The First International Symposium on Diving Science and Technology Convened in China

The First International Symposium on Diving Technology, Physiology and Medicine 1986,Shanghai, China, sponsored by Chinese Society of Oceanography was held during 27-28, September.Fourteen foreign professors and experts from the United States, Japan, FRG, Norway, Swedenand Hong Kong attended the meeting. More than seventy Chinese experts were present. Mr. Luo Yuru, President of Chinese Society of Oceanography, made the opening speech, andProf. Yang You. Vice President of Chinese Ocean Engineering Society, delivered the closing address.     

Mixed layer in the Sea of Japan: numerical simulation and long-term data analysis

Seasonal variation and topography of the mixed layer in the Sea of Japan are studied by comparison of results from long-term observation data analysis and from numerical simulation with the MHI oceanic model (Shapiro. 1998. Marine Hydrophysical Journal, 6:26～40). The data are retrieved from Oceanographic Atlas of the Bering Sea, Okhotsk Sea, and Japan/East Sea (Rostov, Rostov, Dmitrieva, et al. 2003. Pacific Oceanography, 1 (1):70-72). The simulated and long-term patterns are compared. An impact of surface buoyancy flux, wind, and convergence/divergence of surface currents upon the mixed layer in the Sea of Japan is analyzed.     

Calculation of circulation in the South China Sea during summer of 2000 by the modified inverse method

On the basis of hydrographic data obtained in August 2000 cruise, the circulation in the South China Sea (SCS) is computed by the modified inverse method in combination with SSH data from TOPEX/ERS-2 analysis. For study of the dynamical mechanism, which causes the pattern of summer circulation in the SCS, the diagnostic model (Yuan et al. 1982. Acta Oceanologica Sinica,4(1):1-11; Yuan and Su. 1992. Numerical Computation of Physical Oceanography.474-542) is used to simulate numerically the summer circulation in the SCS. The following results

<正>1The unique ocean forecasting system (OFS) based on FIO-COM The OFS is based on the surface wave-tide-circulation coupled ocean model developed by the First Institute of Oceanography(FIO-COM), Ministry of Natural Resources, China. The half-century challenge that ocean circulation models must address is that the forecasting/simulated sea surface temperature overheats while the sub-surface temperature is too cold, especially during the summer.

Two new species of Eirenidae from the coast of southeast China

Through the examination of 377 samples collected from the Taiwan Straits, two new species of Eirenidae, i. e. , Eirene octonemalis n. sp. and Eutima krampi n. sp. are described. All type specimens are deposited at the Department of Oceanography, Xiamen University.

DIATOMS FROM THE SURFACE SEDIMENTS OF THE EAST CHINA SEA

Before the present investigation, there were only 20 species of diatoms recorded fromthe continental shelf of the East China Sea. All the surface sediments were collected bythe First and Second Institutes of Oceanography, National Bureau of Oceanography fromOct. to Nov. of 1977. Three sections including 26 stations were selected in almost equaldistances from each other at random, from a range of 28°30′N to 32°30′N, and fromthe coastal region to 129°E. Their exact positions are plotted in Fig. 1. About 50 grams of samples from each station were taken, and treated with diluteHCl, Conc.
