The characteristics of galaxies with and without a bar in the infrared range are compared, using two complete samples that we have compiled. The data obtained show that star formation occurs more actively in barred galaxies than in galaxies without a bar, which it is natural to believe is a consequence of the presence of the bar itself. Environment plays an important role in the evolution of the gas contents of galaxies. Gas deficiency of cluster spirals and the role of the hot intracluster medium in stripping gas from these galaxies is a well-studied subject. Loose groups with diffuse X-ray emission from the intragroup medium (IGM) offer an intermediate environment between clusters and groups without a hot IGM. These X-ray bright groups have smaller velocity dispersion and lower temperature than clusters, but higher IGM density than loose groups without diffuse X-ray emission. A single-dish comparative study of loose groups with and without diffuse X-ray emission from the IGM, showed that the galaxies in X-ray bright groups have lost more gas on average than the galaxies in non X-ray bright groups. In this paper we present GMRT H  i observations of 13 galaxies from four X-ray bright groups: NGC 5044, 720, 1550 and IC1459. The aim of this work is to study the morphology of H  i in these galaxies and to see if the hot IGM has in any way affected their H  i content or distribution. In addition to disturbed H  i morphology, we find that most galaxies have shrunken H  i discs compared to the field spirals. This indicates that IGM-assisted stripping processes like ram pressure may have stripped gas from the outer edges of the galaxies.  相似文献

The radio and xray properties of spiral galaxies with and without a bar are discussed on the basis of complete samples that we have compiled. The two types of spirals are shown not to differ from one another in emission power in the two indicated ranges. In the case of SB galaxies, the luminosities in the IR, radio, and xray ranges are closely related. The spectral indices of SB and SA galaxies in the 1.4–5 GHz range are the same, on the average. In the case of barred galaxies, however, a definite dependence is observed between the spectral index and both the IR and × ray luminosities, i.e., the spectral index increases as both luminosities increase. It is assumed that this is caused by the bar itself, which stimulates star formation in a barred galaxy. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 41. No. 4, pp. 599–608, October–December, 1998.  相似文献

The gas properties of barred and unbarred spiral galaxies are compared in two complete samples. It is found that two types of spiral galaxies do not differ from each other in atomic and molecular gas contents. On average there is 6 times more HI than H2 in spiral galaxies and the ratio MH2/MHI decreases from early to late types. The barred and unbarred spirals in general show a similar behaviors of the gas-to-luminosity relationships, but also there are certain differences between them such as correlation of two gas phases (HI and H2)for unbarred galaxies. It is suggested that different behaviors of two types galaxies are due to the higher star forming activity of barred with respect unbarred spirals. The expected values of HI and H2 gas contents have been estimated using blue and far-infrared emission. Published in Astrofizika, Vol. 43, No. 3, pp. 405-410, July–September, 2000.  相似文献

We have derived the X-ray luminosities of a sample of galaxies in groups, making careful allowance for contaminating intragroup emission. The L X: L B and L X: L FIR relations of spiral galaxies in groups appear to be indistinguishable from those in other environments, however the elliptical galaxies fall into two distinct classes. The first class is central-dominant group galaxies, which are very X-ray luminous and may be the focus of group cooling flows. All other early-type galaxies in groups belong to the second class, which populates an almost constant band of L X/ L B over the range 9.8< log  L B<11.3 . The X-ray emission from these galaxies can be explained by a superposition of discrete galactic X-ray sources together with a contribution from hot gas lost by stars, which varies a great deal from galaxy to galaxy. In the region where the optical luminosity of the non-central group galaxies overlaps with the dominant galaxies, the dominant galaxies are over an order of magnitude more luminous in X-rays.
We also compared these group galaxies with a sample of isolated early-type galaxies, and used previously published work to derive L X: L B relations as a function of environment. The non-dominant group galaxies have mean L X/ L B ratios very similar to those of isolated galaxies, and we see no significant correlation between L X/ L B and environment. We suggest that previous findings of a steep L X: L B relation for early-type galaxies result largely from the inclusion of group-dominant galaxies in samples.  相似文献

The relationship of high surface brightness Arakelian galaxies (ArG) to their environment is studied. This is done using the groups identified by the authors on the basis of the CfA2 red shift survey. Of the 15577 galaxies in the sample, 172 (1.104%) have a high surface brightness. The corresponding percentage for the galaxies with 13.0 < m ≤ 15.0 is 2.05. The following results are obtained: (a) On going from single to poor groups and on to more populated groups, the frequency of occurrence of ArG does not vary. (b) Groups of galaxies containing ArG do not differ on the average from groups which do not contain such galaxies in terms of their dynamic characteristics, such as the dispersion in radial velocity, size, and total luminosity, or their morphological content. (c) ArG do not follow the regular pattern according to which elliptical and lenticular galaxies are more often encountered in groups of galaxies than among single galaxies, i.e., it seems that the frequency of occurrence of elliptical and lenticular ArG in groups is the same as in single galaxies. (d) The surface brightnesses, diameters, and luminosities of ArG in groups of galaxies are greater than those of single ArG. This shows up especially strongly in spiral ArG.  相似文献

We present measurements of the angular correlation function of galaxies selected from a B J ∼23.5 multicolour survey of two 5°×5° fields located at high galactic latitudes. The galaxy catalogue of ∼4×105 galaxies is comparable in size to catalogues used to determine the galaxy correlation function at low redshift. Measurements of the z ∼0.4 correlation function at large angular scales show no evidence for a break from a power law, although our results are not inconsistent with a break at ≳15 h−1 Mpc. Despite the large fields-of-view, there are large discrepancies between the measurements of the correlation function in each field, possibly caused by dwarf galaxies within z ∼0.11 clusters near the South Galactic Pole.
Colour selection is used to study the clustering of galaxies from z ∼0 to z ∼0.4. The galaxy correlation function is found to depend strongly on colour, with red galaxies more strongly clustered than blue galaxies by a factor of ≳5 at small scales. The slope of the correlation function is also found to vary with colour, with γ∼1.8 for red galaxies and γ∼1.5 for blue galaxies. The clustering of red galaxies is consistently strong over the entire magnitude range studied, although there are large variations between the two fields. The clustering of blue galaxies is extremely weak over the observed magnitude range, with clustering consistent with r 0∼2 h−1 Mpc. This is weaker than the clustering of late-type galaxies in the local Universe, and suggests that galaxy clustering is more strongly correlated with colour than morphology. This may also be the first detection of a substantial low-redshift galaxy population with clustering properties similar to faint blue galaxies.  相似文献

The CfAl Catalog of Huchra et al. is examined for identification of groups of galaxies with the use of a variation of the percolation method previously used by Huchra and Geller. The main difference between our method and Huchra-Geller method is in the selection criterion for components. We use the value of the gravitational field potential to determine component galaxies. This approach is physically more valid than the distances between galaxies. It is shown that the selection parameters E0 and V0 need not be changed with distance to account for changes in the observed luminosity function of galaxies. Thus, it is unnecessary in our approach to use the luminosity function of galaxies for identification of groups. The dependence of the main characteristics of groups on the selection parameters is investigated. The interval of the selection parameters within which the group characteristics are least dependent on these parameters is determined. Groups of galaxies detected with any pairs of E0 and V0 values from these intervals can be considered essentially real. Gas deficiency in cluster spirals is well known and ram-pressure stripping is considered the main gas removal mechanism. In some compact groups too gas deficiency is reported. However, gas deficiency in loose groups is not yet well established. Lower dispersion of the member velocities and the lower density of the intragroup medium in small loose groups favour tidal stripping as the main gas removal process in them. Recent releases of data from the H  i Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) and catalogues of nearby loose groups with associated diffuse X-ray emission have allowed us to test this notion. In this paper, we address the following questions: (i) do galaxies in groups with diffuse X-ray emission statistically have lower gas content compared to the ones in groups without diffuse X-ray emission? (ii) does H  i deficiency vary with the X-ray luminosity, L X, of the loose group in a systematic way? We find that (i) galaxies in groups with diffuse X-ray emission, on average, are H  i deficient, and have lost more gas compared to those in groups without X-ray emission; the latter are found not to have significant H  i deficiency; (ii) no systematic dependence of the H  i deficiency with L X is found. Ram-pressure-assisted tidal stripping and evaporation by thermal conduction are the two possible mechanisms to account for this excess gas loss.  相似文献

The large-scale structure around the Ophiuchus cluster of galaxies in the vicinity of the Galactic Centre ( l =05, b =95, cz =8500 km s−1) is investigated on the basis of a galaxy survey and spectroscopic observations made for a 12°×17° area. The galaxy survey was performed using six ESO/SERC Sky Survey Atlas films, and 4021 galaxies were detected in total. Recession velocities were newly obtained for 179 galaxies to make the total number of galaxies in the survey area with known velocities 219.
In the distribution of bright galaxies, we identified seven new clumps of galaxies. Comparing the surface number density of bright galaxies with the Galactic extinction, which is estimated from the 100‐μm flux density in the IRAS Sky Survey Atlas, we demonstrate that the seven clumps are not spurious as a result of the inhomogeneity of the Galactic extinction. Among the seven clumps, two are found to be clusters and four to be groups on the basis of the histogram of recession velocities and the number of member galaxies. The Ophiuchus cluster, two newly identified clusters, and four groups are all concentrated at 9000 km s−1. Field galaxies are also distributed centred at 8500 km s−1. Hence field galaxies occupy a common three-dimensional region with galaxies in the clusters and groups, and altogether they form a large-scale structure of supercluster size. As opposed to the overdensity in the supercluster region, the mean number density of galaxies in the velocity range 0–5000 km s−1 is only 25 per cent of the mean number density of the Universe, comparable with the density of the well-known Böotes void. Hence this nearby three-dimensional region in Ophiuchus is a void of galaxies also.  相似文献

In order to investigate the influence of environment on supernova (SN) production, we have performed a statistical investigation of the SNe discovered in isolated galaxies, in pairs and in groups of galaxies. 22 SNe in 18 isolated galaxies, 48 SNe in 40 galaxy members of 37 pairs and 211 SNe in 170 galaxy members of 116 groups have been selected and studied.
We found that the radial distributions of core-collapse SNe in galaxies located in different environments are similar, and consistent with those reported by Bartunov, Makarova & Tsvetkov . SNe discovered in pairs do not favour a particular direction with respect to the companion galaxy. Also, the azimuthal distributions inside the host members of galaxy groups are consistent with being isotropics. The fact that SNe are more frequent in the brighter components of the pairs and groups is expected from the dependence of the SN rates on the galaxy luminosity.
There is an indication that the SN rate is higher in galaxy pairs compared with that in groups. This can be related to the enhanced star formation rate in strongly interacting systems.
It is concluded that, with the possible exception of strongly interacting systems, the parent galaxy environment has no direct influence on SN production.  相似文献

On the basis of extensive observational material it is statistically demonstrated that dwarf galaxies appear more often around barred galaxies than around normal spiral galaxies. Moreover, the more barred spiral galaxies there are in a given region, the more dwarf galaxies are found there as well.Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 38, No. 1, pp. 45–53, January–March, 1995.  相似文献

We study the stellar population of galaxies with active star formation, determining ages of the stellar components by means of spectral population synthesis of their absorption spectra. The data consist of optical spectra of 185 nearby ( z 0.075) emission-line galaxies . They are mostly H  ii galaxies, but we also include some starbursts and Seyfert 2s, for comparison purposes. They were grouped into 19 high signal-to-noise ratio template spectra, according to their continuum distribution, absorption- and emission-line characteristics. The templates were then synthesized with a star cluster spectral base.
The synthesis results indicate that H  ii galaxies are typically age-composite stellar systems, presenting important contributions from generations up to as old as 500 Myr. We detect a significant contribution of populations with ages older than 1 Gyr in two groups of H  ii galaxies. The age distributions of stellar populations among starbursts can vary considerably despite similarities in the emission-line spectra. In the case of Seyfert 2 groups we obtain important contributions from the old population, consistent with a bulge.
From the diversity of star formation histories, we conclude that typical H  ii galaxies in the local Universe are not systems presently forming their first stellar generation.  相似文献

A sample of nearby galaxies (Schmidt and Boller 1992, paper I) has been analysed with regard to the luminosity function and the spatial distribution. The main results are as follows: (i) a relation between the slope of the luminosity function of the members of a group of galaxies and the earliest morphological type in this group has been detected which possibly is a new kind of environmental effects; (ii) the virial masses of the groups of galaxies are, on the average, by a factor 3 to 4 greater, only, than the luminous masses derived from the individual galaxy masses; (iii) the nearby galaxies are concentrated in a thin disk-like layer around the supergalactic plane the thickness of which is a few hundred kiloparsecs, only; (iv) a population of field galaxies with nearly constant density (about 3 per cent of the number density in the supergalactic plane) is extended into the voids on both the supergalactic hemispheres.  相似文献

Ram-pressure stripping can remove significant amounts of gas from galaxies that orbit in clusters and massive groups, and thus has a large impact on the evolution of cluster galaxies. In this paper, we reconstruct the present-day distribution of ram pressure and the ram-pressure histories of cluster galaxies. To this aim, we combine the Millennium Simulation and an associated semi-analytic model of galaxy evolution with analytic models for the gas distribution in clusters. We find that about one quarter of galaxies in massive clusters are subject to strong ram pressures that are likely to cause an expedient loss of all gas. Strong ram pressures occur predominantly in the inner core of the cluster, where both the gas density and the galaxy velocity are higher. Since their accretion on to a massive system, more than 64 per cent of galaxies that reside in a cluster today have experienced strong ram pressures of  >10−11 dyn cm−2  which most likely led to a substantial loss of the gas.  相似文献

The structures of compact groups of galaxies are compared with the structures of rich clusters of galaxies. It was established that there are structural similarities between these two types of clusters of galaxies. It is imaginable that these structures are typical for all such complexes of galaxies and that the different structures are due to different initial conditions at the beginning of their evolution. For a final answer on this question it is necessary to accumulate more observational material with respect to the distribution of galaxies in such clusters. As part of a larger programme the present paper contains the derived number-density distributions and core radii for ten clusters.  相似文献

Based on SDSS data, we have considered the spatial environment of galaxies with extended polar rings. We used two approaches: estimating the projected distance to the nearest companion and counting the number of companions as a function of the distance to the galaxy. Both approaches have shown that the spatial environment of polar-ring galaxies on scales of hundreds of kiloparsecs is, on average, less dense than that of galaxies without polar structures. Apparently, one of the main causes of this effect is that the polar structures in a denser environment are destroyed more often during encounters and mergers with other galaxies.  相似文献

82 compact galaxies with measured redshift present in systems containing partly normal galaxies have been found, using Zwicky's Catalogues and Morphological Catalogue. For them the mean residual redshift has been obtained. The chance probability for this result is 0.015. A high frequency of compact galaxies among those with large discrepant redshift is remarked. Relatively compact normal galaxies also reveal a positive mean value of . Redshift is correlated with magnitude in groups and pairs of compact galaxies, this depending in pairs on the linear separation and colours of the components. If a colour difference is present, the bluer member has the larger redshift in general. In contrast with the large luminosity deduced from the redshift for many field compacts, compact galaxies in systems are faint. The majority of the proposed associations between quasars and systems of normal galaxies are shown to be probably physical.  相似文献
