Questionnaires sent to 500 geographers randomly selected from U.S. graduate departments solicited opinions on the quality of scholarship of articles in 34 U.S. geography journals. The five highest ranked were Quaternary Research, Annals, AAG, Arctic and Alpine Research, Geographical Review, and American Cartographer. When familiarity and quality together were ranked, the top five were Annals, AAG, Geographical Review, Professional Geographer, Economic Geography and Journal of Geography. Age and specialty of respondent were most significant in explaining ranking variations.  相似文献

文化地理学研究范式的探索程度,关涉文化地理学学科建设的深度,也是文化地理学科学研究是否成熟的标志。改革开放40多年来,中国文化地理学取得了前所未有的成绩。但时至今日,学科内外依然对文化地理学的研究范式存在争论和疑虑。以文化研究的“弱范式”和“强范式”为切入点,对弱、强范式内涵进行了梳理和界定,并对中国文化地理学研究范式进行解析,认为传统文化地理学和新文化地理学在本质上契合文化研究的“弱范式”和“强范式”,在实践中虽然每个范式都引发了争论,但也存在内部张力和延展可能,不应看作是范式的“断代”,将其理解为基于“范式选择”和“阐释效能”内涵更符合实际。在当前流动性和文化混杂性背景下,传统分割式单一范式思维不能较好地回应文化地理发展的新内涵,文化地理学范式探索应该是一个动态且需要不断确立学术话语权的过程,探索“时空综合视角”下的“混杂融合”范式更加符合新的时代诉求。未来中国文化地理学界需要超越“范式分割”和“阶段性求安式”的惯性思维,重新定位和精准把握文化地理学的时代使命和学术承诺,提升文化地理学范式解释能力,赋予文化地理学与时代匹配的范式内涵。  相似文献

指出TerryG Jordan等人在“Thehumanmosaic”一书中所提出的、并被国内人文地理教科书所采用的分析框架仍然属于传统人文地理学的分析框架 ,偏重于文化生态学和文化景观学派。而deBlij等人在“Humangeography :culture ,society ,andspace”第 6版教科书中所出示的框架图 ,显示出人文地理学研究问题和思路的新变化。新文化地理学的发展使人文地理学研究框架的重构问题突显出来。作者尝试将传统人文地理学和新文化地理学结合 ,利用 5个复数概念 :属性 (attributes)、空间 (spaces)、时间 (times)、方法 (approaches)和世界(worlds) ,构建了ASTAW框架。该概念框架的排列组合关系 ,可用以指导人文地理学问题的建构和研究路径 ,丰富以往人文地理学的内容体系 ,具有相应的时代应用价值。  相似文献

Employment Trends in Geography,Part 1: Enrollment and Degree Patterns*   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper is the first in a series of three papers dealing with the current and future labor market for geographers. It is based on a report prepared by the Association of American Geographers' (AAG) Employment Forecasting Committee to the National Research Council's (NRC) Rediscovering Geography Committee. This report provides a data-based analysis of the past and future supply of geographers, the current labor market conditions in the field, and the factors likely to influence the future demand for geographers (faculty hiring, geographic education initiatives, trends in private-sector jobs, etc.). Each year some 4,000 individuals receive degrees in geography from America's institutions of higher education. They, or some portion of them, make up the new supply of geographers entering the labor market. In the near future (up to five years), the availability of new geographers is related to the number of geography students now in the educational pipeline. Their current specialties, and the specialties of the programs from which they come, tell us about the types of skills and the kinds of interests to be held by future labor force entrants. In the longer term (five to ten years), the number of new geographers will be influenced by geographic education initiatives at the precollegiate level. More and better geographic instruction in elementary and secondary schools will expose more students to geography as a field of study and as a potential career path. The purposes of this paper are to (1) review degree and enrollment trends in geography, (2) assess the “trickle-up” effects of geographic education initiatives at the precollegiate level, and (3) investigate the characteristics of future supply as evidenced by the types of occupations for which geography departments are now preparing students.  相似文献

A Speculative Cultural Geography is a format for an introductory course in Cultural Geography in which the student is given maximum opportunity to determine and comprehend the decision-making processes which have been instrumental in the development of historical and contemporary cultural landscapes. The rationale behind the creation of this combination of role-playing and in-class argumentation in conjunction with sequential themes in Cultural Geography is the belief that media-conscious students in college today justly demand more involvement in the learning process than merely being the passive recipients of traditional lectures. The third and final article in this series about employment conditions in geography addresses the issue of future demand in both academic and nonacademic settings. To gain an understanding of future demand conditions in colleges and universities, we projected the retirement of AAG members by topical specialty and then matched these retirement trends with a profile of new faculty searches as reported by geography department chairs. We assessed the likely future demand for geography teachers at the precollegiate level through a survey of Geography Alliance Coordinators about teacher certification requirements and the education environments in their respective states. We speculated on how the kinds of jobs geographers do will be affected by changes now underway in the national and global economies. And finally, we conducted a small telephone survey of AAG corporate sponsors to determine how future business trends will affect the demand for geographers.  相似文献

A proportional shift in where geographer‐climatologists publish has occurred in recent decades. More than 1,500 journal articles published by members of the Association of American Geographers' Climate Specialty Group (CSG) in the period 1989–2005 were examined to determine where geographer‐climatologists are publishing. The analysis showed that members of the CSG cumulatively published at least ten articles in thirty‐seven different journals. No single journal accounted for more than 7 percent of the articles published. Although the absolute number of articles has remained relatively static, geographer‐climatologists published 21 percent of their articles in geography journals in 1989–1997, but only 11 percent in 1998–2005. These publication trends are likely to continue and may influence the status and prestige of geography journals and the discipline of geography.  相似文献

Abstract

Geography For Life: National Geography Standards 1994 offers university geographers opportunities in the areas of program assessment and development. This article describes an assessment process that is applicable to both individual courses and geography programs. The process can strengthen programs by making them more consistent. As a result, geography may have a more powerful presence in teacher certification programs. Additional techniques for enhancing geography's role in preservice education curricula are also outlined. Finally, the article expresses concern that geographers at the university level will not take the recently published National Geography Standards seriously, thinking they apply only to K-12 education. They are challenged to extend the Standards' scope and content to the baccalaureate degree.  相似文献

超级机制或超机体概念是人类学家提出的概念,后被美国伯克莱地理学派引入到文化地理学研究中。尽管该概念自引入之初起,就伴随着学术讨论,但是它在上个世纪的英美地理学中有着重要的影响。新文化地理学与传统文化地理学的分歧之一也在此概念上。本文列举了在美国和中国文化地理学研究中,超级机制的适用性和局限性,并探讨了超级机制指导下,文化地理学的研究方法在何种情况下是因果分析,何种情况下是非因果分析。进而指出,超级机制概念在分析宏观区域文化一致性上具有解释性,在分析微观尺度区域内的人地关系上也具有一定适用性。新超级机制理论在学术界的讨论过程中提出了一些修正,在分析社会文化时超级机制不适用。  相似文献

Early career geography faculty in colleges and universities in the United States are positioned at the leading edge of a challenging period of change in higher education. Demands brought on by new technologies, new administrative and research pressures, and an increasingly competitive campus climate, may make it difficult to balance teaching, research, and service while also trying to maintain a personal life. This article argues that many geographers could benefit from the support of mentoring. Using ideas generated by participants in the Association of American Geographers' recent project, the Geography Faculty Development Alliance, I provide both pragmatic and personal suggestions for establishing these all‐important mentoring relationships to help cope with the pressures facing early career faculty.  相似文献

新文化地理学是英国一批文化地理学者在1980年代建立起来的知识体系。它与传统文化地理学有所不同,区别之一在于是否关注电影、文学作品、绘画等文本所再现的地方性。近年在英美文化地理学的核心刊物中,许多文章研究了由文本再现出来的地方性。地方性是文化地理学最主要的研究议题之一,它是文化地理学与其他人文地理学分支结合的关键概念。梳理这些文章,旨在归纳出文本在地方性形成中所起的作用。分析结论如下:① 文本可以通过再现3种内容来建构地方性:当地的景观、日常生活实践和业已消失的文化;② 文本再现地方性的机制多来自人们的意识形态需要,"我"与"他者"的精神诉求不同,再现的地方性也不同;③ 文本的再现对地方性既会有强化作用,也会有削弱作用。归纳出这种三种结论后,尚需要进一步讨论如下问题:在地方性的形成中,文本的作用是否是或缺的。如果不是或缺的,而是必须的,那么文化地理学者则必须研究文本中再现的地方性。  相似文献

Geography has a long tradition of community-engaged research and teaching. Conventional institutional and departmental norms in many U.S. universities and colleges, however, often discourage such engaged scholarship and teaching, especially among junior faculty. We argue that geographers are well poised to unravel society's twenty-first-century intractable problems if engaged scholarship is more intentionally supported. As community geographers in junior faculty positions at research-intensive universities, we discuss our experiences with placing community engagement at the core of our scholarship, highlighting opportunities for a more robust integration of engaged scholarship in academic geography.  相似文献

The debate regarding geographic information systems (GIS) as tool, toolbox, or science still lingers in geography departments and among geographers. Analysis of geographic information is a vital component of decision making among business, governments, researchers, and academics. GIS users, geographers and nongeographers alike, use and benefit from problem-solving methods in numerous fields and contexts, making the use of GIS and the core competencies associated with using GIS a topic of intense debate. Complicating this ongoing discussion is the rise of data-centric approaches to research in geography that further expand the capabilities of spatial analysis and add to the expected knowledge of a GIS user and analyst. Building on a panel discussion at the 2016 American Association of Geographers (AAG) annual meeting, as well as informal dialogues on Twitter and other social media platforms that navigate this issue in academics and industry, this article explores how skills in research computing and programming operate in geography and GIS, especially given the rise of data-centric approaches to research in these realms. Some topics, like the costs and benefits of open and closed source software, are familiar from previous discussions in geography and GIS. Others, though, like the reward structures and recognition for computing skills or programming ability, have not been widely considered given the current landscape.  相似文献

作为一个在中国发轫较晚的人文地理学分支,社会文化地理学逐渐成为人文地理学的重要分支。随着研究话题的日新月异以及研究方法和理论的推陈出新,中国社会文化地理学的理论和应用研究在近年(2015—2020年)得到越来越多学者的关注和参与,同时涌现出一系列新的学科现象和值得反思的问题,如话题的多样性、研究方法的交叉性、研究科学性的反思和质疑等。因此,从延续学科自省的视角出发,有必要坚持从中、西对比的角度,不断度量中国社会文化地理学的发展趋势,定位学科的特点,以期为国内社会文化地理研究提供一定的方向和启示。借助文献分析工具对2015—2020年中、英文领域主要学术期刊的社会文化地理学文献进行采集和分析,辅以德尔菲法对学科专家进行咨询,尝试结合客观和主观数据,综合辨析当前中外社会文化地理学的研究特色,以及未来中国社会文化地理学研究可能的发展方向和潜力所在。从分析结果上看,国外社会文化地理研究话题涵盖:1)从移民研究到流动性研究;2)从文化景观研究到超越人类的地理学研究;3)弱势人群研究与关怀地理学等方面。中国社会文化地理研究话题包括:1)理论引介与反思;2)城镇化、流动性与多元移民;3)旅游与地方;4)乡村转型与乡愁等方面。综合国内外社会文化地理研究成果可知,西方国家(尤其是英国)作为社会文化地理学的重要发源地,在学科知识“生产—消费”循环中保持优势地位;西方社会文化地理学研究重点关注国际大政治和日常政治话题,而中国社会文化地理研究与旅游和乡村话题结合紧密,与西方形成明显区别,反映中国社会发展需要;中国社会文化地理学国际化趋势明显,但中、西方知识交换程度不高,知识边界依然明显。另外,专家咨询意见也凸显社会文化地理研究者的学科归属感有待加强、研究范式系统化不足与共识不充分等问题。未来中国社会文化地理学需要不断推进学科交叉和方法创新,探索其地理学本质,在国际化进程中讲好中国故事,总结中国经验,发展中国理论,服务国家,对话世界。  相似文献
