Short-lived increases in the brightness of many red dwarfs have been observed for the last 30 yr, and a variety of more or less exotic models have been proposed to account for such flares. Information about flares in the Sun has progressed greatly in recent years as a result of spacecraft experiments, and properties of coronal flare plasma are becoming increasingly better known. In this paper, after briefly reviewing optical, radio and X-ray observations of stellar flares, we show how a simplified model which describes conductive plus radiative cooling of the coronal flare plasma in solar flares has been modified to apply to optical and X-ray stellar flare phenomena. This model reproduces many characteristic features of stellar flares, including the mean UBV colors of flare light, the direction of flare decay in the two-color diagram, precursors, Stillstands, secondary maxima, lack of sensitivity of flare color to flare amplitude, low flux of flare X-rays, distinction between so-called spike flares and slow flares, Balmer jumps of as much as 6–8, and emission line redshifts up to 3000 km s–1. In all probability, therefore, stellar flares involve physical processes which are no more exotic (and no less!) than those in solar flares. Advantages of observing stellar flares include the possibilities of (i) applying optical diagnostics to coronal flare plasma, whereas this is almost impossible in the Sun, and (ii) testing solar flare models in environments which are not generally accessible in the solar atmosphere.  相似文献

The effect onp-mode frequencies of a horizontal chromospheric canopy field is studied theoretically and the results compared with Libbrecht and Woodard's observations of frequency changes. Combined changes in field strength and chromospheric temperature cause frequency shifts that are similar in form to those observed. Frequency shifts inp-modes offer the possibility of signatures of solar activity cycles distinct from sunspot numbers and butterfly diagrams.  相似文献

Active regions were followed across the disk on OSO 4 spectroheliograms in the Lyman continuum (LC) and in Mg x 625. These observations indicate differential rotation with latitude, but not with height in the atmosphere. The measured equatorial sidereal rotation velocity is 14.7° ±0.2° per day in both chromospheric LC and coronal Mg x, where the quoted error is the standard deviation of a least-squares fit to the data.  相似文献

Recent observations of the Hα contrast profiles of identifiable chromospheric fine structures are interpreted in terms of an empirical model. It is shown that the parameters inferred from an application of Beckers' ‘cloud’ model are unreliable, and the problem of line asymmetries is re-examined. Quantitative models for the Hα chromosphere near the limb suggest that the ‘dark band’ phenomenon is due to low opacity in the neighbourhood of the temperature minimum, while the peculiar appearance of mottle contrast profiles near the limb is explained in terms of foreground absorption.  相似文献

The unified sight of solar and stellar activity has revealed a worthwhile concept under several aspects, gaming in the last decade the increasing favour of observers and theorists, and the term solar-stellar connection has recently been introduced to point out the complementarity of solar and stellar observations in the background of the basic role played by the magnetic field.The great development of stellar activity observations suggests a much wider scenario than it were possible to imagine even a few years ago and stimulates theoretical work, most of which is in the framework of the - dynamo theory.Although dynamo theory seems to be plausible and successful in capturing the fundamental mechanism of solar and stellar activity, several uncertainties and intrinsic limits do still exist and are discussed together with alternative or complementary suggestions.Further, it is stressed the relevance of nonlinear problems in dynamo theory — as magnetoconvection, growth and stability of flux tubes against magnetic buoyancy, hydromagnetic global dynamos — to improve our understanding of both small and large scale interaction of rotation, turbulent convection and magnetic field, and of the transition from linear to nonlinear regime. Finally, recent dynamo models of stellar activity are critically reviewed, as to the dependence of activity indexes and cycles on rotation rate and spectral type.Open problems to be solved by future work are outlined, pointing out the role of ever increasing stellar data in widening out our comprehension of the dynamo operation modes, which seem to depend on stellar structure, rotation and age.  相似文献

The emission doublet 2800 Mgii of stellar chromospheric origin is always stronger than the emission in the Lα line of hydrogen. At the same time, the ratio of their fluxes,Q=F(Mgii)/F(Lα), varies over a wide range— from 2 up to 20 in stars of one and the same type. Assuming that both emission structures, 2800 Mgii and Lα, are excited in one and the same region of the chromosphere, an attempt is made to represent the ratioQ as a function from one physical parameter only—chromospheric electron temperature. Such an approach explains easily the observed behaviour of the ratioQ in different stars.  相似文献

By comparison of photoelectric magnetograms with high resolution Hα pictures it is possible to formulate a set of rules by which the magnetic field may be derived directly from the filtergrams. This is possible because of the regularities of magnetic field configurations on the sun and because chromospheric morphology is determined by the magnetic field. Off-band pictures (preferably 0.5 Å red) show a well-defined enhanced chromospheric network, the boundaries of which coincide with the 5 G contour of longitudinal field on the Mt. Wilson magnetograms. The actual fields are presumably more concentrated along the dark structure of the network. Higher fields are marked by filled-in cells. Regions of predominantly transverse fields may be inferred from the absence of normal network structure and the presence of chromospheric fibrils. The quiet chromosphere is recognized by the presence of oscillatory motion and the absence of fibrils or strong network structure. Thus, the chromosphere may be divided into three types of regions: enhanced network, horizontal field, and quiet network. The polarity of the magnetic field may be recognized by plage-antiplage asymmetry; that is, the fact that only following magnetic fields show bright plage in the center of Hα.  相似文献

A systematic investigation was made of the K-corona immediately overlying the positions of the brightest and most isolated chromospheric plages during the years 1964–1967. In all cases, the corona was found to be enhanced with peak brightness proportional to the plage area. High-resolution filtergrams of a sunspot region observed at seven wavelengths in Hα with a resolution of 1/8 Å have been used to investigate the three-dimensional structure of the chromospheric Evershed flow and its time variation. The flow channels have the form of loops whose cross-section alters with height and distance from the spot. The loops probably reach a height of 5000 km. The presence of a compression shock is suggested by the observations. Many velocity channels appear to alter their direction with position in the line, giving the impression of a screw-like motion resembling a Beltrami flow. The flow channel alters with a characteristic time of 8±2 min. It is suggested that this relatively short time constant represents the characteristic time of perturbations of the flow channels and the superpenumbra fibrils. The lifetime of the flow channel istelf is estimated to be 70 min. The observations are discussed in terms of material moving inwards towards the spot along curved flux loops.  相似文献

We observed a C-class flare at the outer boundary of the superpenumbra of a sunspot. The flare was triggered by an emerging magnetic bipolar region that was obliquely oriented with respect to the superpenumbral fibrils. The flare started due to the low height magnetic reconnection of emerging magnetic flux with a superpenumbral field resulting in hot multi-temperature plasma flows in the inverse Evershed flow channel and its overlying atmosphere. Inverse Evershed flows in the chromosphere start from the superpenumbra towards the sunspot that end at the outer boundary of the penumbra. The hot plasma flow towards the sunspot in the inverse Evershed channels show about 10 km s~(-1) higher velocity in Hα wavelengths compared to the plasma emissions at various temperatures as seen in different AIA filters. Even though these velocities are about seven times higher than the typical inverse Evershed flow speeds, the flow is diminished at the outer boundary of the sunspot's penumbra. This suggests that the superpenumbral field lines that carry inverse Evershed flows are discontinued at the boundary where the penumbral field lines dive into the sun and these two sets of field lines are completely distinct. The discontinuity in the typical magnetic field and plasma properties at the adjoining of these two sets of field lines further leads to discontinuity in the characteristic magnetoacoustic and Alfv′en speeds, thereby stopping the plasma flows further on. The multi-temperature plasma in the inverse Evershed channels exhibits possible longitudinal oscillations initially during the onset of the flare, and later flows towards the sunspot. In the multi-temperature view, the different layers above the flare region have a mixture of supersonic as well as subsonic flows.  相似文献

A study is made of several ATM flares, to investigate the effect of soft X-ray heating at chromospheric levels. It is shown that the amount of energy released in Ly and Lyman continuum emissions, and their spatial and temporal behavior, in compact flares correspond to what is expected from model calculations. An additional source of heating, which could be heat conduction, has to be postulated to explain ribbons of enhanced L and C ii 1336 Å emission in large flares. As expected, the effect of X-ray heating is more important in small compact flares than in large ones.  相似文献

The full magnetoatmospheric wave equation is numerically solved for the particular penumbral model of Nye and Thomas (1974). For chromospheric running penumbral waves it is found that the maximum vertical velocity occurs at the base of the Hα region (z ≈ 300 km) much lower than previous WKB estimates have suggested. The maximum ‘vertical’ kinetic energy occurs at z ≈ - 130 km. Very significant horizontal velocities are also found for these waves, and, in the absence of shear flow it appears that previous estimates of photospheric vertical velocities of order 10?1 km s?1 could be substantial underestimates. For the photospheric events of Musman et al. (1976), a high vertical velocity maximum is found in the corona, and the modes appear highly dispersive for periods ≥ 220 s. The effects of a sinusoidal shear flow profile on running penumbral waves are examined, and it is found that the eigenvalues (horizontal wavenumber k) are changed little, but the eigenmodes become significantly distorted; the position of the vertical velocity peak rises compared to the zero flow case, and the velocity below that peak drops significantly. This effect may well cancel the increased estimates based on zero flow.  相似文献

Magnetic activity in the photosphere and chromosphere of the M dwarf EY Dra is studied and possible correlations between the two are investigated using photometric observations in the V and R bands and optical and near infrared spectroscopy. The longitudinal spot configuration in the photosphere is obtained from the V band photometry, and the chromospheric structures are investigated using variations in the Hα line profile and observations of the Paschen β line. The shape of the V band light‐curve indicates two active regions on the stellar surface, about 0.4 in phase apart. The spectroscopic observations show enhanced Hα emission observed close to the phases of the photometrically detected starspots. This could indicate chromospheric plages associated with the photospheric starspots. Some indications of prominence structures are also seen. We compute a new grid of plage models to determine the difference in temperature versus mass column density structure T(m) between plage regions and the quiet solar chromosphere, and to test whether the solar chromosphere is geometrically thinner in plages. We compare partial redistribution calculations of Mg ii h and k and Ca ii K to NRL Skylab observations of Mg ii h and k in six active regions and Ca ii K intensities obtained from spectroheliograms taken at approximately the same time as the Mg ii observations. We find that the plage observations are better matched by models with linear (in log m) temperature distributions and larger values of m 0 (the mass column density at the 8000 K layer in the chromosphere), than by models with larger low chromosphere temperature gradients but values of m 0 similar to the quiet Sun. Our derived temperature structures are in agreement with the grid originally proposed by Shine and Linsky, but our analysis is in contrast to the study by Kelch which implies that stellar chromospheric geometrical thickness is not affected by chromospheric activity. We conclude that either the stellar Mg ii observations upon which the Kelch study was based are of poorer quality than had been assumed, or that the spatial averaging of inhomogeneous structures, which is inherent in the stellar data, does not lead to a best fit one-component model similar in detail to that of a stellar or a solar plage.Visiting Astronomer at Kitt Peak National Observatory, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.Staff member, Quantum Physics Division, National Bureau of Standards.  相似文献

Double pass photoelectric observations are presented of five Caii lines (H, K, 8498 Å, 8542 Å, and 8662 Å) in a number of solar plages of different degrees of activity, quiet regions, and a sunspot. The data are compared with previous work. All five lines show increasing emission together in plages and the least opaque of the infrared triplet lines appears to exhibit core emission prior to the more opaque members of the multiplet.
