The Taiwanese–American Occultation Survey (TAOS) seeks to determinethe number and size spectrum for small (~3 km) bodies in the KuiperBelt. This will be accomplished by searching for the brief occultations of brightstars (R~14) by these objects. We have designed and built a specialpurpose photometric monitoring system for this purpose. TAOS comprisesfour 50 cm telescopes, each equipped with a 2048×2048 pixel CCDcamera, in a compact array located in the central highlands of Taiwan. TAOSwill monitor up to 3,000 stars at 5 Hz. The system will go into scientificoperation at the end of 003.  相似文献

The X-ray Telescope (XRT) aboard the Hinode satellite is a grazing incidence X-ray imager equipped with a 2048×2048 CCD. The XRT has 1 arcsec pixels with a wide field of view of 34×34 arcmin. It is sensitive to plasmas with a wide temperature range from < 1 to 30 MK, allowing us to obtain TRACE-like low-temperature images as well as Yohkoh/SXT-like high-temperature images. The spacecraft Mission Data Processor (MDP) controls the XRT through sequence tables with versatile autonomous functions such as exposure control, region-of-interest tracking, flare detection, and flare location identification. Data are compressed either with DPCM or JPEG, depending on the purpose. This results in higher cadence and/or wider field of view for a given telemetry bandwidth. With a focus adjust mechanism, a higher resolution of Gaussian focus may be available on-axis. This paper follows the first instrument paper for the XRT (Golub et al., Solar Phys. 243, 63, 2007) and discusses the design and measured performance of the X-ray CCD camera for the XRT and its control system with the MDP.  相似文献

A series of subflares in active region NOAA 9077 (July 2000) and in the activity complex NOAA 0039 + NOAA 0050 were investigated. The structure functions and their characteristics for sets of images of active regions in the hydrogen-alpha line (H-line) were calculated. The ranges of the spatial scales of different scaling behavior of the structure functions were revealed. The existence of intermittent turbulence (multi-fractal structure) in active regions of the chromosphere is shown. Peculiarities of the scaling parameters variations of the structure functions at pre-flare stage are investigated. It was found that on average 20 min before a subflare onset considerable deviation of these variations from the mean occurs, which may be of importance for predictions. It was discovered that maximum variations of scaling parameters with an accuracy to 15 min (on average), in a number of cases coincide with variations of the elongated chromospheric structures in an active-region area. We used H_ filtergrams obtained with the chromospheric telescope of the Baikal observatory operated by ISTP SD RAS. The telescope is coupled with a Halle birefringent filter with a 0.05 nm bandpass, and a Princeton Instruments 2048 × 2048 pixel CCD camera with 16-bit amplitude resolution.  相似文献

The space mission COROT (to be launched in 2002) will continuously monitor the flux of a number of stars during 150 days periods with a very high photometric accuracy. One of its objectives is the detection of extra-solar planets by looking for their transits in front of the disk of several tens thousand stars. COROT accommodates a 25 cm telescope with low straylight, and 4 2048×2048 CCDs, 2 of which monitoring 5000 to 12000 stars simultaneously up to mv= 16.5. The stability and noise performances should make easy the detection of Jupiter-like planets and possible the detection of Earth-like planets with radius 1.5R. Under study is a dispersive system that will allow to retrieve some chromatic information : this could be essential to discriminate actual transit events against stellar fluctuations that would mimic a transit and to identify properly the events occurring in binary stars. The mission, the instrument and the results of simulations are presented, together with a discussion on the number of expected events : the multiple ones with a short orbital period signature, or the single or double events identified by their (a)chromatic signature. The later ones may lead to the discovery of planets in the habitable zone.  相似文献

High quality CCD detectors are now being produced with 2048× 4096 square pixels, each 15 m on a side. Evenlarger detector areas are built with several CCDs mounted into amosaic. To be useful in an instrument the light must be in focuson all CCDs, requiring that all CCDs in a mosaic must typicallybe aligned within 30 micron of a flat plane. To achieve thisaccuracy in many cases the measurement and correction of the CCDalignment is necessary. One way allowing a surface measurement, even when the CCD is protected by a window, is to usetriangulation sensor. The principle of a triangulation sensor, its application and its implementation in a measuring machineare presented here.  相似文献

We have searched the rising portion of type I X-ray bursts observed from the Rapid Burster with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer for the presence of periodicities. The 95 per cent confidence upper limit on the average rms variation of near coherent pulsations with a width of ≲1 Hz (in 60–2048 Hz) during the first second of the bursts is <8.8 per cent. We find a possible detection (>98 per cent significance) at 306.5 Hz.  相似文献

CoRoT (Convection, Rotation and Transit) is a mission of high-accuracy photometry with two scientific programmes: asteroseismology and planet finding, using CCDs as detectors. Ten 2048×4096 CCDs manufactured by E2V (42-80) were calibrated on Meudon test bench in order to choose the best ones for flight. A very high instrument stability is needed. Taking into account the environmental perturbations (temperature, attitude control system jitter, radiations, etc.) we studied sensitivity of CCD gain and quantum efficiency to temperature and sensitivity of the output signal to bias voltages. Special attention was paid to pixel capacity and noise sources coming from dark current and pixel response non-uniformity. The calibration results together with the expected voltages and temperature fluctuations are compared with the specifications.  相似文献

ASTRONIRCAM is a cryogenic-cooled slit camera-spectrograph for the spectral range 1–2.5 μm installed at the Nasmyth focus of the 2.5-meter telescope of the Caucasian observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of Lomonosov Moscow State University. The instrument is equipped with a HAWAII-2RG 2048×2048 HgCdTe array. Grisms are used as dispersive elements. In the photometric mode ASTRONIRCAM allows for extended astronomical object imaging in a 4.′6 × 4.′6 field of view with a 0.269 arcsec/pixel scale in standard photometric bands J, H, K, and K s as well as in the narrow-band filters centered on the lines CH4, [Fe II], H2 v=1-0 S(1), Br γ , and CO. In the spectroscopic mode, ASTRONIRCAM takes spectra of extended or point-like sources with a spectral resolution of R = λλ ≤ 1200. The general design, optical system, detector electronics and readout, amplification and digitization schemes are considered. The GAIN conversion factor measurement results are described as well as its dependence on the accumulated signal (nonlinearity). The full transmission of the atmosphere-to-detector train ranges from 40 to 50% in the wide-band photometry mode. The ASTRONIRCAMsensitivity at the 2.5-m telescope is characterized by the limiting J = 20, K = 19 stellar magnitudes measured with a 10% precision and 15 minute integration for 1″ atmospheric seeing conditions. References to the first results based on ASTRONIRCAM observations are given.  相似文献

A new scheme of radiation transfer for understanding the infrared spectra of HII regions, has been developed. This scheme considers non-equilibrium processes (e.g. transient heating of the very small grains, VSG; and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, PAH) also, in addition to the equilibrium thermal emission from normal dust grains (BG). The spherically symmetric interstellar dust cloud is segmented into a large number of “onion skin” shells in order to implement the non-equilibrium processes. The scheme attempts to fit the observed SED originating from the dust component, by exploring the following parameters: (i) geometrical details of the dust cloud, (ii) PAH size and abundance, (iii) composition of normal grains (BG), (iv) radial distribution of all dust (BG, VSG & PAH). The scheme has been applied to a set of five compact H II regions (IRAS 18116 − 1646, 18162 − 2048, 19442 + 2427, 22308 + 5812, and 18434 - 0242) whose spectra are available with adequate spectral resolution. The best fit models and inferences about the parameters for these sources are presented.  相似文献

The vertical profiles of disc galaxies are built by the material trapped around stable periodic orbits, which form their 'skeletons'. Therefore, knowledge of the stability of the main families of periodic orbits in appropriate 3D models enables one to predict possible morphologies for edge-on disc galaxies. In a pilot survey we compare the orbital structures that lead to the appearance of 'peanut'- and 'X'-like features with the edge-on profiles of three disc galaxies (IC 2531, NGC 4013 and UGC 2048). The subtraction from the images of a model representing the axisymmetric component of the galaxies reveals the contribution of the non-axisymmetric terms. We find a direct correspondence between the orbital profiles of 3D bars in models and the observed main morphological features of the residuals. We also apply a simple unsharp masking technique in order to study the sharpest features of the images. Our basic conclusion is that the morphology of the boxy 'bulges' of these galaxies can be explained by considering disc material trapped around stable 3D periodic orbits. In most models, these building-block periodic orbits are bifurcated from the planar central family of a non-axisymmetric component, usually a bar, at low-order vertical resonances. In such a case, the boxy 'bulges' are parts of bars seen edge-on. For the three galaxies we study, the families associated with the 'peanut' or 'X'-shape morphology are probably bifurcations at the vertical 2/1 or 4/1 resonance.  相似文献

We have constructed a large, mosaic CCD camera called MOA-cam2 which has 4096 × 6144-pixelsto search for gravitational microlensing events. MOA-cam2 has three4096 × 2048-pixel SITe CCD chips, which have a very high quantum efficiency (nearly 80% in the wave region 500 to 800 nm),and three buttable sides. We have placed the threechips side by side with 100 m dead space. MOA-cam2 has been installed on the 61 cm Boller and Chivens telescope of the MOA collaboration at the Mt. John University Observatory (MJUO) in NewZealand since July 1998. The field coverage is 0.92° × 1.38° per exposure. The technical details of MOA-cam2 and the first images obtained with the Boller and Chivens telescope are presented. MOA-cam2 introduces a second phase of research on gravitational microlensing by the MOA collaboration.  相似文献

A new, meter-wave radio telescope has been built in the north-east of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, at a latitude of -20.14‡. The Mauritius Radio Telescope (MRT) is a Fourier Synthesis T-shaped array, consisting of a 2048 m long East-West arm and an 880 m long South arm. In the East-West arm 1024 fixed helices are arranged in 32 groups and in the South arm 16 trolleys, with four helices on each, which move on a rail are used. A 512-channel digital complex correlation receiver is used to measure the visibility function. At least 60 days of observing are required for obtaining the visibilities up to 880 m spacing. The Fourier transform of the calibrated visibilities produces a map of the area of the sky under observation with a synthesized beam width 4′ × 4.6′ sec(δ + 20.14‡) at 151.5 MHz. The primary objective of the telescope is to produce a sky survey in the declination range –70‡ to –10‡ with a point source sensitivity of about 200 mJy (3a level). This will be the southern sky equivalent of the Cambridge 6C survey. In this paper we describe the telescope, discuss the array design and the calibration techniques used, and present a map made using the telescope.  相似文献

The Mauritius Radio Telescope (MRT) has been built with the main objective of surveying the southern sky at meter wavelengths. MRT is a Fourier synthesis, T-shaped non-coplanar array. It consists of a2048 m long East-West arm with 1024 fixed helices and a 880 m long South arm with 15 trolleys. Each trolley has four helices. A 512 channel, 2-bit 3-level complex correlation receiver is used to process the data from the EW and S group outputs. At least 60 days of observing are required for obtaining the Fourier components of the brightness distribution of the sky required to complete the survey. The MRT survey will be one of the most extensive survey at low frequencies providing a moderately deep radio catalog reaching a source density of about 2 × 104 sr-1 over most of the sky south of δ=-10°with an angular resolution of 4' × 4.6' sec (δ) and a limiting flux density of 200 mJy (3 σ level) at 151 MHz. This paper will describe the telescope, the observations carried out so far, challenges of imaging with the data acquired over a period exceeding four years with a non-coplanar array, and summarises the results obtained so far. SARG is a cross dispersed echelle spectrograph in operation since late spring 2000 at the Italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) 3.5 m telescope, La Palma. SARG offers both single object and long slit (up to 26 arcsec) observing modes covering a spectral range from λ = 0.37 up to1 μm, with resolution ranging from R = 29,000 up to R = 164,000. Cross dispersion is provided by means of a selection of four grisms; interference filters may be used for the long slit mode (up to 26 arcsec). A dioptric camera images the cross dispersed spectra onto a mosaic of two 2048 × 4096 EEV CCDs (pixel size: 13.5 μm) allowing complete spectral coverage at all resolving power for λ < 0.8 μm. In order to reach a high wavelength calibration precision an iodine-absorbing cell is provided. A Distributed Active Temperature Control System (DATCS) maintains constant the temperature of all spectrograph components at a preset value. Early results show that SARG works according to original specifications in terms of wavelength coverage, efficiency (measured peak efficiency is about 13%),resolution (maximum resolution R = 164,000 using a 0.3 arcsec slit, R ∼144,000 using an image slicer), and stability (preliminary estimates of radial velocity accuracy is ∼3 m/s using the iodine cell and ±150 m/s without the iodine cell). This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Near-photospheric flow fields on the Sun are deduced using two independent methods applied to the same time series of velocity images observed by SOI-MDI on SOHO. Differences in travel times between f modes entering and leaving each pixel measured using time-distance helioseismology are used to determine sites of supergranular outflows. Alternatively, correlation tracking analysis of mesogranular scales of motion applied to the same time series is used to deduce the near-surface flow field. These two approaches provide the means to assess the patterns and evolution of horizontal flows on supergranular scales even near disk center, which is not feasible with direct line-of-sight Doppler measurements. We find that the locations of the supergranular outflows seen in flow fields generated from correlation tracking coincide well with the locations of the outflows determined from the time-distance analysis, with a mean correlation coefficient after smoothing of s=0.890. Near-surface velocity field measurements can be used to study the evolution of the supergranular network, as merging and splitting events are observed to occur in these images. The data consist of one 2048-min time series of high-resolution (0.6 pixels) line-of-sight velocity images taken by MDI on 1997 January 16–18 at a cadence of one minute.  相似文献

We present measurements of the altitude and eastward velocity component of mesospheric clouds in 35 imaging sequences acquired by the Mars Odyssey (ODY) spacecraft’s Thermal Emission Imaging System visible imaging subsystem (THEMIS-VIS). We measure altitude by using the parallax drift of high-altitude features, and the velocity by exploiting the time delay in the THEMIS-VIS imaging sequence. We observe two distinct classes of mesospheric clouds: equatorial mesospheric clouds observed between 0° and 180° Ls; and northern mid-latitude clouds observed only in twilight in the 200–300° Ls period. The equatorial mesospheric clouds are quite rare in the THEMIS-VIS data set. We have detected them in only five imaging sequences, out of a total of 2048 multi-band equatorial imaging sequences. All five fall between 20° south and 0° latitude, and between 260° and 295° east longitude. The mid-latitude mesospheric clouds are apparently much more common; for these we find 30 examples out of 210 northern winter mid-latitude twilight imaging sequences. The observed mid-latitude clouds are found, with only one exception, in the Acidalia region, but this is quite likely an artifact of the pattern of THEMIS-VIS image targeting. Comparing our THEMIS-VIS images with daily global maps generated from Mars Orbiter Camera Wide Angle (MOC-WA) images, we find some evidence that some mid-latitude mesospheric cloud features correspond to cloud features commonly observed by MOC-WA. Comparing the velocity of our mesospheric clouds with a GCM, we find good agreement for the northern mid-latitude class, but also find that the GCM fails to match the strong easterly winds measured for the equatorial clouds.Applying a simple radiative transfer model to some of the equatorial mesospheric clouds, we find good model fits in two different imaging sequences. By using the observed radiance contrast between cloud and cloud-free regions at multiple visible-band wavelengths, these fits simultaneously constrain the optical depths and particles sizes of the clouds. The particle sizes are constrained primarily by the relative contrasts at the available wavelengths, and are found to be quite different in the two imaging sequences: reff = 0.1 μm and reff = 1.5 μm. The optical depths (constrained by the absolute contrasts) are substantial: 0.22 and 0.5, respectively. These optical depths imply a mass density that greatly exceeds the saturated mass density of water vapor at mesospheric temperatures, and so the aerosol particles are probably composed mainly of CO2 ice. Our simple radiative transfer model is not applicable to twilight, when the mid-latitude mesospheric clouds were observed, and so we leave the properties of these clouds as a question for further work.  相似文献

Several metric spaces of Keplerian orbits and a set of their most important subspaces, as well as a factor space (not distinguishing orbits with the same longitudes of nodes and pericentres) are constructed. Topological and metric properties of them are established. Simple formulae to calculate the distance are deduced. Applications to a number of problems of Celestial Mechanics are discussed.  相似文献

The distribution function of quasars with respect to apparent brightness is given, found under the assumption that quasars are, at least partially, the gravitationally enhanced images of the active nuclei of distant galaxies. A Schechter law and a two-power law for the luminosity function of the sources are used, as well as a probabilistic law of image enhancement for various models of gravitational lenses. To find the theoretical distribution function of quasars with respect to apparent brightness we use a theorem on the probability density of a product of random quantities. It is shown that the slope of this function ranges from -1 to -2 for faint quasars, like that for ordinary galaxies. In the case of bright quasars, the slope of the apparent brightness distribution function is determined mainly by the lensing effect and has a lower limit of -3. The good agreement between theory and observations suggests that statistically quasars are gravitationally enhanced images of the active nuclei of distant galaxies. If the initial assumptions are correct, then the luminosity function of galaxies and the apparent brightness function for quasars are not independent but are related by means of the differential lensing probability.  相似文献
