Late Jurassic organic-rich shales from Shabwah sub-basin of western Yemen were analysed based on a combined investigations of organic geochemistry and petrology to define the origin, type of organic matter and the paleoenvironment conditions during deposition. The organic-rich shales have high total sulphur content values in the range of 1.49–4.92 wt. %, and excellent source rock potential is expected based on the high values of TOC (>7%), high extractable organic matter content and hydrocarbon yield exceeding 7000 ppm. The high total sulphur content and its relation with high organic carbon content indicate that the Late Jurassic organic-rich shales of the Shabwah sub-basin were deposited in a marine environment under suboxic-anoxic conditions. This has been evidenced from kerogen microscopy and their biomarker distributions. The kerogen microscopy investigation indicated that the Late Jurassic organic-rich shales contain an abundant liptinitic organic matter (i.e., alginite, structureless (amorphous organic matters)). The presence of alginite with morphology similar to the lamalginite alga and amorphous organic matter in these shale samples, further suggests a marine origin. The biomarker distributions also provide evidence for a major contribution by aquatic algae and microorganisms with a minor terrigenous organic matter input. The biomarkers are characterized by unimodal distribution of n-alkanes, low acyclic isoprenoids compared to normal alkanes, relatively high tricyclic terpanes compared to tetracyclic terpanes, and high proportion of C27 and C29 regular steranes compared to C28 regular sterane. Moreover, the suboxic to anoxic bottom water conditions as evidenced in these Late Jurassic shales is also supported based on relatively low pristane/phytane (Pr/Ph) ratios in the range of 0.80–1.14. Therefore, it is envisaged here that the high content of organic matter (TOC > 7 wt.%) in the analysed Late Jurassic shales is attributed to good organic matter (OM) preservation under suboxic to anoxic bottom water conditions during deposition.  相似文献

Kimmeridgian organic-rich shales of the Madbi Formation from the Marib-Shabowah Basin in western Yemen were analysed to evaluate the type of organic matter, origin and depositional environments as well as their oil-generation potential. Results of the current study establishes the organic geochemical characteristics of the Kimmeridgian organic-rich shales and identifies the kerogen type based on their organic petrographic characteristics as observed under reflected white light and blue light excitation. Kerogen microscopy shows that the Kimmeridgian organic-rich shales contain a large amount of organic matter, consisting predominantly of yellow fluorescing alginite and amorphous organic matter with marine-microfossils (e.g., dinoflagellate cysts and micro-foraminiferal linings). Terrigenous organic matters (e.g., vitrinite, spores and pollen) are also present in low quantities. The high contributions of marine organic matter with minor terrigenous organic matter are also confirmed by carbon isotopic values. The organic richness of the Kimmeridgian shales is mainly due to good preservation under suboxic to relatively anoxic conditions, as indicated by the percent of numerous pyritized fragments associated with the organic matter. The biomarker parameters obtained from mass spectrometer data on m/z 191 and m/z 217 also indicate that these organic-rich shales contain mixed organic matter that were deposited in a marine environment and preserved under suboxic to relatively anoxic conditions. The Kimmeridgian organic-rich shales thus have high oil and low gas-generation potential due to oil window maturities and the nature of the organic matter, with high content of hydrogen-rich Type II and mixed Type II-III kerogens with minor contributions of Type III kerogen.  相似文献

The temporal and spatial distribution of total and organic particulate matter is investigated in the Bideford River estuary. Particulate matter is homogenously distributed in both the water column and the surface sediment, due to high rates of resuspension and lateral transport. The measured mean sedimentation rate for the estuary is 183·5 g of particulate matter m?2 day?1, of which more than half is due to resuspension. The surface sediment of the estuary is quantitatively the dominant reservoir of organic matter, with an average of 902·5 g of particulate organic carbon (POC) m?2 and 119·5 g of particulate organic nitrogen (PON) m?2. Per unit surface area, the sediment contains 450 times more POC and 400 times more PON than the water column. Terrestrial erosion contributes high levels of particulate matter, both organic and inorganic, to the estuary from the surrounding watershed. Low rates of sediment export from the estuary result in the accumulation of the terrigenous material. The allochthonous input of terrigenous organic matter masks any relationship between the indigenous plant biomass and the organic matter. In the water column, a direct correlation exists between the organic matter, i.e. POC and PON, concentration and the phytoplankton biomass as measured by the plant pigments. Resuspension is responsible for the residual organic matter in the water column unaccounted for by the phytoplankton biomass. The particulate content of the water column and the surface sediment of the estuary is compared to that of the adjacent bay. Water-borne particulate matter is exported from the estuary to the bay, so that no significant differences in concentration are noted. The estuarine sediment, however, is five to six times richer in organic and silt-clay content than the bay sediment. Since sediment flux out of the estuary is restricted, the allochthonous contribution of terrigenous particulate matter to the bay sediment is minor, and the organic content of the bay sediment is directly correlated to the autochthonous plant biomass.  相似文献

Significant oil and gas accumulations occur in and around Lougheed Island, Arctic Canada, where hydrocarbon prospectivity is controlled by potential source rock distribution and composition. The Middle to Upper Triassic rocks of the Schei Point Group (e.g. Murray Harbour and Hoyle Bay formations) contain a mixture of Types I and II organic matter (Tasmanales marine algae, amorphous fluorescing bituminite). These source rocks are within the oil generation zone and have HI values up to 600 mg HC/g Corg. The younger source rocks of the Lower Jurassic Jameson Bay and the Upper Jurassic Ringnes formations contain mainly gas-prone Type II/III organic matter and are marginally mature. Vitrinite reflectance profiles suggest an effective geothermal gradient essentially similar to the present-day gradient (20 to 30°C/km). Maturation gradients are low, ranging from 0.125 to 0.185 log%Ro/km. Increases in subsidence rate in the Early Cretaceous suggest that the actual heat flow history was variable and has probably diminished from that time. The high deposition rates of the Christopher Formation shales coincide with the main phase of rifting in Aptian-Albian times. Uplift and increased sediment supply in the Maastrichtian resulted in a new sedimentary and tectonic regime, which culminated in the final phase of the Eurekan Orogeny. Burial history models indicate that hydrocarbon generation in the Schei Point Group took place during rifting in Early Cretaceous, long before any Eurekan deformation.  相似文献

The increase of total organic carbon content of the late Oligocene-early Miocene terrigenously-dominated marine shales in the shallower depth intervals was reported in the Ying-Qiong Basin, South China Sea. The organic enriched lower Sanya Formation shales(early Miocene) have biomarker characteristics of tropical/subtropical plants, with abundant high molecular weight n-alkanes, angiosperm-derived oleanane, rearranged oleananes Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅱ, tricyclic/tetracyclic terpanes including des-A-oleanane, X, ...  相似文献

We have conducted elemental, isotopic, and Rock-Eval analyses of Cenomanian–Santonian sediment samples from ODP Site 1138 in the southern Indian Ocean to assess the origin and thermal maturity of organic matter in mid-Cretaceous black shales found at this high-latitude location. Total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations range between 1 and 20 wt% in black to medium-gray sediments deposited around the Cenomanian–Turonian boundary. Results of Rock-Eval pyrolysis indicate that the organic matter is algal Type II material that has experienced modest alteration. Important contributions of nitrogen-fixing bacteria to the amplified production of organic matter implied by the high TOC concentrations is recorded in δ15N values between −5 and 1‰, and the existence of a near-surface intensified oxygen minimum zone that favored organic carbon preservation is implied by TOC/TN ratios between 20 and 40. In contrast to the marine nature of the organic matter in the Cenomanian–Turonian boundary section, deeper sediments at Site 1138 contain evidence of contributions land-derived organic matter that implies the former presence of forests on the Kerguelen Plateau until the earliest Cenomanian.  相似文献

To study the sedimentary environment of the Lower Cambrian organic-rich shales and isotopic geochemical characteristics of the residual shale gas, 20 black shale samples from the Niutitang Formation were collected from the Youyang section, located in southeastern Chongqing, China. A combination of geochemical, mineralogical, and trace element studies has been performed on the shale samples from the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation, and the results were used to determine the paleoceanic sedimentary environment of this organic-rich shale. The relationships between total organic carbon (TOC) and total sulfur (TS) content, carbon isotope value (δ13Corg), trace element enrichment, and mineral composition suggest that the high-TOC Niutitang shale was deposited in an anoxic environment and that the organic matter was well preserved after burial. Stable carbon isotopes and biomarkers both indicate that the organic matter in the Niutitang black shales was mainly derived from both lower aquatic organisms and algaes and belong to type I kerogen. The oil-prone Niutitang black shales have limited residual hydrocarbons, with low values of S2, IH, and bitumen A. The carbon isotopic distribution of the residual gas indicate that the shale gas stored in the Niutitang black shale was mostly generated from the cracking of residual bitumen and wet gas during a stage of significantly high maturity. One of the more significant observations in this work involves the carbon isotope compositions of the residual gas (C1, C2, and C3) released by rock crushing. A conventional δ13C1–δ13C2 trend was observed, and most δ13C2 values of the residual gases are heavier than those of the organic matter (OM) in the corresponding samples, indicating the splitting of ethane bonds and the release of smaller molecules, leading to 13C enrichment in the residual ethane.

The Akyaka section in the central Taurus region in the southern part of Turkey includes the organic matter and graptolite-rich black shales which were deposited under dysoxic to anoxic marine conditions in the Early Silurian. A biostratigraphical analysis, based on graptolite assemblages, indicates that the sediments studied may well be referable to the querichi Biozone and early Telychian, Llandovery. A total of 15 samples have been subjected to Leco and Rock-Eval pyrolysis and graptolite reflectance measurements for determination of their source rock characteristics and thermal maturity. The total organic carbon content of the graptolite-bearing shales varies from 1.75 to 3.52 wt% with an average value of 2.86 wt%. The present Rock-Eval pyrolytic yields and calculated values of hydrogen and oxygen indexes imply that the recent organic matter type is inert kerogen. The measured maximum graptolite reflectance (GRmax %) values are between 5.04% and 6.75% corresponding to thermally over maturity. This high maturity suggests a deep burial of the Lower Silurian sediments resulting from overburden rocks of Upper Paleozoic to Mesozoic Upper Cretaceous and Middle-Upper Eocene thrusts occurred in the region.  相似文献

Structural analysis of the Indian Merge 3D seismic survey identified three populations of normal faults within the Exmouth Sub-basin of the North West Shelf volcanic margin of Australia. They comprise (1) latest-Triassic to Middle Jurassic N-NNE-trending normal faults (Fault Population I); (2) Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous NE-trending normal faults (Fault Population II); and (3) latest-Triassic to Early Cretaceous N-NNE faults (Fault Population III). Quantitative evaluation of >100 faults demonstrates that fault displacement occurred during two time periods (210–163 and 145–138 Ma) separated by ∼20 Myr of tectonic quiescence. Latest Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (145–138 Ma) evolution comprises magmatic addition and contemporaneous domal uplift ∼70 km wide characterised by ≥ 900 m of denudation. The areally restricted subcircular uplift centred on the southern edge of the extended continental promontory of the southern Exmouth Sub-basin supports latest Jurassic mantle plume upwelling that initiated progradation of the Barrow Delta. This polyphase and bimodal structural evolution impacts current hydrocarbon exploration rationale by defining the nature of latest Jurassic to Early Cretaceous fault nucleation and reactivation within the southern Exmouth Sub-basin.  相似文献

Upper Jurassic organic matter-rich, marine shales of the Mandal Formation have charged major petroleum accumulations in the North Sea Central Graben including the giant Ekofisk field which straddles the graben axis. Recent exploration of marginal basin positions such as the Mandal High area or the Søgne Basin has been less successful, raising the question as to whether charging is an issue, possibly related to high thermal stability of the source organic matter or delayed expulsion from source to carrier. The Mandal Formation is in part a very prolific source rock containing mainly Type II organic matter with <12 wt.-% TOC and HI < 645 mg HC/g TOC but Type III-influenced organofacies are also present. The formation is therefore to varying degrees heterogeneous. Here we show, using geochemical mass balance modelling, that the petroleum expulsion efficiency of the Mandal Formation is relatively low as compared to the Upper Jurassic Draupne Formation, the major source rock in the Viking Graben system. Using maturity series of different initial source quality from structurally distinct regions and encompassing depositional environments from proximal to distal facies, we have examined the relationship between free hydrocarbon retention and organic matter structure. The aromaticity of the original and matured petroleum precursors in the Mandal source rock plays a major role in its gas retention capacity as cross-linked monoaromatic rings act on the outer surface of kerogen as sorptive sites. However, oil retention is a function of both kerogen and involatile bitumen compositions. Slight variations in total petroleum retention capacities within the same kerogen yields suggest that texture of organic matter (e.g. organic porosity) could play a role as well.  相似文献

The amount and type of organic matter present in an exceptionally complete upper Aptian to lower Cenomanian sequence of sediments from ODP site 763 on the Exmouth Plateau has been determined. Organic carbon concentrations average 0.2%. Organic matter is marine in origin, and its production and preservation was low over the ca. 20-million-year interval recorded by this sequence. Because this section was tectonically isolated from mainland Australia in the early Aptian, it better represents global oceanic conditions than the many basin-edge locations in which Albian-age black shales have been found. Formation of the basin-edge black shales evidently resulted from rapid, turbiditic burial of organic matter rather than from enhanced oceanic production or from basin-wide anoxia during the Albian.  相似文献

Temporal variations and spatial distribution of sedimentary organic matter composition were investigated over a one year period in an intertidal flat of the NW Spain. Sediment samples were collected from 0 to 25 cm depth, every three months, from January 1997 to January 1998 at three tidal levels (high, medium and low). Changes in the elemental and biochemical composition were assessed to gather information on temporal and spatial fluctuations in quantity and quality of sedimentary organic matter potentially available to benthic deposit-feeder nutrition. Organic matter content was significantly higher at the medium tidal level, while minimum values were found at the high tidal level. The different biochemical classes of organic compounds exhibited different temporal patterns. Carbohydrate and lipid concentrations decreased with sediment depth. The biopolymeric fraction of organic carbon (i.e. the sum of lipid, carbohydrate and protein carbon) was dominated by proteins (61%), followed by lipids (26%) and carbohydrates (14%). Biopolymeric carbon accounted for only a small fraction (37% on average) of the total organic carbon. Refractory organic carbon (i.e. non biopolymeric) accounted for 50 to 80% of the total organic carbon and it tended to be buried into deeper sediment layers. The nutritional quality of the sedimentary organic matter, expressed as the biopolymeric carbon to total organic carbon ratio, was higher in January 1997, when also the higher protein to carbohydrate ratio values were observed and related to the presence of newly-produced organic matter. Low biopolymeric carbon to total organic carbon ratio and protein to carbohydrate ratio were recorded during the rest of the year, indicating a low-quality and aged organic matter. Results of the present study revealed an inverse relationship between the overall amount of organic matter and its potential availability to consumers.  相似文献

As a result of a long-lasting and complex geological history, organic-matter-rich fine-grained rocks (black shales) with widely varying ages can be found on Ukrainian territory. Several of them are proven hydrocarbon source rocks and may hold a significant shale gas potential.Thick Silurian black shales accumulated along the western margin of the East European Craton in a foreland-type basin. By analogy with coeval organic-matter-rich rocks in Poland, high TOC contents and gas window maturity can be expected. However, to date information on organic richness is largely missing and maturity patterns remain to be refined.Visean black shales with TOC contents as high as 8% and a Type III-II kerogen accumulated along the axis of the Dniepr-Donets rift basin (DDB). They are the likely source for conventional oil and gas. Oil-prone Serpukhovian black shales accumulated in the shallow northwestern part of the DDB. Similar black shales probably may be present in the Lviv-Volyn Basin (western Ukraine).Middle Jurassic black shales up to 500 m thick occur beneath the Carpathian Foredeep. They are the likely source for some heavy oil deposits. TOC contents up to 12% (Type II) have been recorded, but additional investigations are needed to study the vertical and lateral variability of organic matter richness and maturity.Lower Cretaceous black shales with a Type III(-II) kerogen (TOC > 2%) are widespread at the base of the Carpathian flysch nappes, but Oligocene black shales (Menilite Fm.) rich in organic matter (4–8% TOC) and containing a Type II kerogen are the main source rock for oil in the Carpathians. Their thermal maturity increases from the external to the internal nappes.Oligocene black shales are also present in Crimea (Maykop Fm.). These rocks typically contain high TOC contents, but data from Ukraine are missing.  相似文献

Continental shelves play a major role as transition zone during transport of multiply-sourced organic matter into the deep sea. In order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the origin and fractionation processes of organic matter at the NW Iberian margin, 40 surface sediment samples were analyzed for a structurally diverse range of lipid biomarkers, lignin phenols, grain size distribution, organic carbon content (TOC), its stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13CTOC), and the organic carbon to nitrogen ratio (TOC/TN). The biomarker inventory reflected a heterogeneous mixture of organic matter from various marine and terrestrial sources. Soil- and vascular plant-derived continental organic matter, indicated by lignin phenols and plant-derived triterpenoids, was primarily associated with the silt fraction and transported by river run-off. The spatial distribution patterns of higher plant-derived waxes, long-chain n-alkanes, n-alcohols, and n-fatty acids suggested distinct different transport mechanisms and/or sources. The branched tetraether index, a molecular proxy expressing the relative abundance of branched dialkyl tetraethers vs. crenarchaeol and considered to signal soil-derived organic matter, was not as sensitive as the other molecular indicators in detecting continental organic matter. Hydrodynamic sorting processes on the shelf resulted in a separation of different types of terrestrial organic matter; grass and leaf fragments and soil organic matter were preferentially transported offshore and deposited in areas of lower hydrodynamic energy. Algal lipid biomarker distributions indicated a complex community of marine plankton contributing to organic matter. Spatial and seasonal patterns of phytoplankton growth primarily controlled the distribution of algal organic matter components. The interplay of all of these processes controls production, distribution, and deposition of organic matter and results in three distinct provinces at the Galicia–Minho shelf: (I) fresh marine organic matter dominated the inner shelf region; (II) high inputs of terrestrial organic matter and high TOC content characterized the mid-shelf deposited mudbelt; (III) lower concentrations of relatively degraded organic matter with increased proportions of refractory terrestrial components dominated the outer shelf and continental slope.

This article reviews the abnormal characteristics of shale gases (natural gases produced from organic-rich shales) and discusses the cause of the anomalies and mechanisms for gas enrichment and depletion in high-maturity organic-rich shales. The reported shale gas geochemical anomalies include rollover of iso-alkane/normal alkane ratios, rollover of ethane and propane isotopic compositions, abnormally light ethane and propane δ13C values as well as isotope reversals among methane, ethane and propane. These anomalies reflect the complex histories of gas generation and associated isotopic fractionation as well as in-situ “mixing and accumulation” of gases generated from different precursors at different thermal maturities. A model was proposed to explain the observed geochemical anomalies. Gas generation from kerogen cracking at relatively low thermal maturity accounted for the increase of iso-alkane/normal alkane ratios and ethane and propane δ13C values (normal trend). Simultaneous cracking of kerogen, retained oil and wet gas and associated isotopic fractionation at higher maturity caused decreasing iso-alkane/normal alkane ratios, lighter ethane and propane δ13C and corresponding conversion of carbon isotopic distribution patterns from normal through partial reversal to complete reversal. Relatively low oil expulsion efficiency at peak oil generation, low expulsion efficiency at peak gas generation and little gas loss during post-generation evolution are necessary for organic-rich shales to display the observed geochemical anomalies. High organic matter richness, high thermal maturity (high degrees of kerogen-gas and oil-gas conversions) and late-stage (the stage of peak gas generation and post-generation evolution) closed system accounted for gas enrichment in shales. Loss of free gases during post-generation evolution may result in gas depletion or even undersaturation (total gas content lower than the gas sorption capacity) in high-maturity organic-rich shales.  相似文献

Ever since a breakthrough of marine shales in China, lacustrine shales have been attracting by the policy makers and scientists. Organic-rich shales of the Middle Jurassic strata are widely distributed in the Yuqia Coalfield of northern Qaidam Basin. In this paper, a total of 42 shale samples with a burial depth ranging from 475.5 m to 658.5 m were collected from the Shimengou Formation in the YQ-1 shale gas borehole of the study area, including 16 samples from the Lower Member and 26 samples from the Upper Member. Geochemistry, reservoir characteristics and hydrocarbon generation potential of the lacustrine shales in YQ-1 well were preliminarily investigated using the experiments of vitrinite reflectance measurement, maceral identification, mineralogical composition, carbon stable isotope, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, methane isothermal adsorption and rock eval pyrolysis. The results show that the Shimengou shales have rich organic carbon (averaged 3.83%), which belong to a low thermal maturity stage with a mean vitrinite reflectance (Ro) of 0.49% and an average pyrolytic temperature of the generated maximum remaining hydrocarbon (Tmax) of 432.8 °C. Relative to marine shales, the lacustrine shales show low brittleness index (averaged 34.9) but high clay contents (averaged 55.1%), high total porosities (averaged 13.71%) and great Langmuir volumes (averaged 4.73 cm−3 g). Unlike the marine and marine-transitional shales, the quartz contents and brittleness index (BI) values of the lacustrine shales first decrease then increase with the rising TOC contents. The kerogens from the Upper Member shales are dominant by the oil-prone types, whereas the kerogens from the Lower Member shales by the gas-prone types. The sedimentary environment of the shales influences the TOC contents, thus has a close connection with the hydrocarbon potential, mineralogical composition, kerogen types and pore structure. Additionally, in terms of the hydrocarbon generation potential, the Upper Member shales are regarded as very good and excellent rocks whereas the Lower Member shales mainly as poor and fair rocks. In overall, the shales in the top of the Upper Member can be explored for shale oil due to the higher free hydrocarbon amount (S1), whereas the shales in the Lower Member and the Upper Member, with the depths greater than 1000 m, can be suggested to explore shale gas.  相似文献

Abstract

An analysis of the relationship between organic matter and liquid and plastic limits, and grain‐specific gravity of a marine sediment was accomplished by making a stepwise adjustment in the organic content of that sediment. The sample used was from Santa Barbara Basin (off southern California) and is typical of fine‐grained marine sediments: it is a clayey silt with a common suite of minerals and other constituents. During the experiment, texture and composition (except organic content) were constant; only the quantity of natural, indigenous organic matter was changed.

A strong linear relationship exists between the independent variable, the amount of organic carbon present in the sample, and the dependent variables. Liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index all increased with increasing organic content over the range studied (0.57–3.20% organic carbon). Grain‐specific gravity decreased. All had linear correlation coefficients (r) greater than |0.90| and r 2 values greater than 90%, except the plasticity index (83%).

Comparing the results of regression analyses from this and several similar studies shows that although there is good qualitative agreement, there are quantitative inconsistencies. In particular there is considerable overall variability in the regression coefficients. Among studies on marine sediments the inconsistencies are less pronounced, yet still evident. The increase in liquid limit as organic carbon increased by 1 % sediment dry weight ranged from 9 to 28% water content; in the plastic limit the range was from 4 to 18%. However, in these marine studies regression coefficients are relatively close in value in some cases, levels of significance of the regressions are high in most cases, and in all cases the relationships appear to be linear over the range of organic carbon percentage studied. Finally, we believe that a relatively clear relationship between plasticity and organic carbon begins to emerge when the latter exceeds a value of 2%.  相似文献
