The effect of a gravitating ring or torus on the central figure of relative equilibrium of a rotating liquid or gaseous mass is studied in the tidal approximation. A formula is derived for the increment in the square of the angular velocity of the central figure. Three models for wide rings are examined and one, for circular tori. The effects of rings on the oblateness of the planet Saturn or on the figure of the sun lie beyond the limits of modern measurements; however, the effect of a gravitating torus is already comparable to the effect of the star’s rotation in the case of the red supergiant WOH G64 in the LMC. The method is modified for galaxies; it then describes the effect of rings both on the stellar subsystem and, separately, on the diffuse subsystem. The well known NGC 4594 “Sombrero” galaxy is introduced as an example. This method may also be useful for estimating the dark mass surrounding giant E-galaxies.  相似文献

We have compiled a sample of galaxies whose flux density is higher at 12 microns (f12) than at 25 microns (f25). It is argued thatf12 >f25 effectively selects quiescent galaxies which are less active in infrared, radio, and optical bands than other types of normal galaxies. Moreover galaxies withf12 >f25 do not exhibit the well-known relations that normal galaxies show between far-infrared parameters, for example, the negative correlation betweenf12/f25 andf60/f100. These galaxies also show different far-infrared and radio properties. In our opinion this sample of quiescent galaxies is suitable for use as a control sample when properties of more active galaxies are discussed. It may also be used in modeling galaxies with active star formation or an active nucleus.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 38, No. 3, 1995.  相似文献

The 395 late-type spiral galaxies brighter than 15m in r-band are selected from the Data Release 2 of Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the colormagnitude relations of these galaxies and their disks are investigated. It is found that the colors g − r, r − z and g − z of these galaxies and their disks are strongly correlated with the r-band absolute magnitudes, i.e., the more luminous galaxies (or disks) have the redder colors than the less luminous galaxies (or disks). And the correlation of galaxies is stronger than that of their disks.  相似文献

Until recently far infrared (FIR) observations of galaxies were limited to about a dozen bright and/or active galaxies. New photometric data has become available from Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) on 33 galaxies (most of them faint) from IRAS Circular Nos. 1, 2, and 3 The FIR spectra of these galaxies are similar. The far infrared fluxF FIR in the wavelength interval 9–118 m of the brighter galaxies is seen to be correlated with the integrated optical magnitudeB T 0 . The 12 and 25 m fluxes of these galaxies exhibit the same dependence onB T 0 as the 10 and 21 m fluxes from Seyferts and other emission-line galaxies. This suggests that the galaxies detected by IRAS are some type of active galaxies in accord with the high percentage of these galaxies predicted by Lock and Rowan-Robinson (1983).  相似文献

A catalogue is given of the 179 known galaxies within 10 Mpc. The inclusion of a galaxy depends on its redshift (v0 ≤ 500 km s−1) or, in the case of 7 dwarf galaxies, on the fact that their distances are known to be small. The catalogue contains in addition 52 more distant galaxies with v0 ≤ 500 km s−1: 50 are bona fide Virgo cluster members and 2 are members of the Leo group. Positions, types, absorption-corrected luminosities, and velocities are given for the catalogue galaxies. The catalogue is believed to be nearly complete for galaxies brighter than ∽ – 18m.5, but it contains also many considerably fainter galaxies. The galaxies within 10 Mpc form the Local Group with 28 members and seven additional groups with a total of 92 known members. 59 galaxies (33%) do not seem to belong to any group.  相似文献

We have performed photometric B, V, and R observations of nine disk galaxies that presumably have abnormally low total mass-to-light (M/L) ratios for given color indices. Our data on surface photometry are used to analyze the possible causes of anomalous M/L estimates. In many cases, these can be the result of errors in photometry or rotational velocity determination but can also reflect the real peculiarities of the stellar composition of galaxies. Comparison of the photometric and dynamical disk mass estimates obtained by analyzing the rotational velocities shows that low M/L values for a given color index are probably real for some of the galaxies. This is primarily true of NGC 4826 (Sab), NGC 5347 (Sab), and NGC 6814 (Sb). The small number of such galaxies suggests that the stellar initial mass function is universal. However, a small fraction of galaxies probably may have a non-typical mass function “depleted” in low-mass stars. Such galaxies require a more careful study.  相似文献

The intergalactic extinction in FRIEDMANN (with A = o) universes homogeneously filled with dust grains is calculated assuming the extinction to be 0.5 mag at z = 1 and a λ−1 wavelength dependence. With the resulting intergalactic extinction the number of quasars which should be observed at different redshifts are estimated assuming two different luminosity functions and a density evolution of the quasars according to M. SCHMIDT (1970, 1972). The expected number of quasars decreases rapidly with increasing redshift between z = 2 and z = 3. The observed number-magnitude relation by G. A. RICHTER (1975) is well represented.  相似文献

The elliptical galaxies identified with 139 radio sources having double, wide-tail, twin-tail, or head-tail structures were examined on glass or film copies of Schmidt sky survey plates, and orientations were measured for 78 of them. The observed radio axes of well-collimated double sources are distributed over all possible orientations relative to their parent galaxies, but there is a significant preference for orientations within 30° of the projected minor axes of the galaxies. A similar minor-axis trend is found among wide-tail and twin-tail sources. The observed minor-axis peak is fairly broad. These results are consistent with either a very large dispersion in the ejection of radio components about the minor axes of oblate galaxies or a small dispersion about the equatorial planes of prolate galaxies. Other evidence indicates that both oblate and prolate radio galaxies exist. The minor-axis trend is stronger for large sources in the sample selected by Palimakaet al. (1979), but counter-examples to the minor-axis trend were found among other giant sources.  相似文献

The large-scale structures of volume-limites subsample sorted out from the CfA catalog have been analysed by percolation method. The result shows that the features in the distribution of galaxies with different luminosities are significantly different. Especially, the most luminous galaxies are likely to exhibit hierarchical clustering on a scale about 50h 50 –1 Mpc, and the least luminous galaxies in our subsamples show string-like or sheet-like character in their distribution. These results suggest that the large-scale distribution of galaxies consists of clusters or cluster cores of most luminous galaxies and the less luminous galaxies spread out from these cores with a string-like or sheet-like structure. This picture of the large-scale distribution consists with previous results from two-point correlation analysis and fractal analysis. The implication of these results has been discussed.  相似文献

Results from a spectrophotometric study of 21 galaxies with UV excess are presented. The half widths (FWHM) and equivalent widths of observed spectrum lines of these galaxies, as well as the relative intensities of the emission lines observed in the spectrum of the galaxy Kaz243, are determined. It is conjectured that the latter galaxy has the properties of an Sy2 type galaxy. The electron densities and masses of the gaseous components are found for 15 galaxies, along with the masses of 8 galaxies for which the ratio M/L has been calculated. It is shown that the spectral structures of these galaxies do not depend on whether they are members of physical systems or are isolated.  相似文献

Results from a statistical study of Kazarian galaxies and the objects surrounding them are presented. It is shown that: (1) the sample of Kazarian galaxies up to 16m.0 is complete. (2) Roughly 35.7% of the Kazarian galaxies are members of clusters, 14.0% of groups, and 13.6% of binary systems, while 36.7% are single galaxies. (3) Of the 580 Kazarian galaxies, roughly 61.2% are infrared, 8.8% radio, and 2.8% x-ray sources. (4) The relative numbers of Kazarian galaxies for complete samples of I, R, and X in the different groups are systematically higher than the corresponding numbers for samples of all Kazarian galaxies.  相似文献

We collected a sample of 100 galaxies for which different observers have determined colour indices of globular cluster candidates. The sample includes representatives of galaxies of various morphological types and different luminosities. Colour indices (in most cases (VI), but also (BI) and (CT1)) were transformed into metallicities [Fe/H] according to a relation by Kissler‐Patig (1998). These data were analysed with the KMM software in order to estimate similarity of the distribution with uni‐ or bimodal Gaussian distribution. We found that 45 of 100 systems have bimodal metallicity distributions. Mean metallicity of the metal‐poor component for these galaxies is 〈[Fe/H]〉 = –1.40 ± 0.02, of the metalrich component 〈[Fe/H]〉 = –0.69 ± 0.03. Dispersions of the distributions are 0.15 and 0.18, respectively. Distribution of unimodal metallicities is rather wide. These data will be analysed in a subsequent paper in order to find correlations with parameters of galaxies and galactic environment.  相似文献

The distribution of faint galaxies down toB=22.0 from COSMOS measurements on a deep U.K. Schmidt telescope plate is compared with stochastic simulations of fields of galaxies for a number of cluster galaxy multiplicities and cosmological models. The results support the view that the majority of galaxies are isolated in space or exist as members of pairs or triplets. Inclusion of superclustering in the simulations reduces agreement with the observations.  相似文献

Rotation curves of spiral galaxies in clusters are compared with their counterparts in the field using three criteria: (1) inner and outer velocity gradients, (2)M/L gradients, and (3) Burstein's mass type methodology. Both H emission-line rotation curves and more extendedHi rotation curves are used. A good correlation is found between the outer gradient of the rotation curve and the galaxy's distance from the centre of the cluster, in the sense that the inner galaxies tend to have falling rotation curves while the outer galaxies, and field galaxies, tend to have flat or rising rotation curves. A correlation is also found between theM/L gradient across a galaxy and the galaxy's position in the cluster, with the outer galaxies having steeperM/L gradients. Mass types for field spirals are shown to be a function of both Hubble-type and luminosity, contrary to earlier results. The statistical difference between the distribution of mass types in clusters and in the field reported by Bursteinet al. is confirmed. These correlations indicate that the inner cluster environment can strip away some fraction of the mass in the outer halo of a spiral galaxy, or alternatively, may not allow the halo to form.  相似文献

As it is known, a good number of galaxies are observed to have counterrotating cores. A popular scenario to explain the formation of such galaxies is based on a secondary process of merging of galaxies with their satellites, or gas infall, or merger events between galaxies. An alternative mechanism, proposed by Voglis et al., 1991, and by Harsoula and Voglis 1998, could also be responsible for the formation of these galaxies directly from cosmological initial conditions (direct scenario). The novel mechanism was demonstrated by using quiet cosmological initial conditions in N-body simulations. In the present paper we extend our N-body simulations using clumpy initial conditions and show that this mechanism still works to create counterrotating galaxies. Counterrotation is a result of the considerable amount of memory of initial conditions surviving for times comparable to the Hubble time, despite the large degree of instability of individual orbits and the dramatic redistribution and mixing of the particles in phase space. We show, for example, that the particles remember, in a statistical sense, not only their distance from the center of mass (memory of energy), but also the initial orientation of their position relative to the direction of an external tidal field, which determines the sign and the amount of angular momentum that is transferred to the particles of the system.  相似文献

We use optical color indices (colors) from the SDSS database to study the effect of dust in starburst galaxies by mea‐suring the dependence of colors on galaxy inclination. Starburst galaxies with ongoing star formation, are rich with metals/dust and are, therefore, an excellent objects for studying the effect of dust in galaxies. They are selected using the [O III ]λ 5007/Hα vs. [N II ]λ 6584/Hβ diagram, that is, the BPT‐diagram. We use Kauffmann's empirical demarcation line in the BPT‐diagram to exclude galaxies with active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the sample because they have different physical and dust properties from normal galaxies. The sample is divided into bins according to galaxy stellar mass and 4000 Å break (which is a coarse measure of a galaxy star formation history; SFH) and the reddening with inclination is studied as a function of these two physical parameters. Assuming that the dust effect is negligible in the SDSS z ‐band, we derive the attenuation curves for these galaxies. We fit the attenuation curves with a simple power law and use power law index to interpret the relative distribution of dust and stars in the starburst galaxies (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The fundamental plane (FP) scaling relations and their evolution are a powerful tool for studying the global properties of early-type galaxies and their evolutionary history. The form of the FP, as derived by surveys in the local Universe at wavelengths ranging from the U to the K band, cannot be explained by metallicity variations alone among early-type galaxies; systematic variations in age, dark matter content, or homology breaking are required. A large-scale study of early-type galaxies at 0.1 < z < 0.6demonstrates that the SB intercept of the FP, the rest frame (U-V) colour, and the absorption line strengths all evolve passively, thereby implying a high mean formation redshift for the stellar content. The slope of the FP evolves with redshift, which is broadly consistent with systematic age effects occurring along the early-type galaxy sequence. The implication that the least luminous early-type galaxies formed later than the luminous galaxies is discussed in the context of the evolution of thecolour–magnitude relation, the Butcher–Oemler effect and hierarchical galaxy formation models. We present the results of our analysis of the frequencies of galaxies with tidal tails and M51-type galaxies in several deep fields of the Hubble Space Telescope (HDF-N, HDF-S, HUDF, GOODS, GEMS). In total, we have found about seven hundred interacting galaxies at redshifts z ≤ 1.5 in these fields. At z ≤ 0.7, the observed space densities of galaxies with tidal structures and M51-type galaxies have been found to increase as (1 + z) m , where m ≈ 2.6. According to our estimates, over the last 6–7 Gyr, i.e., at z ≤ 0.7, about a third of the galaxies with M(B) ≤ −18 m must have undergone strong gravitational perturbations and mergers and ∼1/10−1/5 of the galaxies have swallowed relatively low-mass nearby satellites typical of M51-type galaxies. The possible decrease in the time scale on which a distant galaxy appears peculiar with growing z can increase considerably the estimated rate of mergers.  相似文献

We present CCD photometry of 16 Abell clusters and one cluster candidate found in POSS-II field 861. The images were taken at the 0.9 m Telescope at Cerro Tololo, in the g, r and i filters of the Gunn–Thuan system. We tested the idea proposed by Garilli et al. (1996) that there is a population of unusually red galaxies which could be associated with either the field or clusters. Garilli et al. (1996) suggest that these galaxies have anomalously red colours, but we find that these objects are all near the limiting magnitude of the images (20m<r<22m) and have colours that are consistent with those expected for stars or field galaxies at z∼0.7.
