We monitored wetland biomass, decomposition, hydrology, and soil porewater chemistry at the Breton Sound estuary, which receives Mississippi River water from the Caernarvon river diversion structure. The estuary was in the direct path of hurricane Katrina in 2005, which caused a dramatic loss of wetlands in the upper basin. From March 2006 to October 2007, we made duplicate measurements at three distance classes from the diversion structure along the estuarine gradient as well as at a reference area, designated Near (N1&2), Mid (M1&2), Far (F1&2), and Ref (R1&2). Above- and belowground live biomass, porewater nutrients (NOx, NH4, and PO4), salinity, sulfide, and soil Eh were measured every 2 months. Water level was monitored with gauges. Above- and belowground decomposition was measured using the litterbag (both) and cotton strip (belowground only) methods. Analysis of porewater parameters showed that stress factors affecting biomass production (porewater salinity, sulfide, flooding, and redox potential) were generally low to moderate, while measurable porewater nutrient concentrations occurred at all sites. Aboveground end of season live (EOSL) standing crop in October ranged from 423 g/m2 at site M2 to 1,515 at site F1, and was significantly greater at site N1 than at sites N2, M1, or M2. Aboveground EOSL biomass during this study was significantly lower than previously measured in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Peak belowground biomass ranged from 8,315 g/m2 at site R2 to 17,890 g/m2 at site N1, which is among the highest reported in the literature, and there were significant increases throughout the study, suggesting recovery from hurricane Katrina. The decomposition bag data did not indicate any significant differences; however, the cotton strip decomposition rate was significantly lower at the lowest depth. Wetland surface vertical accretion ranged from 0.49 cm/year at N2 to 1.24 cm/year at N1, with site N1 significantly greater than N2, M1, F2, and R1, and site N2 significantly less than all other sites except site R1. These findings show that marsh productivity and stability is related to a number of factors and no one factor can explain the impacts of the hurricanes.  相似文献

Stream water from a stream network of 15 small boreal catchments (0.03-67 km2) in northern Sweden was analyzed for unfiltered (total) and filtered (<0.4 μm) concentrations of iron (Fetot and Fe<0.4) and manganese (Mntot and Mn<0.4). The purpose was to investigate the temporal and spatial dynamics of Fe, Mn and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as influenced by snow melt driven spring floods and landscape properties, in particular the proportion of wetland area. During spring flood, concentrations of Fetot, Fe<0.4, Mntot, Mn<0.4 and DOC increased in streams with forested catchments (<2% wetland area). In catchments with high coverage of wetlands (>30% wetland area) the opposite behavior was observed. The hydrogeochemistry of Fe was highly dependent on wetlands as shown by the strong positive correlation of the Fetot/Altot ratio with wetland coverage (r2 = 0.89, p < 0.001). Furthermore, PCA analysis showed that at base flow Fetot and Fe<0.4 were positively associated with wetlands and DOC, whereas they were not associated during peak flow at spring flood. The temporal variation of Fe was likely related to varying hydrological pathways. At peak discharge Fetot was associated with variables like silt coverage, which highlights the importance of particulates during high discharge events. For Mn there was no significant correlation with wetlands, instead, PCA analysis showed that during spring flood Mn was apparently more dependent on the supply of minerogenic particulates from silt deposits on the stream banks of some of the streams. The influence of minerogenic particulates on the concentration of, in particular, Mn was greatest in the larger, lower gradient streams, characterized by silt deposits in the near-stream zone. In the small forested streams underlain by till, DOC was of greater importance for the observed concentrations, as indicated by the positive correlation of both Fetot and Fe<0.4 with DOC (r2 = 0.77 and r2 = 0.76, p < 0.001) at the smallest headwater forest site. In conclusion, wetland area and DOC were important for Fe concentrations in this boreal stream network, whereas silt deposits strongly influenced Mn concentrations. This study highlights the importance of studying stream water chemistry from a landscape perspective in order to address future environmental issues concerning mobility of Fe, Mn and associated trace metals.  相似文献

I present a numerical diffusion-advection-reaction model to simulate CO2 chemistry, δ13C, and oxidation of organic carbon and methane in sediment porewater. The model takes into account detailed reaction kinetics of dissolved CO2 compounds, H2O, H+, OH, boron and sulfide compounds. These reactions are usually assumed to be in local equilibrium, which is shown to be a good approximation in most cases. The model also includes a diffusive boundary layer across which chemical species are transported between bottom water and the sediment-water interface. While chemical concentrations and δ13CTCO2 at these locations are frequently assumed equal, I demonstrate that they can be quite different. In this case, shells of benthic foraminifera do not reflect the desired properties of bottom water, even for species living at the sediment-water interface (z = 0 cm). Environmental conditions recorded in their shells are strongly influenced by processes occurring within the sediment. The model is then applied to settings in the Santa Barbara Basin and at Hydrate Ridge (Cascadia Margin), locations of strong organic carbon and methane oxidation. In contrast to earlier studies, I show that a limited contribution of methane-derived carbon to porewater TCO2 in the Santa Barbara Basin cannot be ruled out. Simulation of methane venting shows that at oxidation rates greater than , the δ13C of porewater TCO2 at z > 1 cm is depleted by more than 15‰ relative to bottom water. Depletions of this magnitude have not been observed in living benthic foraminifera, even at methane vents with much higher oxidation rates. This suggests that foraminifera at these sites either calcify at very shallow sediment depth or during times when oxidation rates are much lower than ∼50 μmol cm−2 y−1.  相似文献

Variability of dissolved Fe2+ and ∑H2S concentrations in porewaters were studied, using cathodic stripping voltammetry (CSV) microelectrodes, in sediments overlain by hypoxic waters in the summer from the southeastern region of Corpus Christi Bay, Texas (CCB) and the Mississippi River Bight (MRB), Louisiana. These measurements were complimented by sediment microcosm studies where oxygen concentrations in the overlying water were manipulated. Sulfate reduction rates, benthic oxygen demand, total reduced sulfide, porewater sulfate, and total organic carbon were also determined. Fe2+ and ∑H2S were the major dissolved redox-reactive dissolved species in these sediments. During hypoxic conditions, an upward migration of porewater Fe2+ and ∑H2S occurred, with Fe2+ reaching much higher maximum concentrations than ∑H2S. Statistically significant (p < 0.05) differences in both Fe2+ and ∑H2S occurred between sediments at the CCB and MRB study sites. Although both sites were Fe-dominated, reactive and dissolved iron were higher while ∑H2S was lower at the MRB site. However, there were no statistically significant (p > 0.05) difference in regard to ∑H2S between microcosm and field monitoring studies. Results indicated that, for Fe2+ and ∑H2S, relatively large and rapid changes occurred in both the concentrations and distributions of these important porewater constituents in response to relatively short-term changes in overlying water oxygen content. Model calculations indicated that conditions in the sediments can be responsible for the induction of hypoxic conditions in the formation of hypoxic overlying waters in <6 days at CCB and ~20 days at MRB.  相似文献

The concentrations of Re, as well as those of several other geochemical variables, were measured in dated sediment cores and in porewater samples from four lacustrine basins in Eastern Canada: one, perennially oxic, located 40 km from Québec City and three, seasonally anoxic, located within 25 km of non-ferrous metal smelters. The drainage basins of these lakes are uninhabited and have not been affected by human activity or wildfires. All of the depth profiles of dissolved Re indicate: higher Re concentrations in the water overlying the sediment than in the porewater; diffusion of Re across the sediment-water interface; a progressive decrease in porewater Re concentrations to reach minimum values of ∼0.5 pM within a 10-cm sediment depth interval. Modeling of these Re porewater profiles with a one-dimensional transport-reaction equation indicates that Re is removed from porewater within this depth interval. Based on thermodynamic predictions of Re speciation and of saturation states and on comparison of these predictions with sulfide porewater profiles, we infer that Re is removed from porewater by precipitation of rheniite (ReS2(s)). The rate constant for the formation of ReS2(s) in sediments is estimated from the modeling exercise to be 0.51 ± 0.64 × 10−21 mol cm−3 s−1. Accumulation of sedimentary Re shows a strong authigenic component, as in anoxic marine sediments. Sharp increases in solid-phase Re during the last century are attributed to atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic Re deriving from coal burning and nearby smelter emissions.  相似文献

The alluvial aquifer of the Alto Guadalquivir River is one of the most important shallow aquifers in Jaén, Spain. It is located in the central-eastern part of the province, and its groundwater resources are used mainly for crop irrigation in an agriculture-dominated area. Hydrochemical and water-quality data obtained through a 2-year sampling (2004–2006) and analysis program indicate that nitrate pollution is a serious problem affecting groundwater due to the use of nitrogen (N)-fertilizers in agriculture. During the study, 231 water samples were collected from wells and springs to determine water chemistry and the extent of nitrate pollution. The concentration of nitrate in groundwater ranged from 1.25 to 320.88 mg/l. Considerable seasonal fluctuations in groundwater quality were observed as a consequence of agricultural practices and other factors such as annual rainfall distribution and the Guadalquivir River flow regime. The chemical composition of the water is not only influenced by agricultural practices, but also by interaction with the alluvial sediments. The dissolution of evaporites accounts for part of the Na+, K+, Cl, SO4 2−, Mg2+, and Ca2+, but other processes, such as calcite precipitation and dedolomitization, also contribute to groundwater chemistry.  相似文献

Sediment macropores (with effective diameters larger than 100 μm) comprise 11% of the bulk sediment volume in a tidal freshwater wetland vegetated withPeltandra virginica. In order to determine effects of macroporous sediment structure on solute transport, we conducted a solute tracer experiment in the sediment. The effective transport volume (θeff, the volume of sediment through which solute was transported normalized to sediment bulk volume) was 0.15 cm3 cm?3, which is considerably smaller than the total pore space that is potentially available for transport (porosity of sediment is 0.63 cm3 cm?3). A mean transport time of 13 d was required to flush preferential flow paths inPeltandra hummocks; hydrologic turnover of the volumetrically dominant matrix pores (0.53 cm3 cm?3) was apparently much slower. Based on porewater sampler design and hydrological principles, we suggest that N2-purged tension solution samplers and diffusion equilibrators preferentially sample porewater from macropore and matrix domains, respectively. Dissolved ammonium and orthophosphate concentrations were three-fold higher in matrix pores compared to macropores, which is consistent with our finding that more rapid hydrological flushing occurred in macropores compared to matrix pores. Further evaluation of porewater sampler designs in macroporous sediment is needed to improve studies of hydrologic transport and biogeochemical cycling in wetlands.  相似文献

Despite reduced anthropogenic deposition during the last decades, deposition sulphate may still play an important role in the biogeochemical cycles of S and many catchments may act as net sources of S that may remain for several decades. The aim of this study is to elucidate the temporal and spatial dynamics of both SO42− and δ34SSO4 in stream water from catchments with varying percentage of wetland and forest coverage and to determine their relative importance for catchment losses of S. Stream water samples were collected from 15 subcatchments ranging in size from 3 to 6780 ha, in a boreal stream network, northern Sweden. In forested catchments (<2% wetland cover) S-SO42− concentrations in stream water averaged 1.7 mg L−1 whereas in wetland dominated catchments (>30% wetland cover) the concentrations averaged 0.3 mg L−1. A significant negative relationship was observed between S-SO42− and percentage wetland coverage (r2 = 0.77, p < 0.001) and the annual export of stream water SO42− and wetland coverage (r2 = 0.76, p < 0.001). The percentage forest coverage was on the other hand positively related to stream water SO42− concentrations and the annual export of stream water SO42− (r2 = 0.77 and r2 = 0.79, respectively). The annual average δ34SSO4 value in wetland dominated streams was +7.6‰ and in streams of forested catchments +6.7‰. At spring flood the δ34SSO4 values decreased in all streams by 1‰ to 5‰. The δ34SSO4 values in all streams were higher than the δ34SSO4 value of +4.7‰ in precipitation (snow). The export of S ranged from 0.5 kg S ha−1 yr−1 (wetland headwater stream) to 3.8 kg S ha−1 yr−1 (forested headwater stream). With an average S deposition in open field of 1.3 kg S ha−1 yr−1 (2002-2006) the mass balance results in a net export of S from all catchments, except in catchments with >30% wetland. The high temporal and spatial resolution of this study demonstrates that the reducing environments of wetlands play a key role for the biogeochemistry of S in boreal landscapes and are net sinks of S. Forested areas, on the other hand were net sources of S.  相似文献

We used fine-scale porewater profiles and rate measurements together with a multiple component transport–reaction model to investigate carbon degradation pathways and the coupling between electron and proton transfer reactions in Lake Champlain sediments. We measured porewater profiles of O2, Mn2+, Fe2+, HS, pH and pCO2 at mm resolution by microelectrodes, and profiles of NO3 , SO4 2−, NH4 +, total inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) at cm resolution using standard wet chemical techniques. In addition, sediment–water fluxes of oxygen, DIC, nitrate, ammonium and N2 were measured. Rates of gross and net sulfate reduction were also measured in the sediments. It is shown that organic matter (OM) decomposes via six pathways: oxic respiration (35.2%), denitrification (10.4%), MnO2 reduction (3.6%), FeOOH reduction (9.6%), sulfate reduction (14.9%), and methanogenesis (26.4%). In the lake sediments, about half of the benthic O2 flux is used for aerobic respiration, and the rest is used for the regeneration of other electron acceptors produced during the above diagenetic reactions. There is a strong coupling between O2 usage and Mn2+ oxidation. MnO2 is also an important player in Fe and S cycles and in pH and TA balance. Although nitrate concentrations in the overlying water were low, denitrification becomes a quantitatively important pathway for OM decomposition due to the oxidation of NH4 + to NO3 . Finally, despite its low concentration in freshwater, sulfate is an important electron acceptor due to its high efficiency of internal cycling. This paper also discusses quantitatively the relationship between redox reactions and the porewater pH values. It is demonstrated here that pH and pCO2 are sensitive variables that reflect various oxidation and precipitation reactions in porewater, while DIC and TA profiles provide effective constraints on the rates of various diagenetic reactions.  相似文献

The change in groundwater chemistry along the groundwater flow path in the Matsumoto tunnel vicinity was studied, and the origin of the groundwater and dissoluted substances was determined. The relationship between the concentration of HCO3 , Ca2+, and Na+, and CO2 gas pressure in the groundwater indicated that the HCO3 , Ca2+, and Na+ were produced by the reaction of the CO2 gas in the groundwater and feldspar in the rocks. The relationship between the concentration of NO3 and the Eh and pH values in the groundwater indicated that in an oxidative condition, ammonia-oxidizing and nitriteoxidizing bacteria used NH4 + and produced NO3 and H+, and in a reductive condition, denitrifying bacteria used NO3 and produced N2 gas and OH. The stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopic ratio in the groundwater and precipitation indicated that the groundwater originated from precipitation that had fallen on the area. The concentration of3H and the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopic ratios in the groundwater suggested that it has been getting warmer climatically for more than 60 years. The stable carbon isotopic ratio indicated that the HCO3 in the groundwater, excluding deep well water, originated from CO2 gas produced by organic matter in the soil. The deep well water, which had a higher concentration of HCO3 than the other groundwater sampled, was thought to have acquired HCO3 though contact with rocks. The36Cl/Cl ratio indicated the recharge age of the deep well water sampled at a depth of 760 m at the foot of the plateau was recent.  相似文献

The Palinuro volcanic complex and the Panarea hydrothermal field, both located in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy), are associated with island arc magmatism and characterized by polymetallic sulfide mineralization. Dissolved sulfide concentrations, pH, and Eh measured in porewaters at both sites reveal a variable hydrothermal influence on porewater chemistry.Multiple sulfur isotopic measurements for disseminated sulfides (CRS: chromium reducible sulfur) extracted from sediments at Palinuro yielded a broad range in δ34S range between ?29.8 and + 10.2‰ and Δ33S values between + 0.015 and + 0.134‰. In contrast, sediments at Panarea exhibit a much smaller range in δ34SCRS with less negative values between ?11.3 and ?1.8‰. The sulfur isotope signatures are interpreted to reflect a mixture between hydrothermal and biogenic sulfide, with a more substantial biogenic contribution at Panarea.Multiple sulfur isotope measurements were performed on sulfides and elemental sulfur from drill core material from the Palinuro massive sulfide complex. δ34S and Δ33S values for pyrite between ?32.8 and ?1.1‰ and between ?0.012 to + 0.042‰, respectively, as well as for elemental sulfur with δ34S and Δ33S values between ?26.7 and ?2.1‰ and between + 0.035 and + 0.109‰, respectively, point to a microbial origin for much of the sulfide and elemental sulfur studied. Moreover, data suggest a coupling of bacterial sulfate reduction, sulfide oxidation and sulfur disproportionation. In addition, δ34S values for barite between + 25.0 and + 63.6‰ are also in agreement with high microbial turnover of sulfate at Palinuro.Although a magmatic SO2 contribution towards the formation of the Palinuro massive sulfide complex is very likely, the activity of different sulfur utilizing microorganisms played a fundamental role during its formation. Thus, porewater and multiple sulfur isotope data reveal differences in the hydrothermal activity at Palinuro and Panarea drill sites and underline the importance of microbial communities for the origin of massive sulfide mineralizations in the hydrothermal subsurface.  相似文献

Iron monosulfide formation and oxidation processes were studied in the extensively drained acid sulfate soil environment of the Tweed River floodplain in eastern Australia. Porewater profiles of pH, Eh, SO42−, Fe2+, Fe3+, Cl, HCO3, and metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) were obtained using in situ dialysis membrane samplers (`peepers'). Concentrations of acid volatile S (AVS), pyrite, total S, reactive Fe, total and organic C, simultaneously extracted metals (SEMs) and total elemental composition by X-ray fluorescence, were determined on sediment samples. The oxidation of pyrite in the surrounding landscape provides a source of acidity, Fe, Al, SO4 and metals, which are exported into the drainage system where they accumulate in the sediments and porewaters. Negative porewater concentration gradients of SO42− and Fe2+, and large AVS concentrations in the sediments, indicate Fe monosulfides form rapidly under reducing conditions and consume acidity and metals. Oxidation of the sediments during previous drought episodes has resulted in the conversion of monosulfides and pyrite to oxidised Fe minerals and the release of acidity, SO42−, Fe3+, and metals to the surface waters. These formation and oxidation cycles show that Fe monosulfides play an important role in controlling water quality in the drainage system.  相似文献

Monitoring wells are often installed in aquitards to verify effectiveness for preventing migration of surface contaminants to underlying aquifers. However, water sampling of aquitard wells presents a challenge due to the slow recovery times for water recharging the wells, which can take as long as weeks, months or years to recharge depending on the sample volume needed. In this study, downhole profiling and sampling of aquitard wells was used to assess geochemical changes that occur in aquitard wells during water level recovery. Wells were sampled on three occasions spanning 11 years, 1 year and 1 week after they were purged and casing water showed substantial water chemistry variations. Temperature decreased with depth, whereas pH and specific conductance increased with depth in the water column after 11 years of water level recovery. Less stable parameters such as dissolved O2 (DO) and Eh showed strong zonation in the well column, with DO stratification occurring as the groundwater slowly entered the well. Oxidation of reduced till groundwater along with degassing of CO2 from till pore water affects mineral solubility and dissolved solid concentrations. Recommendations for sampling slowly recovering aquitard wells include identifying the zone of DO and Eh stratification in the well column and collecting water samples from below the boundary to better measure unstable geochemical parameters.  相似文献

Study on geochemistry of groundwater occurring at different depths is rarely attempted due to inherent difficulties in sample isolation and lack of significant species variations. Three-dimensional (spatial, temporal and depth-wise) evaluation of water chemistry variations would give holistic picture of aquatic chemistry. In order to fill the knowledge gap the vertical hydrogeochemistry of Penna-Chitravati inter-stream sub-basin is studied.Water samples are segregated into different groups based on water levels of source wells. The group samples pertaining to granite terrain (A to C) does not show much variation for tested parameters as most of the samples fall within 20m water level. In shale aquifers groundwater is progressively less ionized as depth to levels increases (Group D to G). Reduction of EC and Na-Cl along with falling water levels indicates deeper aquifers are free from contamination. Gradual decrease in HCO 3 - with depth substantiates that deeper aquifers are getting less fresh water due to lack of inter connectivity in shale formations. Sodium in groundwater of both the granite and shale aquifers is contributed by weathering of silicate rocks as the Na+/Cl- molar ratio is >1 in many samples. Majority of the samples in both the geological terrains have Ca2+/Mg2+ ratio between 1 to < 2 indicating dolomite dissolution is responsible for Ca2+-Mg2+ contribution. The chemistry of tested water indicate aquifer matrix is responsible for chemical make-up of pore water which was obliterated due to extraneous sources like anthropogenic contamination as Na+, Cl-, NO 3 - and SO 4 2- /HCO 3 - is high in many samples belonging to shallow aquifers. Thermodynamic action in deep aquifers could be responsible for dissimilar water chemistry in aquifers belonging to same geological domain.  相似文献

Monitoring the spatiotemporal changes in wetlands and assessing their causal factors is critical for developing robust strategies for the conservation and restoration of these ecologically important ecosystems. In this study, the spatiotemporal changes in the land cover system within a Himalayan wetland and its catchment were assessed and correlated using a time series of satellite, historical, and field data. Significant changes in the spatial extent, water depth, and the land system of the Hokersar wetland were observed from the spatiotemporal analysis of the data from 1969 to 2008. The wetland area has shrunk from 18.75 km2 in 1969 to 13 km2 in 2008 with drastic reduction in the water depth of the wetland. The marshy lands, habitat of the migratory birds, have shrunk from 16.3 km2 in 1969 to 5.62 km2 in 2008 and have been colonized by various other land cover types. The land system and water extent changes within the wetland were related to the spatiotemporal changes in the land cover and hydrometeorological variables at the catchment scale. Significant changes in the forest cover (88.33–55.78 km2), settlement (4.63–15.35 km2), and water bodies (1.75–0.51 km2) were observed in the catchment. It is concluded that the urbanization, deforestation, changes in the hydrologic and climatic conditions, and other land system changes observed in the catchment are the main causes responsible for the depleting wetland extent, water depth, and biodiversity by adversely influencing the hydrologic erosion and other land surface processes in the catchment. All these causes and effects are manifest in the form of deterioration of the water quality, water quantity, the biodiversity changes, and the decreasing migratory bird population in the wetland.  相似文献

Riparian wetlands have multiple source waters that require understanding to effectively manage water quantity and quality. Source waters were determined in an interception-wetland located a relatively flat clayey till terrain in southern Minnesota. Data loggers were used to measure precipitation, water stage from monitoring wells and a tile-drain outlet. Over 70 oxygen (δ18O), hydrogen (δD) and geochemical water samples were collected from seven locations over different seasons (9 events) from 1996 to 1999. Results indicate the dominant source water input to the wetland was drained shallow groundwater beneath intensively managed cropland (P = 0.000). Evapotranspiration was the dominant export pathway. Nitrate–nitrogen (NO3-N) concentrations significantly decreased (P = 0.000) in the cattail-willow portion of the wetland. Total phosphorous (TP) concentrations were relatively high in the grass portion of the wetland (673 ± 549 μg L−1), and relatively low in the cattail-willow portion of the wetland (139 ± 85 μg L−1) because source waters were low in TP. Overall, the interception-wetland design limited out-of-bank flooding, yet allowed sufficient gradient between the cropland and the wetland outlet to minimize potential crop damage and provide hydraulic storage for nutrient attenuation.  相似文献

Little work has been done on the influence of seiments on the basic chemical composition of overlying water mass. This paper deals with the vertical profile of the basic constituents such as Ca^ ,K^ ,Na^ ,and HCO3^-,as well as of pH in the overlying water mass and sediment porewater of Lake Lugu-a semi-closed,deep lake in Yunnan Province. The reand sediment porewater of Lake Lugu- a semi-closed,deep lake in Yunnan Province. The results revealed that those basic constituents may diffuse and transport from bottom sediments to overlying water mass through porewater. In the paper are also quantitatively evaluated the diffusive fluxes and the extent of their influence on overlying water mass, indicating that the lake sediment-water interface diffusion plays an important role in controlling the basic chemical composition of water in the whole lake.  相似文献

Sediment and its associated pore water were collected from a zoned, freshwater, riparian wetland, located in the Talladega National Forest, northeastern Hale County, Alabama, to study the porewater chemistry and its spatial changes within and between the wetland ecological zones. Obvious changes in pH, Eh and element concentrations were observed between the different wetland ecological zones. Major cations (Ca, Mg, and Na) and trace elements (B, Ba, Sr, and Mn) have very good spatial correlation with Fe and Mn distributions, both in the pore water and the sediment, suggesting that adsorption on, and desorption from, iron and manganese oxyhydroxides are important processes controlling the distributions of these elements in the wetland sediment. However, an equilibrium adsorption model is not able to explain the distribution of trace elements between the pore water and sediment. A redox kinetic model gives similar vertical profiles for iron and the correlated elements as those measured in the field and thus suggests that the relative rates of ferrous iron oxidation and the reductive dissolution of ferric iron in the sediment are important variables determining the distributions of these elements in the wetland pore waters. The in situ redox potential (Eh) in anoxic groundwater with high methane and iron contents (approximately 12.3 and 28.4 mg/L, respectively) was potentiometrically measured to identify the processes that control Eh. The measured Eh ranged from −213 to −187 mV; it had an inverse correlation with the concentration of methane and no correlation with that of iron. The saturation indices indicate that goethite and amorphous FeS were nearly at solubility equilibrium. A comparison of the measured Eh with those calculated for the particular redox pairs indicates that either Fe2+/FeOOH or CH4/CO2, but not sulfur redox pairs, controlled the measured Eh. The inverse relationship between measured Eh and methane concentration suggests possible control of the redox conditions by the CH4/CO2 redox pair. Furthermore, the equilibrium solubility state of goethite, which has higher crystallinity and lower solubility than Fe(OH)3 indicates that the iron reaction was electrochemically irreversible. This further supports the contribution of the CH4/CO2 pair to controlling the measured Eh of groundwater.  相似文献

This study focused on the chemical compositions of the rivers around Yulong Mountain, one of the typical monsoonal temperate glacier regions in China. Water samples were collected from Baishui, Sanshu and Geji hydrological stations around Mt. Yulong during rainy season. The chemical analyses indicated that the river water around Mt. Yulong was characterized by high pH values (>8.0) and EC values varied from 36.4 to 71.7 μS/cm with an average of 52.6 μS/cm. Ca2+ and Mg2+ were the dominant cations, together accounting for about 90 % of the total cations. HCO3 ?, followed by SO4 2?, was the dominant anion. Obvious variations had been perceived during the rainy season. River water chemistry in rainy season was mainly influenced by precipitation and rock weathering. The proportions of Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and SO4 2? from precipitation in river water were 23.44, 9.66, 3.10, 17.81 and 10.48 %, respectively. In addition, the ion characteristics of river water were mainly influenced by carbonate weathering. The human activities should not be ignored though its influence was little.  相似文献
