Si+4 Content of natural phengites
The chemical compositions of white micas separated from adjacent rocks of glaucophane and greenschist facies are compared with respect to their Si+4 content. The micas are predominantly phengitic, i.e. between muscovite, K[Al2Si3AlO10(OH)2] and celadonite, K[(R+2R+3)Si4O10(OH)2] in composition. Constancy of Si content in micas coming from rocks of different bulk chemical composition but closely similar physical conditions indicates that the silica content of a potassic dioctahedral mica can be used to indicate the pressure and temperature conditions of its formation. This conclusion is in part based upon previous experimental data obtained for synthetic phengites.

A mica whose structural formula: (K1.76Na0.31)(Fe2.22Mn1.29Mg0.99Ti0.28Al0.240.98) ·(Si7.33Al0.67)O20.26(F2.16OH1.58) closely approximates that of tetrasilicic potassium mica K2(M 5 2+ )Si8O20(OH,F)4 where M2+ represents Mg2+, Fe2+, Mn2+, ..., has been discovered in the matrix of a peralkaline rhyolite (comendite) of the Mont-Dore massif (France). These micas had been obtained previously by synthesis only. In the groundmass of the rock, the micaceous phase is accompanied by a manganoan arfvedsonite, pyrophanite, magnetite, apatite, sphene, zircon and fluorite. The crystallographic properties of the mica are typically that of a tetrasilicic mica, with d 060 = 1.533Å and space group C2/m. There is a regular decrease of d 060 (parameter b) with the ionic radius of the octahedral cation in synthetic micas containing Fe2+, Co2+, Mg2+, Ni2+. The purely Mn2+ end-member could not be synthesised; its instability is discussed on the basis of structural considerations. The conditions of crystallization of the micaceous phase are estimated to be 760 ° C, 800 bars with a f o 2=10–14.7 bar. This mica has crystallized from a residual liquid, with high activity of silica and low activity of alumina, whose origin is discussed. The name MONT-DORITE is proposed for this natural tetrasilicic mica having Fe/Fe+Mg >1/2 and Fe/Fe+Mn >1/2. This name is from the stratovolcano Mont-Dore.

A series of alumina-free micas was synthesized hydrothermally in the potassium-poor portion of the system K2O-MgO-SiO2-H2O. One end member of this series has the composition KMg2.5[Si4O10](OH)2, which, because of its octahedral occupancy, is intermediate between the dioctahedral and trioctahedral micas. From this end member a series of mica solid solutions extends towards more Mg-rich compositions. Single phase micas were obtained along the substitution line 2Mg for Si which appears to involve incorporation of part of the Mg in tetrahedral sites. It leads to a theoretical end member with a structural formula KMg3[Si3.5Mg0.5O10](OH)2. Solid solutions containing up to 75 mole % of this theoretical end member could be synthesized. The observed densities, water contents, and a one-dimensional Fourier synthesis are consistent with the assumed substitution. At 1 kb fluid pressure and 620° C the Si-rich end member KMg2.5[Si4O10](OH)2 decomposes to a more Mg-rich mica, the roedderite phase K2Mg5Si12O30, liquid, and H2O-rich vapor. With increasing Mg-content the thermal stability of the mica solid solutions increases up to 860°C at a composition of about K2O·6.2MgO·7.4SiO2·2H2O, i.e. KMg2.8[Si3.7Mg0.3O10](OH)2. This mica disintegrates directly into forsterite + liquid + H2O-rich vapor. The mica phase richest in Mg with a composition of about K2O·6.5MgO·7.25SiO2·2H2O, i.e. KMg2.875 [Si3.625Mg0.375O10](OH)2, breaks down at 765° C into forsterite, a more Si-rich mica, liquid, and H2O-rich vapor. This binary series of alumina-free micas forms a complete series of ternary solid solutions with normal phlogopite, KMg3[Si3AlO10](OH)2. Analyses of some natural phlogopites showing Si in excess of 3.0 (up to 3.18) per formula unit can be explained through this ternary miscibility range.

Summary Synthesis of Mn-bearing ilvaites, CaFe 2–x 2+ MnxFe3+ [Si2O7/O/(OH)], with 0 x 0.19, have been performed under hydrothermal conditions at 2 and 3 kbars, T = 300 -400°C and at oxygen fugacities defined by the Fe2O3/Fe3O4 - and the Ni/NiO -buffer. As shown by X-ray diffraction, the substitution of Fe2+ by Mn2+ decreases the monoclinic angle and causes a phase transition from monoclinic to orthorhombic at x = 0.19. The Fe-distribution has been determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Uvarovite (Ca3Cr2Si3O12) forms a complete solid solution series with andradite (Ca3Fe 2 +3 Si3O12) below 1,137±5 ° C at a total pressure of 1 atm. Pure uvarovite decomposes to pseudowollastonite (CaSiO3)+eskolaite (Cr2O3) at 1,385 ± 10 ° C. The incorporation of Ca3Fe 2 +3 Si3O12 component in the uvarovite structure lowers the thermal stability of the garnet. The breakdown assemblage is garnetss (Ca3(Cr,Fe+3 2)Si3O12)+pseudowollastonite (CaSiO3)+hemeskolaitess(Cr,Fe+3O3). Pure andradite decomposes to pseudowollastonite (CaSiO3)+hematite (Fe2O3) at 1,137±5 °C. Andradite thermal stability is increased by incorporation of Ca3Cr2Si3O12 component by 248 °C.At 1,264±5 °C pseudowollastonite+hematite react to liquid defining a thermal minimum of the CaSiO3-Cr2O3-Fe2O3 ternary system. This minimum is located at about 64.5 wt.-% CaSiO3, 0.5 wt.-% Cr2O3, and 35.0 wt.-% Fe2O3. Uvarovite and andradite bulk compositions start to melt at 1,420 °C and 1,265 ±5 °C, respectively. The unit-cell parameter for uvarovite is 11.999 (2) Å, the refractive index 1.866 (2). The substitution of Cr+3 by Fe+3 increases a and n almost linearly toward the andradite end member which displays a unit-cell parameter of 12.059 (3) Å and a refractive index of 1.887 (2).

The critical role of iron on crystal-silicate liquid relationships and melt differentiation is mainly controlled by the redox conditions prevailing in magmas, but the presently available database merely constrains the thermodynamic properties of iron-bearing components in strongly reduced and anhydrous molten silicate where iron is in the ferrous form. This paper provides new standard states for pure ferrous (FeOliq) and ferric (Fe2O3liq) molten iron oxides and extends the experimental database towards oxidizing and water-bearing domains. Iron-iridium, iron-platinum alloys, magnetite or hematite were equilibrated with synthetic silicic liquids at high temperature and high pressure under controlled oxygen fugacity (fO2) to determine activity-composition relationships for FeOliq and Fe2O3liq. Between 1000 and 1300°C, the fO2 ranges from that in air to 3-log units below that of the nickel-nickel oxide buffer (NNO). Experiments were performed on both anhydrous and hydrous melts containing up to 6-wt.% water. Incorporation of water under reducing conditions increases the activity coefficient of FeOliq but has an opposite effect on Fe2O3liq. As calcium is added to system, the effect of water becomes weaker and is inverted for Fe2O3liq. Under oxidizing conditions, water has a negligible effect on both activities of FeOliq and Fe2O3liq. In contrast, changes in redox conditions dominate the activity coefficients of both FeOliq and Fe2O3liq, which increase significantly with increasing fO2. The present results combined with the previous work provide a specific database on the energetics of iron in silicate melts that cover most of the condition prevailing in natural magmas.

Abstract Chemical analysis (including H2, F2, FeO, Fe2O3) of a Mg-vesuvianite from Georgetown, Calif., USA, yields a formula, Ca18.92Mg1.88Fe3+0.40Al10.97Si17.81- O69.0.1(OH)8.84F0.14, in good agreement on a cation basis with the analysis reported by Pabst (1936). X-ray and electron diffraction reveal sharp reflections violating the space group P4/nnc as consistent with domains having space groups P4/n and P4nc. Refinement of the average crystal structure in space group P4/nnc is consistent with occupancy of the A site with Al, of the half-occupied B site by 0.8 Mg and 0.2 Fe, of the half-occupied C site by Ca, of the Ca (1,2,3) sites by Ca, and the OH and O(10) sites by OH and O. We infer an idealized formula for Mg-vesuvianite to be Ca19Mg(MgAl7)Al4Si18O69(OH)9, which is related to Fe3+-vesuvianite by the substitutions Mg + OH = Fe3++ O in the B and O(10) sites and Fe3+= Al in the AlFe site. Thermodynamic calculations using this formula for Mg-vesuvianite are consistent with the phase equilibria of Hochella, Liou, Keskinen & Kim (1982) but inconsistent with those of Olesch (1978). Further work is needed in determining the composition and entropy of synthetic vs natural vesuvianite before quantitative phase equilibria can be dependably generated. A qualitative analysis of reactions in the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O-CO2 shows that assemblages with Mg-vesuvianite are stable to high T in the absence of quartz and require water-rich conditions (XH2O > 0.8). In the presence of wollastonite, Mg-vesuvianite requires very water-rich conditions (XH2O > 0.97).

This work reports the synthesis of ferri-clinoholmquistite, nominally Li2(Mg3Fe3+2)Si8O22(OH)2, at varying fO2 conditions. Amphibole compositions were characterized by X-ray (powder and single-crystal) diffraction, microchemical (EMPA) and spectroscopic (FTIR, Mössbauer and Raman) techniques. Under reducing conditions ( NNO+1, where NNO = Nickel–Nickel oxide buffer), the amphibole yield is very high (>90%), but its composition, and in particular the FeO/Fe2O3 ratio, departs significantly from the nominal one. Under oxidizing conditions ( NNO+1.5), the amphibole yield is much lower (<60%, with Li-pyroxene abundant), but its composition is close to the ideal stoichiometry. The exchange vector of relevance for the studied system is M2(Mg,Fe2+) M4(Mg,Fe2+) M2Fe3+–1 M4Li–1, which is still rather unexplored in natural systems. Amphibole crystals of suitable size for structure refinement were obtained only at 800 °C, 0.4 GPa and NNO conditions (sample 152), and have C2/m symmetry. The X-ray powder patterns for all other samples were indexed in the same symmetry; the amphibole closest to ideal composition has a = 9.428(1) Å, b = 17.878(3) Å, c = 5.282(1) Å, = 102.06(2)°, V = 870.8(3) Å3. Mössbauer spectra show that Fe3+ is strongly ordered at M2 in all samples, whereas Fe2+ is disordered over the B and C sites. FTIR analysis shows that the amount of CFe2+ increases for increasingly reducing conditions. FTIR data also provide strong evidence for slight but significant amounts of Li at the A sites.

The phase K2Mg5Si12O30 was synthesized both hydrothermally and dry under a variety of pressures and temperatures, and its stability relations were determined. Under hydrothermal conditions it exhibits a lower stability limit lying at 595°C, 1 kb, and 650°C, 2 kb, due to its breakdown into the hydrous assemblage quartz+KMg2.5Si4O10(OH)2 (a mica phase). Its upper temperature stability under hydrothermal conditions is given by its incongruent melting to MgSiO3+liquid. Near 820° C at a fluid pressure of approximately 6.5 kb the two univariant curves for these breakdown reactions intersect thus limiting the stability field to lower fluid pressures. — Under anhydrous conditions K2Mg5Si12O30 becomes unstable at pressures between approximately 7 and 32.5 kb due to its incongruent melting to the assemblage MgSiO3+quartz (or coesite)+liquid; this melting curve has a pronounced negative slope. No subsolidus breakdown assemblage was encountered at 32.5 kb down to temperatures as low as 750°C. This behavior is probably due to the instability of other ternary compounds in the system K2O-MgO-SiO2 at high pressures and thus to the existence of very low-temperature eutectics involving only binary and unary solid phases plus liquid. It is likely that these stability relations provide a model for those of the natural minerals merrihueite and roedderite which contain Na and Fe+2 partly substituting for K and Mg and which were encountered in several meteorites. Therefore, the cosmic events leading to the formation of these minerals must have taken place at relatively low pressures and high temperatures, especially when water was present. The bulk compositions of these minerals appear to be incompatible with average chondritic matter under equilibrium conditions. Hence merrihueite and roedderite are not likely to be found in equilibrated chondrites which contain feldspars instead.

Amphiboles and pyroxenes occurring in the Salton Sea Geothermal Field were found to contain coherent intergrowths of chain silicates with other than double and single chain widths by using transmission and analytical electron microscopy. Both occur in the biotite zone at the temperature (depth) interval of 310° C (1,060 m) to 330° C (1,547m) which approximately corresponds to temperatures of the greenschist facies. The amphiboles occur as euhedral fibrous crystals occupying void space and are composed primarily of irregularly alternating (010) slabs of double or triple chains, with rare quadruple and quintuple chains. Primary crystallization from solution results in euhedral crystals. Clinopyroxenes formed mainly as a porefilling cement and subordinately as prismatic crystals coexisting with fibrous amphiboles. Fine lamellae of double and triple chains are irregularly intercalated with pyroxene. AEM analyses yield formulae (Ca1.8Mg2.9Fe1.9Mn0.1) Si8O21.8(OH)1.8 (310° C) and (Ca2.0Fe2.5Mg2.3) Si8O21.8 (OH)2.0 (330° C) for amphiboles and (Ca1.1Fe0.6Mg0.3) Si2O6 for clinopyroxene. Thermodynamic calculations at Pfluid=100 bar of equilibrium reactions of (1) 3 chlorite +10 calcite + 21 quartz = 3 actinolite + 2 clinozoisite + 8 H2O + 10 CO2 and (2) actinolite+ 3 calcite+ 2 quartz = 5 clinopyroxene + H2O + 3 CO2 using Mg-end member phases indicate that formation of amphibole and pyroxene require very water-rich conditions at temperatures below 330° C.Contribution No. 420 from the Mineralogical Laboratory, Department of Geological Sciences, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Deerite, Fe 12 2+ Fe 6 3+ [Si12O40](OH)10, thus far known from ten localities in glaucophane schist terranes, was synthesized at water pressures of 20–25 kb and temperatures of 550–600 °C under the of the Ni/NiO buffer. The X-ray powder diagram, lattice constants and infrared spectrum of the synthetic phase are closely similar to those of the natural mineral. A solid solution series extends from this ferri-deerite end member to some 20 mole % of a hypothetical alumino-deerite, Fe 12 2+ Al 6 3+ [Si12O40](OH)10. The upper temperature breakdown of ferri-deerite to the assemblage ferrosilite +magnetite+quartz+water occurs at about 490 °C at 15 kb, and 610 °C at 25 kb fluid pressure for the of the Ni/NiO buffer. Extrapolation of these data to lower water pressures indicates that deerite can be a stable mineral only in very low-temperature, high-pressure environments.

The model for the thermodynamic properties of multicomponent pyroxenes (Part I) is calibrated for ortho- and clinopyroxenes in the quadrilateral subsystem defined by the end-member components Mg2Si2O6, CaMgSi2O6, CaFeSi2O6, and Fe2Si2O6. This calibration accounts for: (1) Fe-Mg partitioning relations between orthopyroxenes and augites, and between pigeonites and augites, (2) miscibility gap features along the constituent binary joins CaMgSi2O6-Mg2Si2O6 and CaFeSi2O6-Fe2Si2O6, (3) calorimetric data for CaMgSi2O6-Mg2Si2O6 pyroxenes, and (4) the P-T-X systematics of both the reaction pigeonite=orthopyroxene+augite, and miscibility gap featurs, over the temperature and pressure ranges 800–1500°C and 0–30 kbar. The calibration is achieved with the simplifying assumption that all regular-solution-type parameters are constants independent of temperature. It is predicated on the assumptions that: (1) the Ca-Mg substitution is more nonideal in Pbca pyroxenes than in C2/c pyroxenes, and (2) entropies of about 3 and 6.5 J/K-mol are associated with the change of Ca from 6- to 8-fold coordination in the M2 site in magnesian and iron C2/c pyroxenes, respectively. The model predicts that Fe2+-Mg2+ M1-M2 site preferences in C2/c pyroxenes are highly dependent on Ca and Mg contents, with Fe2+ more strongly preferring M2 sites both in Ca-rich C2/c pyroxenes with a given Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratio, and in magnesian C2/c pyroxenes with intermediate Ca/(Ca+Fe+Mg) ratios. The proposed model is internally consistent with our previous analyses of the solution properties of spinels, rhombohedral oxides, and Fe-Mg olivines and orthpyroxenes. Results of our calibration extend an existing database to include estimates for the thermodynamic properties of the C2/c and Pbca pyroxene end-members clinoenstatite, clinoferrosilite, hedenbergite, orthodiopside, and orthohedenbergite. Phase relations within the quadrilateral and its constitutent subsystems are calculated for temperatures and pressures over the range 800–1700°C and 0–50 kbar and compare favorably with experimental constraints.

Summary Anandite has an approximate formula of Ba(Fe3+, Fe2+)3[Si2(Fe3+, Fe2+, Si)2O10–x(OH)x] (S, Cl) (OH), withx=0–1, and belongs to the 2 O brittle mica group. It is orthorhombic; space groupPnmn;a=5.468(9) Å,b=9.489(18)Å,c=19.963(11) Å;Z=4.The structure was determined from 3dim. Weissenberg-data, starting with an approximate structure in the pseudo space groupCcmm. Least squares refinement resulted inR=0.061 for 409 photometric intensities, andR=0.131 for all 853 observedhkl-reflexions.The iron of the tetrahedral layer is concentrated in one of the two crystallographically different kinds of tetrahedra. The basal oxygen rings of the tetrahedral layer form approximate hexagons and have not the ditrigonal configuration of the common micas. This peculiarity is considered to be a consequence of the size and charge of the barium ion. The role of OH in the common micas is played partly by S2– and Cl in anandite.

Iron-57 resonant absorption Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to describe the redox relations and structural roles of Fe3+ and Fe2+ in meta-aluminosilicate glasses. Melts were formed at 1500 °C in equilibrium with air and quenched to glass in liquid H2O with quenching rates exceeding 200 °C/s. The aluminosilicate compositions were NaAlSi2O6, Ca0.5AlSi2O6, and Mg0.5AlSi2O6. Iron oxide was added in the form of Fe2O3, NaFeO2, CaFe2O4, and MgFe2O4 with total iron oxide content in the range ∼0.9 to ∼5.6 mol% as Fe2O3. The Mössbauer spectra, which were deconvoluted by assuming Gaussian distributions of the hyperfine field, are consistent with one absorption doublet of Fe2+ and one of Fe3+. From the area ratios of the Fe2+ and Fe3+ absorption doublets, with corrections for differences in recoil-fractions of Fe3+ and Fe2+, the Fe3+/ΣFe is positively correlated with increasing total iron content and with decreasing ionization potential of the alkali and alkaline earth cation. There is a distribution of hyperfine parameters from the Mössbauer spectra of these glasses. The maximum in the isomer shift distribution function of Fe3+, δFe3+, ranges from about 0.25 to 0.49 mm/s (at 298 K relative to Fe metal) with the quadrupole splitting maximum, ΔFe3+, ranging from ∼1.2 to ∼1.6 mm/s. Both δFe3+ and δFe2+ are negatively correlated with total iron oxide content and Fe3+/ΣFe. The dominant oxygen coordination number Fe3+ changes from 4 to 6 with decreasing Fe3+/ΣFe. The distortion of the Fe3+-O polyhedra of the quenched melts (glasses) decreases as the Fe3+/ΣFe increases. These polyhedra do, however, coexist with lesser proportions of polyhedra with different oxygen coordination numbers. The δFe2+ and ΔFe2+ distribution maxima at 298 K range from ∼0.95 to 1.15 mm/s and 1.9 to 2.0 mm/s, respectively, and decrease with increasing Fe3+/ΣFe. We suggest that these hyperfine parameter values for the most part are more consistent with Fe2+ in a range of coordination states from 4- to 6-fold. The lower δFe2+-values for the most oxidized melts are consistent with a larger proportion of Fe2+ in 4-fold coordination compared with more reduced glasses and melts.

The paper reports original thermochemical data on six natural amphibole samples of different composition. The data were obtained by high-temperature melt solution calorimetry in a Tian–Calvet microcalorometer and include the enthalpies of formation from elements for actinolite Ca1.95(Mg4.4Fe 0.5 2+ Al01)[Si8.0O22](OH)2(–12024 ± 13 kJ/mol) and Ca2.0(Mg2.9Fe 1.9 2+ Fe 0.2 3+ )[Si7.8Al0.2O22](OH)2, (–11462 ± 18 kJ/mol), and Na0.1Ca2.0(Mg3.2Fe 1.6 2+ Fe 0.2 3+ )[Si7.7Al0.3O22](OH)2 (–11588 ± 14 kJ/mol); for pargasite Na0.5K0.5Ca2.0-(Mg3.4Fe 1.8 2+ Al0.8)[Si6.2Al1.8O22](OH)2 (–12316 ± 10 kJ/mol) and Na0.8K0.2Ca2.0(Mg2.8Fe 1.3 3+ Al0.9) [Si6.1Al1.9O22](OH)2 (–12 223 ± 9 kJ/mol); and for hastingsite Na0.3K0.2Ca2.0(Mg0.4Fe 1.3 2+ Fe 0.9 3+ Al0.2) [Si6.4Al1.6O22](OH)2 (?10909 ± 11 kJ/mol). The standard entropy, enthalpy, and Gibbs free energy of formation are estimated for amphiboles of theoretical composition: end members and intermediate members of the isomorphic series tremolite–ferroactinolite, edenite–ferroedenite, pargasite–ferropargasite, and hastingsite.

Growing recognition of triple-chain silicates in nature has prompted experimental research into the conditions under which they can form and the extent of solid solution that is feasible for some key chemical substitutions. Experiments were done primarily in the range of 0.1–0.5 GPa and 200–850 °C for durations of 18–1,034 h. A wide range of bulk compositions were explored in this study that can be classified broadly into two groups: those that are Na free and involve various possible chemical substitutions into jimthompsonite (Mg10Si12O32(OH)4), and those that are Na bearing and involve chemical substitutions into the ideal end-member Na4Mg8Si12O32(OH)4. Numerous attempts to synthesize jimthompsonite or clinojimthompsonite were unsuccessful despite the type of starting material used (reagent oxides, magnesite + SiO2, talc + enstatite, or anthophyllite). Similarly, the chemical substitutions of F for OH, Mn2+, Ca2+, or Fe2+ for Mg2+, and 2Li+ for Mg2+ and a vacancy were unsuccessful at nucleating triple-chain silicates. Conversely, nearly pure yields of monoclinic triple-chain silicate could be made at temperatures of 440–630 °C and 0.2 GPa from the composition Na4Mg8Si12O32(OH)4, as found in previous studies, though its composition is most likely depleted in Na as evidenced by electron microprobe and FTIR analysis. Pure yields of triple-chain silicate were also obtained for the F-analog composition Na4Mg8Si12O32F4 at 550–750 °C and 0.2–0.5 GPa if a flux consisting of Na-halide salt and water in a 2:1 ratio by weight was used. In addition, limited chemical substitution could be documented for the substitutions of 2 Na+ for Na+ + H+ and of Mg2+ + vacancy for 2Na+. For the former, the Na content appears to be limited to 2.5 cations giving the ideal composition of Na2.5Mg8Si12O30.5(OH)5.5, while for the latter substitution the Na content may go as low as 1.1 cations giving the composition Na1.1Mg9.4Si12O31.9(OH)4.1 based on a fixed number of Si cations. Further investigation involving Mg for Na cation exchange may provide a pathway for the synthesis of Na-free clinojimthompsonite. Fairly extensive solid solution was also observed for triple-chain silicates made along the compositional join Na4Mg8Si12O32(OH)4–Ca2Mg8Si12O32(OH)4 where the limit of Ca substitution at 450 °C and 0.2 GPa corresponds to Na0.7Ca1.8Mg7.8Si12O31.9(OH)4.1 (with the OH content adjusted to achieve charge balance). Aside from the Na content, this composition is similar to that observed as wide-chain lamellae in host actinolite. The relative ease with which Na-rich triple chains can be made experimentally suggests that these phases might exist in nature; this study provides additional insights into the range of compositions and formation conditions at which they might occur.
