Recognition of the eastern (Avalonian) margin of the northern Appalachian orogen as a Late Precambrian microcontinental arc terrane, rather than the opposing passive margin of the Proto-Atlantic (Iapetus) Ocean to that of eastern Laurentia, constituted a fundamental advance in Appalachian geology that profoundly influenced subsequent models for the orogen's plate tectonic evolution. This advance was first clearly articulated by Nick Rast and his students in 1976, who, by correlating rocks of the Avalon Platform with those of the British Midlands, established the Avalonian volcanic belt as a Japan-like microcontinent. Contrary to contemporary views of the Avalon Platform, which favored an extensional, Basin and Range-like setting for its volcanism, Rast argued on the basis of this correlation that the association of Avalonian volcanism with compressional orogeny, widespread calc-alkaline plutonism and, in Angelsey, with blueschists and ophiolitic rocks, indicated a convergent plate margin setting. Rast further proposed that the Avalonian volcanic belt was ensialic, and was bordered to the northwest and southeast by Precambrian oceanic domains. Contemporary reconstructions of the Avalonian and Cadomian belts as fragments of a Cordilleran-like accretionary orogen that developed along an active margin of Neoproterozoic Gondwana owe their origin to these early ideas and, while far removed from the tectonic model that Rast envisaged, are a direct heritage of his recognition of the Avalonian volcanic belt as a microcontinental arc terrane.  相似文献

Through his students, Professor Nick Ambraseys has had a strong impact on the introduction of earthquake engineering practices in Australia, including historical earthquake studies, strong motion instrumentation and analysis, foundation studies including liquefaction, and building code formulation. In Australia the process of upgrading the third and current edition of the earthquake code and hazard map has begun. There are now about 150 digital strong motion recorders installed in cities, on major structures and at Australian National Seismograph Network sites. Three volumes of an isoseismal atlas have been published totalling more than 300 maps, mainly historical earthquakes. Significant progress has been made in paleoseismological studies across the continent, adding to the complexity of the intraplate seismicity model. With time and more installed accelerographs, the peak ground acceleration recorded in Australia has increased from .25 g in 1984 to .5 g in 1988 and 1 g in 1994, all from earthquakes smaller than magnitude 5, supporting Ambraseys contention that PGA alone is not a suitable parameter for a design ground motion.  相似文献

Medical Geology,the emerging discipline that focuses on the health impacts of geologic materials and geologic processes,has its roots in Guizhou Province,China.In the 1980 s Prof.Zheng Baoshan and his students recognized that a large number of people in Guizhou Province had clinical symptoms of arsenic poisoning,fluorine exposure,selenosis,and other diseases caused by exposure to potentially toxic trace elements or due to deficiency of essential elements.Their publications and invitations to scientists to visit the Province ultimately resulted in increased attention to the health impacts of the natural environment and the formation of scientific societies,the publication of at least a dozen books,and thousands of technical articles on what is now called Medical Geology.  相似文献

Water losses due to transpiration and evaporation of intercepted water were measured using a “natural” lysimeter in the Hafren forest of central Wales, and were compared with estimates of potential evaporation calculated from meteorological observations. Given certain assumptions concerning the forest canopy, the lysimeter observations were used to estimate runoff from the experimental catchment of the Upper Severn, within which the lysimeter is sited; this estimate agreed well with observation.  相似文献

Water science data are a valuable asset that both underpins the original research project and bolsters new research questions, particularly in view of the increasingly complex water issues facing Canada and the world. Whilst there is general support for making data more broadly accessible, and a number of water science journals and funding agencies have adopted policies that require researchers to share data in accordance with the findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable (FAIR) principles, there are still questions about effective management of data to protect their usefulness over time. Incorporating data management practices and standards at the outset of a water science research project will enable researchers to efficiently locate, analyse and use data throughout the project lifecycle, and will ensure the data maintain their value after the project has ended. Here, some common misconceptions about data management are highlighted, along with insights and practical advice to assist established and early career water science researchers as they integrate data management best practices and tools into their research. Freely available tools and training opportunities made available in Canada through Global Water Futures, The Gordon Foundation DataStream, the Digital Research Alliance of Canada Portage Network, Compute Canada, and university libraries, among others are compiled. These include webinars, training videos, and individual support for the water science community that together enable researchers to protect their data assets and meet the expectations of journals and funders. The perspectives shared here have been developed as part of the Global Water Futures programme's efforts to improve data management and promote the use of common data practices and standards in the context of water science in Canada. Ten best practices are proposed that may be broadly applicable to other disciplines in the natural sciences and can be adopted and adapted globally.  相似文献

Recent developments in stochastic and statistical methods in hydrology and environmental engineering presented in the upcoming sequence of research papers are evaluated, compared and put into proper perspective. These papers are being published as a memorial to Professor T. E. Unny who was a founding Editor of the journalStochastic Hydrology and Hydraulics. As explained in this introductory paper, other activities that took place to celebrate Professor Unny's lifetime academic accomplishments include an international conference held in his honor at the University of Waterloo in June, 1993 and the publication of a four-volume conference proceedings in 1994.  相似文献

Summary In this article, we have solved the problem of natural convection along a vertical plate with variable temperature and a transverse non-uniform magnetic field. It also represents a unified analysis of the works of other including the present author, on natural convection with or without transverse magnetic field, and with uniform or non-uniform plate temperature.The author is indebted to Prof.K. This article reports on the Special Issue of Earth Surface Processes and Landforms dedicated to planetary dune analogues and the advances that have been made through the integration of remote sensing and terrestrial field data to better model and understand aeolian systems. The 11 articles presented demonstrate a spectrum of analytical techniques that are employed to investigate ripples, dunes, draa and ergs across a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Nine of the papers involve innovative research about aeolian bedforms and processes, while the final two papers are examples of how vast quantities of data may be organized and scrutinized using a GIScience approach. Based on these 11 papers and the many abstracts archived in a series of three planetary dunes workshops at the Lunar Planetary Institute ( http://www.lpi.usra.edu/publications/abstracts.shtml ; LPI Contributions 1403, 1552, and 1673) it is evident that there exists diverse and complementary approaches to the comparative study of landforms and processes for terrestrial and extra‐terrestrial aeolian landscapes that is driven by a vibrant international community of scientists and educators that engage in the cross‐fertilization of ideas. The study of historical earthquakes itself has an interesting history, and Nick Ambraseys figures highly in it. This historiographic tribute relates the pivotal role that he played in the development of the British and Scandinavian Earthquake Archives. Maintaining his academic distance from direct hazard consulting, he nevertheless exerted a significant influence on the scientific conduct of hazard analyses. From the collection of instrumental and macroseismic data to the assignment of magnitudes, the modus operandi which he recommended was followed in pioneering seismic hazard studies in Britain, the North Sea and Norway, during the 1980s. Because of the confidentiality of seismic hazard reports produced for the UK nuclear industry, there is little record in the open seismological literature of the contribution of Nick Ambraseys. As a civil engineer, he had an exceptional interest in the earthquake evidence that could be gleaned from historical documents. An illustrative reference is given to the discovery of fresh evidence from an Aegean earthquake that shows how even the most knowledgeable of earthquake historians can be surprised.  相似文献

Surface waters in western Canada often experience eutrophication-related problems with water quality, specifically high internal phosphorus loading rates and excessive phytoplankton and macrophyte production, that lead to water column anoxia and restricted fisheries habitat. A group of researchers from across Canada were involved for a seven-year period in cooperative programs for surface water quality management in western Canada, based at the University of Alberta. This paper summarises information on two techniques, hypolimnetic oxygenation and lime (Ca2CO3 and Ca(OH)2) application, used in western Canada (specifically, the province of Alberta) to manage eutrophication in standing waters (lakes and reservoirs).  相似文献

1. A light and scanning electron microscopic study of the structure of epilithic diatom communities was carried out at two sites on the River Taff, South Wales, an upstream unpolluted site (Site 1) and a downstream polluted site (Site 2). 2. Community structure at the micro-scale revealed that, although communities at both sites were similar in terms of species present (similarity indices ranging between 0.44 and 0.96), they were very different with respect to their physical structure. 3. The traditional approach in studying epilithic diatom communities ignores information relating to community structure. The combination of light and scanning electron microscopy proved to be most useful for studying the epilithic diatom communities. 4. The examination of community succession on stone substrata showed that communities were highly dynamic on a weekly time scale, which suggests that the “age” of a substratum is a very important determinant of the attaching communities. A change from a prostate, two-dimensional community structure to an erect, three-dimensional community structure, and a shift from the dominance of epilithic diatoms to the dominance of epiphytic diatoms were noted. Such a change was more noticed at the polluted downstream site, possibly due to a higher rate of surface pre-conditioning and biofilm production at this site than at the unpolluted upstream site.  相似文献

“Southern Resident” killer whales include three “pods” (J, K and L) that reside primarily in Puget Sound/Georgia Basin during the spring, summer and fall. This population was listed as “endangered” in the US and Canada following a 20% decline between 1996 and 2001. The current study, using blubber/epidermis biopsy samples, contributes contemporary information about potential factors (i.e., levels of pollutants or changes in diet) that could adversely affect Southern Residents. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes indicated J- and L-pod consumed prey from similar trophic levels in 2004/2006 and also showed no evidence for a large shift in the trophic level of prey consumed by L-pod between 1996 and 2004/2006. ∑PCBs decreased for Southern Residents biopsied in 2004/2006 compared to 1993–1995. Surprisingly, however, a three-year-old male whale (J39) had the highest concentrations of ∑PBDEs, ∑HCHs and HCB. POP ratio differences between J- and L-pod suggested that they occupy different ranges in winter.  相似文献

The “fluid-flow tomography”, an advanced technique for geoelectrical survey based on the conventional mise-à-la-masse measurement, has been developed by Exploration Geophysics Laboratory at the Kyushu University. This technique is proposed to monitor fluid-flow behavior during water injection and production in a geothermal field. However data processing of this technique is very costly. In this light, this paper will discuss the solution to cost reduction by applying a neural network in the data processing. A case study in the Takigami geothermal field in Japan will be used to illustrate this. The achieved neural network in this case study is three-layered and feed-forward. The most successful learning algorithm in this network is the Resilient Propagation (RPROP). Consequently, the study advances the pragmatism of the “fluid-flow tomography” technique which can be widely used for geothermal fields. Accuracy of the solution is then verified by using root mean square (RMS) misfit error as an indicator.  相似文献

Chung Park (1938–2003) was a true pioneer of magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling research. During a short career at Stanford University that began in 1970 and ended in 1981, he wrote seminal papers on several topics. Using ground-based whistler data, he was the first to demonstrate experimentally that day-side upward ion flow from the mid-latitude ionosphere was sufficient to maintain the night-time ionosphere. He made the only measurements to date of longitudinally localized drainage of significant quantities of plasmaspheric plasma into the underlying ionosphere during a period of enhanced convection activity. He pioneered in demonstrating the presence at ionospheric heights of geophysically important electric fields that originate in the troposphere in thunderstorm centers. He cooperated in a unique study of the guidance of whistler-mode waves by field-aligned density irregularities (ducts) in the magnetosphere. Park provided unique observational data on nonlinear wave–particle interaction processes such as: (i) the development of sidebands during the injection of whistler-mode waves from Siple, Antarctica, and (ii) the mysterious whistler precursor phenomenon. Today, in spite of the several decades that have elapsed since his work, Park's early findings remain cornerstones of our understanding of magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling processes. Some of his later studies of non-linear magnetospheric wave–particle interaction phenomena have stirred lively debate, and today remain relevant to a number of topics in space plasma wave research.  相似文献

Crustal earthquakes near Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe fall into two classes, each of which can be subdivided. On the one hand, there are high-frequency events ( 3 Hz) with sharp, well-defined phases, mainly concentrated beneath Ruapehu Crater Lake. Low-frequency events (< 2 Hz), on the other hand, are common at shallower depths under both volcanoes. These are usually emergent multiple events, and are often closely associated with eruptions.The low-frequency events resemble Minakami's B-type and explosion earthquakes, but sometimes occur where no vent exists and rather deeper than his formal definition (< 1 km) permits. More importantly, they lack reliable criteria (wave-form or magnitude differences) to distinguish between his two groups. Whether or not they accompany an eruption (Minakami's definition of explosion earthquake) appears to depend on whether the volcanoes are in a “closed-” or “open-vent” condition. The high-frequency earthquakes are similar in wave-form to Minakami's A-type. However, many at Ruapehu (here designated “roof-rock” earthquakes) originate at shallower depths than the B-type earthquakes, which is contrary to Minakami's definition.Difficulty in applying Minakami's classification rigorously, and the fact that low frequencies may be due to abnormal attenuation of higher frequencies along the path, rather than to their suppression or absence at the source, has led to reclassification of earthquakes near the volcanoes into two broad groups, tectonic and volcanic. The former includes all high-frequency earthquakes, and those discrete events in which dominant low frequencies are due to path effects. The latter includes multiple and emergent events which show evidence of prolonged or repetitive source mechanism. Dominant low frequencies are ascribed to occurrence in heat-weakened material, and high frequencies to instantaneous source mechanisms operating in competent rock. The term volcano-tectonic describes tectonic earthquakes within some arbitrary distance of a volcano.At Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu, volcanic earthquakes accompany explosive, vent-clearing eruptions. Subsequent “open-vent” degassing and ash emission, however, although often powerful and prolonged, usually occurs without earthquakes. Such activity is, however, frequently accompanied by volcanic tremor. At Ruapehu, under “closed-vent” conditions, when lake temperature is low, low-frequency earthquakes up to magnitude ML = 3.4 have occurred without any eruption.Five types of phreatic eruptions are identified at Ruapehu, each having a distinctive seismic pattern. The three most explosive types appear to be generated by a chain reaction process, and all involve flashing of water to steam; the first by failure of the roof, with little precursory seismicity, after a “closed-vent” period, during which lake temperature decreases; the second, after prolonged heating of the lake and much preliminary volcanic tremor, interpreted as due to rising magma; and the third, under “open-vent” conditions in the wake of one of the two preceding types. A fourth probably occurs in wet sediments near the base of the lake, as a result of upward migration of hot gas, and a fifth, aseismic, or accompanied by very weak volcanic tremor, is associated with convective overturn within Crater Lake.  相似文献

It was noticed 60 years ago that at sunrise (i) the ionospheric critical frequency foF2 increases faster in winter than in summer and (ii) the increase begins at a greater solar zenith angle in winter. It was later suggested that this “seasonal sunrise anomaly” is due to a seasonal change of atomic/molecular ratio in the neutral air in the F2-layer. This paper uses the Sheffield University plasmasphere-ionosphere computational model (SUPIM) with the MSIS thermosphere model to examine the relative importance at sunrise of production, loss and diffusion processes, and the effect of neutral air winds. The results show that both (i) and (ii) can be explained in terms of neutral composition changes.  相似文献

Coastal waters comprise only about 15% of the world's ocean area, yet account for nearly half of its primary and secondary production (Wollast 1991). This disparity can in part be traced to anthropogenic nutrient, specifically nitrogen (N), loading. Regionally, N-sensitive coastal waters are experiencing unprecedented nutrient-driven eutophication, deteriorating water quality (i.e. hypoxia, anoxia, toxicity), habitat loss and declines in desirable fish stocks and yields. In most coastal regions externally-supplied “new” nutrient inputs are growing, diversifying and changing as a result of urbanization, industrial and agricultural development. In some cases (e.g. Eastern Europe), declining economic condition shave led to a reversal of this scenario. A need exists to identify key nutrient sources (and changes therein) supporting eutrophication and its socio-economic consequences. While we are addressing and managing terrestrial (i.e. point and non-point source runoff) “new” nutrient inputs, key “out of sight out of mind” anthropogenic nutrient sources and their effects on eutrophication remain poorly understood and managed. These include atmospheric deposition and groundwater, which can account for as much as half the “new” N entering North American (U.S. Atlantic East Coast) and European (Baltic Sea) coastal waters. Here, I will examine these emerging nutrient sources and their roles in shallow coastal biogeochemical and trophodynamics alterations. Technological and conceptual tools and approaches aimed at improving our functional understanding of these and other “new” nutrient-eutrophication interactions are discussed.  相似文献
