In the mid-latitude E-region, the wind-shear mechanism produces thin ionized layers at levels where the vertical ion velocity is zero. We show that such layers conduct electric current only towards the magnetic equator, and not in the zonal direction. We surmise that this property may influence the electric field distribution in the nocturnal ionosphere, and possibly also the coupling between ion drifts and neutral air winds in the F-region. Detailed case studies of nocturnal layers located near the peak of ion Pedersen conductivity (around 130km) are needed to test this idea.  相似文献

The discrepancy between the overhead E-region current and the magnetic D-component is studied using data obtained by the Chatanika incoherent scatter radar (L = 5.6). The F-region horizontal current is estimated to be too small to cause the observed D-deflection. Also, the assumption that the magnetic effects of the Pedersen and field-aligned currents cancel each other on the ground is shown to be inadequate to solve the problem. The significance of the inclination angle in the data analysis and the importance of the field-aligned current sheets are discussed.  相似文献

Recent work has been concerned with calculating the three-dimensional ion concentrations and Pedersen and Hall conductivities within the auroral region of Jupiter for varying conditions of incident electron precipitation. Using the jovian ionospheric model, we present results that show the auroral ionospheric response to changing the incoming flux of precipitating electrons (for constant initial energy) and also the response to changing the initial energy (for both constant flux and constant energy flux). The results show that, for expected energy fluxes of precipitating particles, the average auroral integrated Pedersen conductivity attains values in excess of 1 mho. In addition, it is shown that electrons with an initial energy of around 60 keV are particularly effective at generating auroral conductivity: Particles of this energy penetrate most effectively to the layer of the jovian ionosphere at which the auroral conductivity is at a maximum.  相似文献

Two kinetic models for the auroral topside ionosphere are compared. The collisionless plasma distributed along an auroral magnetic field line behaves like a non-Ohmic conducting medium with highly non-linear characteristic curves relating the parallel current density to the potential difference between the cold ionosphere and the hot plasmasheet region. The (zero-electric current) potential difference, required to balance the current carried by the precipitating plasmasheet particles and the current transported by the outflowing ionospheric particles, depends on the ratio nps.e/nth.e and Tps.e/Tth.e of the plasmasheet and ionospheric electron densities and temperatures. When in the E-region the magnetic field lines are interconnected by a high conductivity plasma the resulting field-aligned currents driven by the magnetospheric potential distribution are limited by the integrated Pedersen conductivity of the ionospheric layers. These currents are not related to the parallel electric field intensity as they would be in Ohmic materials. The parallel electric field intensity is necessarily determined by the local quasi-neutrality of the plasma.  相似文献

The geomagnetic daily variations at the Nigerian dip equator have been analyzed with the methodology introduced in a previous paper. It has been found that the height integrated current presents a notoriously higher amplification in Nigeria than in Peru. It has also been found that there exists a strong and inhomogeneous anomaly in the Earth's conductivity in Nigeria. And contrary to what is usually accepted, it is shown that its latitudinal distribution can not be precisely determined until the distribution and magnitude of the ionospheric currents at F-region heights is more accurately known.  相似文献

An axisymmetric model for approximate solution of the magnetospheric Alfvén wave problem at latitudes above the plasmapause is proposed, in which a realistic dipole geometry is combined with finite anisotropic ionosphere conductivities, thus bringing together various ideas of previous authors. It is confirmed that the axisymmetric toroidal and poloidal modes interact via the ionospheric Hall effect, and an approximate method of solution is suggested using previously derived closed solutions of the uncoupled wave equations.A solution for zero Hall conductivity is obtained, which consists of sets of independent shell oscillations, regardless of the magnitude of the Pedersen conductivity. One set reduces to the classical solutions for infinite Pedersen conductivity, while another predicts a new set of harmonics of a quarter-wave fundamental, with longer eigenperiods than the classical solutions for a given L-shell.  相似文献

We present estimates of the day-side ionospheric conductivities at Mars based on magnetic field measurements by Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) at altitudes down to ∼100 km during aerobraking orbits early in the mission. At Mars, the so-called ionospheric dynamo region, where plasma/neutral collisions permit electric currents perpendicular to the magnetic field, lies between 100 and 250 km altitude. We find that the ionosphere is highly conductive in this region, as expected, with peak Pedersen and Hall conductivities of 0.1-1.5 S/m depending on the solar illumination and induced magnetospheric conditions. Furthermore, we find a consistent double peak pattern in the altitude profile of the day-side Pedersen conductivity, similar to that on Titan found by Rosenqvist et al. (2009). A high altitude peak, located between 180 and 200 km, is equivalent to the terrestrial peak in the lower F-layer. A second and typically much stronger layer of Pedersen conductivity is observed between 120 and 130 km, which is below the Hall conductivity peak at about 130-140 km. In this altitude region, MGS finds a sharp decrease in induced magnetic field strength at the inner magnetospheric boundary, while the day-side electron density is known to remain high as far down as 100 km. We find that such Titan-like behaviour of the Pedersen conductivity is only observed under regions of strongly draped magnetospheric field-lines, and negligible crustal magnetic anomalies below the spacecraft. Above regions of strong crustal magnetic anomalies, the Pedersen conductivity profile becomes more Earth-like with one strong Pedersen peak above the Hall conductivity peak. Here, both conductivities are 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than the above only weakly magnetised crustal regions, depending on the strength of the crustal anomaly field at ionospheric altitudes. This nature of the Pedersen conductivity together with the structured distribution of crustal anomalies all over the planet should give rise to strong conductivity gradients around such anomalies. Day-side ionospheric conductivities on Mars (in regions away from the crustal magnetic anomalies) and Titan seem to behave in a very similar manner when horizontally draped magnetic field-lines partially magnetise a sunlit ionosphere. Therefore, it appears that a similar double peak structure of strong Pedersen conductivity could be a more general feature of non-magnetised bodies with ionised upper atmospheres, and thus should be expected to occur also at other non-magnetised terrestrial planets like Venus or other planetary bodies within the host planet magnetospheres.  相似文献

A survey of metallic ions detected by the Bennett Ion Mass Spectrometers flown on the Atmosphere Explorer satellites, including both circular and eccentric orbital configurations, shows that patches of these ions of meteoric origin are frequently present during magnetically active periods on the bottomside of the F-layer at middle and high latitudes. In particular the F-region metals statistically tend to appear at night in the vicinity of the main ionospheric trough (in a band of invariant latitudes approx. 10 degrees wide) and on the day side of the polar cap. These distributions were previously associated with the expected dynamics of ions in the F-region above 140 km where meridional neutral wind drag and convection electric fields are the dominant ion transport mechanisms. However, the main meteor deposition layer—the presumed source region of the metals—is located below 100 km where these transport mechanisms do not prevail. It is demonstrated that the Pedersen ion drifts driven by intense electric fields such as those associated with sub-auroral ion drifts (SAID) are sufficient to transport the long-lived metallic ions upward from the main meteor layer to altitudes where the drag of equatorial directed neutral winds and electric field convection can support them against the downward pull of gravity and transport them to other locations. The spatial and temporal distribution of the middle and high latitude F-region metals are consistent with the known characteristics of the electric fields and with the expected F-region ion dynamics.  相似文献

A model is developed to represent a toroidal mode of Pc5 geomagnetic pulsations. It is shown that this model is consistent in its predictions, such as the latitude profiles of amplitude and phase and their dependence on the height integrated Pedersen conductivity, Σp, with those of Walker's (1980) theory. It is also shown that this theory is relatively easily capable of accommodating (i) a variety of field line plasma mass density distributions, (ii) a variety of external excitation schemes, (iii) unequal Σp's at each end of the field lines and (iv) non-dipolar geomagnetic fields. The theory yields the transient as well as the steady state response, an important feature permitting application to short-lived events or to those for which the generator is amplitude modulated. It is shown, for instance, that the amplitude-latitude profile varies during the transient. It is also shown that the steady state latitude profiles of amplitude and phase are the dual of those observed as a function of frequency when the excitation frequency is scanned through a resonance. A more realistic steady state energy flow from a generator along the field lines to the ionosphere is inherent in this theory compared with that from the mode to the ionosphere which is inherent in Walker's theory.  相似文献

Enhancement of conductivity tensor modification within the ionospheric plasma by electron density modulation through the temperature dependence of the recombination rates of different ionspecies caused due to electron temperature modulation during high-power wave propagation is studied. Variation of Hall and Pedersen conductivities of the ionosphere has been investigated in the height range between 85 km to 250 km. The generation of waves at the modulation frequency and its harmonics in the ELF, VLF bands in the process is discussed.  相似文献

The data from observations of the geomagnetic field, ionospheric parameters and atmospheric emissions, carried out at four midlatitude station in Bulgaria are analysed. The observations refer to the geomagnetic disturbance on 28/30 October 1973 (Kpmax = 7) and also to a very quiet period before it. It is shown that all four geomagnetic substorms during the night of 29/30 October influenced the midlatitude F-region. This is indicated by a lowering of the height of the F-region by ca. 50–70 km. Owing to this downward drift of ionisation the dissociative recombination and the intensity of the red line is accordingly increased. As an explanation of this phenomenon we suggest the action of the electric fields, which can at the same time be transported from the magnetosphere to the ionosphere.  相似文献

Recent progress in modeling ionospheric current systems requires global conductivity models which can reflect substorm conditions on an instantaneous basis. For this purpose, empirical relations of the North-South component (ΔH) of the magnetic disturbance field observed at College with the Pedersen (Σp) and Hall (ΣH) conductivities deduced from the Chatanika radar data and their ratio (ΣHΣp) are examined. These empirical formulas allow us to construct approximate distribution patterns of Σp and Σ>H over the entire polar region on the basis of the distribution of ΔH at given instants by devising an appropriate weighting function for both the polar cap and the subauroral region. The global conductivity distributions thus obtained are compared with those employed by Kamide et al. (1981) and Spiro et al. (1982). The comparisons show that the gross features are similar among them. In addition, we also examine the relationship of ΔH with the North-South component of the electric field with the particle energy injection rate (uA) estimated from the Chatanika radar data. Based on the empirical relation between ΣH and uA the global distribution of the latter over the entire polar region at particular instants can also be obtained.  相似文献

Knowledge of the structure of the polar ionosphere during exceptionally quiet periods is basic for studying complicated ionospheric behaviors during disturbances. On the basis of data from an airborne ionosonde as well as a meridian chain of ground-basedionosondes, the circumpolar structure of the E,-and F-regions is elucidated. There are two circumpolar zones of E-region ionization with differing characteristics. The first is an auroral E,-layer and/or retarded type sporadic E-band that has previously (Whalen et al., 1971) been found to be identical with the continuous aurora. The second is a zone of non-retarded type spora die E located poleward of the former band. In general, discrete auroras are co-located with the latter. The main trough, a prominent feature of the night sector F-region, is most pronounced in the early morning. The main trough is bounded on the poleward side by a well defined ‘wall’ of F-region ionization. The night sector poleward trough wall is located approximately three degrees of latitude equatorward of the auroral oval. A ‘plateau’ of F-region ionization extends from the poleward trough wall to the auroral oval.  相似文献

Electric currents, generated by thermospheric winds, flow along the geomagnetic field lines linking the E-and F-regions. Their effects on the electric field distribution are investigated by solving the electrical and dynamical equations. The input data include appropriate models of the F-region tidal winds, the thermospheric pressure distribution and the E-and F-layer concentrations. At the magnetic equator, the calculated neutral air wind at 240 km height has a prevailling eastward component of 55 m sec-1 and the west-east and vertical ion drifts agree in their general form with incoherent scatter data from Jicamarca  相似文献

High resolution electric field and particle data, obtained by the S23L1 rocket crossing over a discrete prebreakup arc in January 1979, are studied in coordination with ground observations (Scandinavian Magnetometer Array—SMA, TV and all-sky cameras) in order to clarify the electrodynamics of the arc and its surroundings. Height-integrated conductivities have been calculated from the particle data, including the ionization effects of precipitating protons and assuming a steady state balance between ion production and recombination losses. High resolution optical information of arc location relative to the rocket permitted a check of the validity of this assumption for each flux tube passed by the rocket. Another check was provided by a comparison between calculated (equilibrium values) and observed electron densities along the rocket trajectory. A way to compensate for the finite precipitation time when calculating the electron densities is outlined. The height-integrated HalI-Pedersen conductivity ratio is typically 1.4 within the arc and about 1 at the arc edges, indicative of a relatively softer energy spectrum there. The height-integrated conductivities combined with the DC electric field measurements permitted calculation of the horizontal ionospheric current vectors (J), Birkeland currents (from div J) and energy dissipation through Joule heating (ΣpE2). An eastward current of typically 1 A m?1 was found to be concentrated mainly to the arc region and equatorward of it. A comparison has been made with the equivalent current system deduced from ground based magnetometer data (SMA) showing a generally good agreement with the rocket results. An intense Pedersen current peak (1.2 A m?1) was found at the southern arc edge. This edge constituted a division line between a very intense (> 10 μA m?1) and localized (~ 6 km) downward current sheet to the south, probably carried by upward flowing cold ionospheric electrons and a more extended upward current sheet (> 10 μA m?2) over the arc carried by measured precipitating electrons. Joule and particle heating across the arc were anticorrelated, consistent with the findings of Evans et al. (1977) with a total value of about 100mW m?2.  相似文献

The ionization structure of the auroral arc was measured on a sounding rocket which penetrated into a bright auroral arc. The E-region electron density becomes large (2 ~ 5 × 105 el/cm3 only in the moving auroral arc, whose N2+ 4278 Å brightness is 1 ~ 2·5 kR. The electron density in the D-region beneath the lower boundary of the arc (75 ~ 98 km in altitude) is also considerably enhanced to 2 ~ 5 × 104 el/cm3.The observed E-region electron density can be interpreted theoretically as due to the direct ionization by precipitating electrons, whose energy spectrum is approximately represented by an exponential type having the characteristic energy of 2 keV. The correlation between the electron density and the N2+ 4278 Å brightness can be reasonably explained by considering the simultaneous effects on the ionization and the optical excitation caused by the primary electrons having a flux of 9 × 109 el/cm2/sec per 1 kR of the 4278 Å emission.Further analyses using the electron density data from four other sounding rockets have shown that the D-region ionization has good correlations to the cosmic noise absorption (CNA) and the magnetic substorm activities observed simultaneously at the ground station, whereas it has poor correlation to the same quantity of the E-region measured in the same experiment. It is found that the observed D-region ionization is much larger than that predicted by the theory which takes into account the Bremsstrahlung X-ray ionization along with the direct impact ionization when it is applied to the precipitating electron flux spectrum consistent to the E-region ionization and optical excitation. After all the present experimental results suggest a dual nature of the electron precipitation spectrum in the substorm, i.e. the softer part which is localized in the auroral arc and the harder part which is spatially wide-spread over the substorm area.  相似文献

Energy distributions of the thermal electrons in the ionospheric plasma were measured on 16 January 1974 and 16 September 1976 by two Japanese rockets, K-9M-45 and K-9M-55 respectively near the focus of Sq current vortex. The main effort was to investigate the energy state of the thermal electrons in a localized hot electron layer which occurs at a height of around 105 km in winter. The results obtained on 16 January 1974 showed that the thermal electrons in the hot electron layer had not a pure Maxwell distribution. While on 16 September 1976, the energy distribution of the electrons was found to be almost Maxwellian in the dynamo region as well as the F-region.  相似文献

Quantitative estimates of ionization sources that maintain the night-time E- and F-region ionosphere are given. Starlight (stellar continuum radiation in the spectral inverval 911–1026 Å) and resonance scattering of solar Ly-β into the night sector are the most important sources in the E-region and are capable of maintaining observable electron densities of order (1–4) × 103 cm?3. Starlight ionization rates have substantial variations (factors of 2–4) with latitude and time of year since the brightest stars in the night sky occur in the southern Milky Way and Orion regions. In the lower F-region the major O+ source in the equatorial ionosphere is 910 Å radiation from the O+ recombination in the F2-region, whereas in the extratropical ionosphere interplanetary 584 Å radiation only exceeds resonance scattering of solar 584 and 304 Å radiation as the dominant O+ source during the month of December.  相似文献

The solar M-region problem is briefly reviewed. The Mustel and the Allen-Saemundsson M-region schools are discussed in the light of (a) recent results on coronal structures and solar wind variations, and (b) statistical analyses of coronal-geomagnetic correlations. From this discussion it is suggested that the M-regions should be identified with the central portion of magnetically open solar regions, or coronal holes. With reference to the papers by Gulbrandsen (1973b, 1974), it is concluded that such an identification is in fact favoured by the great majority of analyses published on the M-region problem during the last 40 yr.It is assumed that historically, the M-region conflict has evolved from the scientific pecularity that geomagnetic phenomena which are actually related to magnetically open structures, were generally not studied in relation to such structures, but to closed magnetic configurations.  相似文献

The effect of lunar tides on the apparent ionospheric drift velocity (V) for an equatorial station Thumba (0.6°S dip) is computed by using nearly six years of data at fixed solar hours. Significant tides are observed in the E-region drifts, particularly around 12.00 hr and in the F-region drifts around 15.00 hr.A good correlation in the phases of the lunar tides in H and V is found to exist, suggesting a strong electrojet control of the horizontal ionospheric drift around these hours.  相似文献
