Using a homogenous sample of 1962 quasars with redshift 3.0≤z≲4.5 drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we study the relationships between radio loudness, virial black hole (BH) mass and Eddington ratio (accretion rate relative to the Eddington limit). For the radio-detected objects, we find a significant (>99.5 per cent) anticorrelation between radio loudness R parameter and BH mass, consistent with previous studies of low-redshift radio-loud quasars. The truly radio-loud quasars (R>30) are found to be confined to M BH≲1010 M within our sample. We also find that R is only weakly correlated with Eddington ratio L bol/L Edd. Combined with previous results on the low-redshift RL bol/L Edd relation, this result indicates no strong L bol/L Edd dependence of R at L bol/L Edd≳10−2. On the other hand, the large scatter in these relationships suggests that other physical properties such as BH spin and quasar clustering must also play an important role in quasar radio emission.  相似文献

We describe a model of spectral energy distribution in supercritical accretion disks (SCAD) based on the conception by Shakura and Sunyaev. We apply this model to five ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). In this approach, the disk becomes thick at distances to the center less than the spherization radius, and the temperature dependence is Tr ?1/2. In this region the disk luminosity is L bolL Edd $\ln \left( {{{\dot M} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\dot M} {\dot M_{Edd} }}} \right. \kern-0em} {\dot M_{Edd} }}} \right)$ , and strong wind arises forming a wind funnel above the disk. Outside the spherization radius, the disk is thin and its total luminosity is Eddington, L Edd. The thin disk heats the wind from below. From the inner side of the funnel the wind is heated by the supercritical disk. In this paper we do not consider Comptonization in the inner hot winds which must cover the deep supercritical disk regions. Our model is technically similar to the DISKIR model of Gierlinski et al. The models differ in disk type (standard—supercritical) and irradiation (disk—wind). We propose to distinguish between these two models in the X-ray region of about 0.3–1 keV, where the SCAD model has a flat νF ν spectrum, and the DISKIR model never has a flat part, as it is based on the standard α-disk. An important difference between the models can be found in their resulting black hole masses. In application to the ULX spectra, the DISKIR model yields black hole masses of a few hundred solar masses, whereas the SCAD model produces stellar-mass (about 10M) black holes.  相似文献

We investigate the relation between black hole mass, M bh, and jet power, Q jet, for a sample of BL Lacs and radio quasars. We find that BL Lacs are separated from radio quasars by the FR I/II dividing line in M bhQ jet plane, which strongly supports the unification scheme of FR I/BL Lac and FR II/radio quasar. The Eddington ratio distribution of BL Lacs and radio quasars exhibits a bimodal nature with a rough division at L bol/L Edd~0.01, which imply that they may have different accretion modes. We calculate the jet power extracted from advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), and find that it requires dimensionless angular momentum of black hole j???0.9???0.99 to reproduce the dividing line between FR I/II or BL Lac/radio quasar if dimensionless accretion rate $\dot{m}=0.01$ is adopted, which is required by the above bimodal distribution of Eddington ratios. Our results suggest that black holes in radio galaxies are rapidly spinning.  相似文献

We present a detailed investigation of X-ray source contents of eight young open clusters with ages between 4 to 46 Myr using archival X-ray data from XMM-Newton. The probable cluster memberships of the X-ray sources have been established on the basis of multi-wavelength archival data, and samples of 152 pre-main sequence (PMS) low mass (<2M ), 36 intermediate mass (2–10M ) and 16 massive (>10M ) stars have been generated. X-ray spectral analyses of high mass stars reveal the presence of high temperature plasma with temperature <2 keV, and mean L X/L bol of 10???6.9. In the case of PMS low mass stars, the plasma temperatures have been found to be in the range of 0.2 keV to 3 keV with a median value of ~1.3 keV, with no significant difference in plasma temperatures during their evolution from 4 to 46 Myr. The X-ray luminosity distributions of the PMS low mass stars have been found to be similar in the young star clusters under study. This may suggest a nearly uniform X-ray activity in the PMS low mass stars of ages ~4–14 Myr. These observed values of L X/L bol are found to have a mean value of 10??3.6±0.4, which is below the X-ray saturation level. The L X/L bol values for the PMS low mass stars are well correlated with their bolometric luminosities, that implies its dependence on the internal structure of the low mass stars. The difference between the X-ray luminosity distributions of the intermediate mass stars and the PMS low mass stars has not been found to be statistically significant. Their L X/L bol values, however have been found to be significantly different from each other with a confidence level greater than 99.999% and the strength of X-ray activity in the intermediate mass stars is found to be lower compared to the low mass stars. However, the possibility of X-ray emission from the intermediate mass stars due to a low mass star in close proximity of the intermediate mass star can not be ruled out.  相似文献

We examine the XMM X-ray spectrum of the low-ionisation nuclear emission-line region (LINER)-AGN NGC 7213, which is best fit with a power law, Kα emission lines from Fe i, Fe xxv and Fe xxvi and a soft X-ray collisionally ionised thermal plasma with kT = 0.18+0.03−0.01 keV. We find a luminosity of 7× 10−4 LEdd, and a lack of soft X-ray excess emission, suggesting a truncated accretion disc. NGC 7213 has intermediate X-ray spectral properties, between those of the weak AGN found in the LINER M 81 and higher luminosity Seyfert galaxies. This supports the notion of a continuous sequence of X-ray properties from the Galactic Centre through LINER galaxies to Seyferts, likely determined by the amount of material available for accretion in the central regions. This work is based on observations obtained with XMM-Newton, an ESA science mission with instruments and contributions directly funded by ESA Member States and the USA (NASA).  相似文献

The dependence of the spin frequency derivative \(\dot \nu \) of accreting neutron stars with a strongmagnetic field (X-ray pulsars) on the mass accretion rate (bolometric luminosity, Lbol) has been investigated for eight transient pulsars in binary systems with Be stars. Using data from the Fermi/GBM and Swift/BAT telescopes, we have shown that for seven of the eight systems the dependence \(\dot \nu \) (Lbol) can be fitted by the model of angular momentum transfer through an accretion disk, which predicts the relation \(\dot \nu \)L6/7bol. Hysteresis in the dependence \(\dot \nu \) (Lbol) has been confirmed in the system V 0332+53 and has been detected for the first time in the systems KS 1947+300, GRO J1008-57, and 1A 0535+26. Estimates for the radius of the neutron star magnetosphere in all of the investigated systems have been obtained. We show that this quantity varies from pulsar to pulsar and depends strongly on the analytical model and the estimates for the neutron star and binary system parameters.  相似文献

We present the results of a statistical study of the star formation rates (SFR) derived from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations in the ultraviolet continuum and in the Hα emission line for a sample of about 800 luminous compact galaxies (LCGs). Galaxies in this sample have a compact structure and include one or several regions of active star formation. Global galaxy characteristics (metallicity, luminosity, stellar mass) are intermediate between ones of the nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at high redshifts z>2–3. SFRs were corrected for interstellar extinction which was derived from the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra. We find that SFRs derived from the galaxy luminosities in the far ultraviolet (FUV) and near ultraviolet (NUV) ranges vary in a wide range from 0.18 M ?yr?1 to 113 M ?yr?1 with median values of 3.8 M ?yr?1 and 5.2 M ?yr?1, respectively. Simple regression relations are found for luminosities L(Hα) and L(UV) as functions of the mass of the young stellar population, the starburst age, and the galaxy metallicity. We consider the evolution of L(Hα), L(FUV) and L(NUV) with a starburst age and introduce new characteristics of star formation, namely the initial Hα, FUV and NUV luminosities at zero starburst age.  相似文献

Using γ-ray data (α γ , F γ ) detected by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and black hole mass which has been compiled from literatures for 116 Fermi blazars, we calculated intrinsic γ-ray luminosity, intrinsic bolometric luminosity, intrinsic Eddington ratio and studied the relationships between all above parameters and redshift, between α γ and L γ . Furthermore, we obtained the histograms of key parameters. Our results are the following: (1) The main reason for the evolutionary sequence of three subclasses (HBLs, LBLs, FSRQs) may be Eddington ratio rather than black hole mass; (2) FSRQs occupy in the earlier, high-luminosity, high Eddington ratio, violent phase of the galactic evolution sequence, while BL Lac objects occur in the low luminosity, low Eddington ratio, late phase of the galactic evolution sequence; (3) These results imply that the evolutionary track of Fermi blazars is FSRQs ? LBLs ? HBLs.  相似文献

We show that aperiodic and quasiperiodic variability of bright LMXBs – atoll and Z‐sources – on ∼ sec‐msec time scales is caused primarily by variations of the luminosity of the boundary layer. The emission of the accretion disk is less variable on these time scales and its power density spectrum follows P disk(f ) ∝ f –1 law, contributing to observed flux variation at low frequencies and low energies only. The kHz QPOs have the same origin as variability at lower frequencies, i.e. independent of the nature of the “clock”, the actual luminosity modulation takes place on the neutron star surface. The boundary layer spectrum remains nearly constant in the course of the luminosity variations and is represented to certain accuracy by the Fourier frequency resolved spectrum. In the investigated range of ∼ (0.1 – 1) Edd it depends weakly on the global mass accretion rate and in the limit ∼ Edd is close toWien spectrum with kT ∼ 2.4 keV. Its independence on the global value of lends support to the theoretical suggestion by Inogamov & Sunyaev (1999) that the boundary layer is radiation pressure supported. Based on the knowledge of the boundary layer spectrum we attempt to relate the motion along the Z‐track to changes of physically meaningful parameters. Our results suggest that the contribution of the boundary layer to the observed emission decreases along the Z‐track from conventional ∼50% on the horizontal branch to a rather small number on the normal branch. This decrease can be caused, for example, by obscuration of the boundary layer by the geometrically thickened accretion disk at ∼ Edd. Alternatively, this can indicate significant change of the structure of the accretion flow at ∼ Edd and disappearance of the boundary layer as a distinct region of the significant energy release associated with the neutron star surface. Narrow-Line Seyfert 1s (NLS1s) are generally considered to be ‘strange’ Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). Surprisingly, this makes them very useful for constraining models. I discuss what happens when one attempts to qualitatively fit the NLS1 phenomenon using the stellar wind model for AGN line emission [e.g., Kazanas, ApJ (1989) 74]. The simplest way of narrowing profile bases of this model to the widths observed in NLS1s is probably to lower the mass of the supermassive black hole. In a flux-limited and redshift-limited data set, this is indeed similar to increasing L/LEdd. Because the broad line region (BLR) of the stellar line emission model scales with the tidal radius of the stars, this model predicts maximal BLR velocities of FWZI∝(L/LEdd)−1/3. This implies that the black holes of NLS1s are approximately 33=27 times less massive than those in other Seyfert 1s if the stellar line emission model is correct. Another consequence of increasing L/LEdd in this model is that it results in an increase in the wind edge densities. NLS1 spectra appear to support this result as well. Even the collateral features of NLS1s, such as the line asymmetries and continuum properties, appear to be easily explained within the context of this model. For better or worse, if the stellar wind line emission is correct, NLS1s are not much stranger than other AGNs.  相似文献

The eccentric luminosity variations of quasars are still a mystery. Analytic results of this behavior ranged from multi-periodic behavior to a purely random process. Recently, we have used the non-linear time-series analysis techniques to analyze the optical light curve of 3C 273 and found that its eccentric behavior may be a low-dimensional chaos. This result induces us to seek some non-linear mechanism for the eccentric luminosity variation. In this paper, we propose a simple non-linear accretion disk model and find that under some circumstances, the chaos appears both in the disk and in the light curve. Then we compute the outburst energy ΔI, defined by the difference between the maximum luminosity and the minimum luminosity, and the mean luminosity 〈I〉 and find that when chaos appears, ΔI~〈I α M 0.5α , where M is the mass of black hole and α≈1. These results are confirmed by and/or compatible with the observational data analysis.  相似文献

We study broad line and multi-wave luminosity relations for 80 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) detected by Fermi LAT. Our results are as follows: for FSRQs, the correlations between logL γ and logL BLR, between logL X and logL BLR, between logL O and logL BLR, between logL R and logL BLR are significant; the correlation between logL IR and logL BLR (P=0.08) is not significant, but might be refereed as a “trend” of significant correlation. These results support a close link between jet formation and accretion disk, and the L γ -L BLR correlation suggests that the radiation mechanism of the γ-ray emission in FSRQs is likely to be inverse Compton scattering of seed photons from BLR or outflowing BLR.  相似文献

We examine the disc-jet connection in stellar mass and supermassive black holes by investigating the properties of their compact emission in the hard X-ray and radio bands. We compile a sample of ∼100 active galactic nuclei with measured mass, 5 GHz core emission, and 2–10 keV luminosity, together with eight galactic black holes with a total of ∼50 simultaneous observations in the radio and X-ray bands. Using this sample, we study the correlations between the radio (LR) and the X-ray (LX) luminosity and the black hole mass (M). We find that the radio luminosity is correlated with both M and LX, at a highly significant level. We show how this result can be used to extend the standard unification by orientation scheme to encompass unification by mass and accretion rate.  相似文献

Two quasars SDSS J010013.02+280225.8 and J030642.51+185315.8 with redshifts z = 6.30 and z = 5.363 were recently discovered. Their apparent magnitudes in the standard cosmological model give the luminosities of Lbol ~ 4.3 × 1014L and Lbol ~ 3.4 × 1014L. In the framework of modern concepts it is accepted that the energy release of quasars is provided by the accretion onto black holes with masses of 1.24 ± 0.19 × 1010M and 1.07 ± 0.27 × 1010M. As within the standard cosmological model the ages of these objects are about one billion years, this creates serious difficulties for the scenario of formation of such objects. Here we interpret the ultra-high luminosities of quasars as the effect of lensing of their radiation by the foreground globular clusters or dwarf galaxies.  相似文献

We present new photometric observations covering eight minima times for the eclipsing binary GSC 1042-2191. The light curves in BVRI colors were analyzed by using WD-code for the system parameters. Eight minima times were obtained from the new observations. The system is found a low mass ratio (q = 0.148), A-type over-contact binary with a fill out parameter of f = 65.01 ± 12.18%. The preliminary absolute dimensions (M1= 1.26 ± 0.06 M, M2 = 0.18 ± 0.06 M, R1 = 1.54 ± 0.20 R, R2 = 0.69 ± 0.01 R, L1 =3.30 ± 0.30 L and L2 = 0.59 ± 0.20 L) indicate the very much oversized and over-luminous secondary component, by assuming the present luminosity of the secondary is its main sequence luminosity, we predict the original mass is about 0.8 M, this means the present secondary could be transferred and/or lost 77% of its original mass and only its core is left.  相似文献

AGNs with narrow Balmer lines show various extreme properties. In particular, rapid X-ray variability, steep X-ray spectra, peculiar optical and UV line ratios, and possibly peculiar line profiles. Since all these phenomena occur together they are likely to be related to one specific underlying physical parameter. I review recent evidence, based on HST imaging of low z quasars, which suggests that the Hβ line width and continuum luminosity of quasars provide a reasonably accurate estimate of the black hole mass. This implies that narrow-line AGN have relatively low black hole masses, and thus high L/LEdd, as independently suggested based on their steep X-ray spectra. I present additional evidence suggesting that the X-ray variability and the radio loudness are primarily driven by the black hole mass. The high mass inflow rate into the core of narrow-line AGNs may produce a denser and more enriched BLR, a high column radiation pressure driven outflow, and a smaller illumination angle for the NLR, as suggested by the observed emission line properties. Narrow-line AGNs may thus provide important clues for understanding the rich overall phenomenology of AGNs.  相似文献

We investigate the formation by accretion of massive primordial protostars in the range 10 to 300 M . The high accretion rate used in the models (M = 4.4 x 10-3 M yr-1) causes the structure and evolution to differ significantly from those of both present-day protostars and primordial zero-age main sequence stars. The stellar surface is not visible throughout most of the main accretion phase, since a photosphere is formed in the in falling envelope. Significant nuclear burning does not take place until a protostellar mass of about 80 M . As the interior luminosity approaches the Eddington luminosity, the protostellar radius rapidly expands owing to the radiation pressure. Eventually, a final swelling occurs when the stellar mass reaches about 300 M . This expansion is likely to signal the end of the main accretion phase, thus setting an upper limit to the protostellar mass formed in these conditions. This revised version was published online in September 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Linear and nonlinear pulsation computations for the modelsM=0.8M ,L=10000 and 20000L were carried out in order to understand FG Sge's pulsation. The results may be summarized as follows:
  1. In the modelsL=10000L , the fundamental blue edge is nearT e =5700 K. The models show that instability of the third overtone extends to 7400 K and still has large positive growth rates. A nonlinear model of 7000 K shows a small amplitude ΔV=10 km s?1, ΔM bol=0.03 with a period of around 18 days, nearly equal to that of the third overtone.
  2. In the linear models ofL=20000L , the fundamental blue edge is shifted to 7000 K but the damping of this mode is so small that it is marginally stable to 7700 K. The third overtone has large positive growth rates of this region. The nonlinear model at 7700 K, however, shows no indication of third overtone pulsation.
We also examine the possibility, suggested by Whitney (1978), that the mass of FG Sge is 0.4M .  相似文献

We investigate the variation in coronal activity of late-type stars with age. We determine the age of the star from the colour-colour diagram (U-B vsB-V). We show that the ratio of X-ray luminosity (L x) to bolometric luminosity (L bol) is well correlated with age over several orders of magnitude variations. We find thatL x/L bol) decreases with age with a power of –1.55. This is consistant with the expected results from the studies of the variation of the corona with chromosphere and the dependence of chromosophere on age.  相似文献

A quantitative comparison of energetics of different manifestations of the activity of the UV Cet-type flare stars — sporadic flares, quiet chromospheres and coronae and stellar spots — have been carried out. On the basis of a statistical analysis of about 1800 flares registered for 23 flare stars, the energy spectra of flares have been constructed and time-averaged powers of optical radiation of flares —L flares — have been estimated. By use of spectroscopic observations of 26 flare stars between flares, the total radiation in Balmer lines of quiet chromospheres —L Bal — have been found. On the basis of these data and the soft X-ray observations of 29 flare stars, the mean of the ratiosL flares/L bol,L Bal/L bol andL X /L bol have been found to be equal to (1–2)×10?4. By use of photometric observations for 9 stars, the total starspot radiation deficits —L spots — have been estimated as (4×10?3?6×10?2L bol. Discussions of probable underestimates in the valuesL flares,L Bal,L X , andL spots leads to the conclusion that the total power of non-equilibrium processes that take place in flare star atmospheres is close to the total starspot radiation deficit in these stars.  相似文献
