We present 3 yr of timing observations for PSR J1453+1902, a 5.79-ms pulsar discovered during a 430-MHz drift-scan survey with the Arecibo telescope. Our observations show that PSR J1453+1902 is solitary and has a proper motion of  8 ±  2  mas yr−1. At the nominal distance of 1.2 kpc estimated from the pulsar's dispersion measure, this corresponds to a transverse speed of  46 ± 11   km s−1  , typical of the millisecond pulsar population. We analyse the current sample of 55 millisecond pulsars in the Galactic disc and revisit the question of whether the luminosities of isolated millisecond pulsars are different from their binary counterparts. We demonstrate that the apparent differences in the luminosity distributions seen in samples selected from 430-MHz surveys can be explained by small-number statistics and observational selection biases. An examination of the sample from 1400-MHz surveys shows no differences in the distributions. The simplest conclusion from the current data is that the spin, kinematic, spatial and luminosity distributions of isolated and binary millisecond pulsars are consistent with a single homogeneous population.  相似文献

The results of research on pairs of PSR which were possibly components of disrupted binaries, seem to advance further arguments in favour of the idea, suggested by some authors, that most of PSR were formed in binary systems.  相似文献

The chemical composition of primary cosmic rays with energies from 1015 to 1016.5 eV, so called “knee” region, is examined. We have observed the time structures of air Čerenkov light associated with air showers at Mt. Chacaltaya, Bolivia, since 1995. The distribution of a parameter that characterizes the observed time structures is compared with that calculated with a Monte Carlo technique for various chemical compositions. Then the energy dependence of the average logarithmic mass numbers ln A of the primary cosmic rays is determined. The present result at 1015.3 eV is almost consistent with the result of JACEE (A12) and shows gradual increase in ln A as a function of the primary energy (A24 at 1016 eV). Form the comparison of the observational results with several theoretical models, we conclude that the supernova explosion of massive stars is a plausible candidate for the origin of cosmic rays around the “knee” region.  相似文献

It is suggested that the experimental data on the solar neutrino flux as measured by Davis and his collaborators from 1970 to 1982 vary with the solar activity cycle to a very high level of statistical significance for all the available tests of the hypothesis (e.g., (t-test, 2-test, run test, Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test) when the solar neutrino flux data are computed from the weighted moving averages of order 5. The above tests have also been applied to the data that have been generated by the Monte Carlo simulation with production rate and background rate parameters that are typical of those in the actual experiment. It is shown that the Monte Carlo simulated data do not indicate a variation within the solar cycle. Thus the moving average data strongly favours the variation within the solar activity cycle.  相似文献

The ultra-high energy cosmic rays recently detected by several air shower experiments could have an extragalactic origin. In this case, the nearest active galaxy Centaurus A might be the source of the most energetic particles ever detected on Earth. We have used recent radio observations in order to estimate the arrival energy of the protons accelerated by strong shock fronts in the outer parts of this southern radio source. We expect detections coresponding to particles with energies up to 2.2 × 1021 eV and an arrival direction of (l ≈ 310°, b ≈ 20°) in galactic coordinates. The future Southern Hemisphere Pierre Auger Observatory might provide a decisive test for extragalactic models of the origin of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays.  相似文献

It has been proposed that the observed solar neutrino flux exhibits important correlations with solar particles, galactic cosmic rays, and the sunspot cycle, with the latter correlation being opposite in phase and lagging behind the sunspot cycle by about one year. Re-examination of the data-available interval 1971–1981, employing various tests of statistical significance, however, suggests that such a claim is, at present, unwarrantable. For example, on the associations of solar neutrino flux and cosmic-ray flux with the Ap geomagnetic index, neither were found to be statistically significant (at the 95% level of confidence), regardless of the choice of lag (-1, 0, or +1 yr). Presuming linear fits, all correlations with Ap had coefficients of determination (r 2, where r is the linear correlation coefficient) less than 16%, meaning that 16% of the variation in the selected test parameters could be explained by the variation in Ap. Similarly, on the associations of solar neutrino flux and cosmic ray flux with sunspot number, only the latter association proved to be of statistical importance. Using the best linear fits, the correlation between yearly averages of solar neutrino flux and sunspot number had r 2 19%, the correlation between weighted moving averages (of order 5) of solar neutrino flux and sunspot number had r 2 45%, and the correlation between cosmic-ray flux and sunspot number had r 2 76%, all correlations being inverse associations. Solar neutrino flux was found not to correlate strongly with cosmic-ray flux, and the Ap geomagnetic index was found not to correlate strongly with sunspot number.  相似文献

We have measured the chemical composition of cosmic rays withZ2 over an energy range from 100 MeV/nuc to >2 GeV/nuc using 2 new large area counter telescopes. One of these instruments was a 4 element dE/dx×E× Range telescope, the other a 4 element dE/dx×Cerenkov× ×Range telescope. Two balloon flights with these telescopes at Ft. Churchill in the summer of 1970 provided a total of nearly 1000 Fe nuclei with a charge resolution ranging from 0.10 charge unit at Carbon to 0.25 charge unit at Fe. A detailed charge spectrum is obtained at both high and low energies. Some important differences exist between the present results and those obtained earlier, due in part to the improved statistical accuracy and in part to the improved background rejection of the present data. In particular, the abundance of Cr and Mn are each found to be 0.10×Fe in contrast to the earlier ratio of 0.30 found by some workers for each of these nuclei. The abundance of these two nuclei, as well as others in the 15–25 range, shows no strong dependence on energy. We have extrapolated our composition data to the cosmic ray sources using a variety of interstellar path length distributions. The abundances ofall secondary nuclei withZ between 3–25 are consistent only with propagation models which have vacuum path length distributions which do not differ greatly from exponential. The source abundances of nuclei withZ=15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25 are found to be <0.02×Fe. For the remaining nuclei, Na, Al, S, and Ca are found to have source abundances of 0.07, 0.11, 0.18 and 0.13 of Fe respectively. The source abundance of C and O relative to Fe is also much different than some earlier compilations. A comparison of solar and cosmic ray abundances reveals certain selective differences, rather than a systematic overabundance of heavy nuclei in cosmic rays, as has been suggested in the past. These differences are discussed in terms of a common nucleosynthesis origin of the two species of particles.Research sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under Grant No. NGR-30-002-052.  相似文献

We report the results of a search for point-like deviations from isotropy in the arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays in the northern hemisphere. In the monocular data set collected by the High-Resolution Fly’s Eye, consisting of 1525 events with energy exceeding 1018.5 eV, we find no evidence for point-like excesses. We place a 90% c.l. upper limit of 0.8 hadronic cosmic rays/km2 yr on the flux from such sources for the northern hemisphere and place tighter limits as a function of position in the sky.  相似文献

We analyze the directions of the arrival of cosmic rays with energies E 0≥3×1018 eV and zenith angles θ≤45° recorded by the Yakutsk extensive air shower (EAS) facility during 1974–2000. They are shown to have a small-scale structure with scale sizes of 5°–10°. Enhanced particle fluxes compared to the expected levels for random distributions at (4–5)σ are observed from the Galactic and Supergalactic planes.  相似文献

The sources of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs, E >1018 eV) are still unknown, mainly due to the loss of the direction to the source after the deflection of cosmic rays’ (CRs) trajectories in the galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields. With the increase in CR energy (rigidity), the influence of the magnetic field weakens; therefore, the most promising approach is to search for the sources of events with the highest energy. In our work, we expand the existing UHECR (E > 1020 eV) sample from 33 to 42 events by calibrating the AUGER events. The sample is characterized by the presence of an event triplet in a circle of radius 3°. The highest-energy event is still the shower (E = 3.2 × 1020 eV) detected with the Fly’s Eye fluorescent detector (FE-event) in 1993. The possible sources of the triplet and the FE-event are analyzed. Taking into account the deflection of CR trajectories in the extragalactic and galactic magnetic fields, it is shown that transient sources of the FE-event and the triplet may be galaxies with active star formation, where CRs are accelerated by newborn millisecond pulsars. Among the galactic sources, the potential candidates are young pulsars that might have had millisecond periods at birth and giant magnetar flares.  相似文献

We analyze the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energies E 0≈(1–4)×1017 eV and zenith angles θ≤53≤ detected with the Yakutsk extensive air shower (EAS) array during 1974–2001. We show that ~10% of them form many clusters correlated with the Supergalactic plane. Enhanced particle fluxes arrive from the Supergalactic plane and the regions that are symmetrically adjacent to it at angles ±b SG ≈ 6°.5. The relatively high concentrations of clusters of galaxies and quasars that bear a relationship to the large-scale structure of the Universe are observed in these regions.  相似文献

The sub-iron-iron flux ratio in cosmic rays at an atmospheric depth of 9.8 g cm–2 has been estimated using a balloon-borne CR-39 (HCB) stack launched from Alice Springs for 32 hours. The recovered and chemically etched plates were analysed optically and the measured etch pit diameters yielded the sub-iron-iron flux ratio at the flight altitude. The sub-iron-iron flux ratio has been corrected for the top of the atmosphere by considering the loss of heavy ions due to nuclear interaction and fragmentation. The present result has been compared with the result expected from the source composition derived by Protheroeet al. as well as other authors.  相似文献

A concept of stellar aggregate activity is advanced. It is shown that the aggregate activity is too high in order to generate cosmic rays. Two conditions lay claim to cosmic ray primary sources: (i) a very large number of sources (104), and (ii) a homogeneous distribution of sources in the Galaxy. Supernovae do not satisfy both those conditions, but stellar aggregates do. The total interstellar medium of the aggregate identifies with a supernova remnant and possesses properties favourable for the acceleration of cosmic rays up to a high energy by statistical mechanisms. The direct suppliers of primary cosmic rays are the flare stars in the aggregates. From the point of view of energetic resources as well as the energetic consistency of cosmic rays, aggregates are equivalent with supernova remmants. The aggregate must also be the source of gamma-rays. The usual UV Cet-type flare stars in the Sun's neighbourhood do not play any role as sources of primary cosmic rays. The aggregate conception connects the very fact of the existence of cosmic rays with the continued star-formation process in Galaxy.  相似文献
