We use an innovative research technique to analyze combined images from the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE). We produce a high spatial and temporal resolution simulated CDS raster or “composite” map from TRACE data and use this composite map to jointly analyze data from both instruments. We show some of the advantages of using the “composite” map method for coronal loop studies. We investigate two postflare loop structures. We find cool material (250 000 K) concentrated at the tips or apex of the loops. This material is found to be above its scale height and therefore not in hydrostatic equilibrium. The exposure times of the composite map and TRACE images are used to give an estimate of another loop’s cooling time. The contribution to the emission in the TRACE images for the spectral lines present in its narrow passband is estimated by using the CDS spectral data and CHIANTI to derive synthetic spectra. We obtain cospatial and cotemporal data collected by both instruments in SOHO Joint Observations Program (JOP) 146 and show how the combination of these data can be utilized to obtain more accurate measurements of coronal plasmas than if analyzed individually. A mechanism of damped oscillations of a coronal loop is investigated. The loop is treated as a thin toroidal flux rope with two stationary photospheric footpoints, carrying both toroidal and poloidal currents. The forces and the flux-rope dynamics are described within the framework of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The main features of the theory are the following: i) Oscillatory motions are determined by the Lorentz force that acts on curved current-carrying plasma structures and ii) damping is caused by drag that provides the momentum coupling between the flux rope and the ambient coronal plasma. The oscillation is restricted to the vertical plane of the flux rope. The initial equilibrium flux rope is set into oscillation by a pulse of upflow of the ambient plasma. The theory is applied to two events of oscillating loops observed by the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE). It is shown that the Lorentz force and drag with a reasonable value of the coupling coefficient (c d ) and without anomalous dissipation are able to accurately account for the observed damped oscillations. The analysis shows that the variations in the observed intensity can be explained by the minor radial expansion and contraction. For the two events, the values of the drag coefficient consistent with the observed damping times are in the range c d ≈2 – 5, with specific values being dependent on parameters such as the loop density, ambient magnetic field, and the loop geometry. This range is consistent with a previous MHD simulation study and with values used to reproduce the observed trajectories of coronal mass ejections (CMEs).  相似文献

It was suggested by Parker that the solar corona is heated by many small energy release events generally called microflares or nanoflares. More and more observations showed flows and intensity variations in nonflaring loops. Both theories and observations have indicated that the heating of coronal loops should actually be unsteady. Using SOLFTM (Solar Flux Tube Model), we investigate the hydrodynamics of coronal loops undergoing different manners of impulsive heating with the same total energy deposition. The half length of the loops is 110 Mm, a typical length of active region loops. We divide the loops into two categories: loops that experience catastrophic cooling and loops that do not. It is found that when the nanoflare heating sources are in the coronal part, the loops are in non-catastrophic-cooling state and their evolutions are similar. When the heating is localized below the transition region, the loops evolve in quite different ways. It is shown that with increasing number of heating pulses and inter-pulse time, the catastrophic cooling is weakened, delayed, or even disappears altogether.  相似文献

The damping of standing slow waves in hot (T>6 MK) coronal loops of semicircular shape is revisited in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. Dissipation by thermal conduction, compressive viscosity, radiative cooling, and heating are examined for nonstratified and stratified loops. We find that for typical conditions of hot SUMER loops, thermal conduction increases the period of damped oscillations over the sound-crossing time, whereas the decay times are mostly shaped by compressive viscosity. Damping from optically thin radiation is negligible. We also find that thermal conduction alone results in slower damping of the density and velocity waves compared to the observations. Only when compressive viscosity is added do these waves damp out at the same rate as the observed rapidly decaying modes of hot SUMER loop oscillations, in contrast to most current work, which has pointed to thermal conduction as the dominant mechanism. We compare the linear predictions with numerical hydrodynamic calculations. Under the effects of gravity, nonlinear viscous dissipation leads to a reduction of the decay time compared to the homogeneous case. In contrast, the linear results predict that the damping rates are barely affected by gravity.  相似文献

The observations from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) have revealed the weak dis- turbances (WDs) propagating in the fan-like coronal loops of the active region (AR 11092) at 171 ?A, 193 ?A, and 211 ?A. These WDs seem to be a common phenomenon in this part of the active region. The disturbances originate from the bright loop foot, and propagate along the loops. The observed propagation speed decreases with the increasing temperature, and varies between 40 km/s and 121 km/s, close to and less than the sound speed in coronal loops. Consid- ering the projection effect and the different angles of the loops with respect to the line of sight, this is exactly what the slow-wave model expects. The wavelet analysis shows that the periods of the WDs observed in different wavebands have no signi?cant difference, the two distinct periods, 3 min and more than 10 min, are all detected in the three EUV wavebands. Not only the coronal loops but also the sunspot region in the chromosphere exhibit intensity oscillations with a period of the order of 3 min. This result suggests that the sunspot oscillations can propagate into the corona through the chromosphere and transition region.  相似文献

We develop a new numerical code with automated feature extraction, customized for tracing of coronal loops, a method we call Oriented Coronal CUrved Loop Tracing (OCCULT), which for the first time breaks even with the results of visual tracing. The method used is based on oriented-directivity tracing of curvi-linear features, but in contrast to other general feature-extraction algorithms, it is customized for solar EUV and SXR images by taking advantage of the specific property that coronal loops have large curvature radii compared with their widths. We evaluate the performance of this new code by comparing the cumulative distribution of loop lengths, the median and maximum loop lengths, the completeness of detection, and the congruency of the detected features with other numerical codes and visual tracings. We find that the new code closely approaches the results of visual perception and outperforms the other existing numerical codes. This algorithm is useful for the 3D reconstruction of the geometry, motion, and oscillations of coronal loops, with single or stereoscopic spacecraft, as well as for modeling of the loop hydrodynamics and the coronal magnetic field.  相似文献

We investigate the damping of longitudinal (i.e., slow or acoustic) waves in nonisothermal, hot (T≥ 5.0 MK), gravitationally stratified coronal loops. Motivated by SOHO/SUMER and Yohkoh/SXT observations, and by taking into account a range of dissipative mechanisms such as thermal conduction, compressive viscosity, radiative cooling, and heating, the nonlinear governing equations of one-dimensional hydrodynamics are solved numerically for standing-wave oscillations along a magnetic field line. A semicircular shape is chosen to represent the geometry of the coronal loop. It was found that the decay time of standing waves decreases with the increase of the initial temperature, and the periods of oscillations are affected by the different initial footpoint temperatures and loop lengths studied by the numerical experiments. In general, the period of oscillation of standing waves increases and the damping time decreases when the parameter that characterises the temperature at the apex of the loop increases for a fixed footpoint temperature and loop length. A relatively simple second-order scaling polynomial between the damping time and the parameter determining the apex temperature is found. This scaling relation is proposed to be tested observationally. Because of the lack of a larger, statistically relevant number of observational studies of the damping of longitudinal (slow) standing oscillations, it can only be concluded that the numerically predicted decay times are well within the range of values inferred from Doppler shifts observed by SUMER in hot coronal loops.  相似文献

We present a procedure to extract bright loop features from solar EUV images. In terms of image intensities, these features are elongated ridge-like intensity maxima. To discriminate the maxima, we need information about the spatial derivatives of the image intensity. Commonly, the derivative estimates are strongly affected by image noise. We therefore use a regularized estimation of the derivative, which is then used to interpolate a discrete vector field of ridge points; these “ridgels” are positioned on the ridge center and have the intrinsic orientation of the local ridge direction. A scheme is proposed to connect ridgels to smooth, spline-represented curves that fit the observed loops. Finally, a half-automated user interface allows one to merge or split curves or eliminate or select loop fits obtained from this procedure. In this paper we apply our tool to one of the first EUV images observed by the SECCHI instrument onboard the recently launched STEREO spacecraft. We compare the extracted loops with projected field lines computed from near-simultaneous magnetograms measured by the SOHO/MDI Doppler imager. The field lines were calculated by using a linear force-free field model. This comparison allows one to verify faint and spurious loop connections produced by our segmentation tool and it also helps to prove the quality of the magnetic-field model where well-identified loop structures comply with field-line projections. We also discuss further potential applications of our tool such as loop oscillations and stereoscopy.  相似文献

We describe here a method to obtain the position of a coronal moving feature in a three-dimensional coordinate system based on height – time measurements applied to STEREO data. By using the height – time diagrams from the two SECCHI-COR1 coronagraphs onboard STEREO, one can easily determine the direction of propagation of a coronal mass ejection (i.e., if the moving plasma is oriented toward or away from the Earth). This method may prove to be a useful tool for space weather forecasting by easily identifying the direction of propagation as well as the real speed of the coronal mass ejections.  相似文献

Two quiescent solar prominences were observed in July 2000 from SUMER aboard SOHO and from the two German solar telescopes at Tenerife. Two‐dimensional images taken at the VTT simultaneously in the spectral lines Hβ at 4862 Å and Ca II at 8542 Å show no significant spatial variation of their pressure‐sensitive emission ratio. Slit spectra of the Ca II 8542 Å and He I 10830 Å lines obtained at the Gregory‐Coudé telescope yield 8000 K < Tkin < 9000 K and 3 km/s < Vn–th < 8 km/s. Among the various spectral ranges observed with SUMER, we first investigate the Lyman emission lines, which were fitted by Gaussians yielding reliable spectral radiances and line widths for the series members 5 < k < 18. A determination of the level population gives for the lower series members a Boltzmann temperature of 60 000 K, the higher members being over‐populated. This temperature indicates an origin of the Lyman lines from hot surroundings of the cool prominence body seen in the ground‐based data; this also holds for the ‘hotter’ SUMER lines.  相似文献

The temporal variation of a loop system that appears to be changing rapidly is examined. The analyzed data were obtained on 15 May 1999, with the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) during an observing campaign and consist of observations in the Fe ix/Fe x 171?Å and Fe xii 195?Å passbands taken at a cadence of ~10 min. The special interest in this loop system is that it looks like one expanding loop; however, careful examination reveals that the loop consists of several strands and that new loop strands become visible successively at higher altitudes and lower loop strands fade out during the one hour of our observations. These strands have different widths, densities, and temperatures and are most probably consisting of, at least, a few unresolved thinner threads. Several geometric and physical parameters are derived for two of the strands and an effort is made to determine their 3D structure based on the extrapolation of the magnetic field lines. Electron density estimates allow us to derive radiative and conductive cooling times and to conclude that these loop strands are cooling by radiation.  相似文献

We use linear analysis to simulate the evolution of a coronal loop in response to a localized impulsive event. The disturbance is modeled by injecting a narrow Gaussian velocity pulse near one footpoint of a loop in equilibrium. Three different damping mechanisms, namely viscosity, thermal conduction, and optically thin radiation, are included in the loop calculations. We consider homogeneous and gravitationally stratified, isothermal loops of varying length (50≤L≤400 Mm) and temperature (2≤T≤10 MK). We find that a localized pulse can effectively excite slow magnetoacoustic waves that propagate up along the loop. The amplitudes of the oscillations increase with decreasing loop temperature and increasing loop length and size of the pulse width. At T≥4 MK, the waves are dissipated by the combined effects of viscosity and thermal conduction, whereas at temperatures of 2 MK, or lower, wave dissipation is governed by radiative cooling. We predict periods in the range of 4.6?–?41.6 minutes. The wave periods remain unaltered by variations of the pulse size, decrease with the loop temperature, and increase almost linearly with the loop length. In addition, gravitational stratification results in a small reduction of the periods and amplification of the waves as they propagate up along the loop.  相似文献

SHASTA(Shaarp and smooth Transport Algorithm)是求解二维磁流体动力学问题的单一网格程序.

Theoretical studies of the normal modes of a coronal slab often neglect gravity, as in Edwin and Roberts (Solar Phys. 71, 239, 1982). Here we study analytically the effect of gravity acting on a horizontal slab as a first step away from a homogeneous medium. Because of the inclusion of gravity, the symmetry of a homogeneous slab is lost, so the normal modes cannot be classified into kink and sausage modes. The presence of gravity also modifies the oscillatory frequencies of the slab, as well as the lower cutoff frequency, resulting in the possible transition between surface and body modes. For general coronal parameters, the dimensionless gravity term turns out to be small, so these effects are also small. A.J. The coronal magnetic field above a particular photospheric region will vanish at a certain number of points, called null points. These points can be found directly in a potential field extrapolation or their density can be estimated from the Fourier spectrum of the magnetogram. The spectral estimate, in which the extrapolated field is assumed to be random and homogeneous with Gaussian statistics, is found here to be relatively accurate for quiet Sun magnetograms from SOHO’s MDI. The majority of null points occur at low altitudes, and their distribution is dictated by high wavenumbers in the Fourier spectrum. This portion of the spectrum is affected by Poisson noise, and as many as five-sixths of null points identified from a direct extrapolation can be attributed to noise. The null distribution above 1500 km is found to depend on wavelengths that are reliably measured by MDI in either its low-resolution or high-resolution mode. After correcting the spectrum to remove white noise and compensate for the modulation transfer function we find that a potential field extrapolation contains, on average, one magnetic null point, with altitude greater than 1.5 Mm, above every 322 Mm2 patch of quiet Sun. Analysis of 562 quiet Sun magnetograms spanning the two latest solar minima shows that the null point density is relatively constant with roughly 10% day-to-day variation. At heights above 1.5 Mm, the null point density decreases approximately as the inverse cube of height. The photospheric field in the quiet Sun is well approximated as that from discrete elements with mean flux 〈|φ|〉=1.0×1019 Mx distributed randomly with density n=0.007 Mm−2.  相似文献

The role of leaky waves in the coronal loop oscillations observed by TRACE is not yet clearly understood. In this work, the excitation of fast waves in solar coronal loops modelled as dense plasma cylindrical tubes in a uniform straight magnetic field is investigated. We study the trapped and especially leaky modes (whose energy escapes from the tube) that result from an initial disturbance by solving the time-dependent problem numerically. We find that the stationary state of the tube motion is given by the trapped normal modes. By contrast, the transient behaviour between the initial and the stationary phase is dominated by wave leakage. The so-called trig leaky modes are clearly identified since the transient behaviour shows periods and damping times that are in agreement with the values calculated from the normal-mode analysis. Consequently, these radiating modes have physical significance. However, we have not found any evidence for the excitation of other types of modes, such as the principal leaky kink mode. J. The solar irradiance in the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) spectral bands has been observed with a 15 s cadence by the SOHO Solar EUV Monitor (SEM) since 1995. During remarkably intense solar flares the SEM EUV measurements are saturated in the central (zero) order channel (0.1–50.0 nm) by the flare soft X‐ray and EUV flux. The first order EUV channel (26–34 nm) is not saturated by the flare flux because of its limited bandwidth, but it is sensitive to the arrival of Solar Energetic Particles (SEP). While both channels detect nearly equal SEP fluxes, their contributions to the count rate is sensibly negligible in the zero order channel but must be accounted for and removed from the first channel count rate. SEP contribution to the measured SEM signals usually follows the EUV peak for the gradual solar flare events. Correcting the extreme solar flare SEMEUV measurements may reveal currently unclear relations between the flare magnitude, dynamics observed in different EUV spectral bands, and the measured Earth atmosphere response. A simple and effective correction technique based on analysis of SEM count‐rate profiles, GOES X‐ray, and GOES proton data has been developed and used for correcting EUV measurements for the five extreme solar flare events of July 14, 2000, October 28, November 2, November 4, 2003, and January 20, 2005. Although none of the 2000 and 2003 flare peaks were contaminated by the presence of SEPs, the January 20, 2005 SEPs were unusually prompt and contaminated the peak. The estimated accuracy of the correction is about ±7.5% for large X‐class events. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

A statistical analysis of decimetric radio bursts (RBs), X-ray flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is carried out. We consider all radio bursts recorded by the Cracow Solar Radio Telescope from the beginning of 1996 until the end of 2004. It is found that the decimetric radio bursts are associated and strongly correlated with X-ray flares. Correlation coefficients between RBs durations and the maximal fluxes of the radio bursts and flares are found to be 0.60 and 0.87, respectively. We also demonstrated that a significant population of the decimetric radio bursts are associated with CMEs. The correlation coefficient between the maximal radio flux density multiplied by the duration of the RBs versus velocity multiplied by width of CMEs is found to be 0.55.  相似文献
