We have studied running penumbral waves, umbral oscillations, umbral flashes and their interrelations from H observations of a large isolated sunspot. Using a subtraction image processing technique we removed the sharp intensity gradient between the umbra and the penumbra and enhanced the low contrast, fine features. We observed running penumbral waves which started in umbral elements with a size of a few arcseconds, covered the umbra and subsequently propagated through the penumbra. The period of the waves was 190 s and the mean propagation velocity was about 15 km s–1. We detected intense brightenings, located between umbral elements from where waves started, which had the characteristics of umbral flashes. There are indications that umbral flashes are related to the propagation of the waves through the umbra and their coupling. The subtraction images also show considerable fine structure in the chromospheric umbra, with size between 0.3 and 0.8.  相似文献

The size of the hard X-ray source in the Crab Nebula was observed with scintillation counters on board two balloons at a lunar occulatation on 24 January, 1975. The Gaussian width of the source is 34 (+17, –14) and the center thereof is offset from the pulsar by 6±4 at position angle 102°. The observed time profile can also be fitted to an alternative model of two line sources whose intensities are 48% at 11 and 25.5% at 7 on both sides of the pulsar.Paper presented at the COSPAR Symposium on Fast Transients in X- and Gamma-Rays, held at Varna, Bulgaria, 29–31 May, 1975.  相似文献

Preliminary results of a study of photographic and photometric properties of the large-scale ( 3) structure of a sunspot and its surrounding photosphere are given. Stratospheric direct frames of the solar photosphere were used in the study. Isophotes located immediately beyond the outer edge of the penumbra were of an irregular form and reflected bright and dark regions. No presence of either a sunspot bright outer ring or inner ring was detected. The photospheric structure and its behaviour with time were, in fact, unchanged up to the very boundary of the penumbra.A distribution of the smeared intensity in a sunspot has been derived. The mean brightness of the penumbra is I PU 0.62 I and umbra I U < 0.15 I . An analysis of the obtained results allowed us to make a conclusion that the area of the dark penumbral regions exceeds that of the bright penumbral regions, and the condition S BR/S DR < 1 should be fulfilled in the penumbrae of sunspots.  相似文献

Some properties of the photospheric granulation near the centre of the quiet sun have been investigated on the basis of two high-definition Stratoscope photographs. We obtain (1) a number density of 54 granules per 10 × 10, (2) a total number of granules on the whole surface of 6.3 × 106, (3) a mean cell diameter of 1.5 or 1100 km and a mean granule diameter of 1.2 or 850 km, the difference of 250 km being ascribed to the mean width of the dark intergranular lanes, (4) frequency distributions of cell diameters and granule diameters (Figures 1 and 2), and (5) an isophotal map in relative intensity (Figure 3). In general, larger granules are brighter than smaller granules (Figure 4). Cross-section profiles are shown for some granules and intergranular lanes (Figures 5 and 6). These quantities have not yet been corrected for the finite resolution of the telescope.  相似文献

The magnetic field in solar active regions forms a highly structured pattern without an apparent length scale. We study this pattern in detail for a plage and its surroundings observed with the Swedish Solar Observatory on La Palma. The magnetogram has a resolution of about 1/3, after image optimisation. We analysed the geometric properties of isolated patches of magnetic flux. Patches with a linear size up to 3 appear to be statistically self-similar, with a fractal dimension ofD f = 1.54 ± 0.05 for the relation between area and linear size. This value agrees very well with the dimensionD f = 1.56 which is found in percolation theory for clusters of tracers placed randomly on a lattice with a tracer density below a critical threshold. The distribution of observed cluster areas also agrees with that of clusters on such a random lattice. The correspondence between properties of observations and of clusters on randomly filled lattices suggests that- well after emergence - the magnetic flux on the Sun is randomly distributed at least up to sizes of about 3 and possibly larger.  相似文献

The SOUP experiment demonstrated that photospheric surface flows can be measured by correlation tracking of white-light intensity features at high resolution (November et al., 1987). In order to assess the feasibility of this technique with observations made at lower resolution, we have applied it to the same SOUP data artificially degraded, but still free of seeing distortion. Comparison with the velocity structures inferred from the original data shows generally good agreement when the resolution is better than about 2. The radial outflow from a sunspot penumbra, however, can only be seen with resolution of better than 1. With resolution of worse than 2, the inferred velocity fields rapidly lose coherence, while resolution of better than 1 yields little improvement. We conclude that apertures as small as 10–14 cm on a space-based platform will be useful for the measurement of large-scale horizontal motions.  相似文献

The conclusions of the present paper broadly are: (a) The galactic concentration of doubles by comparing the distributions in galactic latitudes 0°<20° and >40° is nearly twice as large as the galactic concentration of stars in general. (b) The astrographic catalogues are not complete in the fainter magnitudes. (c) The large value of the ratioT:O k (observed to optical number of pairs) from Kreiken's formula shows that almost all stars in the group 0<d5 and quite a few in the other two groups, viz., 5<d10 and 10<d15 might be shown true binaries. Consequently, Aitken's working definition of a true binary should be extended if it were to include all true binaries. (d) The doubles are probably stars of Population I. The reduction of observations of the O i 7773 triplet obtained at high spatial resolution (0.5) at two disk positions is described. Two sets of triplet profile data are presented at each disk position. One set represents data taken from 0.5 regions centered on the brightest granules, while the other set represents data taken from 0.5 regions centered on the cooler infalling intergranular material.  相似文献

The Very Large Array (VLA) and the RATAN 600 were used to observe a solar active region on two consecutive days around the time of a partial solar eclipse in July 1990. VLA synthesis maps at 2.0, 3.5, and 6.2 cm wavelength reveal bright (T b = 0.2 – 2.2 × 106 K), compact ( = 10–40) sources above the penumbra of the leading sunspot while maps at 20 cm wavelength reveal an extended ( 4.5) looplike structure (T b 106 K) between the dominant spots. Total flux and brightness temperature spectra of both components were obtained by the RATAN at nine wavelengths between 1.7 and 21 cm. The relatively-flat spectrum of the extended emission is attributed to the optically thin thermal brems Strahlung of electrons trapped in a magnetic loop at coronal temperatures. Step-spectrum sunspot-associated emission is attributed to thermal gyroresonance radiation at different heights along the leg of a loop joining regions of opposite magnetic polarity. Comparisons with predicted distributions of gyroresonance radiation indicate that the compact sunspot-associated sources lie at heights of h = 2500–17500 km above the photosphere. Although potential fields of sufficient strength appear to exist at coronal heights, differences n the observed and predicted brightness distributions suggest some role for non-potential fields or for an inhomogeneous distribution of electron density or temperature above the sunspot.  相似文献

A 3×3 NaI(T1) crystal-photomultiplier assembly with a 4 charged particle anticoincidence shield is used to determine the gamma ray spectrum in the energy region of about 100 keV to 8.5 MeV at a balloon altitude of 4.7 g cm–2 over Hyderabad, India (geomagnetic latitude 8°N). The atmospheric growth curves are used to obtain the contribution of the diffuse cosmic gamma ray flux in the above energy range. The cosmic photon flux thus deduced up to about 8.5 MeV is consistent with a continuation of the power law spectrum observed at energies between 20 and 200 keV with an index of –2.3, and hence contradicts the flattening trend observed in ERS-18 at an energy of a few MeV.Results presented at the IAU/COSPAR symposium No. 55 on X-and Gamma-Ray Astronomy Madrid, 11–13th May, 1972.  相似文献

The characteristics of the Mauna Kea site are reviewed. An extensive site survey by NOAO during 1984–1985 showed that the average seeing was in the 0.4–0.6 range and thatr 0 was approximately 30 cm. An image quality study at the UH 88-inch telescope in 1987 showed the free atmosphere seeing was 0.5 and the boundary layer contributed less than 0.25.Paper presented at the Symposium on the JNLT and Related Engineering Developments, Tokyo, November 29–December 2, 1988.  相似文献

The tenth list of objects from the BIG (Byurakan-IRAS Galaxies) sample, containing 104 galaxies identified with 60 point sources from the IRAS PSC catalog, is introduced. The identifications have been made in the region +69°+73° and 09h50m15h20m with an area of 107 sq.deg. The identified objects include 13 Sy candidates, 5 compact star-formation galaxies, 11 interacting pairs (including 5 merger candidates) and 1 interacting triple system, 5 LSB galaxies, and 5 groups. 21 objects are also identified with radio sources. The optical coordinates, their deviations from the IR coordinates, V stellar magnitudes, morphological types, angular sizes of the central regions, and position angles have been determined. The identified galaxies are of Sa-Sc, SB, and Irr morphological types, the optical stellar magnitudes lie in the range 15m.0-21m.5, and the angular sizes of the central regions lie in the range 3-32. Finding charts from the DSS2 are included for these objects.  相似文献

A linear coronal ray, centered on a large helmet, is prominent in white-light photographs taken at the 1922 eclipse. It extends from near the limb to 4 R , has minimum width 9 arc, and persisted for at least 35 min. Examination reveals that the ray marks the cleavage between the domes of a twin-arch streamer which in turn is associated with two large, distinct chromospheric active regions. The ray is interpreted as the edge-on aspect of a coronal neutral sheet which separates areas of presumed opposite magnetic polarity in the two surface regions.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

In order to test the usual method for correcting sunspot intensity measurements for stray light, we have measured, during the Mercury transit of 1970 May 9, the intensities of Mercury, a sunspot umbra, and the aureole. The direct observations result in Mercury intensities < 0.06 I and aureole intensities <0.01 I . The stray light correction to the spot intensities has been <(0.03 ± 0.01) I . The main contribution to the stray light on the solar disc is shown to be produced by a spread-function with a half width of 10 arc sec. Consequently, for stray light corrections the range R R + + 20 in the aureole has to be measured very precisely; furthermore, a remarkable fraction of the stray light in the center of an umbra originates from the surrounding penumbra.Mitteilungen aus dem Fraunhofer Institut, Nr. 102.  相似文献

On June 9, 1973, a flare associated burst was observed with the NRAO 3-element interferometer at 3.7 and 11.1 cm wavelength. The burst was of gradual rise and fall type. Comparing the fringe amplitudes at 3.7 cm to the visibility computed for model flare regions we found that the precursor data are best fitted by a region of 3 in size while at the time of the peak, the flare appears to have a size of 2. During the post-maximum phase a size of 5 is the best estimate. Similar computations have been done for 11.1 cm data. The peak brightness temperatures are 1.2 × 109 K and 1.65 × 108 K at 3.7 and 11.1 cm respectively. Such high temperatures would imply that a significant fraction of the burst radiation has a non-thermal origin.  相似文献

High-resolution observations of the flare on October 21, 1989 were made with the Domeless Solar Telescope of the Hida Observatory. The following new results have been obtained: (a) during the impulsive phase of the flare, the spectral line asymmetry has spatial fine structures of 1–2; (b) for several points in the flare region the line profile alternatively changes between blue asymmetry and red asymmetry within a few seconds. The Very Large Array was used to observe a multiply-impulsive solar radio burst at several wavelengths near 20 cm. The observations indicate that the impulsive emission was nearly 100% circularly polarized and originated in small regions of 10–20 in size. For one of the impulsive spikes, we find evidence of narrow-band emission that could be attributed to an electron-cyclotron maser. The radio data are also compared with soft X-ray data and interpreted in light of a model in which the coronal plasma is heated by maser burst emission.  相似文献

We compare large-scale filtergrams of a hitherto neglected class 1B flare with previously published vector magnetograms and maps of photospheric longitudinal electric current density (Hagyard et al., 1985). The vector magnetic fields were mapped simultaneously with the eruption of this flare. We find a coincidence, to within the ±2 registration accuracy of the data, between the flare kernels and the locations of maximum shear and of peak values in the longitudinal electric current density. The kernels brighten in a way which implies that the preflare heating and the main release of flare energy are spatially coincident within the limits of resolution (2). A pronounced magnetic shear exists in the vertical direction at the location of the strongest flare kernels. We provide evidence that the electric currents could be maintained by the energy stored in the sheared transverse magnetic field and that the amount of energy released is proportional to the amount stored. These circumstances are consistent with theories in which flares are triggered by plasma instabilities due to surplus electric currents.  相似文献

We scanned the H i L, Mg ii h and k, Ca ii K and H lines simultaneously with the LPSP instrument on OSO-8, to investigate the low and moderate temperature regions of an active region filament. The L line is not reversed except for the innermost position in the prominence. Intensity (k/h), (K/H) ratios are respectively 2 and 1.1, indicating that the Mg ii lines are optically thin, and that Ca ii K is saturated, although not clearly reversed. The results obtained during the second sequence of observations (K saturated before L for example) indicate that within the size of the slit (1 × 10) we are not observing the same emitting features in the different lines.We also observe an important line-of-sight velocity at the outer edge of the feature, increasing outwards from a few km s–1 to 20 km s–1 within 2. Less than half an hour later, this velocity is reduced to 15 km s–1 while the intensities increase. Full width at half maximum intensities for this component indicate turbulence variations from 22 to 30 km s–1. The observed high velocities at the top of the prominence can be compared with radial velocities that Mein (1977) observed in H at the edges of an active filament and interpreted as velocity loops slightly inclined on the axis of the filament.  相似文献

The region around the Herbig Ae/Be star LkH198 was imaged at 10m with the CAMIRAS camera at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the Nordic Optical Telescope. We discovered a deeply embedded companion 6 north of LkH198, which may be responsible for most of the far-infrared emission in the region and for driving the molecular flow. LkH198 appears point-like at our resolution (FWHM 1.3), excluding an extended envelope of transiently heated small grains as the dominant origin of the mid-infrared excess in that star.  相似文献
