Intermediate dispersion spectroscopy of a sample of 40 hot subdwarf B stars between 5500 and 9000Å has been obtained. The sample includes a large fraction of targets which have been studied photometrically. Seven targets show strong lines arising from the infrared Ca  ii triplet, the unequivocal signature of a cool companion. The positive Ca  ii identifications include known photometric binaries and new targets; all are associated with a photometric red excess. Assuming a canonical value for the subdwarf luminosity, all of the detected companions are overluminous compared with the main sequence. The detection procedure indicates an improved and more secure method for the measurement of the binary frequency of hot subdwarfs.  相似文献

The results of investigations of a number of eclipsing Wolf-Rayet binaries are presented. The ‘core’ radiuses, the ‘core’ temperatures and masses of WR stars in the eclipsing WR+OB binary systems V 444 Cyg, CX Cep, CQ Cep, and CV Ser are obtained (see Table I). The results obtained from the light curves analysis of the V 444 Cyg in the range λλ2460 Å-3.5μ give strong evidence for the Beals (1944) model of WR phenomenon. The chromospheric-coronal effects in the WN5 extended atmosphere are not observed up to a distance ofr?20R . In the Hertzsprung—Russell diagram all the WR stars lie on the left side from the main sequence between the main sequence and the sequence of uniform helium stars (see Figure 9). Their locations are close to those of the helium remnants formed as a result of mass exchange in massive close binary systems. The period variations in the systems V 444 Cyg and CQ Cep have been discovered and a reliable value of the mass loss rateM=10?5 M yr?1 is obtained, for the two WR stars. The results of the photometric and spectroscopic investigations of the WR stars with low mass companions (post X-ray binary stage?) are presented too (see Table II). The masses of the companions are (1–2)M , their optical luminosity is ~1036, erg s?1 which implies that these companions cannot be the normal stars. It is possible that these companions are neutron stars accreting from the stellar wind of the WR stars. Low values of the X-ray luminosities of such WR stars with low mass companions imply that the accretion of matter in such systems is distinct from the accretion process in classical X-ray binary systems. It is noted also that the parameters of low massive companions coupled with WR stars are close to those of helium stars.  相似文献

We have carried out a search for co‐moving stellar and substellar companions around 18 exoplanet host stars with the infrared camera MAGIC at the 2.2 m Calar Alto telescope, by comparing our images with images from the all sky surveys 2MASS, POSS I and II. Four stars of the sample namely HD80606, 55 Cnc, HD46375 and BD–10°3166, are listed as binaries in the Washington Visual Double Star Catalogue (WDS). The binary nature of HD80606, 55 Cnc, and HD46375 is confirmed with both astrometry as well as photometry, thereby the proper motion of the companion of HD46375 was determined here for the first time.We derived the companion masses as well as the longterm stability regions for additional companions in these three binary systems. We can rule out further stellar companions around all stars in the sample with projected separations between 270AU and 2500AU, being sensitive to substellar companions with masses down to ∼60 MJup (S /N = 3). Furthermore we present evidence that the two components of the WDS binary BD–10°3166 are unrelated stars, i.e this system is a visual pair. The spectrophotometric distance of the primary (a K0 dwarf) is ∼67 pc, whereas the presumable secondary BD–10°3166B (a M4 to M5 dwarf) is located at a distance of 13 pc in the foreground. The aim of this paper is to present and study the light curves (B andV) of the eclipsing binary 68 u Her from the photometric observations made at Al-Battani Observatory.New photometric elements have been obtained by a Fourier analysis of the light changes in the frequency-domain.  相似文献

TheUBV photometric observations of the eclipsing binary V364 Cas have been discussed. Two sets of photometric elements, one based on the Russell and Merrill methods and the other based on Kopal's new method of the analysis of the light curves of eclipsing binary stars in the frequency-domain, have been derived. Using the observed colour indicesU-B andB-V, the spectral types of the systemic components are estimated. An examination of all the available times of minimum light of V364 Cas does not reveal any change in its orbital period.  相似文献

Following a brief history of measurement of eclipsing binary mass ratios from light curves, we show that photometric mass ratios for overcontact and semi-detached binaries are reliable because the relative stellar radii, R/a, are accurately measured and not, as commonly claimed, because of information in the light variation outside eclipse. We explore the accuracy of photometric mass ratios by solving synthetic data of typical precisions for a semi-detached and an overcontact binary for orbital inclinations from 89 down into the partial eclipse range.  相似文献

Gaudi & Gould showed that close companions of remote binary systems can be efficiently detected by using gravitational microlensing via the deviations in the lensing light curves induced by the existence of the lens companions. In this paper, we introduce another channel to detect faint close-in binary companions by using microlensing. This method utilizes a caustic-crossing binary lens event with a source also composed of binary stars, where the companion is a faint star. Detection of the companion is possible because the flux of the companion can be highly amplified when it crosses the lens caustic. The detection is facilitated since the companion is more amplified than the primary because it, in general, has a smaller size than the primary, and thus experiences less finite source effect. The method is an extension of the previous one suggested to detect close-in giant planets by Graff & Gaudi and Lewis & Ibata and further developed by Ashton & Lewis. From the simulations of realistic Galactic bulge events, we find that companions of K-type main-sequence or brighter stars can be efficiently detected from the current type of microlensing follow-up observations by using the proposed method. We also find that compared with the method of detecting lens companions for which the efficiency drops significantly for binaries with separations ≲0.2 of the angular Einstein ring radius, θ E, the proposed method has an important advantage of being able to detect companions with substantially smaller separations down to ∼     .  相似文献

TheU, B, andV photometric observations of the eclipsing binary MM Cas have been presented and discussed. The photometric elements have been derived. By use of the colour indicesU-B andB-V, the spectral types of the systemic components are estimated. An examination of all available times of minimum light of MM Cas does not reveal any change in its orbital period.  相似文献

A frequency-analysis of the broadbandUBV photometric observations of the interacting binary star KX And has been performed in order to disclose claimed rapid periodic variations. Our analysis confirms existence of rapid variability, but disagrees with the period. In discussion we rejected rotations as possible cause of the rapid photometric variations, and found that some kind of pulsations offer plasusible explanation.  相似文献

Consideration is given to a search for relativistic objects in massive close binary systems without strong X-ray emission (L x <1034 erg s–1). It is pointed out that, according to the present-day theory on the evolution of massive close binaries, the number of neutron stars and black holes in non-X-ray binary systems must be 100 times the number of the known X-ray binaries comprising OB supergiant stars; that is why, in studying non-X-ray binary systems, the chances are to detect about a hundred of black holes in the Galaxy.Criteria are formulated for the relativistic nature of companions in the binary systems, such as high spatial velocity values and height Z over the galactic plane for OB stars (runaway stars) and for Wolf-Rayet stars. As reported by Tutukov and Yungelson (1973), as well as by van den Heuvel (1976), the presence of ring-type nebulae can serve as another indication of a relativistic nature of companions in the case of Wolf-Rayet stars.Data are collected on Wolf-Rayet stars with low-mass companions (Table I), which can be relativistic objects accreting within a strong stellar wind from Wolf-Rayet stars. Presented are new findings in respect of spectral examination of the runaway OB-stars (Table II), bringing together data on eight OB stars which can represent binary systems with relativistic companions (Table III).A list of 28 OB-stars (Table IV) which offer a good chance for finding relativistic companions is given.  相似文献

The short period Algol-type binary HP Aur has been studied on the basis ofUBV photometric observations. Its colour indexes were found to be (U-B)=0.14, (B-V)=0.70, and light curves show non-symmetrical and obvious photometric disturbances. Autoregressive spectral analysis and harmonic analysis for its light variations were made. The results indicate its brightness variations have the multiplet quasi-periods and low amplitudes. Its photometric solutions have been obtained using the Wilson-Devinney method. Its mass ratio is 0.5631, orbital inclination is 85.0 and it is a detached system. Its basic model has been discussed briefly.  相似文献

The photometric solutions of W UMa-type binary BW Dra have been determined by applying the Wilson and Devinney Code toUBV observations of Rucinski and Kaluzny. It is shown that BW Dra is corresponding to a system with an overcontact configuration and smaller mass ratioq=0.392 andUBV light curves give the converging solutions with non-zero third light. It is proved that the components of BW Dra are older stars (the spectral types are G0 and G3, respectively). They could come into contact later stage of evolution. The photometric solution is similar to the results of Kaluzny and Rucinski. According to the photometric solution and spectroscopic results of Batten and Lu, the absolute parameters are presented too.  相似文献

Using Wood's model we have reanalyzed the light curves of the eclipsing binaries QY Aql, V388 Cyg, and HS Her. For QY Aql and HS Her our photometric solutions substantially confirm previous results, thus respectively supporting ansd-d classification and a main sequence detached view. On the other hand, significantly different photometric elements have been derived for V388 Cyg, which is likely to be an evolved contact binary.  相似文献

The short-period binary radial velocity program at the David Dunlap Observatory is described in some detail, with a brief summary on its history. The program is now reaching its 100-th orbit, with about 40 more orbits remaining within our access to Northern ( δ < –15), bright <10 mag), shortperiod(< 1 day) binary systems. All data are processed uniformly using the Broadening Function (BF) formalism which offers best information extraction and permits analysis of heavily rotationally blended spectra. Many close binaries appear to have visual or spectroscopic companions.  相似文献

The V light curve of eclipsing binary LD355 was analyzed by using the latest version of Wilson Program in order to derive photometric elements of this system. Since no spectroscopic mass ratio is available, the q‐search method was applied to yield the preliminary range of mass ratio in order to search for the final solution. The solution was performed by assuming detached (mode 2) and semi‐detached (mode 5) configurations, since no classification of the system based on the shape of light curve is possible. The solution in mode 5 leads to an acceptable model. The present solution reveals that LD355 has a photometric mass ratio q = 0.178 and is a semi‐detached binary with the secondary component filling the Roche lobe.  相似文献

A CCD imaging survey of elliptical galaxies which present radio jets is described. The photometric and morphological properties of these galaxies and their nearby companions are described by Fourier analysis of the intensity variations along a set of elliptical contours fitted to the intensity distribution. A large fraction of the sample shows evidence for interaction with close companions. By interpolation between the best-fit ellipses an elliptical galaxy model of the underlying stellar distribution is constructed and by subtraction of these models interesting morphological features such as boxy isophotes, dust lanes and emission line regions are revealed. The data analysis technique developed for this study is described. The morphological and photometric properties of the objects can be explained by gravitational interaction of galaxies in close encounters. Five objects of a complete sample of low luminosity radio galaxies are briefly discussed.  相似文献

In 2007, a companion with planetary mass was found around the pulsating subdwarf B star V391 Pegasi with the timing method, indicating that a previously undiscovered population of substellar companions to apparently single subdwarf B stars might exist. Following this serendipitous discovery, the EXOTIME (http://www.na.astro.it/~silvotti/exotime/) monitoring program has been set up to follow the pulsations of a number of selected rapidly pulsating subdwarf B stars on time scales of several years with two immediate observational goals:
  1. determine $\dot{P}$ of the pulsational periods P
  2. search for signatures of substellar companions in O–C residuals due to periodic light travel time variations, which would be tracking the central star’s companion-induced wobble around the centre of mass
These sets of data should therefore, at the same time, on the one hand be useful to provide extra constraints for classical asteroseismological exercises from the $\dot{P}$ (comparison with “local” evolutionary models), and on the other hand allow one to investigate the preceding evolution of a target in terms of possible “binary” evolution by extending the otherwise unsuccessful search for companions to potentially very low masses. While timing pulsations may be an observationally expensive method to search for companions, it samples a different range of orbital parameters, inaccessible through orbital photometric effects or the radial velocity method: the latter favours massive close-in companions, whereas the timing method becomes increasingly more sensitive toward wider separations. In this paper we report on the status of the on-going observations and coherence analysis for two of the currently five targets, revealing very well-behaved pulsational characteristics in HS?0444+0458, while showing HS?0702+6043 to be more complex than previously thought.  相似文献

The detection of extrasolar planets by measuring a photometric drop in the stellar brightness due to a planetary transit can be statistically improved by observing eclipsing binary systems and photometrically improved by observing small component systems. In particular the system CM Draconis, with two dM4 components, would allow the detection of extrasolar planets in the size range of Earth-to-Neptune requiring a ground-based photometric precision of about 0.08% to 1.1% (photometric precision of about 0.3% is routinely achievable with 1-meter class telescopes at the magnitude of CM Draconis, 11.07 inR-filter). In addition, the transit of extrasolar planets in a binary star system provides a unique, quasi-periodic signal that can be cross-correlated with the observational data to detect sub-noise signals. We examine the importance of making such observations to an understanding of the formation and evolution of terrestrial-type planets in main-sequence star systems. Terrestrial planets could have formed with substancially shorter periods in this lower luminosity system, for example, and might be expected to have accreted essentially in the binary orbital plane (however, non-coplanar planets may also eventually be detectable due to precession). We also report on a network of medium-sized telescopes at varying longitudes that have been organized to provide such constraints on terrestrial-planet formation processes and discuss the extention of near-term observations to other possible binary systems, as well. Finally, we discuss a more speculative, future observation that could be performed on the CM Draconis system that would be of exobiological as well as astrophysical interest.  相似文献

Using Wood's (1972) model we have re-analyzed the photoelectric light curve of the eclipsing binary AI Cru, published and unsatisfactorily discussed by Ollongren (1956), in order to obtain reliable photometric elements. Our photometric solution differs considerably from Ollongren's (1956). For our photometric mass ratio,q=0.8, both components, though detached from their Roche lobes, are fairly close to a contact configuration.AI Cru, composed of a brighter and larger B5 primary and a fainter and smaller (around B9.5) secondary, is probably not a normal Main Sequence system, since the ratios of the secondary's mass and radius over the primary's turn out to be larger than expected for main sequence stars of the same spectral types.  相似文献

A black hole transiting a companion star in a binary system will produce a time-varying intensity profile as observed at the Earth because of the Einstein photometric effect (gravitational lens phenomenon). If the transited star is an early-type supergiant with electron scattering as its dominant atmospheric opacity source, then variable linear polarization will also result from the destruction of the circular symmetry of the observed stellar disk. The simultaneous variation of the three Stokes parametersI, Q, andU may be thought of as the signature of a black hole transit. Monte-Carlo calculations show that the effect has the properties expected from qualitative considerations. The amplitude of the photometric and polarimetric light curves in a typical X-ray binary is too small to be observed with present instrumentation. A black hole transit might be detectable in a binary having a large separation of the components. The signature is also masked in close binaries by the much larger variability caused by the changing aspect of the tidally distorted OB star. The polarization induced by tidal distortion always produces a derived inclination of 90° when the standard method of analyzing the data is used. This effect may contribute to the unrealistically large values of inclination derived from polarimetric observations for the Cyg XR-1/HDE226868 system.  相似文献
