A huge filament eruption of 12 September 2000 associated with a two-ribbon spotless flare is described. During the acceleration phase the shape of the filament changed, and signatures of topological restructuring of large-scale coronal magnetic fields were inferred by tracking changes of nearby coronal holes. At the same time electron beams associated with the flare impulsive phase escaped into interplanetary space. Based on the time–spatial relationships a hypothesis is put forward, according to which the reconnection between the arcade magnetic field and the ambient field provides a temporary link between the open field lines and the flare energy release site, enabling the escape of electron beams into interplanetary space.  相似文献

Every two-ribbon flare observed during the Skylab period produced an observable coronal transient, provided the flare occurred close enough to the limb. The model presented here treats these two events as a combined process. Transients that occur without flares are believed to involve magnetic fields that are too weak to produce significant chromospheric emission. Adopting the hypothesis that the rising flare loop systems observed during two-ribbon flares are exhibiting magnetic reconnection, a model of a coronal transient is proposed which incorporates this reconnection process as the driving force. When two oppositely directed field lines reconnect a lower loop is created rooted to the solar surface (the flare loop) and an upper disconnected loop is produced which is free to rise. The magnetic flux of these upper loops is proposed as the driver for the transient. The force is produced by the increase in magnetic pressure under the filament and transient.A quantitative model is developed which treats the transient configuration in terms of four distinct parts- the transient itself with its magnetic field and material, the region just below the transient but above the filament, the filament with its magnetic field, and the reconnected flux beneath the filament. Two cases are considered - one in which all the prominence material rises with the transient and one in which the material is allowed to fall out of the transient. The rate of rise of the neutral line during the reconnection process is taken from the observations of the rising X-ray flare loop system during the 29 July, 1973 flare. The MHD equations for the system are reduced to four non-linear ordinary coupled differential equations which are solved using parameters believed to be realistic for solar conditions. The calculated velocity profiles, widths, etc., agree quite well with the observed properties of coronal transients as seen in white light. Since major flares are usually associated with a filament eruption about 10–15 min before the flare and since this model associates the transient with the filament eruption, we suspect that the transient is actually initiated some time before the actual flare itself. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

From observations of two-ribbon solar flares, we present a new line of evidence that magnetic reconnection is of key importance in magnetospheric substorms. We infer that in substorms reconnection of closed field lines in the near-Earth thinned plasma sheet both initiates and is driven by the overall MHD instability that drives the tailward expulsion of the reconnected closed field (0 loops). The general basis for this inference is the longstanding notion that two-ribbon flares and substorms are essentially similar phenomena, driven by similar processes. We give an array of observed similarities that substantiate this view. More specifically, our inference for substorms is drawn from observations of filament eruptions in two-ribbon flares, from which we conclude that the heart of the overall instability consists of reconnection and eruption of the closed magnetic field in and around the filament. We propose that essentially the same overall instability operates in substorms. Our point is not that the magnetic field configuration or the microphysics in substorms is identical to that in two-ribbon flares, but that the overall instability results from essentially the same combination of reconnection and eruption of closed magnetic field.  相似文献

The preflare activity of a plage filament is analysed from H observations made with the Multichannel Subtractive Double Pass Spectrograph (MSDP) of the Meudon Solar Tower. The June 22, 1980 event is studied and interpreted in terms of preflare heating of a filament, connected to the rise of emerging flux, and the relative approach of pores of different magnetic polarity, prior to the onset of a two-ribbon flare. The region with enhanced magnetic field, around the filament, begins to brighten slowly 20 min before the triggering of the flare, in the center of H. Filament dark material begins to rise rapidly while the brightest point on one side drifts towards it, 6 min before the onset of the two-ribbon flare. Simultaneously the absorbing material separates from the remaining part of the filament. In the discussion, we suggest that most of the observed features may be the consequence of emergence of new magnetic flux and the related reconnection processes.  相似文献

A major two-ribbon X17 flare occurred on 28 October 2003, starting at 11:01 UT in active region NOAA 10486. This flare was accompanied by the eruption of a filament and by one of the fastest halo coronal mass ejections registered during the October–November 2003 strong activity period. We focus on the analysis of magnetic field (SOHO/MDI), chromospheric (NainiTal observatory and TRACE), and coronal (TRACE) data obtained before and during the 28 October event. By combining our data analysis with a model of the coronal magnetic field, we concentrate on the study of two events starting before the main flare. One of these events, evident in TRACE images around one hour prior to the main flare, involves a localized magnetic reconnection process associated with the presence of a coronal magnetic null point. This event extends as long as the major flare and we conclude that it is independent from it. A second event, visible in Hα and TRACE images, simultaneous with the previous one, involves a large-scale quadrupolar reconnection process that contributes to decrease the magnetic field tension in the overlaying field configuration; this allows the filament to erupt in a way similar to that proposed by the breakout model, but with magnetic reconnection occurring at Quasi-Separatrix Layers (QSLs) rather than at a magnetic null point. With the assumption that the magnetic field lines are radial at some quite high level in the solar corona, a non-constant shearing magnetic field is introduced into the magnetohydrostatic equations. It is found that a same critical amount of shearing a magnetic island is formed and then breaks out to form an open magnetic configuration in which resistive tearing-mode instability may occur, and may initiate a two-ribbon flare. In addition, high shearing magnetic fields are investigated. It is shown that high shearing magnetic configurations are weak two-dimensional neutral sheets, the instability of which has been studied by Janicke (1982).  相似文献

By means of Hα, EUV, soft X-ray, hard X-ray, and photospheric magnetic field observations, we report the surge-like eruption of a small-scale filament, called “blowout surge” according to recent observations, occurring on a plage region around AR 10876 on 1 May 2006. Along magnetic polarity reversal boundaries with obvious magnetic cancelations, the filament was located underneath a compact coronal arcade and close to one end of large coronal loops around the AR’s periphery. The filament started to erupt about 8 min before the main impulsive phase of a small two-ribbon flare, which had two Hα blue-wing kernels connected by hard X-ray loop-top sources on the both sides of the filament. After the flare end, the filament further underwent a distant eruption following a path nearly along the preexisting large loops, and thus looked like an Hα surge and an EUV jet. During the eruption, a small coronal dimming was formed near the flare, while weak brightenings appeared around the remote end of the large loops. We interpret these joint observations as the filament eruption being confined and guided by the large loops. The filament eruption, initially embedded in one footpoint region of the large loops, can break away from the magnetic restraint of the overlying compact arcade, but might be still limited inside the large loops. As a result, the eruption took a surge form that can only expand laterally along the large loops rather than erupt radially.

In this paper, the observational data in H, radio, soft X-ray, hard X-ray, and -ray emissions for the 3B/X3.0 solar flare on 4 February, 1986 are collected. This flare is studied in detail by using the flare-filament current model. The momentum equations and the energy equations of the filament current have been solved. The influence of the highly sheared background magnetic field on the motion of the filaments is studied through numerical calculation. The results show that the resistive tearing instability is a possible pre-heating mechanism in the preflare phase, and both the rotation of the spiral sunspots and the highly sheared background field are necessary for the energy storage of this flare. The high-energy data of the flare imply that the current-loop coalescence instability is a possible eruptive mechanism.  相似文献

We will present detailed observations of the asymmetrical eruption of a large quiescent filament on 24 November 2002, which was followed by a two-ribbon flare, three coronal dimmings, endpoint brightenings, and a very fast halo-type coronal mass ejection (CME). Before the eruption, the filament lay along the main neutral line (MNL) underneath a single-arcade helmet streamer with a simple bipolar configuration. However, photospheric magnetic fields on both sides of the filament showed an asymmetrical distribution, and the filament and MNL were not located just at the center of the streamer base but were closer to the eastern leg of the streamer arcade. Therefore, instead of erupting along the streamer’s symmetrical axis, the filament showed a nonradial and asymmetrical eruption. It lifted from the eastern flank of the streamer arcade to impact the western leg directly, leading to an asymmetrical CME that expanded westward; eventually the streamer was disrupted significantly. Accordingly, the opposite-polarity coronal dimmings at both sides of the filament forming in the eruption also showed an asymmetrical area distribution. We thus assume that the streamer arcade could guide the filament at the early eruption phase but failed to restrain it later. Consistent with previous results, these observations suggest that the global background magnetic field can impose additional action on the initial eruption of the filament and CME, as well as the dimming configuration.  相似文献

The MHD stability of force-free, cylindrical arcades is investigated, including the stabilising effect of photospheric line tying. It is found that a wide variety of fields are stable. This suggests that either a departure from a force free equilibrium or suppression of line tying is necessary if a two-ribbon flare is to be triggered. It is postulated that in both circumstances, the existence of an active region filament is an essential preflare requirement for a two-ribbon flare.  相似文献

The paper is a contribution to the study of two-ribbon flares. A variety of observational material, i.e. Hα pictures, radio spectrum in the frequency band of 150–1000 MHz, radio map at 6 cm, fluxes at other frequencies, magnetograms and X-ray flux in a broad energy interval, enabled us to study the development of the 16 May, 1981 flare. The onset of the flare could be described by the model of Van Tend and Kuperus. A diminishing of the magnetic shear during the activation of the filament was observed. From radio and X-ray data it was found that pulsed acceleration took place in the region under the rising filament, the electrons propagating in a limited region both upwards to greater heights and downwards into the footpoints. Internal oscillations of the filament were observed. A manifestation of the primary process of interplanetary shock-wave generation was found. The 6 cm radio sources could be localized in the footpoints of magnetic loops.  相似文献

1 INTRODUCTIONCoronal majss ejections (CMEs) are often seen as spectacular eruptions of matter fromthe Sun which propagate outward through the heliosphere and often interact with the Earth'smagnetosphere (Hundhausen, 1997; Gosling, 1997; and references herein). It is well known thatthese interactions can have substalltial consequences on the geomagnetic environment of theEarth, sometimes resulting in damage to satellites (e.g., McAllister et al., 1996; Berdichevskyet al., 1998). Optical observationd now present considerable information on the flare process. It is always associated with filaments and with simplification of existing magnetic connections, and it arises from the emergence and expansion of new flux. The optical flare divides into impulsive phase, with multiple flashes along the neutral line, and thermal phase, with two-ribbon expansion. The former bears some resemblance to tearing mode phenomena. The appearance of loops in emission requires very high densities in those phenomena. The ratios of the hydrogen lines, the excitation of HeII 4686, and the relation of vertical to horizontal structure all remain to be explained.  相似文献

The 180-degree ambiguity in magnetic field direction along polarity reversal boundaries can be resolved often and reliably by the chiral method. The chiral method requires (1) identification of the chirality of at least one solar feature related to a polarity reversal boundary along which the field direction is sought and (2) knowledge of the polarity of the network magnetic field on at least one side of the polarity reversal boundary. In the context of the Sun, chirality is an observable signature of the handedness of the magnetic field of a solar feature. We concentrate on how to determine magnetic field direction from chirality definitions and illustrate the technique in eight examples. The examples cover the spectrum of polarity boundaries associated with filament channels and filaments ranging from those connected with active regions to those on the quiet Sun. The applicability of the chiral method to all categories of filaments supports the view that active region filaments and quiescent filaments are the extreme ends in a continuous spectrum of filaments. The chiral method is almost universally applicable because many types of solar features that reveal chirality are now readily seen in solar images accessible over the World Wide Web; also there are clear differences between left-handed and right-handed solar structures that can be identified in both high- and low-resolution data although high-resolution images are almost always preferable. In addition to filaments and filament channels, chirality is identifiable in coronal loop systems, flare loop systems, sigmoids, some sunspots, and some erupting prominences. Features other than filament channels and filaments can be used to resolve the 180-degree ambiguity because there is a one-to-one relationship between the chiralities of all features associated with a given polarity reversal boundary. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of an eruption event that occurred in active region NOAA 11093 on 7 August 2010, using data obtained from SDO, STEREO, RHESSI, and the GONG Hα network telescope. From these observations, we inferred that an upward slow rising motion of an inverse S-shaped filament lying along the polarity inversion line resulted in a CME subsequent to a two-ribbon flare. Interaction of overlying field lines across the filament with the side-lobe field lines, associated EUV brightening, and flux emergence/cancelation around the filament were the observational signatures of the processes leading to its destabilization and the onset of eruption. Moreover, the time profile of the rising motion of the filament/flux rope corresponded well with flare characteristics, viz., the reconnection rate and hard X-ray emission profiles. The flux rope was accelerated to the maximum velocity as a CME at the peak phase of the flare, followed by deceleration to an average velocity of 590 km s−1. We suggest that the observed emergence/cancelation of magnetic fluxes near the filament caused it to rise, resulting in the tethers to cut and reconnection to take place beneath the filament; in agreement with the tether-cutting model. The corresponding increase/decrease in positive/negative photospheric fluxes found in the post-peak phase of the eruption provides unambiguous evidence of reconnection as a consequence of tether cutting.  相似文献

Adopting the point of view that a coronal transient is a defined magnetic structure, it must be diamagnetic with respect to the external ambient magnetic field, i.e., the external field lines cannot penetrate the structure. If this is so, an integral approach involving only external forces can be very useful for studying the conditions for acceleration and large-scale dynamical behavior of the transient. After a discussion of a suggested transient configuration based upon observations of prominences, flare loops, and transient - filament relative orientations observed by Trottet and MacQueen (1980), we demonstrate the diamagnetic approach to this problem through a particularly simplified model. Necessary conditions for upward acceleration of the transient are discussed in some detail. One such plausible initiation mechanism is shown to be a constriction of the structure near its base by the external forces. This mechanism not only can provide the upward acceleration for the transient but is also compatible with the observation of hot rising flare loops during two-ribbon flare which show evidence for magnetic reconnection. We have studied the equilibrium conditions and dynamical behavior of the transient using this mechanism for two limiting cases - that in which the gas pressure in the structure dominates over the magnetic pressure and that in which the magnetic pressure dominates. For both cases, the required equilibrium conditions are compatible with observed coronal parameters. The dynamical behavior upon inward constriction, however, resembles the observed characteristics for transients best for the magnetically dominated case. For example, in the pressure-dominated case, the required temperatures for acceleration appear somewhat high being in excess of about 1.9 × 106 K. If, in addition, the internal temperature declines adiabatically during the outward motion, the structure does not reach inifinity unless its initial temperature exceeds about 3 × 106 K but stops a some radial distance, returns to the Sun only to be accelerated outward again in the same fashion. The rather stringent requirements on internal temperature for the pressure-dominated case in addition to the expectation that pressure-dominated transients should evolve into a thin pencil shape instead of maintaining an approximately self-similar profile as observed are strong arguments in favor of the magnetically dominated case.Based upon the above results, we suggest that the reconnection process evidenced in two-ribbon flares may not necessarily be the result of the relaxation of a locally open field configuration produced by the transient as described by Kopp and Pneuman (1976) but, instead, that the acceleration of the transient and the two-ribbon flare both may be produced by a common force, namely that provided by the constricting effect of the external magnetic field displaced by the presence of the structure. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The formation and eruption of active region filaments is supposed to be caused by the increase of a concentrated current embedded in the active region background magnetic field of an active region according to the theory of Van Tend and Kuperus (1978).The onset of a filament eruption is due to either changes in the background magnetic field or the increase of the filament current intensity. Both processes can be caused by the emergence of new magnetic flux as well as by the motion of the photospheric footpoints of the magnetic field lines. It is shown that if the background field evolves from a potential field to a nearly force-free field the vertical equilibrium of the current filament is not affected, but large forces are generated along the filament axis. This is identified as the cause of filament activation and the increase in filament turbulence during the flare build-up phase. Depending on the evolution of the background field and the current filament, two different scenarios for flare build-up and filament eruption are distinguished. This work was done while one of the authors (M.K.) was participating in the CECAM workshop on Physics of Solar Flares held at Orsay, France, in June 1979.  相似文献
