Background

Urban trees have long been valued for providing ecosystem services (mitigation of the “heat island” effect, suppression of air pollution, etc.); more recently the potential of urban forests to store significant above ground biomass (AGB) has also be recognised. However, urban areas pose particular challenges when assessing AGB due to plasticity of tree form, high species diversity as well as heterogeneous and complex land cover. Remote sensing, in particular light detection and ranging (LiDAR), provide a unique opportunity to assess urban AGB by directly measuring tree structure. In this study, terrestrial LiDAR measurements were used to derive new allometry for the London Borough of Camden, that incorporates the wide range of tree structures typical of an urban setting. Using a wall-to-wall airborne LiDAR dataset, individual trees were then identified across the Borough with a new individual tree detection (ITD) method. The new allometry was subsequently applied to the identified trees, generating a Borough-wide estimate of AGB.

Results

Camden has an estimated median AGB density of 51.6 Mg ha–1 where maximum AGB density is found in pockets of woodland; terrestrial LiDAR-derived AGB estimates suggest these areas are comparable to temperate and tropical forest. Multiple linear regression of terrestrial LiDAR-derived maximum height and projected crown area explained 93% of variance in tree volume, highlighting the utility of these metrics to characterise diverse tree structure. Locally derived allometry provided accurate estimates of tree volume whereas a Borough-wide allometry tended to overestimate AGB in woodland areas. The new ITD method successfully identified individual trees; however, AGB was underestimated by ≤?25% when compared to terrestrial LiDAR, owing to the inability of ITD to resolve crown overlap. A Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis identified assigning wood density values as the largest source of uncertainty when estimating AGB.

Conclusion

Over the coming century global populations are predicted to become increasingly urbanised, leading to an unprecedented expansion of urban land cover. Urban areas will become more important as carbon sinks and effective tools to assess carbon densities in these areas are therefore required. Using multi-scale LiDAR presents an opportunity to achieve this, providing a spatially explicit map of urban forest structure and AGB.

Increasing concern for biodiversity conservation at species level resulted in the development of cost effective tools for getting information at larger scale. Modeling distribution of species using remote sensing and geographic information has already proved its potentials to get such information with less effort. Pittosporum eriocarpum Royle is an endemic and threatened tree species of Uttarakhand, yet till now its regional distribution is poorly known. This study using geospatial modelling tools indentified several localities of potential occurrence of this species in the Mussoorie hills and Doon valley, and also provides information on its habitat specificity. The main objective of the study is to predict the suitable habitats for endangered plant species in Himalayan region using logistic regression model where availability of sufficient data on species presenceabsence is a major limitation for larger areas.  相似文献

Tree species information is crucial for digital forestry, and efficient techniques for classifying tree species are extensively demanded. To this end, airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has been introduced. However, the literature review suggests that most of the previous airborne LiDAR-based studies were only based on limited kinds of tree signatures. To address this gap, this study proposed developing a novel modular framework for LiDAR-based tree species classification, by deriving feature parameters in a systematic way. Specifically, feature parameters of point-distribution (PD), laser pulse intensity (IN), crown-internal (CI) and tree-external (TE) structures were proposed and derived. With a support-vector-machine (SVM) classifier used, the classifications were conducted in a leave-one-out-for-cross-validation (LOOCV) mode. Based on the samples of four typical boreal tree species, i.e., Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, Populus tremula and Quercus robur, tests showed that the accuracies of the classifications based on the acquired PD-, IN-, CI- and TE-categorized feature parameters as well as the integration of their individual optimal parameters are 65.00%, 80.00%, 82.50%, 85.00% and 92.50%, respectively. These results indicate that the procedures proposed in this study can be used as a comprehensive but efficient framework of proposing and validating feature parameters from airborne LiDAR data for tree species classification.  相似文献

We present new methods for analyzing geo-referenced statistical data. These methods combine visualization and direct manipulation techniques of exploratory data analysis and algorithms for data mining. The methods have been implemented by integrating two hitherto separate software tools: Descartes for interactive thematic mapping, and the data mining toolbox Kepler. In using these tools, data analysis may proceed as a steady interaction between visual inspiration and insights gained from mathematical–statistical calculations. After introducing the various components of the methods and tools, the paper guides the reader through in-depth examples of using the tools in the context of analysis of urban demographic data. In particular, it is shown how geography-based classifications of urban districts can be related to available thematic characteristics by applying the data mining algorithms classification tree derivation, attribute weighting, and subgroup discovery.  相似文献

Abstract

Individual tree crown segmentation is important step for deriving various information for fine-scale analysis of ecological process. However, only several studies have applied tree crown segmentation in tropical forest ecosystems, especially in mixed peat swamp forests. In this study, hyperspectral data were used to detect changes in the biochemical and biophysical characteristics, which are important factors for tree crown segmentation. Principal Component Analysis method was performed to investigate its influence on crown segmentation. Visually Selected PCs, 160 PCs and 160 Spectral Bands image were used and two segmentation techniques; Watershed Transformation and Region Growing segmentation were applied on those images. The highest accuracy was achieved for the crown segmentation is using Region Growing segmentation, based on 1:1 measurement, D value and RMSE value. The results obtained from 160 PCs image using region growing algorithm shows better accuracy with D value of 0.2 (80% accuracy, 20% error) and RMSE of 9.9 m2.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this geo-statistical analysis of change detection, we illustrate the evolution of the built-up environment in Shanghai at the street-block level. Based on two TerraSAR-X image stacks with 36 and 15 images, covering the city centre of Shanghai for the time period from 2008 to 2015, a set of coherence images was created using a small baseline approach. The road network from Open Street Map, a volunteered geographic information product, serves as the input dataset to create street-blocks. A street-block is surrounded by roads and resembles a ground parcel, a real estate property – a cadastral unit. The coherence information is aggregated to these street-blocks for each observation and the variation is analysed over time. An analysis of spatial autocorrelation reveals clusters of similar behaviours. The result is a detailed map of Shanghai highlighting areas of change. We argue that the aggregation and grouping of synthetic aperture radar coherence image information to real-world entities (street-blocks) is comprehensible and relevant to the urban planning process. Therefore, this research is a contribution to the community of urban planners, designers, and government agencies who want to monitor the development of the urban landscape.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Forests of the Sierra Nevada (SN) mountain range are valuable natural heritages for the region and the country, and tree height is an important forest structure parameter for understanding the SN forest ecosystem. There is still a need in the accurate estimation of wall-to-wall SN tree height distribution at fine spatial resolution. In this study, we presented a method to map wall-to-wall forest tree height (defined as Lorey’s height) across the SN at 70-m resolution by fusing multi-source datasets, including over 1600 in situ tree height measurements and over 1600?km2 airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. Accurate tree height estimates within these airborne LiDAR boundaries were first computed based on in situ measurements, and then these airborne LiDAR-derived tree heights were used as reference data to estimate tree heights at Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) footprints. Finally, the random forest algorithm was used to model the SN tree height from these GLAS tree heights, optical imagery, topographic data, and climate data. The results show that our fine-resolution SN tree height product has a good correspondence with field measurements. The coefficient of determination between them is 0.60, and the root-mean-squared error is 5.45?m.  相似文献

Object-based shadow detection in urban areas is an important topic in very high resolution remote sensing image processing. Multi-resolution segmentation (MRS) is an effective segmentation method, and is used for object-based shadow detection. However, several input parameters within MRS may result in unstable performance for final shadow detection; thus, the evaluation and optimization for the parameters upon the final shadow detection accuracy cannot be overlooked. In this paper, the three parameters in MRS (scale s, weight of colour wcolor and weight of compactness wcompact) upon the final result of a recently proposed method, object-based shadow detection with Dempster–Shafer theory, were evaluated and optimized by sensitivity analysis and Taguchi’s method with three experimental data. Experiments show that scale s is the most sensitive parameter among the three parameters within MRS. More importantly, according to the Taguchi’s method theory, there is a very significant interaction effect between s and wcolor, which cannot be overlooked. The shadow detection accuracy yielded by the optimum parameter combination in consideration of the interaction effect is higher than that only optimized by covering the main effect of single parameter in most cases.  相似文献

Background

Urban forests reduce greenhouse gas emissions by storing and sequestering considerable amounts of carbon. However, few studies have considered the local scale of urban forests to effectively evaluate their potential long-term carbon offset. The lack of precise, consistent and up-to-date forest details is challenging for long-term prognoses. Therefore, this review aims to identify uncertainties in urban forest carbon offset assessment and discuss the extent to which such uncertainties can be reduced by recent progress in high resolution remote sensing. We do this by performing an extensive literature review and a case study combining remote sensing and life cycle assessment of urban forest carbon offset in Berlin, Germany.

Main text

Recent progress in high resolution remote sensing and methods is adequate for delivering more precise details on the urban tree canopy, individual tree metrics, species, and age structures compared to conventional land use/cover class approaches. These area-wide consistent details can update life cycle inventories for more precise future prognoses. Additional improvements in classification accuracy can be achieved by a higher number of features derived from remote sensing data of increasing resolution, but first studies on this subject indicated that a smart selection of features already provides sufficient data that avoids redundancies and enables more efficient data processing. Our case study from Berlin could use remotely sensed individual tree species as consistent inventory of a life cycle assessment. However, a lack of growth, mortality and planting data forced us to make assumptions, therefore creating uncertainty in the long-term prognoses. Regarding temporal changes and reliable long-term estimates, more attention is required to detect changes of gradual growth, pruning and abrupt changes in tree planting and mortality. As such, precise long-term urban ecological monitoring using high resolution remote sensing should be intensified, especially due to increasing climate change effects. This is important for calibrating and validating recent prognoses of urban forest carbon offset, which have so far scarcely addressed longer timeframes. Additionally, higher resolution remote sensing of urban forest carbon estimates can improve upscaling approaches, which should be extended to reach a more precise global estimate for the first time.

Conclusions

Urban forest carbon offset can be made more relevant by making more standardized assessments available for science and professional practitioners, and the increasing availability of high resolution remote sensing data and the progress in data processing allows for precisely that.

With the emergence of very high spatial and spectral resolution data set, the resolution gap that existed between remote-sensing data set and aerial photographs has decreased. The decrease in resolution gap has allowed accurate discrimination of different tree species. In this study, discrimination of indigenous tree species (n?=?5) was carried out using ground based hyperspectral data resampled to QuickBird bands and the actual QuickBird imagery for the area around Palapye, Botswana. The purpose of the study was to compare the accuracies of resampled hyperspectral data (resampled to QuickBird sensors) with the actual image (QuickBird image) in discriminating between the indigenous tree species. We performed Random Forest (RF) using canopy reflectance taking from ground-based hyperspectral sensor and the reflectance delineated regions of the tree species. The overall accuracies for classifying the five tree species was 79.86 and 88.78% for both the resampled and actual image, respectively. We observed that resampled data set can be upscale to actual image with the same or even greater level of accuracy. We therefore conclude that high spectral and spatial resolution data set has substantial potential for tree species discrimination in savannah environments.

Abstract

Close-range hyperspectral images are a promising source of information in plant biology, in particular, for in vivo study of physiological changes. In this study, we investigate how data fusion can improve the detection of leaf elements by combining pixel reflectance and morphological information. The detection of image regions associated to the leaf structures is the first step toward quantitative analysis on the physical effects that genetic manipulation, disease infections, and environmental conditions have in plants. We tested our fusion approach on Musa acuminata (banana) leaf images and compared its discriminant capability to similar techniques used in remote sensing. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of our fusion approach, with significant improvements over some conventional methods.  相似文献

Landscape characterization gives an overall information on the status of Land Use and Land Cover(LULC),changes in its composition and the impact of natural and human influences operating at different spatial and temporal scales. This information can be used to monitor changes in natural forest resources and protected areas, delineate potential conservation areas and can serve in effective management of ecologically fragile landscapes. In the present study,geo-spatial tools were used to characterize the landscape of Sariska National Park and its surroundings.Satellite data was used to prepare LULC maps for 1989 and 2000,change detection analysis and computation of landscape metrics.Climatic data, field records and modeling tools were used to map the po-tential spread of two invasive species,Prosopis juliflora and Adhatoda vasica. The results show that the forest area increased from 1989 to 2000,indicating better management practices.Landscape metrics(PAFRAC,PLADJ and AI)also support this argument.Improvements in the degraded forest can further enhance this effect. The entire reserve however is suitable for the invasion of P.juliflora and A.vasica but is more pronounced in Boswellia serrata and Anogeissus pendula-Acacia catechu(open)forests.A detailed landscape characterization map can help forest managers to make important policy decisions concerning issues such as in-vasive species.  相似文献

Semi-arid parkland agrosystems are strongly sensitive to climate change and anthropic pressure. In the context of sustainability research, trees are considered critical for various ecosystem services covering environment quality as well as food security and health. But their actual ecological impact on both cropland and natural vegetation is not well understood yet, and collecting spatial and structural information around agroforestry systems is becoming an important issue. Tree mapping in semi-arid parklands could be one of these prerequisites. While for obtaining an exhaustive inventory of individual trees and for analysing their spatial distribution, remote sensing is the ideal tool. However, it has been noted that depending on the spatial resolution and sensor spectral characteristics, tree species cannot be distinguished clearly, even in the sparsely vegetated semi-arid ecosystems of West Africa. Thus, this work focuses on assessing the capabilities of Worldview-3 imagery, acquired in 8 spectral bands, to detect, delineate, and identify certain key tree species in the Faidherbia albida parkland in Bambey, Senegal, based on a ground-truth database corresponding to 5000 trees. The tree crowns are delineated through NDVI thresholding and consecutive filtering to provide object-based radiometric signatures, radiometric indices, and textural information. A factorial discriminant analysis is then performed, which indicates that only four out of the seven most abundant species in the study area can be discriminated: “Faidherbia albida”,” Azadirachta indica”, “Balanites aegyptiaca” and “Tamarindus indica”. Next, random forest and support vector machine classifiers are employed to identify the optimal combination of classifier parameters to discriminate these classes with a high accuracy, robustness, and stability. The linear support vector machine with cost=1 and gamma=0.01 provides the optimal results with a global accuracy of 88 % and kappa of 0.71. This classifier is applied to the whole study area to map all the trees with crowns larger than 2 m, sorted in four identified species and a fifth common group of unidentified species. This map thus enables analysing the variability in tree density and the spatial distribution of different species. Such information can afterwards be correlated to the ecological functioning of the parkland and local practices, and offers promising opportunities to help future sustainability initiatives in different socio-ecological contexts.  相似文献

Improved monitoring and understanding of tree growth and its responses to controlling factors are important for tree growth modeling. Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) can be used to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of large-scale forest surveys in delineating three-dimensional forest structures and under-canopy terrains. This study proposed an ALS-based framework to quantify tree growth and competition. Bi-temporal ALS data were used to quantify tree growth in height (ΔH), crown area (ΔA), crown volume (ΔV), and tree competition for 114,000 individual trees in two conifer-dominant Sierra Nevada forests. We analyzed the correlations between tree growth attributes and controlling factors (i.e. tree sizes, competition, forest structure, and topographic parameters) at multiple levels. At the individual tree level, ΔH had no consistent correlations with controlling factors, ΔA and ΔV were positively related to original tree sizes (R?>?0.3) and negatively related to competition indices (R?R|?>?0.7), ΔV was positively related to original tree sizes (|R|?>?0.8). Multivariate regression models were simulated at individual tree level for ΔH, ΔA, and ΔV with the R2 ranged from 0.1 to 0.43. The ALS-based tree height estimation and growth analysis results were consistent with field measurements.  相似文献

Recent advances in light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology have enabled the estimation of valuable canopy parameters (e.g., crown diameter, leaf area, and canopy structure) that are difficult to obtain through in situ surveys. The objective of this study was to assess the utility of LIDAR-derived measurements of crown and growth parameters to model and predict the growth of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) stands located in the University of Tokyo Forest, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Initially, we confirmed that crown lengths and widths of trees in stands of various densities obtained from LIDAR data correlated with those measured in situ. Then, we developed a crown growth model from repeated LIDAR measurements of stands, suggesting that LIDAR data are adequate for this purpose, and indicating that crown surface area and tree volume growth were linearly related (R2 = 0.90; p < 0.01; RMSE tree volume < 0.02 m3). The model also provided robust predictions of the volume growth of local forests in 10 × 10 m plots based on LIDAR-derived estimates of crown surface areas. Future work should test the applicability of this growth model to facilitate practical forest management.  相似文献

We used a full remote sensing-based approach to assess plant species diversity in large and inaccessible areas affected by Lantana camara L., a common invasive species within the deciduous forests of Western Himalayan region of India, using spectral heterogeneity information extracted from optical data. The spread of L. camara was precisely mapped by Pléiades 1A data, followed by comparing Pléiades 1A, RapidEye and Landsat-8 OLI – assessed plant species diversities in invaded areas. The single plant species analysis was improved by Pléiades 1A-based diversity analysis, and higher species diversity values were observed for mixed vegetation cover. Furthermore, lower Coefficient of Variation and Renyi diversity values were observed where L. camara was the only species, while higher variations were observed in areas with a mixed spectral reflectance. This study was concluded to add a crucial baseline to the previous studies on remote sensing-based solutions for rapid estimation of biodiversity attributes.  相似文献
