of 1300–3100 G. Evidence for the presence of another small-scale field component of opposite polarity with a strength of 8–10 kG has been found. A redshift (downflow) with a velocity of 1 km s?1 was observed in the latter component.  相似文献

The Very Large Array (VLA) and the frequency agile interferometer at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) were used to observe the M8.1 flare of 23 June, 1988. The VLA obtained images prior to and during the flare at 333 MHz, and at 1.5 and 4.7 GHz. The frequency agile interferometer at Owens Valley obtained interferometer amplitude and total power spectra of the flare at 45 frequencies between 1 and 18 GHz. The observations were supplemented by radiometer measurements made by the USAF RSTN network site at Palehua, HI, by GOES soft X-ray observations, by USAF SOON H filtergrams, and by a KPNO photospheric magnetogram. The radio data reveal a wide variety of phenomena, including: (i) a multiply impulsive microwave burst that is essentially thermal in character; (ii) stationary discrete components at 1.5 GHz, associated temporally and spatially with distant brightenings in Ha; (iii) a dynamical component at 1.5 GHz associated with hot plasma moving subsonically into the corona; (iv) the appearance of intense, short-lived, decimetric burst activity near the lead sunspot in the active region at 1.5 GHz, indicative of a high degree of inhomogeneity in the source. The unusually complete radio coverage allows us to investigate the transport of energy from the initial site to sites of distant H brightenings. The transport of energy appears to be most consistent with slow, thermal processes, rather than rapid transport by nonthermal electron beams.  相似文献

Simultaneous observations of a solar limb flare in the X-ray and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum are presented. Temporal and spectral X-ray observations were obtained for the 25–300 keV range while temporal, spectral, and spatial X-ray observations were obtained for the 30–0.3 keV range. The ultraviolet observations were images with a 10 spatial resolution in the lines of O v (T e 2.5 × 105 K) and Fe xxi (T e 1.1 × 107 K). The hard X-ray and O v data indicate that the impulsive phase began in the photosphere or chromosphere and continued for several minutes as material was ejected into the corona. Impulsive excitation was observed up to 30 000 km above the solar surface at specific points in the flare loop. The Fe xxi observations indicate a preheating before the impulsive phase and showed the formation of hot post-flare loops. This later formation was confirmed by soft X-ray observations. These observations provide limitations for current flare models and will provide the data needed for initial conditions in modeling the concurrent coronal transient.  相似文献

Gamma-ray emission extending to energies greater than 2 GeV and lasting at least for two hours as well as 0.8–8.1 MeV nuclear line emission lasting 40 min were observed with very sensitive telescopes aboard the GAMMA and CGRO satellites for the well-developed post-flare loop formation phase of the 3B/X12 flare on June 15, 1991. We undertook an analysis of optical, radio, cosmic-ray, and other data in order to identify the origin of the energetic particles producing these unusual gamma-ray emissions. The analysis yields evidence that the gamma-rays and other emissions, observed well after the impulsive phase of the flare, appear to be initiated by prolonged nonstationary particle acceleration directly during the late phase of the flare rather than by a long-term trapping of energetic electrons and protons accelerated at the onset of the flare. We argue that such an acceleration, including the acceleration of protons up to GeV energies, can be caused by a prolonged post-eruptive energy release following a coronal mass ejection (CME), when the magnetic field above the active region, strongly disturbed by the CME eruption, relaxes to its initial state through magnetic reconnection in the coronal vertical current sheet.  相似文献

The M7.7 solar flare of July 19, 2012, at 05:58 UT was observed with high spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions in the hard X-ray and optical ranges. The flare occurred at the solar limb, which allowed us to see the relative positions of the coronal and chromospheric X-ray sources and to determine their spectra. To explain the observations of the coronal source and the chromospheric one unocculted by the solar limb, we apply an accurate analytical model for the kinetic behavior of accelerated electrons in a flare. We interpret the chromospheric hard X-ray source in the thick-target approximation with a reverse current and the coronal one in the thin-target approximation. Our estimates of the slopes of the hard X-ray spectra for both sources are consistent with the observations. However, the calculated intensity of the coronal source is lower than the observed one by several times. Allowance for the acceleration of fast electrons in a collapsing magnetic trap has enabled us to remove this contradiction. As a result of our modeling, we have estimated the flux density of the energy transferred by electrons with energies above 15 keV to be ~5 × 1010 erg cm?2 s?1, which exceeds the values typical of the thick-target model without a reverse current by a factor of ~5. To independently test the model, we have calculated the microwave spectrum in the range 1–50 GHz that corresponds to the available radio observations.  相似文献

A wavelength list is presented for the solar flare of 7 September, 1973 in the spectral range 1335 Å–380 Å. The ions observed suggest a range of temperatures in the flare plasma from 8 × 103 K to 107 K. This wavelength range contains many of the important electron density diagnostics lines for the solar transition zone and corona. The line list should also be of potential use in the identification and comparison with stellar spectra.  相似文献

In recent years radiation has been observed from planets, Sun and stars that is best explained by the cyclotron maser instability; in fact, all celestial bodies that might feasibly emit and be detected by their cyclotron maser radiation have been detected. Here we review those observations, the developments in the theory, the recent work on the effiency of energy transfer by cyclotron maser radiation, and some recent and future observations that might demonstrate whether the mechanism is energetically important in solar and stellar flares.

A study of the March 30, 1969 solar flare event is presented utilizing data obtained from the world-wide network of neutron monitors. Although, to a good first approximation, the solar flare radiation displayed a high degree of isotropy at the orbit of the earth, it is deduced that a small anisotropy from East of the earth-sun line was present at the time of maximum enhancement of the event. This small deduced anisotropy does not, however, preclude the use of a method, based on isotropic particle propagation, to calculate the rigidity spectral index of the flare-induced radiation. Use of such a method determines the differential rigidity spectral index to be 3.9 ± 0.1.This work was supported by the Atmospheric Sciences Section of the National Science Foundation, NSF Grant GA-10940.Formerly Southwest Center for Advanced Studies.  相似文献

The flare plasma temperature calculated from GOES-11 (1.5–12.4 and 3.1–24.8 keV) data is compared with the solar nonthermal fluxes in various energy ranges in the December 6, 2006 event. Particle acceleration and plasma heating episodes took place in the pre-flare and impulsive phases; a hard (ACS SPI > 150 keV) X-ray emission was observed 5 min before the onset of the GOES X-ray flare and was not accompanied by a temperature rise. A close correlation has been found between the flare plasma temperature and the hard X-ray intensity. The temperature delayed by 0.4 min turned out to be directly proportional to the logarithm of the ACS SPI count rate within the first 3 min of the impulsive phase. This shows that the accelerated electrons responsible for the X-ray emission were the main plasma heating source in the pre-flare and impulsive phases. The correlation between the temperature and the hard X-ray intensity disappears after the observation of a resonance peak at a frequency of 245 MHz. Significant electron fluxes may no longer be able to effectively heat the expanding plasma when its density in the interaction region reaches ∼109 cm−3. The observations of the July 23, 2002 and December 5, 2006 events confirm the trends found.  相似文献

Recent observations of soft X-ray emission from solar-type stars obtained with the Einstein X-Ray Observatory indicate that X-ray luminosity is inversely correlated with stellar age. If this result is applied to the Sun and if X-ray emission is a valid indicator of other manifestations of solar activity, then past solar wind and flare levels can be inferred. It can qualitatively explain the excess xenon and nitrogen found in the lunar regolith compared to the level expected from the comteporary solar wind. X-Ray emission from T Tauri and other low-mass pre-main-sequence stars is both highly luminous and variable, indicating the presence of flares ~4 × 103 times stronger than the largest flares seen in the contemporary Sun. The proton flux from such solar flares during the 106 to 107-year pre-main-sequence phase would be sufficient to account for the 26Al anomaly n meteorites.  相似文献

Results are presented for several theoretical line ratios in Nev involving transitions between multiplets in the 2s 22p 2 and 2s2p 3 configurations. A comparison of these with solar data from the S082A and S-055 instruments on board Skylab reveals generally good agreement between theory and experiment, especially in the case of the high-resolution (S082A) observations. However the 2s 22p 2 1 D – 2s2p 3 1 P (365.6 Å) and 2s 22p 2 3P – 2s2p 3 3 S (359 Å) lines appear to be blended, possibly with transitions in Fex and Fexi/Fexiii, respectively. We note that the intensity ratio I(365.6 Å)/I(416.2 Å) should be a valuable calibration check for a high-resolution extreme ultraviolet instrument in the spectral range 360–420 Å.  相似文献

We consider temporal, spectral, and polarization parameters of the hard X-ray and gamma-ray radiation observed during the solar flare of May 20, 2002, in the course of experiments with the SONG and SPR-N instruments onboard the Coronas-F spacecraft. This flare is one of the most intense gamma-ray events among all of the bursts of solar hard electromagnetic radiation detected since the beginning of the Coronas-F operation (since July 31, 2001) and one of the few gamma-ray events observed during solar cycle 23. A simultaneous analysis of the Coronas-F and GOES data on solar thermal X-ray radiation suggests that, apart from heating due to currents of matter in the the flare region, impulsive heating due to the injection of energetic electrons took place during the near-limb flare S21E65 of May 20, 2002. These electrons produced intense hard X-ray and gamma-ray radiation. The spectrum of this radiation extends up to energies ≥7 MeV. Intense gamma-ray lines are virtually unobservable against the background of the nonthermal continuum. The polarization of the hard X-ray (20–100 keV) radiation was estimated to be ≤15–20%. No significant increase in the flux of energetic protons from the flare under consideration was found. At the same time, according to ACE data, the fluxes of energetic electrons in interplanetary space increased shortly (~25 min) after the flare.  相似文献
