The relics of a small, monogenetic, continental-shelf, Surtseyan volcano are preserved on the North Otago coast, South Island, New Zealand, in the late Eocene-early Oligocene Waiareka-Deborah volcanics. The succession consists of two parts, i. e. a lower interval of bedded lapilli tuffs and lapillistones, representing the eruptive, aggradational-cone-building phase, and an upper epiclastic sequence, representing the post-eruptive degradational phase. All of the preserved succession appears to have been deposited below storm wave base. The lapilli tuffs and lappillistones are subaqueous fall deposits, modified contemporaneously by downslope grain flow and turbidity current redeposition, and perhaps by local reworking caused by turbulent thermal eddies. The absence of major discordances in the lapilli tuffs suggests that the active eruptive period was very short-lived, perhaps lasting only a few days. The epiclastic succession consists of redeposited volcanic, skeletal, lime mud and glauconitic detritus, transported by debris flows and other mass flows. The initial epiclastic unit, a debris flow, appears to represent the sector collapse of a significant part of the cone. The appearance of fossils and rounded clasts low in the epiclastic succession coincides with stabilisation of the top of the submarine volcanic edifice, development of a wave-planed top, and its colonisation by a diverse fauna. Periodic storm activity swept material off the platform, redepositing it as marginal talus ramps. Surtla, a wholly submarine satellite volcanic centre of the 1963–1967 eruptive activity of Surtsey, is an excellent modern analogue for both the eruptive and post-eruptive phases of the Bridge Point-Aorere Point volcanic centre. By analogy with Surtla, the 120 metres of lapilli tuffs and lapillistones exposed on Bridge Point and Aorere Point accumulated in only several days. The 25 metres of reworked, glauconitic and fossiliferous volcaniclastics, represent thousands of years based on the time required for glauconite to form.  相似文献

结合已有的地质、余震分布及地震宏观考察资料,使用全球数字地震台网(GDSN)宽频带P波数据,利用波形拟合和有限断层的全局混合反演方法研究了1996年3月19日新疆阿图什地震的震源破裂时空过程.结果表明,这次地震是发生在柯坪断裂带的哈帕雷克断层上的一次具有逆倾和较小走滑分量的由西向东单侧破裂事件.断层面的走向为252°,倾角30°,震源深度为13km,震源持续时间为15s.破裂面上的滑动分布主要由两部分构成:初始破裂0.3m对应较小上升时间0.8s;最大滑动尺度1.0m则位于沿破裂方向离初始点约25km处,相应的上升时间为3.5s.由于微观震中是指震源开始破裂的地方,而宏观震中则代表地面破坏最严重的区域,我们的反演结果解释了其他研究者得出的微观震中与宏观震中相距约30km的结论.  相似文献

The Sulitjelma Gabbro situated at 67.2°N, 15.4°E was intruded close to the Late Ordovician climax of regional metamorphism in the northern Scandinavian Caledonides. Magnetic properties have been examined from samples collected at seven localities in the south western part of this body. Total NRM directions show a tendency to be aligned near the present earth's magnetic field direction in this region. Stability to a.f. demagnetisation is low and commensurate with low Koenigsberger ratios (0.001–0.16) and the presence of unoxidised magnetite as the principal remanence carrier. After cleaning the site mean directions no longer show an alignment near the present earth's field and of six statistically significant sites three are approximately reversed with respect to remainder. The combined mean direction after cleaning isD = 195°,I = 15° (precision parameterk = 6) and the derived virtual geomagnetic pole is at 0°E, 14°S (α95 = 23°). This pole is close to poles of comparable age from the British Isles and suggests that Britain and Norway were part of the same crustal plate in Ordovician times. Discrepancies between Siluro-Devonian results from the two regions may be due to inadequate age coverage of present results.  相似文献

Intersexuality has been widely reported in crustaceans with several mechanisms being directly or indirectly held responsible for its occurrence, amongst which pollution. No mechanistic relationship between metals and intersex has ever been established. Also the incidence of intersex in populations of the same invertebrate species in a latitudinal gradient has never been studied so far. Three populations (Iceland, Scotland and Portugal) of the amphipod Echinogammarus marinus were scrutinized. Intersex females from Iceland registered the highest fecundity loss. Only in Scottish samples females with two genital papillae and males with only one genital papillae were observed. Nevertheless, water, biota and sediment samples pointed to equivalent metal levels, and in consonance the prevalence of intersex was not significantly different between locations. An unequivocal relationship between metal presence and intersex induction cannot be presented, but our results advocate the potential role of metals as a direct cause of intersexuality in E. marinus.  相似文献

The total rate of rock deformation results from competing deformation processes, including ductile and brittle mechanisms. Particular deformation styles arise from the dominance of certain mechanisms over others at different ambient conditions. Surprisingly, rates of deformation in naturally deformed rocks are found to cluster around two extremes, representing coseismic slip rates or viscous creep rates. Classical rock mechanics is traditionally used to interpret these instabilities. These approaches consider the principle of conservation of energy. We propose to go one step further and introduce a nonlinear far-from-equilibrium thermodynamic approach in which the central and explicit role of entropy controls instabilities. We also show how this quantity might be calculated for complex crustal systems. This approach provides strain-rate partitioning for natural deformation processes occurring at rates in the order of 10-3 to 10-9 s-1. We discuss these processes using examples of landslides and ice quakes or glacial surges. We will then illustrate how the mechanical mechanisms derived from these near-surface processes can be applied to deformation near the base of the seismogenic crust, especially to the phenomenon of slow earthquakes.  相似文献

断层影像(CT)的图像对比度与扫描所用的X光源能谱分布有很大关系。传统CT使用具有能谱分布的一个光源进行成像,有时会出现信息模糊致使两种不同材料在CT图像上完全相同。双能CT使用两个不同分布的能谱对物体进行成像,能够消除单能谱情况下的信息模糊。虽然双能CT的基本概念由来已久,但最近商业系统的出现使双能CT迅速成为一个热点。我们首先概述了双能CT的基本物理原理和双能信号处理方法,包括促使双能CT进入现代医学成像的关键技术。其次,双能CT的应用已非常广泛,本文从其在临床应用角度进行了详细介绍使读者有所了解。最后,我们简要探讨了当前的两个技术发展领域:光子技术探测器和技术合成CT。  相似文献

Summary The Sitka earthquake of 30 July, 1972, was a shallow strike-slip fracture of 170 km lenght and it closed a gap defined bySykes (1971). A tide gauge station, a magnetic observatory and a seismological station are located 40 km to the east of the center of the rupture. A comparison of the sea level at Sitka with that at three tide gauges up to 430 km from Sitka indicates that the sea level at Sitka remained constant for 32 years before the earthquake (standard deviation ±1.5 cm) with the exception of the years 1966 and 1967 when the land may have been elevated by 3 cm. Preliminary analysis of mean teleseismic-P-residuals suggests that aP-wave delay may have existed under the station Sitka during 1966 and 1967. The quiet annual means of the horizontal component of the magnetic field at Sitka were compared to that at College, Alaska, and Victoria, Canada, for all years since the establishment of these stations in 1941 and 1957 respectively. Starting 7.5 years before the earthquake the field differences appear to have decreased by approximately 20, gradually returning to normal the year after the earthquake.  相似文献

Marine and eolian carbonate deposits, grouped under the name “Tamala Limestone”, have been investigated along thousands of kilometers of coastal Western Australia (WA). Relative-age diagenetic features of carbonate sand dunes or “eolianites” indicate that coastal ridges decrease in age seaward, reflecting coastal accretion during successive sea-level stands. Yellow- to red-stained quartz sands are associated with eolianites as pits, lenses, extensive beds, and even 40-m-high dunes.A regional survey using whole-rock and land snail amino acid epimerization geochronology confirms the eolianite succession and provides a means of correlating widespread deposits along a steep climatic gradient and 16° of latitude. AMS 14C and uranium–thorium (U/Th) ages provide independent radiometric calibration of the amino acid ratios, and eolianite ages can be estimated using a parabolic kinetic model.Over 90% of the sampled eolianite deposits comprise Aminozones A, C, E (125 ka), F?, G, and H, and correlate with interglacials from <10 ka (Holocene) to ca. 500 ka. In contrast, at the type locality of the Tamala Limestone along the Zuytdorp Cliffs, the upper eolianite-paleosol units are characterized by advanced stages of cavernous weathering, pedogenesis, and recrystallization. In the same units, sediment and snail samples generally yield very low or non-detectable levels of amino acids. These factors along with the stratigraphic complexity of the deposits reflect an age much greater than a large majority of sites along the WA coastline. These findings encourage a revision of the existing classification and nomenclature of Quaternary carbonate deposits in WA, as well as a reexamination of the underlying mechanisms related to the formation and emplacement of both carbonate and quartz dunes.  相似文献

Groundwater remediation and no-further action decision making at petroleum underground storage tank (UST) sites has largely been based on an understanding of plume length, plume stability, and attenuation rates for key hydrocarbon constituents. Regulatory guidance to support and guide such decisions is based in part on plume studies involving individual hydrocarbon constituents, namely benzene and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). Questions remain regarding whether current guidance is applicable to chemical mixtures such as gasoline range organics (GRO), diesel range organics (DRO), and oxygen containing organic compounds (OCOCs) resulting from hydrocarbon biodegradation. To help address this concern, data from California's GeoTracker database were used to estimate maximum plume lengths, plume stability, and attenuation rates of DRO (which can be used as an analytical surrogate for OCOCs) and GRO relative to benzene and MTBE. The distributions of maximum plume lengths were similar for the four constituents with medians ranging from 27 to 32 m. The fraction of monitoring wells with a decreasing concentration trend ranged from 19% for DRO to 40% for MTBE, while fewer than 7% of the wells had an increasing concentration trend for any of the constituents. Median attenuation rates ranged from 0.10% day−1 for DRO to 0.17% day−1 for MTBE. The results suggest attenuation based risk management is appropriate for DRO and GRO plumes at most petroleum UST sites.  相似文献

A 36 tonne monolithic weighing lysimeter (3.7 m diameter and 1.5 m deep) was installed in Kioloa State Forest near Batemans Bay, New South Wales, Australia, to provide a continuous record of water use from a regenerating natural eucaplyt community, five years old at installation. The resolution is equivalent to 0.05 mm of evaporation and provides hourly information for diurnal variation of forest evaporation. The sensitivity of 14 ppm compares favourably with those reported for other lysimeters, similar in magnitude, in the U.S.A. Design criteria for selecting, isolating and suspending a sample community ‘in situ’ with an electro-mechanical balance are outlined. Procedures adopted during installation are described with emphasis placed on precautions taken to minimize disturbance and to avert possible changes in character of the isolated natural community. Lysimeter performance was assessed both in terms of its accuracy and its operation as a remote facility with infrequent attention.  相似文献
