Laboratory reared veliger larvae of the common mussel Mytilus edulis were grown for 15 days in filtered seawater containing 10 μg l?1, 1 μg l?1 and 0.1 μg l?1 tributyltin oxide (TBTO), the biocide in recent antifouling paint formulations. No larvae survived longer than 5 days in 10 μg l?1 TBTO or 10 days in 1 μg l?1 TBTO. Approximately half the larvae subjected to 0.1 μg l?1 TBTO were dead by day 15 (approximate 15 day LC50 = 0.1 μg l?1 TBTO) and most of the surviving larvae were moribund and had grown significantly more slowly than controls. It is noted that current recorded levels of TBT at several UK estuarine sites are higher than 0.1 μg l?1 and there has therefore probably been a high mortality of mussel larvae at such sites. The results are discussed in relation to the reported short-term toxicity of organotins to other marine organisms and the value of carrying out longer-term tests at low levels of TBT is pointed out.  相似文献

Crassostrea gigas spat were cultured for 8 weeks in the presence of a mixed algal diet in experimental tanks containing bis (tributyl tin) oxide (TBTO) alone, TBTO and a marine sediment, or a marine sediment alone. Growth measurements taken on a weekly basis showed enhanced weight gain in oysters exposed to nominal 50 and 100 mg l?1 concentrations of marine sediment alone. Spat in low level TBTO treatments (0.15 μg l?1) grew less well than the controls and showed pronounced thickening of the upper shell valve. High levels of TBTO (1.6 μg l?1) severely inhibited oyster growth. Tissue concentrations of TBT compounds were measured at the end of the experiment. Bio-concentration factors of 3000- and 10000-fold were demonstrated for the high and low TBTO treatments respectively.  相似文献

Juvenile Mytilus edulis were exposed to 0.1–10.0 μg TBTO l−1 in flowing raw seawater, and the shell length growth was measured in 24–48 h intervals for 7 days. Significant reductions in length growth rate occurred at ≥0.4 μg TBTO l−1. The relationship between TBTO concentration and growth response is approximately hyperbolic.  相似文献

Samples of seawater from sites along the southwest coast were collected during 1984 and analysed for total tin and organotin by flameless atomic absorption spectro-photometry. Organotin concentrations were below detection limits (0.10 μg l?1 TBTO) at all marina sites, but higher concentrations were found in harbour waters, the highest value being 0.88 μg l?1 TBTO at Plymouth (Sutton harbour). The fact that organotin levels may occasionally exceed some toxicological threshold concentrations suggests that biological water quality may sometimes be depressed.  相似文献

Hatchery produced spat of the Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas were exposed to low levels of bis(tri-n-butyltin)oxide (TBTO) 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, 0.02, and 0.01 μg I−1. Their oxygen consumption, feeding rate, compensation for hypoxia, and growth rate was examined after exposure to TBTO and compared to their performance prior to this. In all cases highly significant relationships between TBTO concentration and the physiological variable in question were observed. Significant effects were found down to levels of 0.05 μg I−1 for oxygen consumption and feeding rate, to 0.02 μg I−1 for growth and to 0.01 μg I−1 for compensation for hypoxia. These levels are far lower than those reported for many UK sites and the results are discussed in relation to the possible environmental impact of the observed effects.  相似文献

The effects of short-term exposure to tetravalent platinum on survival, opercular movement and post-treatment growth of coho salmon fry (Oncorhynchus kisutch) was investigated. Employing a static water acute toxicity bioassay with platinum as PtCl42HCl·6 H2O, at 8.5±0.2°C, and a water hardness of 55.9±3.5 mg l.?1 (as CaCo3), the 24, 48, and 96-h LC50 values were 15.5, 5.2, and 2.5 mg Pt4+ l.?1 respectively.Rates of opercular movement for fish exposed to platinum increased with increasing concentrations to a level of 1.0 mg l.?1. No further significant increases were evident above this level. Hypoactivity of fish exposed to 0.3 mg l.?1 and higher was evident during the acute toxicity bioassay and much of the post-treatment study. Post-treatment rate of growth for fish exposed to sublethal concentration of platinum for 96 h was less than that of the controls.All organs examined histopathologically were within normal ranges with the exception of the gills and olfactory organ. Lesions in fish exposed to concentration of 0.3 mg l.?1 and higher were characterized by branchial epithelial hypertrophy and hyperplasia, and necrosis of olfactory epithelial cells.  相似文献

Sublethal and lethal effects of biocide Slimicide C-30 on the developmental stages of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis and juvenile and adult mysid Leptomysis mediterranea were studied.Biocide at a concentration as low as 0.02 mg l?1 caused an incipient effect in the embryonic development of mussels where a decreased number of normally developed larvae from eggs was evident. Slimicide C-30 effective concentration (EC 50/96) was 0.07 mg l?1.In the mysids, the median lethal concentration (96 h LC50) was 0.11 mg l?1.Previous incubation of Slimicide C-30 at 38°C affected a small delay in mortality time (LT50) but did not cause marked change in the acute toxicity to mysids.  相似文献

The concentration levels of Cd (25 ng l?1), Cu (0.45 μg l?1), Ni (0.48 μg l?1), Fe (0.2–7.0 μg l?1), Pb (40 ng l?1) and Zn (0.80 μg l?1) have been determined in the Danish Sounds and in the Kattegat. Different sampling techniques have been used and analyses have been carried out separately by two different investigators, both using freon-extraction followed by determination by atomic absorption spectrometry (a.a.s.). Except for iron, found mainly in the particulate phase, the metals are found predominantly in a dissolved and labile (extractable) form. The results are compared with trace metal levels found in the two main water masses entering the Kattegat—the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is a key component of the global carbon cycle, but, to date, large uncertainties still exist on its source and fate in first‐order streams. In a 23 ha rangeland and steep‐slope headwater of South Africa, our aim was to quantify the contribution of overland flow (OF), soil water (SW) and ground water (GW) to DOC fluxes (DOCF), and to interpret the results in terms of DOC sources and fate. The average 2010–2011 DOC concentration (DOCC) at the catchment outlet was 4.7 mg C l?1 with a standard error of ±2.5 mg C l?1, which was significantly lower than in SW (15.2 ± 1.6 mg C l?1) and OF (11.9 ± 0.8 mg C l?1), but higher than in GW (2.3 ± 0.6 mg C l?1). Based on end‐member mixing using Si and Na concentration in the water compartments, the average SW contribution to DOCF was 66.4%, followed by OF (30.0%) and GW (3.6%). The resulting estimated DOCF at the catchment outlet was 8.05 g C m2 y?1. This was much higher than the observed value of 2.80 g C m2 y?1, meaning that 5.25 g C m2 y?1 or 65% of the DOC is lost during its downslope and/or downstream transport to the catchment outlet. Complementary investigations revealed that the DOCC in SW dropped from 15.2 ± 1.6 to 2.6 ± 0.3 mg C l?1 during its downslope transport to the river system, which corresponded to a net loss of 5.10 g C m2 y?1, or 97% of the catchment DOC losses. These results on DOC sources and potential fate in headwaters are expected to improve our understanding of the impact of hydrology on the global C‐cycle. Acute toxicty tests (LT50) of copper or cadmium on the crustacean isopod Idothea baltica demonstrated differences between females, males, and juveniles. Copper appears to be more toxic than cadmium. the effects of chronic exposure to 5 μl−1 and 500 μl−1 copper or cadmium were evaluated from survival, body growth, and sex ratio in the first stages of juveniles development. While in juveniles 500 μl−1 significantly affected body growth, sex ratio, and survival, 5 μl−1 affected only survival. The study of the long-term effects of a pollutant on different demographic parameters in a species can serve to assess a ‘safe’ level of environmental contamination.  相似文献

The effect of short-term exposure to high concentration (mg l.?1) of water soluble fraction of aromatic heating oil on subsequent egg production by the estuarine copepod Eurytemora affinis has been studied in laboratory cultures to investigate possibly sublethal biological effects following exposure to hydrocarbon under an oil spill. Significant reduction in subsequent length of life, total number of eggs produced, mean brood size, and rate of egg production was observed. Exposure to naphthalene alone at 1 mg l.?1 for 24 h produced a significant effect on total fecundity of the females. Ingestion rates were significantly lower when measured in the presence of the water soluble fraction, and also naphthalene alone at mg l.?1 concentrations. Exposure to low-levels (10 and 50 μg l.?1) of 14C-naphthalene alone over a period of ten days produced no significant effect on feeding or reproduction despite the high concentrations of hydrocarbon accumulated during this period. The results are discussed in relation to previous work on the fate of hydrocarbons in planktonic copepods, using 14C-1-naphthalene as a model compound.  相似文献

The concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons in Arctic surface water under the ice north of Svalbard has been determined by fluorescence spectrofluorometry using three different excitation/emission wavelength combinations. With Kuwait crude oil as a reference, the concentration range is 0.1–0.6 μg l?1 crude oil equivalents with respect to light molecular weight components and 0.05–0.2 μg l?1 heavy molecular weight components.  相似文献

The lake without any outlet (11 ha, 55000 m3, zmax 2,25 m) has a weak thermal stratification with maximum surface temperatures of 32.5 °C. The annual variation of temperature and depth of visibility is unimodal, with the maxima or minima in August. Phytoplankton consists mainly of Cyanophyceae. The primary production determined by the light-dark bottle technique (oxygen method) varies in the annual variation between 0.3… 0.5 g m?2 d?1 C (winter) and 3.4… 4.6 g m?2 d?1 C (summer); as the annual means of 1975 and 1976 there were found 1.9 and 2.4 g m?2 d?1 C, resp., gross production at a utilization of 0.42… 2.85% of the radiation energy. The chemism is a well-buffered hydrogen-carbonate water (pH 8.1… 9.0) with 74… 90 mg/1 Na and 20.5… 31.5 mg/1 K and with a good nutrient supply (20… 40 μg/1 PO4—P and 100… 240 μg/1 NO3—N) at the same time.  相似文献

The behaviour of the detergent builder nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) has been studied in the presence of a marine bacterial population potentially associated with a sewage discharge to coastal waters. Additions of 500 μg l?1 NTA were made over a period of 80 days and 7500 μg l?1 NTA over 40 days in both aerobic and anoxic environments. It was concluded that NTA was not degraded at either concentration under aerobic or anoxic conditions, despite the presence of a significant bacterial population under aerobic conditions. Possible effects of NTA recalcitrance and its accumulation in coastal marine waters are discussed.  相似文献

Pre-exposure of marine mussels to low levels of mercury (0.5 μg l?1 and less) enhanced their tolerance to more toxic levels. Seawater mercury concentrations similar to our experimental pre-exposure levels have been reported in mercury-contaminated areas where mussels presently exist. A higher pre-exposure concentration (5 μg l?1) was not effective in inducing enhanced mercury tolerance. The relative effectiveness of pre-exposure concentration in inducing enhanced tolerance was related to induction of mercury-binding proteins, the degree of saturation of mercury on the proteins, and the extent of binding of mercury to other subcellular fractions.  相似文献

Copper is more toxic to all life stages of the copepod Tisbe than cadmium. The most sensitive life stage of Tisbe to both copper and cadmium is the one-day-old nauplius. The resistance of larval stages of Tisbe increases with age (one-day-old nauplii 48h lc50=0.3142 mg Cu l?1. and 0.5384 mg Cd l?1, 0.3415 mg Cu l?1. and 0.645 mg Cd l?1. for five-days-old nauplii and 0.5289 mg Cu l?1. and 0.9061 mg Cd l?1. for ten-days-old nauplii. The two reproductive stages of Tisbe tested (females with ovigerous bands and females bearing the first ovigerous sac) demonstrated an increased sensitivity to metals and proved more sensitive than the ten-days-old copepodids (only females with ovigerous bands had a similar sensitivity to copper with the ten-days-old copepodids).  相似文献

In the dimict lake Arend (5.1 km2, 146 hm3, 49.5 m zmax), nitrogen is production-limiting with concentrations below the detection limit during the production period. Phytoplankton achieves biomasses of up to 18 mg/l fresh matter, essential contributions being made by Aphanizomenon with 2 mg/l and Anabaena with up to 10 mg/l. Nitrogen fixation was measured by the ethine reduction technique (acetylene reduction) during periods of the occurrence of heterocystforming Cyanophyceae and achieved peak values up to 6.59 μg N2 · h?1 · l?1 or 14.87 m?2 · h?1 g N2 · m?2 · h?1. The rates of fixation show a safe correlation with the biomass of heterocyst-containing Cyanophyceae (r = 0.88), their development beginning at values below the N : P-ratio of 2.66.  相似文献

Based on the light-photosynthesis response measurement at leaf level, combined with over-and under-canopy eddy covariance measurements, research on photosynthetic characteristics of single trees and forest canopy was conducted. The relationship between light intensity and photosynthetic rates for leaves and canopy can be well fitted by a non-rectangular hyperbola model. Mongolian oak presented a high light compensation point, L cp (28 μmol·m?2·s?1), a light saturation point L sp (>1800 μmol·m?2·s?1), and a maximal net photosynthetic rate P max (9.96 μmol·m?2·s?1), which suggest that it is a typical heliophilous plant. Mono maple presented the highest apparent quantum efficiency α (0.066) but the lowest, L cp (16 μmol·m?2·s?1), L sp (≈800 μmol·m?2·s?1), and P max (4.51 μmol·m?2·s?1), which suggest that it is heliophilous plant. Korean pine showed the lowest α value but a higher P max, which suggest that it is a semi-heliophilous plant. At the canopy level, the values of both α and P max approached the upper limit of reported values in temperate forests, while L cp was within the lower limit. Canopy photosynthetic characteristics were well consistent with those of leaves. Both showed a high ability to photosynthesize. However, environmental stresses, especially high vapor pressure deficits, could significantly reduce the photosynthetic ability of leaves and canopy.  相似文献

The effects of hypoxia on the larvae of two sub-tidal nassariid gastropods, Nassarius siquijorensis and N. conoidalis were compared so as to understand how the species-specific tolerance to hypoxia might have resulted in changes in the abundance and distribution of these two species in the hypoxic Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong, since the 1980s. Respiration rates of N. siquijorensis and N. conoidalis larvae were reduced at 4.5 mg O2 l−1, or below, as compared with the normoxic control. Significant reduction in swimming velocity was also observed for 10-day old larvae which were exposed to <2.0 mg O2 l−1 for N. siquijorensis and <1.0 mg O2 l−1 for N. conoidalis. The 48 h LC50 values of N. siquijorensis and N. conoidalis larvae were 0.7 and 1.7 mg O2 l−1, respectively. The results suggested that N. siquijorensis are more tolerant to hypoxia than N. conoidalis.  相似文献

A simple weighing method using carbon tetrachloride as solvent was used to survey the dissolved hydrocarbon and tarball levels in the area of the Egyptian Red Sea coast. The area of investigation covers the coastal area from Ras-Gharib down to the port of Qosier during the period from September 1979 to February 1981. This survey confirms the presence of extensive oil pollution in the area, especially at Ras-Gharib and Ras-Shukhair. Minimum concentrations were obtained at Ghardaqa where no dissolved hydrocarbons were detected (i.e. less than 10 μg l?1) in 1979–1980 but an increase to 20 μg l?1 in 1981 was recorded. The high levels of pollution recorded in the southern part of the Gulf of Suez are related to the presence of the offshore oil fields, most of which are located at Ras-Gharib.  相似文献
