The Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory has played a key role in the development of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) in the southern hemisphere since 1971. This paper describes how the VLBI programme evolved and the instrumentation used. Contributions to high resolution mapping of compact radio sources are described, for both the Southern Hemisphere VLBI Experiment, SHEVE, and for Global networks, where HartRAO has made significant improvements in the N-S resolution. The unique geographical location of the telescope has been used to establish the terrestrial reference frame in the southern hemisphere and to measure tectonic motions over the past nine years. The Observatory has also been a fundamental station in extending the celestial reference frame defined by extragalactic radio sources to the southern hemisphere, and results of these programmes are given.  相似文献

In this paper we derive the post-newtonian expressions for the VLBI time delay and gravitational delay in the barycentric coordinate system of the solar system. We discuss the effect of the various bodies and their range of action. From the transformation between the barycentric and the geocentric systems we then give the VLBI observational model in the geocentric system. Our final results are given by formula (16) for the gravitational delay and by formula (25) for the VLBI time delay.  相似文献

A series of daytime observations of the Sun and major planets are obtained at the mountain astronomical station of the Pulkovo Observatory using the Ertel-Struve meridian instruments. A series of declinations of Solar System bodies and major planets includes 4057 positions and that of right ascensions of Solar System bodies comprising 2057 positions. Based on the joint processing of observations of the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars obtained with the Ertel-Struve vertical circle and large transit instrument, the orientation elements of the DE200/LE200 dynamic coordinate system, namely, a correction for the right ascensions of FK5 stars ΔA = +0.127″ ± 0.033″, a correction for declinations of FK5 stars ΔD = +0.056″ ± 0.011″, a correction for the ecliptic inclination Δɛ = −0.044″ ± 0.012″, and a correction for the average longitude of the Sun ΔL = −0.083″±0.035″, are determined with respect to the stellar coordinate system.  相似文献

We present and discuss the results of the astrometry project during which we observed the satellites of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune at the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory (Georgia) between 1983 and 1994. Observations at the Abastumani Observatory were performed with the double Zeiss astrograph (DZA: D/F = 400/3024 mm) and AZT-11 telescope (F = 16 m). We processed a large array of observations and determined exact coordinates of the planets and their satellites in a system of reference stars of modern catalogues as well as relative coordinates of the satellites. The results were compared with modern ephemerides using the MULTI-SAT software. The comparison enabled us to estimate the accuracy of observations (their random and systematic uncertainties) and the accuracy of modern theories of the motion of planets and their satellites. Random uncertainties of observations are estimated to be 0.10??C0.40?? for various objects and observational conditions. Observational results obtained for Uranus, Neptune and the satellites Titania and Oberon were shown to deviate appreciably and systematically from theories of their motion. The results of observations are presented in the Pulkovo database for Solar System bodies that is available at the website http://www.puldb.ru.  相似文献

We present the results of 3489 astrometric observations for 361 visual double stars performed in 2003–2007 with the 26-inch refractor of the Pulkovo Observatory. The angular separations between the components (ρ) and the position angles (θ) are given. The errors in these quantities are, on average, 0″.009 for ρ and 0°.40/ρ for θ, where ρ is the separation in arcseconds.  相似文献

Robust techniques are developed to put the H and Ca K line full-disk images taken at the Meudon Observatory into a standardised form of a `virtual solar image'. The techniques include limb fitting, removal of geometrical distortion, centre position and size standardisation and intensity normalisation. The limb fitting starts with an initial estimate of the solar centre using raw 12-bit image data and then applies a Canny edge-detection routine. Candidate edge points for the limb are selected using a histogram based method and the chosen points fitted to a quadratic function by minimising the algebraic distance using SVD. The five parameters of the ellipse fitting the limb are extracted from the quadratic function. These parameters are used to define an affine transformation that transforms the image shape into a circle. Transformed images are generated using the nearest neighbour, bilinear or bicubic interpolation. Intensity renormalisation is also required because of a limb darkening and other non-radial intensity variations. It is achieved by fitting a background function in polar coordinates to a set of sample points having the median intensities and by standardising the average brightness. Representative examples of intermediate and final processed results are presented in addition to the algorithms developed. The research was done for the European Grid of Solar Observations (EGSO) project.  相似文献

VLBI observations at wavelengths of 18 and 6 cm with baselines up to 15 and 23 million wavelengths have been made in a search for structures on scales of 10 to 100 milliarcseconds (mas) in the quasar 4C 39.25.No significant structure on these scales above 5% of the peak brightness was detected. The core itself, however, appears to be extended on a scale of 2 to 4 mas and to have a variable flux.  相似文献

Based on an analysis of the VLBI observations performed in 1985?C2010 within the framework of international geodetic programs on global networks of stations, we have obtained statistically significant corrections to the parameters of lunisolar tides??the nominal complex Love/Shida numbers. The new integral (frequency-independent) values of these parameters (in 10?4) are h (0) = (6113 ± 3) ? (33 ± 2)i, l (0) = (843 ± 1) ? (5 ± 2)i for a total tide; h (0) = (6106 ± 3) ? (10 ± 6)i, l (0) = (843 ± 1) ? (8 ± 1)i for diurnal tides; and h (0) = (6106 ± 3) ? (24 ± 3)i, l (0) = (843 ± 1) + (3 ± 1)i for semi-diurnal tides. We have detected a new effect of asymmetry in the horizontal tidal displacements in the direction of tectonic motions for 50 VLBI stations. We have determined upper limits for the influence of the frequency-dependent resonance effects whose estimation accuracy is limited by an abundance of close frequencies in their harmonic expansion. The influence of the transfer function for tides on the VLBI observations has turned out to be lower than the measurement accuracy. In future, positional GPS/GLONASS measurements are planned to be used to refine the resonance effects and the transfer function.  相似文献

A brief summary is given of a program which is currently being carried out with the McMath telescope of the Kitt Peak National Observatory in order to study high-degree (l ≳ 150) solar p-mode oscillations. This program uses a 244 × 248 pixel CID camera and the main spectrograph of the McMath telescope to obtain velocity-time maps of the oscillations which can be converted into two-dimensional (k h - ω) power spectra of the oscillations. Several different regions of the solar spectrum have been used in order to study the oscillations at different elevations in the solar atmosphere. The program concentrates on eastward- and westward-propagating sectoral harmonic waves so that measurements can be made of the absolute rotational velocities of the solar photospheric and shallow sub-photospheric layers. Some preliminary results from this program are now available. First, we have been unable to confirm the existence of a radial gradient in the equatorial rotational velocity as was previously suggested. Second, we have indeed been able to confirm the presence of p-mode waves in the solar chromosphere as was first suggested by Rhodes et al. (1977). Third, we have been able to demonstrate differences in photospheric and chromospheric power spectra.

We report on observations of several transit events of the transiting planet TrES‐2 obtained with the Cassegrain‐Teleskop‐Kamera at the University Observatory Jena. Between March 2007 and November 2008 ten different transits and almost a complete orbital period were observed. Overall, in 40 nights of observation 4291 exposures (in total 71.52 h of observation) of the TrES‐2 parent star were taken. With the transit timings for TrES‐2 from the 34 events published by the TrES‐network, the Transit Light Curve project and the Exoplanet Transit Database plus our own ten transits, we find that the orbital period is P = (2.470614 ± 0.000001) d, a slight change by ∼0.6 s compared to the previously published period. We present new ephemeris for this transiting planet. Furthermore, we found a second dip after the transit which could either be due to a blended variable star or occultation of a second star or even an additional object in the system. Our observations will be useful for future investigations of timing variations caused by additional perturbing planets and/or stellar spots and/or moons (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Using a new version of the QUASAR domestic multifunction software package, we have simultaneously processed all of the available VLBI observations performed on global networks of stations over the period 1979–2009. New improved and extended versions of the international reference systems of coordinates of extragalactic radio sources and ground-based VLBI stations and a new independent series of Earth orientation parameters have been obtained. Analysis of the accuracy of these results shows that they are at the level of the best determinations at national and international VLBI data analysis centers.  相似文献

I discuss the use of Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) phase scintillations to probe the conditions of plasma turbulence in the solar wind. Specific results from 5.0 and 8.4 GHz observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) are shown. There are several advantages of phase scintillation measurements. They are sensitive to fluctuations on scales of hundreds to thousands of kilometers, much larger than those probed by IPS intensity scintillations. In addition, with the frequency versatility of the VLBA one can measure turbulence from the outer corona 5–10R to well past the perihelion approach of the Helios spacecraft. This permits tests of the consistency of radio propagation and direct in-situ measurements of turbulence. Such a comparison is made in the present paper. Special attention is dedicated to measuring the dependence of the normalization coefficient of the density power spectrum,C N 2 on distance from the sun. Our results are consistent with the contention published several years ago by Aaron Roberts, that there is insufficient turbulence close to the sun to account for the heating and acceleration of the solar wind. In addition, an accurate determination of theC N 2 (R) relationship could aid the detection of transients in the solar wind.  相似文献

The photographic observations of comet Hale-Bopp with the 26-inch Pulkovo Observatory refractor in March–April, 1998, revealed three hemispherical gas-dust envelopes and one spiral jet in the comet head. We determined the angular distances of these envelopes from the comet nucleus and estimated their velocities. The masses and sizes of dust grains were estimated. We conclude that submicron-sized grains dominate in the envelopes. We also estimated the time scale of the comet nuclear activity, which manifests itself in dust ejection, the initial velocity of the ejected dust grains, and the ratio of the radiation-pressure force exerted on dust grains to the force of their gravitational attraction to the Sun. Our observations yielded an estimate for the radius of the comet nucleus, ~30 km.  相似文献

The results of VLBI observations of the quasar 3C273, obtained during a multi-band campaign, are presented. The changes in separation from the core of the components along the first 2 mas of the jet were measured. The jet starts wiggling well inside the first parsec from the core. We derived the period of the oscillating jet path around the principal jet-axis in the range 2–8 mas from the core. The components' angular sizes, their peak fluxes, and turnover frequencies were also derived from the VLBI observations. We have derived lower limits to the Doppler factor by comparing the observed X-ray fluxes with those predicted by the synchrotron self-Compton model. Independent estimates were obtained through the assumption of energy equipartition between particles and magnetic field.  相似文献

Day-to-day and hour-to-hour changes in the large-scale atmospheric and surface features of the planets can now be studied more effectively than previously possible. Since 1969 a network of observatories has obtained almost uninterrupted photographic coverage during all apparitions of Jupiter and Mars, plus some of Venus. Patrol films and catalogues are available to the scientific community. Recent or current analyses include the distribution and motion of clouds on Mars, the development and decay of Martian dust storms, the seasonal, diurnal and random fluctuations in contrast between adjacent light and dark regions on Mars, the detection of vertical shear in the Jovian atmosphere, the longitudinal oscillation of the Red Spot, the dependence of rotation period on xenographic latitude and on time, the eruption and spread of SEB disturbances, and the retrograde circulation of the Venus cloud deck.  相似文献

Astrometric CCD observations of stars with large proper motions were carried out during 2008–2014 using telescopes of the Nikolaev Astronomical Observatory. A catalog of positions and proper motion of 1596 fast stars with proper motions exceeding 150 mas/yr has been compiled based on observation results. The catalog covers the declination zone from 0° to 65°. The standard error of derived proper motion is 1…10 mas/yr for both coordinates depending on the observational history of the star. Data from eight different star catalogs and surveys have been used to derive proper motion. The comparison results of proper motion with data from modern catalogs and results of the statistical test for the detection of possible invisible components are given.  相似文献

Results of astrometric and BVRI photometric observations of the active asteroid (596) Scheila are presented. The observations were carried out at the Zeiss-1000 telescope of the Sanglokh International Astronomical Observatory of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan on June 16?17 and from July 30 to August 1, 2017. The coordinates of the object and its orbit were determined; and the apparent brightness in four filters, the absolute brightness in the V and R filters, and the color indices were obtained. The light curves suggest that no substantial changes in the asteroid’s brightness occurred during the observations. The absolute brightness of the asteroid in the V and R filters was (9.1 ± 0.05)m and (8.8 ± 0.03)m, respectively. The mean value of the asteroid diameter was (119 ± 2) km. The mean values of the color indices (B?V = (0.72 ± 0.05)m, V?R = (0.29 ± 0.03)m, and R?I = (0.31 ± 0.03)m) agree well with the values for asteroids of the P- and D-types and its averages. The rotation period of the asteroid estimated from photometric observations was 16.1 ± 0.2 h. The analysis of the data has shown that the asteroid continues to exhibit the same values of absolute brightness and other characteristics as those before the collision with a small body in December 2010, though the latter resulted in the outburst event and cometary activity of the asteroid. Most likely, the collision of asteroid (596) Scheila with a small body did not lead to catastrophic changes in the surface of the asteroid or to its compete break-up.  相似文献
