We present near-infrared colour–magnitude diagrams and star counts for a number of regions along the Galactic plane. It is shown that along the l =27°, b =0° line of sight there is a feature at 5.7±0.7 kpc with a density of stars at least a factor of 2 and probably more than a factor of 5 times that of the disc at the same position. This feature forms a distinct clump on an H versus J − H diagram and is seen at all longitudes from the bulge to about l =28°, but at no longitude greater than this. The distance to the feature at l =20° is about 0.5 kpc further than at l =27°, and by l =10° it has merged with, or has become, the bulge. Given that at l =27° and l =21° there is also a clustering of very young stars, the only component that can reasonably explain what is seen is a bar with half-length of around 4 kpc and a position angle of about 43°±7°.  相似文献

We analyse a sample of 507 evolved (OH/IR) stars in the region (10°>ℓ>−45°), (| b |<3°). We derive average ages for subsets of this sample, and use those sets as beacons for the evolution of the Galaxy. In the bulge, the oldest OH/IR stars in the plane are 7.5 Gyr (1.3 M), and in the disc 2.7 Gyr (2.3 M). The vertical distribution of almost all AGB stars in the disc is found to be nearly exponential, with scaleheight increasing from 100 pc for stars ≲1 Gyr old to 500 pc for stars ≳5 Gyr old. There may be a small, disjunct population of OH/IR stars. The radial distribution of AGB stars is dictated by the metallicity gradient. Unequivocal morphological evidence is presented for the existence of a central bar, but parameters can be constrained only for a given spatial-density model. Using a variety of indicators, we identify the radii of the inner ultraharmonic (2.5 kpc) and corotation resonance (3.5 kpc). We show that the 3-kpc arm is likely to be an inner ring, as observed in other barred galaxies, by identifying a group of evolved stars that is connected to the 3-kpc H  i filament. Also, using several observed features, we argue that an inner-Lindblad resonance exists, at ∼1–1.5 kpc. The compositions of OH/IR populations within 1 kpc of the Galactic Centre give insight into the bar-driven evolution of the inner regions. We suggest that the bar is ∼8 Gyr old, relatively weak (SAB), and may be in a final stage of its existence.  相似文献

I examine the effectiveness of Kozai oscillations in the centres of galaxies and in particular the Galactic Centre (GC) using standard techniques from celestial mechanics. In particular, I study the effects of a stellar bulge potential and general relativity on Kozai oscillations, which are induced by stellar discs. Löckmann et al. recently suggested that Kozai oscillations induced by the two young massive stellar discs in the GC drive the orbits of the young stars to large eccentricity  ( e ≈ 1)  . If some of these young eccentric stars are in binaries, they would be disrupted near pericentre, leaving one star in a tight orbit around the central supermassive black hole and producing the S-star population. I find that the spherical stellar bulge suppresses Kozai oscillations, when its enclosed mass inside a test body is of the order of the mass in the stellar disc(s). Since the stellar bulge in the GC is much larger than the stellar discs, Kozai oscillations due to the stellar discs are likely suppressed. Whether Kozai oscillations are induced from other non-spherical components to the potential (e.g. a flattened stellar bulge) is yet to be determined.  相似文献

A method based on Lucy's iterative algorithm is developed to invert the equation of stellar statistics for the Galactic bulge and is then applied to the K -band star counts from the Two-Micron Galactic Survey in a number of off-plane regions (10°>| b |>2°, | l |<15°). The top end of the K -band luminosity function is derived and the morphology of the stellar density function is fitted to triaxial ellipsoids, assuming a non-variable luminosity function within the bulge. The results, which have already been outlined by López-Corredoira et al., are shown in this paper with a full explanation of the steps of the inversion: the luminosity function shows a sharp decrease brighter than M K =−8.0  mag when compared with the disc population; the bulge fits triaxial ellipsoids with the major axis in the Galactic plane at an angle with the line of sight to the Galactic centre of 12° in the first quadrant; the axial ratios are 1:0.54:0.33, and the distance of the Sun from the centre of the triaxial ellipsoid is 7860 pc. The major–minor axial ratio of the ellipsoids is found not to be constant, the best fit to the gradient being K z =(8.4±1.7)×exp(− t /(2000±920) pc), where t is the distance along the major axis of the ellipsoid in parsecs. However, the interpretation of this is controversial. An eccentricity of the true density-ellipsoid gradient and a population gradient are two possible explanations. The best fit for the stellar density, for 1300 pc< t <3000 pc, is calculated for both cases, assuming an ellipsoidal distribution with constant axial ratios, and when K z is allowed to vary. From these, the total number of bulge stars is ∼3×1010 or ∼4×1010, respectively.  相似文献

ISOGAL is a survey at 7 and 15 μm with ISOCAM of the inner galactic disk and bulge of our Galaxy. The survey covers ∼ 22 deg2 in selected areas of the centrall = ±30 degree of the inner Galaxy. In this paper, we report the study of a small ISOGAL field in the inner galactic bulge (l = 0°,b = −1°, area = 0.033deg2). Using the multicolor nearinfrared data (IJKs) of DENIS (DEep Near Infrared Southern Sky Survey) and mid-infrared ISOGAL data, we discuss the nature of the ISOGAL sources. The various color-color and color-magnitude diagrams are discussed in the paper. While most of the detected sources are red giants (RGB tip stars), a few of them show an excess in J-Ks and Ks-[15] colors with respect to the red giant sequence. Most of them are probably AGB stars with large mass-loss rates.  相似文献

In this work, a sample of luminous M-type giants in the Baade's Windows towards the inner Galactic bulge is investigated in the near-infrared. The ISOGAL survey at 7 and 15 μm has given information concerning the mass-loss rates of these stars and their variability characteristics have been extracted from the MACHO data base. Most are known to be semi-regular variables (SRVs). Here we discuss how their IJHK S -region colours depend on period and on the presence or absence of mass loss, using results mainly taken from the DENIS and 2MASS surveys.
In order to compare their colours with solar neighbourhood stars, photometric colours on the DENIS, 2MASS and ESO photometric systems have been synthesized for objects in the spectrophotometric atlas of Lançon & Wood. In addition, they have been used to predict the differences in colour indices when stars with strong molecular bands are observed using different photometric systems.
The SRVs are found to inhabit the upper end of the     , K S colour–magnitude diagram, lying just below the Miras. High mass-loss rates are associated with high luminosity. The near-infrared colours of the SRVs increase in a general way with period and are the reddest for stars with significant mass loss. The average colours of Mira variables, whose periods start at around 200 d in the bulge, are bluer than those of the semi-regulars at this period, particularly in     , thanks to the association of deep water vapour bands with large amplitude.  相似文献

Based on the Hipparcos proper motions and available radial velocity data of O-B stars, we have re-examined the local kinematical structure of the young disk population of-1500 O-B stars not including the Gould-belt stars. A systematic warping motion of the stars about the direction to the Galactic center has been reconfirmed. A negative K-term implying a systematic contraction of stars in the solar vicinity has been detected. Two different distance scales are used in order to find out their impact on the kinematical parameters, and we conclude that the adopted distance scale plays an important role in characterizing the kinematical parameters at the present level of the measurement uncertainty.  相似文献

Star clusters are born in a highly compact configuration, typically with radii of less than about 1 pc roughly independently of mass. Since the star formation efficiency is less than 50 per cent by observation and because the residual gas is removed from the embedded cluster, the cluster must expand. In the process of doing so it only retains a fraction f st of its stars. To date there are no observational constraints for f st, although N -body calculations by Kroupa, Aarseth & Hurley suggest it to be about 20–30 per cent for Orion-type clusters. Here we use the data compiled by Testi et al., Testi, Palla & Natta and Testi, Palla & Natta for clusters around young Ae/Be stars and by de Wit et al. and de Wit et al. around young O stars and the study of de Zeeuw et al. of OB associations and combine these measurements with the expected number of stars in clusters with primary Ae/Be and O stars, respectively, using the empirical correlation between maximal stellar mass and star cluster mass of Weidner & Kroupa. We find that   f st < 50  per cent with a decrease to higher cluster masses/more massive primaries. The interpretation would be that cluster formation is very disruptive. It appears that clusters with a birth stellar mass in the range  10–103 M  keep at most 50 per cent of their stars.  相似文献

The detection of microlensing events from stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud and in the Galactic bulge raises important constraints on the distribution of dark matter and on galactic structure, although some events may be the result of a new type of intrinsic variability. When lenses are relatively close to the sources, we predict that chromatic and spectroscopic effects are likely to appear for a significant fraction of the microlensing events. These effects are due to the differential amplification of the limb and the centre of the stellar disc, and present a systematic dependence with wavelength and time that provides an unambiguous signature of a microlensing event (as opposed to a new type of intrinsic stellar variability). We present detailed predictions of the effects, using realistic model atmospheres. The observations of these effects provide a direct constraint on stellar atmospheres, allowing a three-dimensional reconstruction or imaging of its structure, a unique tool with which to test the current models of stellar atmospheres.  相似文献

Microlensing events are usually selected among single-peaked non-repeating light curves in order to avoid confusion with variable stars. However, a microlensing event may exhibit a second microlensing brightening episode when the source or/and the lens is a binary system. A careful analysis of these repeating events provides an independent way to study the statistics of wide binary stars and to detect extrasolar planets. Previous theoretical studies predicted that 0.5–2 per cent of events should repeat due to wide binary lenses. We present a systematic search for such events in about 4000 light curves of microlensing candidates detected by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) towards the Galactic bulge from 1992 to 2007. The search reveals a total of 19 repeating candidates, with six clearly due to a wide binary lens. As a by-product, we find that 64 events (∼2 per cent of the total OGLE-III sample) have been misclassified as microlensing; these misclassified events are mostly nova or other types of eruptive stars. The number and importance of repeating events will increase considerably when the next-generation wide-field microlensing experiments become fully operational in the future.  相似文献

We present a detailed analysis of seven young stars observed with the spectrograph SOPHIE at the Observatoire de Haute‐Provence for which the chemical composition was incomplete or absent in the literature. For five stars, we derived the stellar parameters and chemical compositions using our automatic pipeline optimized for F, G, and K stars, while for the other two stars with high rotational velocity, we derived the stellar parameters by using other information (parallax), and performed a line‐by‐line analysis. Chromospheric emission‐line fluxes from Caii are obtained for all targets. The stellar parameters we derive are generally in good agreement with what is available in the literature. We provide a chemical analysis of two of the stars for the first time. The star HIP 80124 shows a strong Li feature at 670.8 nm implying a high lithium abundance. Its chemical pattern is not consistent with it being a solar sibling, as has been suggested. (© 2015 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In this paper we present numerical results on the decay of small stellar systems under different initial conditions (multiplicity 3 ≤  N  ≤ 10, and various mass spectra, initial velocities and initial configurations). The numerical treatment uses the CHAIN1 code (Mikkola &38; Aarseth). Particular attention is paid to the distribution of high-velocity escapers: we define these as stars with velocity above 30 km s−1. These numerical experiments confirm that small N -body systems are dynamically unstable and produce cascades of escapers in the process of their decay. It is shown that the fraction of stars that escape from small dense stellar systems with an escape velocity greater than 30 km s−1 is ∼1 per cent for all systems treated here. This relatively small fraction must be considered in relation to the rate of star formation in the Galaxy in small groups: this could explain some moderately high-velocity stars observed in the Galactic disc and possibly some young stars with relatively high metallicity in the thick disc.  相似文献

Observations of the Galactic Centre show evidence of disc-like structures of very young stars orbiting the central supermassive black hole within a distance of a few 0.1 pc. While it is widely accepted that about half of the stars form a relatively flat disc rotating clockwise on the sky, there is a substantial ongoing debate on whether there is a second, counter-clockwise disc of stars.
By means of N -body simulations using our bhint code, we show that two highly inclined stellar discs with the observed properties cannot be recognized as two flat circular discs after 5 Myr of mutual interaction. Instead, our calculations predict a significant warping of the two discs, which we show to be apparent among the structures observed in the Galactic Centre. While the high eccentricities of the observed counter-clockwise orbits suggest an eccentric origin of this system, we show the eccentricity distribution in the inner part of the more massive clockwise disc to be perfectly consistent with an initially circular disc in which stellar eccentricities increase due to both non-resonant and resonant relaxation.
We conclude that the relevant question to ask is therefore not whether there are two discs of young stars, but whether there were two such discs to begin with.  相似文献

We present FOcal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph-1 spectra (from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope) of a sample of 34 faint  20.0 < g * < 21.1  A-type stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, with the goal of measuring the velocity dispersion of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in the remote Galactic halo,   R ∼ 80 kpc  . We show that colour selection with  1.08 < u *− g * < 1.40  and  −0.2 < g *− r * < −0.04  minimizes contamination of the sample by less luminous blue stragglers. In classifying the stars we confine our attention to the 20 stars with spectra of signal-to-noise ratio >15 Å−1. Classification produces a sample of eight BHB stars at distances  65–102 kpc  from the Sun (mean 80 kpc), which represents the most distant sample of Galactic stars with measured radial velocities. The dispersion of the measured radial component of the velocity with respect to the centre of the Galaxy is  58 ± 15 km s−1  . This value is anomalously low in comparison with measured values for stars at smaller distances, as well as for satellites at similar distances. Seeking an explanation for the low measured velocity dispersion, further analysis reveals that six of the eight remote BHB stars are plausibly associated with a single orbit. Three previously known outer halo carbon stars also appear to belong to this stream. The velocity dispersion of all nine stars relative to the orbit is only  15 ± 4 km s−1  . Further observations along the orbit are required to trace the full extent of this structure on the sky.  相似文献

The spectral type is a key parameter in calibrating the temperature which is required to estimate the mass of young stars and brown dwarfs. We describe an approach developed to classify low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the Trapezium Cluster using red optical spectra, which can be applied to other star-forming regions. The classification uses two methods for greater accuracy: the use of narrow-band spectral indices which rely on the variation of the strength of molecular lines with spectral type and a comparison with other previously classified young, low-mass objects in the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. We have investigated and compared many different molecular indices and have identified a small number of indices which work well for classifying M-type objects in nebular regions. The indices are calibrated for young, pre-main-sequence objects whose spectra are affected by their lower surface gravities compared with those on the main sequence. Spectral types obtained are essentially independent of both reddening and nebular emission lines.
Confirmation of candidate young stars and brown dwarfs as bona fide cluster members may be accomplished with moderate resolution spectra in the optical region by an analysis of the strength of the gravity-sensitive Na doublet. It has been established that this feature is much weaker in these very young objects than in field dwarfs. A sodium spectral index is used to estimate the surface gravity and to demonstrate quantitatively the difference between young (1–2 Myr) objects, and dwarf and giant field stars.  相似文献

We have calculated the orbital parameters for 90 stars in Chen et al. and updated the kinematic data for stars in Edvardsson et al. by using the accurate Hipparcos parallaxes and proper motions, and recalculated the \\\\\\\\\\\\-element abundances in Edvardsson et al. in a way consistent with Chen et al. The two sets of data are combined in a study of stellar populations and characteristics of F & G stars in the solar neighborhood. We confirm the result of Chen et al. that a distinguishable group of stars may belong to the thick disk rather than the thin disk. The ages for the stars are determined using the theoretical isochrones of VandenBerg et al. The age-metallicity relation is investigated for different subgroups according to distance from the sun and galactic orbital parameters. It is found that a mixing of stars with different orbital parameters significantly affect the age-metallicity relation for the disk. Stars with orbits confined to the solar circle all have metallicities [Fe/H] > -0.3 irresp  相似文献

A by-product of the APM high-redshift quasar survey was the discovery of several distant (20–100 kpc) N-type carbon stars at high galactic latitude. Following on from this, we have started a systematic all-sky survey at galactic latitudes ⊢ b ⊢>30° to find further examples of these rare objects, and we report here on the results from the first season of follow-up spectroscopy. Faint, high-latitude carbon (FHLC) giants make excellent probes of the kinematic structure of the outer Galactic halo. Therefore, in addition to detailed spectrophotometry covering a wide wavelength range, we have obtained high-resolution (∼1 Å) spectra centred on the CN bands at ∼8000 Å, and have derived accurate (≲10 km s−1) radial velocities for the known FHLC stars. From the initial phase of our survey covering ≈6500 deg2, we find a surface density of faint N-type carbon stars in the halo of ≈1 per 200 deg2, roughly a factor of 4 less than the surface density of CH-type carbon stars in the halo. Intermediate-age, N-type carbon stars seem unlikely to have formed in the halo in isolation from other star-forming regions, and one possibility that we are investigating is that they either arise from the disruption of tidally captured dwarf satellite galaxies or are a manifestation of the long-sought optical component of the Magellanic Stream.  相似文献
