A detailed biostratigraphic study of four sections (El Kantara, Menaa, Tighanimine and El Gaâga) in the Campanian–Maastrichtian of the Aures Basin in Algeria allows the identification of 109 ostracod species belonging to 50 genera. From a biochronostratigraphic point of view, none of the identified ostracod assemblages are typically restricted to the Campanian or to the Maastrichtian, but rather characterize a range covering the Campanian–Maastrichtian. As regards the paleobiogeography, the presence of species in common between Algeria and other countries or regions enables us to compile four maps showing the distribution of two provinces that developed during the Santonian-Paleocene, i) the South-West and South Tethyan Margins Province, including North Africa, the Middle East and Arabian Peninsula, and ii) the East Atlantic Margin Province, bordering West and Central-West Africa. We can also recognize relationships between the different regions making up these provinces, which remained under more or less arid, subtropical to tropical climates, with ostracods migrating according to the directions of ocean currents during the Late Cretaceous. The dispersal of the ostracods reflects marine communication between these provinces and India, the southern USA and Jamaica, Brazil and Europe.  相似文献

Regional cross sections at the scale of the eastern Maghreb based on subsurface and field data allow presenting the structural styles related to the Middle-Late Eocene compressional events. The structural cross sections depict that the Late Eocene front of the Atlas Belt extends far through the Northern Africa plate margin comparatively to the Late Miocene front cropping out in the Eastern Tunisian Atlas. The sections allow proposing a new subsurface front for the Atlas belt encompassing a large part of the Pelagian-Sirt basins. The consequences of this particular configuration are discussed at the scale of the south Tethys margin and replaced in the frame of the geodynamic evolution of the Mediterranean Domain.  相似文献

The thermotectonic evolution of the East Alpine Rhenodanubian flysch zone (RDFZ) and the collisional history along the orogenic front is reconstructed using apatite fission-track (FT) thermochronology. The apatite FT data provides evidence for a burial depth of at least 6 km for the samples, which were totally reset. Burial was not deeper than 11 km, since the zircon fission-track system was not reset. The RDFZ represents an accretionary wedge with a complex burial and cooling history due to successive and differential accretion and exhumation. The sedimentary sequences were deposited along a convergent margin, where accretion started before Maastrichtian and lasted until Miocene. Accretion propagated from a central area (Salzburg-Ybbsitz) both to the west and to the east. In the west, accretion lasted from Middle Eocene to Early Oligocene, reflecting underplating of the RDFZ by the European continental margin sediments. In the east, where three nappes (Greifenstein, Kahlenberg and Laab nappes) can be distinguished, the exhumation started between Late Oligocene and Early Miocene. The Kahlenberg and Laab nappes show total resetting of the apatite FT ages, while in the Greifenstein nappe there is only partial resetting. According to a new paleogeographic reconstruction, the Kahlenberg and Laab nappes were placed on top of the Greifenstein nappe by an out-of-sequence thrust.  相似文献

Cenomanian, Turonian and Coniacian ostracods from a borehole in the coastal zone of the Tarfayan Basin, south-western Morocco, display affinities with associations from Algeria, Tunisia and the Middle East as well as with the Iberian Peninsula. Relationships with central and southern West Africa are relatively slight, which could be a result of palaeoecological particularities.  相似文献

东海盆地处于西太平洋俯冲带前缘,是发育在华南克拉通基底之上的,以晚白垩世-新生代沉积为主的新生代盆地.东海盆地性质是在活动大陆边缘减薄陆壳之上的,由于洋-陆俯冲消减所引起的张裂、拉伸作用而形成的弧后裂谷型盆地,是西太平洋众多“沟-弧-盆”体系的一部分.东海盆地陆架外缘隆起控制着东海盆地的演化过程,该地质单元形成于晚白垩世,是陆缘隆起和增生楔的复合体,中新世后由于菲律宾海板块的活动而解体为现今的钓鱼岛隆褶带和琉球隆起.结合对陆架外缘隆起的研究后认为,东海盆地晚白垩世以来的演化历程具有3大构造阶段,即:第一阶段,古新世-中始新世西部坳陷形成发展期;第二阶段,中始新世-渐新世东部坳陷形成发展期,其中,中晚始新世太平洋板块的转向是东、西部坳陷构造迁移的分界点;第三阶段,中新世-全新世,东海盆地进入到菲律宾板块影响时期,原先的构造格局开始分解.   相似文献

新疆乌鲁木齐地区上石炭亚系祁家沟组地层出露较完整,沉积序列清晰,古生物化石丰富,但一直以来对祁家沟组的时代多有争论,且介形类研究薄弱。笔者在新疆乌鲁木齐地区祁家沟剖面上石炭亚系祁家沟组中鉴定出的介形类共计11属19种,并系统研究了这些介形类的组合面貌、地层分布,探讨了其古环境和古地理意义。结果表明: (1)根据介形类的组合面貌推断,祁家沟剖面祁家沟组的时代应为晚石炭亚纪莫斯科期—卡西莫夫期; (2)祁家沟组介形类生态类型属于古足目类和光滑速足目类的混合集群,符合构造活动区域的介形类OA1-OA3组合特征; (3)根据介形类的生态组合变化以及沉积学的证据,推断祁家沟剖面祁家沟组整体为滨、浅海沉积,存在海退序列; (4)祁家沟组介形类面貌与同时期的塔里木、准噶尔、中天山以及俄罗斯乌拉尔地区等产出的介形类最为相近,与北美、西欧和华北等板块的介形类也较为相似,表明晚石炭亚纪准噶尔、塔里木等块体聚集,并且距离劳俄大陆较近,所以其可与欧洲、北美板块的介形类进行属种交流。研究结果不仅进一步丰富了祁家沟组的化石材料,也对探索古亚洲洋演化特征和区域矿产开发具有重要的意义。  相似文献

The identification of syn- and late-orogenic flysch deposits, extending from the Betic Cordillera to the Southern Apennines, assists in the reconstruction of the tectonic-sedimentary evolution of the perimediterranean chains. A microplate was located between the European and African Plates during the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous, bordered northwards by the Piemontese Ocean and southwards by another (North Africa ‘Flysch’ Basin or Maghrebian) Ocean. The Piemontese Ocean and the northern margin of the microplate were structured from the Late Cretaceous to the Eocene to create an Eo-alpine Chain. The southern margin of the microplate was deformed in the Aquitanian, when the internal areas of the Maghrebian Ocean were characterized by syn-orogenic flysch deposits. This episode culminated with metamorphism (25–22 Ma) and nappe emplacement, which destroyed the former palaeogeography and created an orogenic belt (AlKaPeCa). Afterwards, a lower Burdigalian late-orogenic cycle started in the deformed area, which as a result of the opening of the Algero-Provençal Basin, caused the fragmentation of the AlKaPeCa, its thrusting on the ‘Flysch’ Basin and the collision with the North Africa and South Iberia Margins. These latter were folded and thrusted, the ‘Flysch’ Units pushed over the External Domain and also back-thrusted. Langhian late-orogenic deposits suture the new tectonic features. Finally, the whole orogen was thrust onto the foredeep during the Middle–Late Miocene.  相似文献

A small concentration of Acheulian cleavers and handaxes within the driest region on Earth adds to the increasing evidence that the eastern Sahara was considerably more verdant during the Middle Pleistocene than it is today. The similarities to stone artifact assemblages of Acheulian sites in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Levant support the evidence for the movement of hominids, utilizing the Kombewa lithic technology, between Africa and the Middle East during the Middle Pleistocene. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

贵州省紫云县宗地乡下二叠统隆林阶实测地层剖面中含类化石 8属 2 1种。就类动物群的特征分子及属种分异度等而言 ,宗地剖面与广西宜山马脑山剖面相同 ,均以 Staffella与 Pseudoendothyra为标志 ,但宗地剖面类动物群属种分异度较高 ;在类动物群物种主要构成类群上 ,宗地剖面与云南广南小独山剖面情况较为相似 ,皆以 Pseudofusulina与 Schwagerina分子共同繁荣为特征 ,但属种分异度相对较低。宗地剖面隆林期沉积环境总体上类似于开阔台地环境 ,但与典型的台地边缘及滨海边缘沉积环境相比 ,其水动力条件相对较差、能量相对较低。  相似文献

Orthophragminids from the Bartonian Fulra Limestone in Kutch, India and the coeval units in Sulaiman Range in Pakistan suggest the establishment of a significant number of endemic species in the Indian subcontinent (Eastern Tethys). Among a total of fifteen species of Discocyclina, Orbitoclypeus and Asterocyclina, six of them appear to be confined to Indian subcontinent while seven species are common both to the peri-Mediterranean/Europe region (Western Tethys) and Indian subcontinent. Two species, Asterocyclina sireli, a four-ribbed species of possibly Indo-Pacific origin, and Orbitoclypeus haynesi that form large populations in Fulra Limestone, appear to have spread into North Africa and Turkey but not into European platforms as a response to Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO). The lack of Lutetian and Priabonian fauna in the studied sections, either due to a hiatus or unsuitable depositional environments, hampers the establishment of the actual stratigraphic ranges of the identified taxa. Our record provides us to characterize the orthophragminids in shallow benthic zone (SBZ) 17 for Eastern Tethys in detail by comparing the data from the above localities with those from the North Africa, Europe and Turkey, showing the change in diversity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Maar craters often contain exceptionally preserved fossils and maar sediments may reflect detailed environmental changes. Volcanosedimentary processes in a Middle Eocene maar crater lake are illustrated by the deposits of Eckfeld Maar in the Tertiary Hocheifel Volcanic Field (Rhenish Massif, Germany). The maar origin of the basin is evident from a circular negative gravity anomaly which indicates a low-density funnel-shaped basin filling. From the facies analysis of an Eocene (Eckfeld) and a Pleistocene (Döttingen) maar we develop a lithozone classification for the interpretation of maar sediments: syn-/post-eruptive breccias are followed by a fining-upwards sequence of lacustrine mud with coarse layers and final swamp deposits. From the facies analysis and regional geological data we reconstruct the pre- to post-eruptive history of a maar crater prior to post-Eocene uplift. These observations can be used for the interpretation of Tertiary and Quaternary maar craters that are ideal fossil and sediment traps.  相似文献

The Cenomanian–Turonian ammonite biostratigraphical framework for the southern Tethys margin (North Africa, Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula) is becoming better understood. A first attempt at a synthetic range chart is presented, with 85 taxa and precise correlations for ammonites along a west–east transect from Morocco to Oman, inclusive of the Trans-Saharan Seaway as far south as northern Nigeria. On the basis of a critical review of ammonite taxonomy, 13 bioevents can be identified in the interval from the Late Cenomanian to the Early Turonian (c. 3.5 myr) with each bioevent corresponding to a time interval of approximately 270,000 years, on average. They are consistent throughout several regions along the southern Tethys margin, though some gaps remain, at least at the stage boundary. These bioevents are correlated with the zonation defined for the stratotype (GSSP) of the base of the Turonian in the Western Interior (USA). The paleobiogeographic distribution of ammonites reveals some endemism but the predominant picture is that of a homogeneous fauna throughout the area, even though distinct Boreal and Western Tethys (Atlantic domain) marine influences are evident. An interpretation of the evolution of conch morphology and ornamentation through the zones of the Late Cenomanian–Early Turonian is proposed.  相似文献

There is a great similarity between the Galicia margin and the Aquitaine margin (i.e. the Aquitaine Basin and the North Pyrenean zone). In particular, the timing of the rifting as well as the resulting structures (exposure of perodotite, tilted fault blocks, normal and transverse faults, half grabens) are practically the same. This comparison leads to the interpretation that the northern side of the Pyrenean fold belt is inherited from the Mesozoic deep passive margin of Europe. The Cenozoic thrust sheets and reverse faults of the northern Pyrenees zone are tentatively interpreted as former rift structures (tilted blocks and listric faults) which were removed during the convergence of the Iberian and European plates during the Paleocene and Eocene.  相似文献

A new multi-thermochronological dataset from Corsica–Sardinia is here employed to constrain the Meso–Cenozoic evolution of the Western Mediterranean area and the problematic transition in space and time between the opposite-dipping Alpine (European) and Apenninic (Adriatic) subductions.The dataset, including zircon and apatite fission track and apatite (U–Th)/He data, covers the whole Meso–Cenozoic time interval, and fits the theoretical age pattern that is expected in distal passive margins after continental break-up. This demonstrates that Corsica–Sardinia represents a fragment of the northern Tethyan margin still preserving the thermochronological fingerprint acquired during Middle Jurassic rifting. Mesozoic apatite (U–Th)/He ages from crustal sections located close to the Tethyan rift axis (i.e., central and eastern Sardinia) show that no European continental subduction took place south of Corsica since the Mesozoic. Along the Sardinia transect, post-Jurassic Adria–Europe convergence was possibly accommodated by Adriatic subduction, consistent with the onset of orogenic magmatism. In middle Eocene–Oligocene times, the northward translation of the Adriatic slab beneath the former Tethyan margin induced a coeval northward migration of erosional pulses at the surface, constrained by a trend of progressively decreasing fission track ages from southern Sardinia to NW Corsica. The Adriatic slab reached the Alpine wedge of Corsica by the end of the Oligocene without any breakoff of the European slab, and started retreating in Neogene times triggering the long-recognized basin opening in the backarc region.  相似文献

The U–Pb isotope data and corresponding ages of detrital zircons from rocks of the basal complexes of the Uralides of different segments of the Ural Fold Belt are considered. It was established that complexes of ancient domains of the East European Platform (Volga-Uralia, Sarmatia, Kola, etc.) seem to have been the main provenance areas of the clastic material for the Southern, Middle, and Northern Urals. This means that there were relatively remote and local (igneous formations of the pre-Uralides) provenance areas. Rift rock associations of the Uralides of the Subpolar and Polar Urals were formed mainly through erosion of local provenance areas (predominantly, Late Riphean–Vendian island-arc and orogenic magmatic complexes of the Proto-Uralides–Timanides). Detrital zircons of Riphean age dominate in rocks of the basal complexes of the Uralides. A source for them could have been rock complexes of Svecofennian-Norwegian Orogen and Cadomides of the Scythian-Turan Plate, intraplate magmatic formations, and metamorphic complexes, as well as blocks accreted to the margin of the East European Platform in the Late Precambrian–Cambrian and later detached and displaced during the Ordovician rifting and spreading. In general, the basal complexes of Uralides were formed owing to supply of clastic material from both remote and local sources. Despite the appearance of information of a totally new level (U–Pb isotope ages of detrital zircons, their Lu–Hf systematics, and the distribution features of rare earth and trace elements), the contribution of these sources to the formation of the Late Cambrian–Early Ordovician clastic strata is hardly possible at present to evaluate.  相似文献

通过对东海陆架盆地西湖凹陷十多条地震剖面的精细解释,发现西湖凹陷自晚白垩世以来,经历了早期的拉张和晚期的断续挤压两个构造演化阶段.晚期的断续挤压在凹陷内产生构造反转的样式复杂多样,可划分为上下均正型、下正上逆型、下凹上凸型、上下均凸型、下正上隆型和下隆上逆型等6种单个的反转构造样式及y形、帚状、"似花状"等7种反转构造组合样式.对反转断层生长指数(Gi)并结合平衡剖面的研究,表明西湖凹陷新生代经历了多期构造反转.通过计算反转率(Ri),发现凹陷内反转程度存在明显的不均一性,具有中带强和东、西弱的特征.结合晚白垩世以来东亚大陆边缘的区域构造演化及新生代以来太平洋板块相对欧亚板块的俯冲速度讨论了西湖凹陷构造反转的机制,并探讨了它对油气勘探的意义.  相似文献

The Western Foothills of Taiwan was known to be composed of Late Oligocene to Pleistocene shallow marine strata continuously deposited on the stable passive Chinese continental margin without significant stratigraphic break. Here we present multiple micropaleontological evidences, including occurrence of larger foraminifera Discocyclina dispansa ex. interc. sella-dispansa and calcareous nannoplanktons, to show that there are Middle Eocene marine strata (first named as the Chungliao Formation) exposed in the Tsukeng anticline of the Western Foothills, central Taiwan. Occurrences of intact tests with thin delicate outer rims and well-preserved embryonic chambers suggest that the Discocyclina dispansa ex. interc. sella-dispansa (Lutetian to Bartonian in the Tethys region) are buried indigenously on shallow inner shelf during an episodic transgression in the Early Middle Eocene. The conclusion is consistent with a biostratigraphy study of calcareous nannoplanktons (Zones NP14–15) in the shale/sandstone alternations overlying the Discocyclina-bearing bed of the Chungliao Formation and calcareous nannofossils of Zone NP16 integrated with an age dating of 38.8 ± 1 Ma (Late Middle Eocene) on zircon grains of the overlying Pinglin Tuff. The Middle Eocene syn-rift sequences (Chungliao Formation and Pinglin Tuff) exposed along the Tsukeng anticline are unconformably covered by the latest Oligocene–Miocene post-rift sequence, a scenario similar to what have been drilled in the East China Sea-Taiwan Strait-South China Sea. This rift basin (named as the Nantou Basin) is sitting on the Peikang Basement High margin which further extends southwestward to the Central Uplift of the Pearl River Mouth Basin in the northern slope of the South China Sea. The present work documents a hitherto unknown occurrence of the exposed early Tertiary marine rift basin sequence in the Western Foothills of Taiwan. The study extends our knowledge of the Western Foothills geohistory from the Late Oligocene downward to the Early Middle Eocene. The occurrence of the Paleogene Nantou rift basin in the Western Foothills may also suggest that there could have similar Paleogene rift sequences exposed in other parts of the Taiwan mountain belt like the Hsüehshan Range and the Central Range east of the Western Foothills.  相似文献

Mineral exploration drillholes and geoelectric prospecting provide for the first time evidence for thrusting of the South Carpathian Paleozoic basement over northerly adjacent Middle Miocene sediments. Investigations were carried out in two locations, 30 km apart, along the northern margin of the Poiana Rusca Mountains, Romania, southwestern Carpathians. Drill holes in both locations encountered weakly consolidated Middle Miocene clay, sand, and fine gravel below Paleozoic low-grade metamorphic rocks. Intersections from various drill holes demonstrate the presence of low-angle thrusting. Kinematic indicators are so far lacking, but with a thrust direction oriented roughly normal to strike of the Poiana Rusca Mountains, minimum displacement is 1–1.4 km in northwestern or northern direction, respectively. Thrusting occurred most likely during the Late Miocene–Pliocene, whereafter Quaternary regional uplift dissected the thrust plane. In the tectonic framework of Neogene dextral translation of the Tisza–Dacia Block against the southerly adjacent Moesian Platform, transtension appears responsible for Middle Miocene basin formation along the northern margin of the Poiana Rusca region. Proceeding collision of the Tisza–Dacia Block with the East European Craton introduced stronger impingement of the Tisza–Dacia Block against the Moesian Platform, leading to a Late Miocene–Pliocene transpressional regime, in which the northern Poiana Rusca basement was thrust over its adjacent Middle Miocene sediments.  相似文献

The Ypresian Cambay Shale Formation at Vastan and Mangrol lignite mines in Gujarat, western India, has yielded a rich vertebrate fauna with numerous taxa of European affinities. Here we report a new,approximately contemporary vertebrate assemblage from two fossiliferous layers in the nearby mine of Tadkeshwar. These layers have yielded a similar mammal fauna with the co-occurrence of the perissodactyl-like cambaytheriid Cambaytherium thewissi, the adapoid primates Marcgodinotius indicus and cf. Asiadapis cambayensis, and the hyaenodontid Indohyaenodon raoi. The presence of these species in both Vastan and Tadkeshwar mines and at different levels suggests that the deposits between the two major lignite seams represent a single land mammal age. Apart from the aforementioned species there is a new, smaller species of Cambaytherium, and a new genus and species of esthonychid tillodont. This fauna also contains the first large early Eocene vertebrates from India, including an unidentified Coryphodon-like pantodont, a dyrosaurid crocodyliform and a new giant madtsoiid snake. Among the Tadkeshwar vertebrates several taxa are of Gondwana affinities, such as Pelomedusoides turtles, dyrosaurids, and large madtsoiids, attesting that the early Eocene was a crucial period in India during which Laurasian taxa of European affinities co-existed with relict taxa from Gondwana before the India-Asia collision. Our results suggest that terrestrial faunas could have dispersed to or from Europe during episodes of contact between the Indian subcontinent and different island blocks along the northern margin of the Neotethys, such as the Kohistane Ladakh island-arc system. Gondwana taxa might represent remnants of ghost lineages shared with Madagascar, which reached the Indian subcontinent during the late Cretaceous; alternatively they might have come from North Africa and passed along the southern margin of the Neotethys to reach the Indian subcontinent. These dispersals would have been possible as a result of favourable paleogeographic conditions such as the particular Neotethys conformation during the beginning of the early Eocene.  相似文献

The present study deals with the lithostratigraphy and planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy of the Late Eocene-Middle Miocene sequence in the Al Bardia area, northeast Libya. The lithostratigraphical studies carried out on three stratigraphical surface sections, namely Wade Al Rahib, Wadi Al Hash and Wadi Al Zeitun, led to the recognition of three rock units from base to top: (1) the Al Khowaymat Formation (Late Eocene-Early Oligocene); (2) the Al Faidiyah Formation (Late Oligocene-Early Miocene); and (3) the Al Jaghboub Formation (Early-Middle Miocene). The planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphical analysis led also to the recognition of nine planktonic foraminiferal zones ranged in age from Late Eocene to Early Miocene with one larger foraminiferal zone of Middle Miocene age. These are, from base to top, as follows: Truncorotaloides rohri Zone (Late-Middle Eocene, Lutetian), Globigerinatheka semiinvoluta and Turborotalia cerroazulensis s.l. Zones (Late Eocene, Priaborian), Cassigerinella chipolensis/Pseudohasitgerina micra Zone (Early Oligocene, Rupelian), Globigerina ciperoensis ciperoensis, Globorotalia kugleri Zones (Late Oligocene, Chattian), Globigerinoides primordius Zone (Early Miocene, Aquitanian), Globigerinoides altiaperturus/Catapsydrax dissimilis and Globigerinoides trilobus Zones (Early Miocene, Burdigalian), and the larger benthonic foraminiferal zone, Borelis melo melo Zone (Middle Miocene, Langhian to Serravallian). The study of planktonic foraminifera proved the existence of a regional unconformity between the Early and Late Oligocene, with the Middle Oligocene deposits being absent (absence of Globigerina ampliapertura and Globorotalia opima opima Zones), and another, smaller unconformity located between the Late Eocene and Early Oligocene, in which the uppermost part of the Late Eocene is missing.  相似文献
