The question of the association of quasars with galaxies is re-examined using 785 quasars at |b| 30, δ − 02°30′ in the new Hewitt and Burbidge Catalog (1980) and all galaxies in the “Uppsala General Catalogue of Galaxies” (Nilson, 1973). The results of the two-point cross-correlation function are presented and they show that there are on the average 0.153 ± 0.011 more galaxies within 10'.0 of a QSO than would be expected if the QSOs were distributed randomly. We find the marginal significance of the tendency for correlation between QSOs and galaxies to increase with increasing redshifts z or apparent magnitudes V. The nearest neighbor test has also been taken to analyse the same data as well as get further evidence for the apparent association between QSOs and galaxies.  相似文献

The problem of inhomogeneities in the distribution of galaxies and quasars over cosmological distances (cell structure) has been discussed in many papers. Here, in particular, we wish to draw attention to the polarimetric consequences of this structure. We discuss in detail the possibility of a large-scale rotation of the mean position angle of the observed polarization over the scale of the cellular structure. We mainly consider rotation mechanisms associated with polarized radiation from magnetized accretion disks near quasars and black holes. In that case the possible correlation of magnetic fields on cosmological scales will show up as a rotation of the mean position angle ranging from 0 to 45 degrees. Correlations in nonspherical formations of galaxies and quasars over cosmological distances also lead to rotation in the mean position angle over these distances. In principle, these two rotation mechanisms can, together, produce an arbitrary rotation of the mean position angle over distances corresponding to the inhomogeneous structure in the distribution of galaxies and quasars.  相似文献

We applied power spectral analysis to the redshift distribution of the quasars associated with low-redshift galaxies. Periodicity is confirmed at a level of confidence >99%, with a period of Δln(1+z) = 0.206. This result is exactly the same as previously found for different quasar samples. The periodicity is not caused by any selection effect in the emission lines. The two phenomena, the periodicity in the redhsift distribution and the association of quasars with low-redhsift galaxies can both be rather well explained by a multiply-connected model of the universe.  相似文献

The methods of determining the fractal dimension and irregularity scale in simulated galaxy catalogs and the application of these methods to the data of the 2dF and 6dF catalogs are analyzed. Correlation methods are shown to be correctly applicable to fractal structures only at the scale lengths from several average distances between the galaxies, and up to (10 ? 20)% of the radius of the largest sphere that fits completely inside the sample domain. Earlier the correlation methods were believed to be applicable up to the entire radius of the sphere and the researchers did not take the above restriction into account while finding the scale length corresponding to the transition to a uniform distribution. When an empirical formula is applied for approximating the radial distributions in the samples confined by the limiting apparent magnitude, the deviation of the true radial distribution from the approximating formula (but not the parameters of the best approximation) correlate with fractal dimension. An analysis of the 2dF catalog yields a fractal dimension of 2.20 ± 0.25 on scale lengths from 2 to 20 Mpc, whereas no conclusive estimates can be derived by applying the conditional density method for larger scales due to the inherent biases of the method. An analysis of the radial distributions of galaxies in the 2dF and 6dF catalogs revealed significant irregularities on scale lengths of up to 70 Mpc. The magnitudes and sizes of these irregularities are consistent with the fractal dimension estimate of D =2.1–2.4.  相似文献

We show that the strong emission lines(Mg II, C III, C IV, and Ly and the absorption lineO VI (1035 A) of quasars, when passed through the maximum transmission ofU, B, V, andR light filters, leads to a continuous, and sometimes periodic variation in the dependence ofU-B onB-V. The correlation between the(U-B) and(B-V) colors in quasars with z<1.5 is expressed by the relation(U-B)=–0.92+1.15(B-V). We also give the dependence ofU-B onB-V for Seyfert galaxies of typeS1. We determine the mean variation of the(U-B, B-V) colors due to the strongest emission lines (Mg II, C IV, Ly). It amounts to magnitude0 . m 15.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 38, No. 2, 1995.  相似文献

A statistical analysis of galaxies and the quasars forming pairs with them shows that at least a fairly large share of the quasars lie at cosmological distances and are not physical neighbors of nearby galaxies. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 41. No. 2, pp. 227–234, April-June, 1998.  相似文献

We present the first results from a major HST WFPC2 imaging study aimed at providing the first statistically meaningful comparison of the morphologies, luminosities, scalelengths and colours of the host galaxies of radio-quiet quasars, radio-loud quasars and radio galaxies. We describe the design of this study and present the images that have been obtained for the first half of our 33-source sample. We find that the hosts of all three classes of luminous AGN are massive elliptical galaxies, with scalelengths ≃10 kpc, and R − K colours consistent with mature stellar populations. Most importantly, this is first unambiguous evidence that, just like radio-loud quasars, essentially all radio-quiet quasars brighter than M R =−24 reside in massive ellipticals. This result removes the possibility that radio 'loudness' is directly linked to host galaxy morphology, but is however in excellent accord with the black hole/spheroid mass correlation recently highlighted by Magorrian et al. We apply the relations given by Magorrian et al. to infer the expected Eddington luminosity of the putative black hole at the centre of each of the spheroidal host galaxies we have uncovered. Comparison with the actual nuclear R -band luminosities suggests that the black holes in most of these galaxies are radiating at a few per cent of the Eddington luminosity; the brightest host galaxies in our low- z sample are capable of hosting quasars with M R ≃− 28, comparable to the most luminous quasars at z ≃3. Finally, we discuss our host-derived black hole masses in the context of the radio luminosity:black hole mass correlation recently uncovered for nearby galaxies by Franceschini et al., and consider the resulting implications for the physical origin of radio loudness.  相似文献

We present the results of a deep K -band imaging study which reveals the host galaxies around a sample of luminous radio-quiet quasars. The K -band images, obtained at UKIRT, are of sufficient quality to allow accurate modelling of the underlying host galaxy. Initially, the basic structure of the hosts is revealed using a modified clean deconvolution routine optimized for this analysis. Two of the 14 quasars are shown to have host galaxies with violently disturbed morphologies which cannot be modelled by smooth elliptical profiles. For the remainder of our sample, 2D models of the host and nuclear component are fitted to the images using the χ 2 statistic to determine goodness of fit. Host galaxies are detected around all of the quasars. The reliability of the modelling is extensively tested, and we find the host luminosity to be well constrained for nine quasars. The derived average K -band absolute K -corrected host galaxy magnitude for these luminous radio-quiet quasars is 〈 M K 〉=25.15±0.04, slightly more luminous than an L * galaxy. The spread of derived host galaxy luminosities is small, although the spread of nuclear-to-host ratios is not. These host luminosities are shown to be comparable to those derived from samples of quasars of lower total luminosity, and we conclude that there is no correlation between host and nuclear luminosity for these quasars. Nuclear-to-host ratios break the lower limit previously suggested from studies of lower nuclear luminosity quasars and Seyfert galaxies. Morphologies are less certain but, on the scales probed by these images, some hosts appear to be dominated by spheroids while others appear to have disc-dominated profiles.  相似文献

We incorporate a simple scheme for the growth of supermassive black holes into semi-analytic models that follow the formation and evolution of galaxies in a cold dark matter-dominated Universe. We assume that supermassive black holes are formed and fuelled during major mergers. If two galaxies of comparable mass merge, their central black holes coalesce and a few per cent of the gas in the merger remnant is accreted by the new black hole over a time-scale of a few times 107 yr. With these simple assumptions, our model not only fits many aspects of the observed evolution of galaxies, but also reproduces quantitatively the observed relation between bulge luminosity and black hole mass in nearby galaxies, the strong evolution of the quasar population with redshift, and the relation between the luminosities of nearby quasars and those of their host galaxies. The strong decline in the number density of quasars from z ∼2 to z =0 is a result of the combination of three effects: (i) a decrease in the merging rate; (ii) a decrease in the amount of cold gas available to fuel black holes, and (iii) an increase in the time-scale for gas accretion. The predicted decline in the total content of cold gas in galaxies is consistent with that inferred from observations of damped Ly α systems. Our results strongly suggest that the evolution of supermassive black holes, quasars and starburst galaxies is inextricably linked to the hierarchical build-up of galaxies.  相似文献

The results of a comprehensive analysis of continuous radio spectra of a sample of Gigahertz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources are reported. The sources are selected from a flux-density-complete sample (S ν ≥ 200 mJy at 4.8 or 5 GHz) using multifrequency measurements of the RATAN-600 radio telescope and data from the CATS astrophysical catalogs support system. The analysis revealed a very small number (1–2%) of “classical” GPS objects, which is significantly less than the expected fraction of 10%. GPS galaxies are found to have narrower and steeper radio spectra than quasars. The low-frequency part of the spectrum is seen to become steeper with increasing redshift. Galaxies and quasars at the same z have comparable angular sizes, whereas their luminosities may differ by one order of magnitude. At large redshifts there is a deficit of objects with low (several GHZ) peak frequencies. The number of GPS galaxies decreases sharply with redshift, and most of them are found at z between 0.01 and 1.81. GPS quasars are found at large redshifts, from 0.11 to 3.99. A quarter of the sample consists of blazars whose spectra may temporarily have a convex shape when the object is in active state.  相似文献

In the first part of the paper the known results on the gravitational interaction of a massive black hole with the surrounding stars in a galactic nucleus are discussed. The tidal disruption of stars in close encounters with a black hole is reviewed. Expressions for the flux of stars on a black hole are given, taking into account energy and angular momentum diffusion of stellar orbits. The scenario of star disruption and accretion of the released stellar matter is depicted. The growth of a black hole in a typical galactic nucleus on account of gas accretion from disrupted stars is discussed. A comparison with the upper limit to the luminosity of the nucleus of our Galaxy puts rather severe constraints on the mass of a hypothetical black hole at the galactic centre. Possible mechanisms preventing the formation and growth of black holes in normal galactic nuclei are discussed. The second part of the paper (Section 8) deals with the hypothesis that massive black holes are the primary energy sources in active galaxies and quasars. The luminosity requirements of bright quasars and weak Seyferts can probably be accounted for in such a model, but there are difficulties in explaining the intermediate range. Mass ejection from Seyferts and quasars is not a severe problem. The same applies to the spectrum. A much more serious objection is the observed periodic and quasi-periodic variability. Another unsatisfactory feature of this hypothesis is that one needs two different evolutionary tracks for quasars and active galaxies, and for normal galaxies.  相似文献

The recently discovered apparent dramatic expansion in the effective radii of massive elliptical galaxies from   z ≃ 2  to ≃0.1 has been interpreted in terms of either galaxy mergers or the rapid loss of cold gas due to active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback. In examining the latter case, we have quantified the extent of the expansion, which is uncertain observationally, in terms of the star formation parameters and time of the expulsion of the cold gas. In either case, the large global decrease in stellar density should translate into a major drop in the interstellar medium density and pressure with cosmic epoch. These cosmological changes are expected to have a major influence on the gas accretion mode, which will shift from 'cold' thin disc accretion at high redshifts towards 'hot' Bondi fed Advection Dominated Accretion Flow (ADAF) accretion at low redshifts. The decline of angular momentum inflow would then lead to a spin down of the black hole, for which we have calculated more precise time-scales; a value of about 0.2 Gyr is typical for a  109 M  central black hole. These results have implications for the different cosmological evolutionary patterns found for the luminosity functions of powerful and weak radio galaxies.  相似文献

The central energy source of quasars and active galactic nuclei cannot be resolved by observation. When such a compact source is affected by gravitational micro-lensing (lensing of stars in a distant galaxy), brightness changes of the order of magnitudes may occur. Since it is an eclipse-like effect, it gives the possibility of calculating the one-dimensional source profile from the lightcurve. We present the method and the results of its application on simulated lightcurves. It should be possible to obtain information on the structure of the source on a scale smaller than 10–3 pc. The micro gravitational lens effect gives, therefore, the only known possibility of observing directly the central energy source of quasars and active galactic nuclei.Paper presented at the 11th European Regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.  相似文献

The relevance of the galactic reddeningsE(B-V) derived by Teerikorpi (1978, 1981) from ScI galaxies and quasars, is further confirmed by considerations of close pairs in the sky, the Lick counts, and the counts/NHi ratio. The compact dust clouds suggested by Teerikorpi (1981) could not be detected directly by the counts. However, the counts/NHi ratio showed a behaviour expected if the reddenings really describe the division of the dust in the Local Spiral into compact clouds and a more diffuse medium, in the way suggested in the previous study.  相似文献
