Imaging Spectroscopy of a Solar Filament Using a Tunable Hα Filter   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Observations using a narrow band Hα filter still remain one of the best ways to investigate the fine structures and internal dynamics of solar filaments. Hα observations, however, have been usually carried out with the peak response of the filter fixed at a single wavelength, usually at the centerline, in which the investigation is limited to the Hα morphology and its time evolution. In this paper, we demonstrate that the Hα spectroscopy that takes Hα images successively at several wavelengths is a useful tool in the study of solar filaments on the solar disk. Our observation of a filament was carried out on August 3, 2004 at Big Bear Solar Observatory using the 10-inch refractor. The Lyot Hα filter was successively tuned to five wavelengths: ?0.6, ?0.3, 0.0, +0.3, and +0.6 Å from the Hα line center. Each set of wavelength scan took 15 s. After several steps of data reduction, we have constructed a five-wavelength spectral profile of intensity contrast at every spatial point. The contrast profile at each spatial point inside the filament was reasonably well fit by the cloud model as far as the contrast is high enough, and allowed us to construct the maps of τ0, v, Δ λD and S in the filament. We also found that the line center method that is often used, always yields line-of-sight velocities that are systematically lower than the cloud model fit. Our result suggests that taking Hα images at several wavelengths using a tunable filter provides an effective way of deriving physically meaningful parameters of solar filaments. Particularly constructing the time sequence of v maps appears to be a useful tool for the study of internal dynamics, like counterstreaming, in filaments.  相似文献

We present a new survey for Hα emission objects in the Circinus cloud complex and introduce an efficient photometric method for detecting Hα emission via observations in a narrow‐band filter. The observed flux is compared to a blackbody fit of the continuum. Our search strategy reveals 20 stars with strong Hα emission (EW > 10 Å), eight of them being new detections. All Hα stars display infrared excess corroborating their youth. On the other hand, the region contains a number of infrared excess objects that do not show Hα emission. Our results support the picture that accretion – as witnessed by Hα emission – is a highly variable phenomenon. Therefore, Hα surveys can only trace the temporarily active objects. In contrast, infrared excess is a more robust tracer that reveals most of the population of young stellar objects in a star forming region. Our analysis of the general stellar content of the region yields a reliable distance of 450 pc for the Circinus cloud. Moreover, we find a ratio of total‐to‐selective extinction of RV = 2.8 suggesting that smaller‐than‐normal dust grains may be present. (© 2013 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We analyse the properties of the 1.4 GHz continuum emission in 52 star‐forming compact luminous galaxies (LCGs). The fluxes of the 1.4 GHz thermal (free‐free) component are derived from the extinction‐ and aperture‐corrected fluxes of the Hα emission line. The fraction of the thermal 1.4 GHz emission is shown tobe in the range of 2–52 % with a median value of about 15–17 %, and its distribution is close to a log‐normal one. Both the thermal and non‐thermal radio continuum luminosities are shown to be proportional to the masses of the young stellar population of the LCGs. We discuss the approximation of the ratio of the 1.4 GHz luminosity‐to‐the mass of the young stellar population as a function of starburst age. The derived approximation is shown to be similar but less clearly defined compared to ones obtained previously for LCGs from their Hα and UV continuum luminosities. In this paper I have derived the primitive function of the transmission function of the Lyot filter, hence a formula for calculating its integrated transmission. I have then derived the limit, as the filter order tends to infinity of the ratio between the transmissions through the main band and the whole filter. I have given a rigorous demonstration of the conservation of the integrated transmission of the tunable Lyot birefringent filter, discovered previously from numerical calculation by HU and AI, [1]. Lastly, I have proposed a method of measuring the total amount of light outside the main band of filters.  相似文献

We present an image of T Tauri N reconstructed from speckle interferometry observations made at the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii telescope (CFHT). Two spectral windows, at Hα [6540-6580 Å] and red continuum [6580-6840 Å] were used. The star is unresolved in the continuum (θ ≤ 0″038), setting an upper limit for its size of ≤ 5.3 AU (assuming a 140 pc distance). At Hα (continuum subtracted) two components are observed, an unresolved one with 70% of the Hα flux and a resolved 0″106 × 0″043 (15 × 6 AU) with 30 %. The extended component is elongated in the North-South direction. The extended Hα component scale, it's non-detection in the continuum, and TTau Hα profile shape suggest that the extension is a disk corona.  相似文献

抚仙湖1 m红外太阳望远镜的重要终端之一是多通道高分辨成像系统,主要由两路宽带和一路窄带成像系统组成。目前窄带成像系统的工作谱线为Hα。主要介绍了窄带成像系统扫描轮廓的检测和修正。主要检测内容包括扫描轮廓的中心波长位置、扫描轮廓对称性、前置滤光片对扫描轮廓的影响、滤光器工作温度稳定性等问题。检测结果显示:扫描轮廓在656.281-0.15 nm到656.281+0.4 nm的范围内与理论轮廓较好地吻合,而在656.281-0.15 nm到656.281-0.4 nm的范围内明显衰减。同时轮廓中心波长位置(即强度最低点的波长位置)相对于滤光器显示的"0 nm"偏带点蓝移了0.013 nm。针对上述检测结果,将滤光器的工作温度提高了约0.3℃。在温度调整之后,扫描轮廓的整体特征不变,轮廓中心波长位置与"0 nm"偏带点偏差小于0.004 nm,同时红蓝翼对称偏带点的强度差异小于10%(对应1.8 km/s的多普勒速度测量误差)。目前可以明确,扫描轮廓的蓝翼衰减是由前置滤光片造成,对于常用工作范围(656.281±0.1 nm),可以忽略前置滤光片的影响。滤光器工作温度比较稳定,1个月内温度变化幅度的标准方差约0.001 7℃。目前,该滤光器仍存在的问题是扫描轮廓在"0 nm"偏带点略有突起,幅度在6%~8%。建议在以后的使用过程中,需要定期定量地对滤光器的扫描轮廓以及前置滤光片的透过率曲线进行检测。  相似文献

Ground-based observations at near-infrared wavelengths are severely affected by atmospheric OH bands. Many authors have recognized the potential gains in sensitivity from suppressing these features. Dispersive instruments show some promise but are both expensive and complicated to build. OH suppression filters using single or periodic notches have the advantage of simplicity but significant gains have not yet been realized.   Rugate filters (with graded index inhomogeneous coatings) offer key advantages for astronomical imaging. It is possible to produce a transmission profile comprising a series of irregular and sharply defined bandpasses. We demonstrate through numerical simulation of rugate filters that it should be possible to achieve 95 per cent suppression of the OH features in the J photometric band, while retaining roughly half of the spectral coverage. This would lead to extraordinary gains in sensitivity even for observations of continuum sources. In addition, these filters allow longer exposures before the detector saturates on the sky background. I - and z -band filters can also be envisaged.   In 1-arcsec seeing, a J -band rugate filter used in conjunction with a 4-m telescope would detect a J  = 23 continuum source at 5.0σ in a single 10-min exposure. In comparison, a conventional J filter requires multiple exposures for a 10-min integration time and achieves only a 2.5σ detection. For emission-line sources, the rugate filter has an even bigger advantage over conventional filters, with a fourfold increase in signal-to-noise ratio possible in certain instances.   Astrophysical studies that could benefit from rugate filters are searches for very low-mass stars and galaxy evolution out to z  = 3.  相似文献

The discussion of the H double limb had reached the point where the question of its existence as a real solar phenomenon could not be resolved without new observations made with the Lockheed filter and the Mount Wilson spectroheliograph. A study of the instrumental profiles had indicated that there was sufficient off-band light to produce the observed inner limb step in the Mount Wilson instrument, but this analysis was not completely satisfactory because of limitations inherent in the measurement of instrument functions with a Hg-198 source. The instrumental profile work did indicate, however, that the spectral purity of the instruments in question could be substantially improved by the use of narrow-band interference filters. An experimental program was thus launched to determine the effect of such a blocking filter on the appearance of the H limb. The results of these observations with three Halle filter systems and the Mount Wilson spectroheliograph are that the inner limb completely disappears at the center of H when a blocking filter is used to reduce unwanted light, which originates at wavelengths beyond ±0.8 Å. In addition, the contrast and visibility of the chromospheric fine structure is increased by eliminating the off-band light. Thus the experiment conclusively demonstrates that the apparent inner limb is not a solar feature but is due entirely to instrumental parasitic light.  相似文献

We present the results of our tests of an acousto-optical imaging spectrophotometer with a CCD detector for astronomical observations. The tunable acousto-optical filter, based on a paratellurite single crystal with a 13 Å pass band operates in the wavelength range 6300–11000 Å. We obtained image spectra for the planetary nebula NGC 7027 in the Hα line and for Saturn in the methane absorption band, as well as Hα and continuum images for the nuclear region of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068.  相似文献

We have made observations of the four hyperfine transitions of the 2Π3/2,     ground state of OH at 1612, 1665, 1667 and 1720 MHz and the related 1.6-GHz continuum emission towards NGC 6334 using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The observations covered all the major radio continuum concentrations aligned along the axis of NGC 6334 (V, A to F). We have detected seven OH masers plus a possible faint eighth maser; two of these masers are located towards NGC 6334-A. Absorption at 1665 and 1667 MHz was detected towards almost all the continuum distribution. All transitions show non-LTE behaviour. The 1667-/1665-MHz intensity ratios range from 1.0 to 1.2, significantly less than their LTE value of 1.8. The results of the OH 'Sum Rule' suggest that this discrepancy cannot be explained solely by high optical depths. The 1612- and 1720-MHz line profiles show conjugate behaviour whereby one line is in absorption and the other in emission. In addition, the profiles commonly showed a flip from absorption to emission and vice versa, which is interpreted as a density gradient. The OH line-to-continuum distribution, optical depth and velocity trends are consistent with a bar-like shape for the molecular gas which wraps around the continuum emission.  相似文献

The recent observations of solar flares, made with a Lyot filter and a spectrograph in Hα, HeD3, higher Balmer lines, metallic lines, and continuum, are discussed. It is important to study the energy supply of non thermal particle/ conduction/ irradiation into the lower atmosphere from the optical observations with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Simultaneous observations from ground-based observatories and instruments on board satellites are necessary for understanding flare plasma of low and high energy.

The instrumental profile of a Lyot-filter with 0.5 Å pass-band for H has been determined from photographic spectra obtained with a large grating spectrograph and a continuous light source.After fine adjustment of the filter, the transmission profile in parallel light agrees closely with the theoretical profile as given by crystal optics. The peak transmission has been found to be 12% of the incident unpolarized radiation.Convolving the measured instrumental profile with the average solar spectral distribution near H, it can be shown that the parasitic light (transmission outside the main pass-band) contributes 10% to the total light flux with the filter centered on the line. At wavelength shifts of 0.5 and 0.8Å, the parasitic light contribution is 25% and 40%, respectively.The deformation of the line-profile of various solar phenomena (faculae, filaments, flares) by the instrumental profile is discussed quantitatively.Mitteilungen aus dem Fraunhofer Institut Nr. 82.  相似文献

Image-tube filter photographs calibrated against photoelectric filter photometry have been used to give maps of M42 in absolute flux units over the central 15 arc min of the nebula in Hα, [Nii] (λ 6584 Å), Hβ and continuum at λ 4700 Å. Maps of the ratios Hα/[Nii] and (for the first time) of continuum/Hβ have been produced with unprecedented spatial resolution. These show that the gas to dust ratio is high near the exciting stars and falls strongly in the vicinity of large scale ionization fronts marked by minima in the Hα/[Nii] ratio. These results are interpreted in terms of detailed shell models containing either ice or graphite or silicate scattering particles. In all models there must be a central hole in the distribution of scattering particles. The effect of neutral globules and intrusions is investigated. It is found that all types of grain are trapped inside neutral intrusions near the centre of the nebula by the pressure of the Lα light surrounding the globule, but in the early evolution of the nebula particles can escape into the ionized medium when fronts are R-type. Ice grains escaping at this time will be destroyed for distances to the exciting stars less than 1 pc. These results can explain both the central hole in dust and the underabundance of oxygen in the ionized gas observed earlier. Arguments depending on colour index of the scattered light indicate that mixtures of scattered light from ice in the globules and from ice in the ionized medium can explain the observations, but that the graphite and silicate particles fail. A schematic model of the Orion Nebula is presented to attempt to explain the large scale phenomena observed here. It demonstrates that simple shell models for this nebula are dubious.  相似文献

We present results of photometric observations under excellent seeing conditions of Shakbazian Compact Groups. We obtained the seeing‐unconvolved surface brightness profiles of individual galaxies in the I band. We also determined the BI color index for each galaxy, and investigated the presence of cores in the early type galaxies. We constructed models for the mass distribution of the individual galaxies. Spectropolarimetric observations of a sunspot were carried out with the Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter at Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife, Spain. Maps of the physical parameters were obtained from an inversion of the Stokes profiles observed in the infrared Fe I line at 15648 Å The regular sunspot consisted of a light bridge which separated the two umbral cores of the same polarity. One of the arms of the light bridge formed an extension of a penumbral filament which comprised weak and highly inclined magnetic fields. In addition, the Stokes V profiles in this filament had an opposite sign as the sunspot and some resembled Stokes Q or U. This penumbral filament terminated abruptly into another at the edge of the sunspot, where the latter was relatively vertical by about 30°. Chromospheric Hα and He II 304 Å filtergrams revealed three superpenumbral fibrils on the limb‐side of the sunspot, in which one fibril extended into the sunspot and was oriented along the highly inclined penumbral counterpart of the light bridge. An intense, elongated brightening was observed along this fibril that was co‐spatial with the intersecting penumbral filaments in the photosphere. Our results suggest that the disruption in the sunspot magnetic field at the location of the light bridge could be the source of reconnection that led to the intense chromospheric brightening and facilitated the supply of cool material in maintaining the overlying superpenumbral fibrils. The spectroscopic analysis of systems with transiting planets gives strong constraints on planetary masses and radii as well as the chemical composition of the systems. The properties of the system OGLE‐TR‐10 are not well‐constrained, partly due to the discrepancy of previous measurements of the effective temperature of the host star. This work, which is fully independent from previous works in terms of data reduction and analysis, uses the Hα profile in order to get an additional constraint on the effective temperature. We take previously published UVES observations which have the highest available signal‐to‐noise ratio for OGLE‐TR‐10. A proper normalization to the relative continuum is done using intermediate data products of the reduction pipeline of the UVES spectrograph. The effective temperature then is determined by fitting synthetic Hα profiles to the observed spectrum. With a result of Teff = 6020 ± 140 K, the Hα profile clearly favours one of the previous measurements. The Hα line is further consistent with dwarf‐like surface gravities as well as solar and super‐solar metallicities previously derived for OGLE‐TR‐10.The Hα line could not be used to its full potential, partly because of the varying shape of the UVES échelle orders after flat field correction. SPHERE (which stands for Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch) is a second-generation Very Large Telescope (VLT) instrument dedicated to high-contrast direct imaging of exoplanets whose first-light is scheduled for 2011. Within this complex instrument one of the central components is the apodized Lyot coronagraph (ALC). The principal aim of this paper is to report the first laboratory experiment of the ALC designed for the SPHERE instrument. The performance and sensitivity of the optical configuration was first numerically studied with an end-to-end approach (see the results in paper I subtitled ??Detailed numerical study??). Made confident by the results, we then tested a prototype on an infrared coronagraphic bench. We measured the transmission profiles of the apodizer prototype and the coronagraphic performance of the apodized Lyot coronagraph in Y, J, and H bands. The coronagraph sensitivity to lateral and longitudinal misalignments of its three main components (apodizer, coronagraphic mask and Lyot stop) was finally studied in H band. We can conclude that the prototype meets the SPHERE technical requirements for coronagraphy.  相似文献

We present a spatial analysis of the soft X‐ray and Hα emissions from the outflow of the starburst galaxy M82. We find that the two emissions are tightly correlated on various scales. The O VII triplet of M82, as resolved by X‐ray grating observations of XMM‐Newton, is dominated by the forbidden line, inconsistent with the thermal prediction. The O VII triplet also shows some spatial variations. We discuss three possible explanations for the observed O VII triplet, including the charge exchange at interfaces between the hot outflow and neutral cool gas, a collisional non‐equilibrium‐ionization recombining plasma, and resonance scattering (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
