Abstract— Miono et al. (1990) and Miono and Nakanishi (1994) have proposed that the build‐up of natural thermoluminescence (TL) in a drained layer directly below the meteorite fusion crust can be used to determine terrestrial ages of meteorites in the 40 to 200 ka range. We have measured the natural TL of the drained layer of 15 meteorites. The data indicate that this technique could be used to determine terrestrial ages of meteorites with ages <200 ka, after which TL equilibrium is reached. Comparison of TL build‐up with terrestrial ages for a suite of Antarctic meteorites suggests that the meteorites have been exposed to temperatures of 0 to 5 °C. The close correspondence between natural TL levels and surface exposure TL growth curves suggest that Allan Hills meteorites with ages <200 ka have spent a significant portion of their terrestrial history exposed on the ice surface, rather than being buried in the ice sheet. The technique is, however, sensitive to thermal history; and, for Antarctic meteorites with terrestrial ages <200 ka, natural TL of the drained zone largely reflects exposure on the ice surface.  相似文献

Abstract— We determined terrestrial ages of ordinary chondrites from the Lewis Cliff stranding area, East Antarctica, on the basis of the concentrations of cosmogenic 10Be (t½; = 1.51 Ma), 26Al (t½; = 0.705 Ma), and 36Cl (t½; = 0.301 Ma). After an initial 26Al γ-ray survey of 91 meteorites suggested that many have terrestrial ages >0.1 Ma, we selected 62 meteorites for 10Be and 26Al measurements by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and measured 36Cl in twelve of those. Low terrestrial ages (<0.1 Ma) were found for ~60% of the meteorites, whereas all others have ages between 0.1 and 0.5 Ma, except for one exceptional age of >2 Ma (Welten et al., 1997). Our major conclusions are: (1) The Lewis Cliff H-chondrites show similar ages to those from the Allan Hills icefields, but the L-chondrites are about a factor of 2 younger than those from Allan Hills, which indicates that Lewis Cliff is a younger stranding area. (2) The terrestrial age distributions at different parts of the Lewis Cliff stranding area generally agree with simple meteorite concentration models, although differences in weathering rate may also play a role. (3) We confirm that meteorites with natural thermoluminescence (TL) levels >80 krad are associated with low terrestrial ages (Benoit et al., 1992) but conclude that natural TL levels <80 krad can not be used to calculate the terrestrial age of a meteorite. Natural TL levels do seem useful to estimate relative terrestrial ages of large groups of meteorites and to determine differences in the surface exposure age of paired meteorite fragments. (4) Of the 62 meteorites measured with AMS, 31 were assigned to 11 different pairing groups, mainly on the basis of their cosmogenic nuclide record. The meteorites are estimated to represent between 42 and 52 distinct falls.  相似文献

Abstract— One of the five lines of evidence used by McKay et al. (1996) for relic life in the Martian meteorite Allan Hills (ALH) 84001 was the presence of objects thought to be microfossils. These ovoid and elongated forms are similar to structures found in terrestrial rocks and described as “nanobacteria” (Folk, 1993; McBride et al, 1994). Using the same procedures and apparatus as McKay et al. (1996), we have found structures on internal fracture surfaces of lunar meteorites that cannot be distinguished from the objects described on similar surfaces in ALH 84001. The lunar surface is currently a sterile environment and probably always has been. However, the lunar and Martian meteorites share a common terrestrial history, which includes many thousands of years of exposure to Antarctic weathering. Although we do not know the origin of these ovoid and elongated forms, we suggest that their presence on lunar meteorites indicates that the objects described by McKay et al. (1996) are not of Martian biological origin.  相似文献

Abstract— We have measured the concentrations of the cosmogenic radionuclides 10Be, 26Al and 36Cl (half-lives 1.51 Ma, 716 ka, and 300 ka, respectively) in two different laboratories by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) techniques, as well as concentrations and isotopic compositions of stable He, Ne and Ar in the Antarctic H-chondrite Allan Hills (ALH) 88019. In addition, nuclear track densities were measured. From these results, it is concluded that the meteoroid ALH 88019 had a preatmospheric radius of (20 ± 5) cm and a shielding depth for the analyzed samples of between 4 and 8 cm. Using calculated and experimentally determined production rates of cosmogenic nuclides, an exposure age of ~40 Ma is obtained from cosmogenic 21Ne and 38Ar. The extremely low concentrations of radionuclides are explained by a very long terrestrial age for this meteorite of 2 ± 0.4 Ma. A similarly long terrestrial age was found so far only for the Antarctic L-chondrite Lewis Cliff (LEW) 86360. Such long ages establish one boundary condition for the history of meteorites in Antarctica.  相似文献

Abstract— Antarctic meteorites are considerably smaller, on average, than those recovered elsewhere in the world, and seem to represent a different portion of the mass distribution of infalling meteorites. When an infall rate appropriate to the size of Antarctic meteorites is used (1000 meteorites 10 grams or larger/km2/106 years), it is found that direct infall can produce the meteorite accumulations found on eight ice fields in the Allan Hills region in times ranging from a few thousand to nearly 200 000 years, with all but the Allan Hills Main and Near Western ice fields requiring less than 30 000 years. Meteorites incorporated into the ice over time are concentrated on the surface when the ice flows into a local area of rapid ablation. The calculated accumulation times, which can be considered the average age of the exposed ice, agree well with terrestrial ages for the meteorites and measured ages of exposed ice. Since vertical concentration of meteorites through removal of ice by ablation is sufficient to explain the observed meteorite accumulations, there is no need to invoke mechanisms to bring meteorites from large areas to the relatively small blue-ice patches where they are found. Once a meteorite is on a bare ice surface, freeze-thaw cycling and wind break down the meteorite and remove it from the ice. The weathering lifetime of a 100-gram meteorite on Antarctic ice is on the order of 10 000 ± 5000 years.  相似文献

Abstract— Amino acid analyses of the Antarctic CM2 chondrites Allan Hills (ALH) 83100 and Lewis Cliff (LEW) 90500 using liquid chromatography‐time of flight‐mass spectrometry (LC‐ToF‐MS) coupled with UV fluorescence detection revealed that these carbonaceous meteorites contain a suite of indigenous amino acids not present in Antarctic ice. Several amino acids were detected in ALH 83100, including glycine, alanine, β‐alanine, γ‐amino‐n‐butyric acid (γ‐ABA), and α‐aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) with concentrations ranging from 250 to 340 parts per billion (ppb). In contrast to ALH 83100, the CM2 meteorites LEW 90500 and Murchison had a much higher total abundance of these amino acids (440–3200 ppb). In addition, ALH 83100 was found to have lower abundances of the α‐dialkyl amino acids AIB and isovaline than LEW 90500 and Murchison. There are three possible explanations for the depleted amino acid content in ALH 83100: 1) amino acid leaching from ALH 83100 during exposure to Antarctic ice meltwater, 2) a higher degree of aqueous alteration on the ALH 83100 parent body, or 3) ALH 83100 originated on a chemically distinct parent body from the other two CM2 meteorites. The high relative abundance of ?‐amino‐n‐caproic acid (EACA) in the ALH 83100 meteorite as well as the Antarctic ice indicates that Nylon‐6 contamination from the Antarctic sample storage bags may have occurred during collection.  相似文献

Abstract– We have examined the relationship between natural thermoluminescence (TL) and 26Al in 120 Antarctic meteorites in order to explore the orbital history and terrestrial ages of these meteorites. Our results confirm the observations of Hasan et al. (1987) which were based on 23 meteorites. For most meteorites there was a positive correlation between natural TL and 26Al, reflecting their similarity in decay rate under Antarctic conditions and thus in terrestrial age. For a small group with low TL and high 26Al a small perihelion was proposed. Within this group, natural TL decreases with terrestrial age as determined by 36Cl measurements, although the rate of TL decay is faster (half‐life approximately 10 ka) and the ages that can be determined are smaller (<200 ka) than for most meteorites. The faster decay rate and lower natural TL levels are a reflection of recent exposure to higher radiation doses and higher temperatures, since this history would populate less stable TL traps with smaller electron densities. We sort the 120 meteorites by perihelion and terrestrial age. The normal perihelion group range up to approximately 1000 ka and the small perihelion group range up to approximately 200 ka. An intermediate perihelion group tends to have short terrestrial ages (20–60 ka). There is acceptable agreement between most (34 out of 43) of our present terrestrial age estimates and those determined by isotopic means, the exceptions reflecting complex irradiation histories, long burial times in the Antarctic, or other issues.  相似文献

Abstract— We measured the concentrations of the cosmogenic radionuclides 10Be (half-life = 1.51 × 106 a), 26Al (7.05 × 105 a) and 36Cl (3.01 × 105 a) in Lewis Cliff (LEW) 86360, an L-chondrite from the Lewis Cliff stranding area, East Antarctica. In addition, the concentrations and isotopic compositions of He, Ne and Ar were measured. The combined results yield a terrestrial age of 2.35 ± 0.15 Ma. Only one other stony meteorite with a similar terrestrial age (~2 Ma) is known from the Allan Hills stranding area (ALH 88019), whereas all previously dated stony meteorites from Antarctica are younger than 1 Ma. We argue that LEW 86360 spent most of its terrestrial residence time deep inside the ice, near the base of the glacier, where ice flow rates are much lower than at the surface. The terrestrial ages of LEW 86360 and ALH 88019 are consistent with existing hypotheses concerning the stability and persistence of the East Antarctic ice sheet.  相似文献

Abstract— Examination of fracture surfaces near the fusion crust of the martian meteorite Allan Hills (ALH) 84001 have been conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) and has revealed structures strongly resembling mycelium. These structures were compared with similar structures found in Antarctic cryptoendolithic communities. On morphology alone, we conclude that these features are not only terrestrial in origin but probably belong to a member of the Actinomycetales, which we consider was introduced during the Antarctic residency of this meteorite. If true, this is the first documented account of terrestrial microbial activity within a meteorite from the Antarctic blue ice fields. These structures, however, do not bear any resemblance to those postulated to be martian biota, although they are a probable source of the organic contaminants previously reported in this meteorite.  相似文献

Abstract— We have previously identified a subgroup of Antarctic H chondrites that are significantly different from H chondrites among the modern falls in terms of induced thermoluminescence (TL), metallographic cooling rate, and cosmogenic inert gas contents. Here we examine their terrestrial and thermal history as apparent in their natural TL and radioactive cosmogenic isotope abundances. These meteorites have a tendency towards high 26Al activities and fairly short 14C and 36Cl terrestrial ages (generally <100 ka). They also sometimes exhibit unusually high natural TL levels, which we have previously interpreted as indicating orbital evolution from perihelia >1.2 AU to ~1 AU within the last <105 years. We suggest that the nature of the meteorites falling to Earth is not independent of time but depends on stochastic events, such as the breakup of parent bodies and recent variations in orbit.  相似文献

Abstract— The enrichment of fluorine on the surface of Antarctic meteorites is investigated by applying the nuclear reactions 19F(p, αγ)16O or 19F(p, p'γ)19F with the proton induced gamma emission (PIGE) technique, a class of nuclear reaction analysis (NRA). Results for the Antarctic meteorites ALHA77294, TIL 82409, LEW 86015, ALHA77003, and ALH 83108 are presented. Possible sources of terrestrial F are: volcanic exhalation, tephra layers (volcanic glass), continental soil dust, or sea spray. Material from blue‐ice dust‐band samples also shows concentrations of F that are significantly higher than the bulk concentrations of meteorites. Finally, a quick investigation for Antarctic meteorites by external PIGE is proposed, leading to a F‐contamination index that supplements the qualitative ABC‐weathering index.  相似文献

Abstract— The enrichment of F on Antarctic meteorites is the result of their exposure to the atmosphere, and its measurement allows a subdivision of the terrestrial age into a duration of exposure on the ice and the time a meteorite was enclosed by the ice. In many cases, the periods of surface exposure are only small fractions of the terrestrial ages of meteorites collected in Antarctica. The enrichment of F on the surfaces of Antarctic achondrites was investigated by means of nuclear reaction analysis (NRA): scanning proton beams with an energy of 2.7 and 3.4 MeV were used to induce the reactions 19F(p,αγ)16O and 19F(p, p'γ)19F, respectively. Gamma signals proportional to the F content were measured. The following Antarctic achondrites were investigated: Martian meteorite ALH 84001; diogenite ALHA77256; the eucrites ALHA81011 and ALHA78132; and in addition, the H5 chondrite ALHA79025. For ALH 84001, our data indicate a period of exposure on the ice of <500 years. Thus, this specimen was enclosed in the ice >95% of its terrestrial age of 13 000 years.  相似文献

Abstract— Microfossils have been separated and identified in four high metamorphic grade chondrites from Allan Hills and Queen Alexandra Range, Antarctica. Diatoms and opal phytoliths representing both marine and terrestrial flora were recognized among the dust removed from cracks in all meteorites studied. It is likely that contamination of Antarctic meteorites with such biogenic material is ubiquitous. Standard clean room procedures to avoid laboratory introduction of microfossils into the meteorites were followed, and the genera and species identified so far are characteristic of marine, freshwater, and continental environments. The most probable mechanism for introduction of the microfossils into the meteorites is eolian transport to and on the polar ice cap. It is likely that wind-driven systems may sample atmospherically transported material from large portions of the southern hemisphere. Entrainment of terrestrial microfossils is probably a typical interaction of meteorites with the Antarctic environment and must be recognized and accounted for in any attempt to use Antarctic meteorites as sources of extraterrestrial life forms. Organic molecules derived from microfossils are likely to be pervasive throughout any crack network present in a meteorite at all scales from millimeter to submicron. Cracks are a ubiquitous consequence of weathering in and on the Antarctic ice and the probability that crack surfaces contain terrestrial organic materials is high.  相似文献

Abstract Research on meteorite finds, especially those from the Antarctic and from desert regions in Australia, Africa, and America, has become increasingly important, notably in studies of possible changes in the nature of the meteorite flux in the past. One important piece of information needed in the study of such meteorites is their terrestrial age which can be determined using a variety of methods, including 14C, 36Cl, and 81Kr. Natural thermoluminescence (TL) levels in meteorites can also be used as an indicator of terrestrial age. In this paper, we compare 14C-determined terrestrial ages with natural TL levels in finds from the Prairie States (central United States), a group of finds from Roosevelt County (New Mexico, USA), and a group from the Sahara Desert. We find that, in general, the natural TL data are compatible with the 14C-derived terrestrial ages using a 20 °C TL decay curve for the Prairie States and Roosevelt County and a 30 °C decay curve for the Saharan meteorites. We also present TL data for a group of meteorites from the Sahara desert which has not been studied using cosmogenic radionuclides. Within these data there are distinct terrestrial age clusters which probably reflect changes in meteorite preservation efficiency over ~ 15, 000 years in the region.  相似文献

Abstract— We report radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA) data for U, Co, Au, Sb, Ga, Rb, Cs, Se, Ag, Te, Zn, In, Bi, Tl, and Cd (ordered by increasing ease of vaporization and loss from the Murchison CM2 chondrite during open-system heating) in nine Antarctic C2 and C3 chondrites. These meteorites exhibit properties (obtained by reflectance spectroscopy, O isotopic mass spectrometry and/or mineralogy-petrology) suggesting thermal metamorphism in their parent bodies. Five of these meteorites (Asuka (A) 881655, Yamato (Y) 793495, Y-790992, Pecora Escarpment (PCA) 91008, and Y-86789—paired with Y-86720) exhibit significant depletion of the most thermally mobile 1–5 trace elements, which is consistent with open-system loss during extended parent-body heating (under conditions duplicated by week-long heating of the Murchison C2 chondrite, heated at 500–700 °C in a low-pressure (initially 10?5atm) H2 atmosphere). From earlier data, three other C3 chondrites—Allan Hills (ALH) 81003, ALH 85003, and Lewis Cliffs (LEW) 85332—show significant Cd depletion. Nine additional C2 and C3 chondrites show no evidence of mobile trace element depletion—including Y-793321, which by all other criteria was mildly metamorphosed thermally. Either metamorphism of these nine meteorites occurred under closed conditions and/or alteration took place under such mild conditions that even Cd could not be lost. The RNAA data suggest that 10 of the 46 Antarctic carbonaceous chondrites (including 4 of 37 from Victoria Land and 6 of 9 from Queen Maud Land) exhibit open-system loss of at least some thermally mobile trace elements by heating in their parent bodies, whereas none of the 25 non-Antarctic falls experienced this. These results are consistent with the idea that the Antarctic sampling of near-Earth material differs from that being sampled today.  相似文献

Abstract— Hydrogen‐isotopic compositions of carbonate and maskelynite in Allan Hills (ALH) 84001 were measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). the δd values of both minerals show considerable deviation. The deviation seems to be caused by addition of varying amounts of terrestrial water in the case of carbonate. In the case of maskelynite, H is heterogeneously distributed and the deviation in δD values seems to be due to mixing of this indigenous heavy H with isotopically normal H present in the SIMS chamber. The indigenous δD value in ALH 84001 seems to be ~2000%‰. Carbonate rather than maskelynite seems to be the main carrier of H in ALH 84001. Because ALH 84001 is ~4 Ga old, the H‐isotopic composition suggests that a large fraction of the initial martian atmosphere had already escaped by 4 Ga.  相似文献

Abstract— We measured concentrations and isotopic ratios of noble gases in enstatite (E) chondrites Allan Hills (ALH) 85119 and MacAlpine Hills (MAC) 88136. These two meteorites contain solar and cosmogenic noble gases. Based on the solar and cosmogenic noble gas compositions, we calculated heliocentric distances, parent body exposure ages, and space exposure ages of the two meteorites. The parent body exposure ages are longer than 6.7 Ma for ALH 85119 and longer than 8.7 Ma for MAC 88136. The space exposure ages are shorter than 2.2 Ma for ALH 85119 and shorter than 3.9 Ma for MAC 88136. The estimated heliocentric distances are more than 1.1 AU for ALH 85119 and 1.3 AU for MAC 88136. Derived heliocentric distances indicate the locations of parent bodies in the past when constituents of the meteorites were exposed to the Sun. From the mineralogy and chemistry of E chondrites, it is believed that E chondrites formed in regions within 1.4 AU from the Sun. The heliocentric distances of the two E chondrite parent bodies are not different from the formation regions of E chondrites. This may imply that heliocentric distances of E chondrites have been relatively constant from their formation stage to the stage of exposure to the solar wind.  相似文献

Abstract— The nature and isotopic composition of carbonaceous components in a variety of ordinary chondrites have been studied using stepped combustion. The samples were chosen to include falls, finds and Antarctic meteorites; specimens from all three chemical groups (H, L and LL) have been analysed. Effort was concentrated mostly on the low petrologic type meteorites (i.e., type 3); however, types 4–6 were also included in the study. Apart from terrestrial contaminants and weathering products, some of the unequilibrated ordinary chondrites appear to contain an indigenous organic component. In addition, most of the samples studied show evidence for an amorphous/graphitic component. This exists as C-rich aggregates or as carbon associated with “Huss” matrix. There does not appear to be any difference in δ13C for this carbon between Antarctic and non-Antarctic meteorites. In contrast, low temperature carbon in Antarctic samples is characterized by a 13C-enrichment. This is thought to be due to the influence of terrestrial weathering products introduced in the Antarctic. Curiously, the low temperature carbon in non-Antarctic finds appears to be intermediate in δ13C between Antarctic finds and non-Antarctic falls. This suggests that the weathering processes which are so obviously apparent from Antarctic samples may also extend, albeit in a more limited way, to non-Antarctic meteorites.  相似文献

Abstract— We have measured the 13C/12C and 14C/12C ratios in CO2 released by acid etching of the carbonate-bearing SNC meteorites Allan Hills 84001 and Nakhla. Most of the C released is strongly enriched in 13C. In 10 out of 12 samples, 15‰ <δ13C < 55‰. Terrestrial values of carbonateδ13C from weathering products are generally between ?10 and +10‰. Two leachate samples especially rich in 13C, ALH 84001,27 and Nakhla 25, have elemental Si/Mg ratios much lower than those of the bulk meteorites and 14C activities that are much lower than the values expected for terrestrial carbonates. The former observation indicates that these leachates consist primarily of carbonates and, less likely, phosphates. The latter observation implies that heavy C was introduced not by terrestrial weathering but by extraterrestrial processes. For ALH 84001,121 (sample 27) and Nakhla (BM 1913,26) δ13C = +41‰ and +35‰, respectively. The measured 18O/16O ratios in the leaches are similar: δ18O ~ 15 ± 5‰, contrasting with 4.2‰ in the bulk silicates. We infer that the C in the carbonates retains an extraterrestrial isotopic signature, but probably not O, due to its ease of isotopic exchange (Cole and Ohmoto, 1986).  相似文献

Abstract— Magnetic properties of 26 (of 32) unpaired Martian meteorites (SNCs) are synthesized to further constrain the lithology carrying Martian magnetic crustal sources. Magnetic properties of ultramafic cumulates (i.e., Chassigny, Allan Hills [ALH] 84001) and lherzolitic shergottites (ALH 77005, Lewis Cliff [LEW] 88516) are one or two orders of magnitude too weak to account for the crustal magnetizations, assuming magnetization in an Earth‐like field. Nakhlites and some basaltic shergottites, which are the most magnetic SNCs, show the right intensity. Titanomagnetite is the magnetic carrier in the nakhlites (7 meteorites), whereas in most basaltic shergottites (11 meteorites) it is pyrrhotite. Dhofar (Dho) 378, Los Angeles, and NWA 480/1460 and 2046 are anomalous basaltic shergottites, as their magnetism is mainly due to titanomagnetite. Pyrrhotite should be among the candidate minerals for the magnetized Noachian crust.  相似文献
