A technique for determining the effective temperature T eff and the acceleration of gravity log g of F and G supergiants is discussed using four bright stars as examples, specifically two F supergiants, α Lep(F0 Ib) and π Sgr (F2 II), and two G supergiants, β Aqr (G0 Ib) and α Aqr (G2 Ib). In all four cases the parameter log g was derived from the high precision parallaxes recently obtained by van Leeuwen in a new reduction of data from Hipparcos. Because of this, the accuracy of the determinations of log g is much greater than before. Estimates of the parameter T eff were checked using accurate values of T eff obtained previously by the infrared flux method (IRFM). In the case of the early F supergiants, this method confirms the good accuracy of the T eff values derived from the Balmer lines and the β-index. Measurements of the Balmer lines for the G supergiants are difficult because of strong blending, so the indices [c 1] and β serve as indicators of T eff . It is shown that the indices [c 1] and β yield a systematic difference in the values of T eff ; the IRFM confirms that deriving T eff from the index [c 1] is more accurate. Based on the values of T eff and log g that have been found here, with the aid of the evolutionary tracks, we estimate the mass M and age t of each star. The Fe II lines, which are insensitive to departures from LTE, have been used to determine the microturbulence parameter V t and the iron abundance. The latter is close to the solar iron abundance. Some problems concerning the chemical composition of these stars are discussed using the supergiant α Lep as an example. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 52, No. 2, pp. 237–257 (May 2009).  相似文献

We used high-resolution echelle spectra with high signal-to-noise ratio to determine with a high degree of accuracy some atmospheric parameters (T eff, log g and [Fe/H]) for 68 non-variable supergiants of types F, G, and K and 26 classical Cepheids in 302 pulsation phases. Very accurate effective temperatures, with errors of only 10–30 K, were determined by the line-depth ratio method. We found that the observed intrinsic color indices (B ? V)0 can be related to these parameters: (B ? V)0 = 57.984? 10.3587(log T eff)2 + 1.67572(log T eff)3 ? 3.356 log g+ 0.321 V t + 0.2615[Fe/H] + 0.8833log g(log T eff). With this empirical relation, the intrinsic colors of individual supergiants and classical Cepheids of spectral types F0-K0 and of luminosity classes I and II can be estimated with an accuracy as high as 0.05 m , which is comparable to the accuracy of the most elaborate photometric procedures. In view of large distances to supergiants, the method we propose here allows a large-scale mapping of interstellar extinction with an accuracy of 0.1–0.2 m in a quite large region of the Galaxy.  相似文献

Excitation of radial oscillations in population I (X = 0.7, Z = 0.02) red supergiants is investigated using the solution of the equations of radiation hydrodynamics and turbulent convection. The core helium burning stars with masses 8M M ≤ 20M and effective temperatures T eff < 4000 K are shown to be unstable against radial pulsations in the fundamental mode. The oscillation periods range between 45 and 1180 days. The pulsational instability is due to the κ-mechanism in the hydrogen and heliumionization zones. Radial pulsations of stars with mass M < 15M are strictly periodic with the light amplitude ΔM bol ≤ 0?5. The pulsation amplitude increases with increasing stellar mass and for M > 15M the maximum expansion velocity of outer layers is as high as one third of the escape velocity. The mean radii of outer Lagrangean mass zones increase due to nonlinear oscillations by ≤30% in comparison with the initial equilibrium. The approximate method (with uncertainty of a factor of 1.5) to evaluate the mass of the pulsating red supergiant with the known period of radial oscillations is proposed. The approximation of the pulsation constant Q as a function of the mass-to-radius ratio is given. Masses of seven galactic red supergiants are evaluated using the period-mean density relation.  相似文献

According to the result of the numerical simulation on stellar convective envelopes by the traditional mixing length theory, supersonic convection would occur on the top of the convective regions of the yellow-and-red giants and supergiants. This, however, is not self-consistent with the local convection theory itself. This paper is devoted to analyze in details the origin of supersonic convection, and at the same time to present a plot of the supersonic convection region on the H-R diagram based on the evolutionary track of population I stars. The main results of this paper are as follows: in the process of evolution, (1) no supersonic convection occurs in low-mass stars; (2) for intermediate-mass stars, because of the ionization of hydrogen, the supersonic convection occurs chiefly in the region of 3.6< lgTe <4.0, tilting from the lower left to the upper right on the H-R diagram and extending to the region of red giants for relatively massive stars; (3) for massive stars, the supersonic convection occurs after they deviate from ZAMS, the greater the stellar mass is, the earlier the supersonic convection emerges. For blue supergiants, the supersonic convection occurs at the absorbtion peak (lg T ∼5.3) of Fe and in the secondary ionization region of helium, but for the red- and yellow-giants and supergiants, it occurs in the ionization region of hydrogen.  相似文献

Based on archived images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, stellar photometry for 105 irregular galaxies has been conducted. We have shown the red supergiant and giant branches in the obtained Hertzsprung-Russel diagrams. Using the TRGB method, distances to galaxies and metallicity of red giants have been determined. The color index (V ? I) of the supergiant branch at the luminosity level MI = ?7 was chosen as the metallicity index of red supergiants. For the galaxies under study, the diagrams have been built, in which the correlation can be seen between the luminosity of galaxies (MB) and metallicity of red giants and supergiants. The main source of variance of the results in the obtained diagrams is, in our opinion, uncertainty inmeasurements of galaxy luminosities and star-forming outburst. The relation between metallicity of young and old stars shows that main enrichment of galaxies with metals has taken place in the remote past. Deviations of some galaxies in the obtained relation can possibly be explained with the fall of the intergalactic gas on them, although, this inconsiderably affects metallicities of the stellar content.  相似文献

Strömgren uvby photometry has been observed for an additional 140 very metal-poor stars from the survey of Beers et al. (1992). These Galactic stars of very-low metallicity provide crucial information for the investigation of the formation and evolution of the Galaxy, as well as on the nature of the early Universe. The Strömgren uvby-β system allows the measurement of stellar atmospheric parameters as a prelude to detailed abundance studies which will make use of high-resolution spectroscopy and the new generation of large telescopes. The photometric techniques developed by Schuster et al. (1996) are used not only to classify these very metal-poor stars but also to derive effective temperatures, surface gravities, and improved estimates for their interstellar reddenings. In particular, photometric diagrams such as [c 1], [m 1] and c 0, (b-y)0 are used to classify these stars, especially those near the main-sequence turnoff, where contamination from slightly-evolved subgiants, lower surface-gravity horizontal-branch stars, and even a few supergiant or AGB candidates is found.  相似文献

We calculated 240 model atmospheres of carbon giants with high carbon abundance (2800 K ≤ T eff ≤ 3400 K, 0.06 ≤ log(C/O) ≤ 2.7). This set of models was used for modelling of the energy distribution in the spectrum of an evolved carbon star DY Per demonstrating photometric features of the R CrB type stars. Most of the models are metal-poor (−3.5 ≤ [Fe/H] < 0) and a portion of them was calculated with the hydrogen deficiency (1/9 ≤ H/He < 9/1). The calculations of the models were carried out taking into account specific for carbon stars sources of opacity in the frame of the classic approaches. The opacity sampling method was used to calculate the opacity due to the atomic and molecular line absorption.  相似文献

Based on multicolor photometry from the 2MASS and Tycho-2 catalogues, we have produced a sample of 38 368 branch red giants that has less than 1% of admixtures and is complete within 500 pc of the Sun. The sample includes 30 671 K giants, 7544Mgiants, 49 C giants, and 104 suspected supergiants or S stars. The photometric distances have been calculated for K, M, and C stars with an accuracy of 40%. Tycho-2 proper motions and PCRV radial velocities are used to analyze the stellar kinematics. The decrease in the stellar distribution density with distance from the Galactic equator approximated by the barometric law, contrary to the Besanconmodel of the Galaxy, and the kinematic parameters calculated using the Ogorodnikov-Milne model characterize the overwhelming majority of the selected K and M giants as disk stars with ages of more than 3 Gyr. A small number of K and M giants are extremely young or, conversely, thick-disk ones. The latter show a nonuniform distribution in the phase space of coordinates and velocities, arguing against isothermality and full relaxation of the disk and for the theory of dynamical streams or superclusters. The spatial distribution and kinematics of the selected C stars force us to consider them as asymptotic branch giants with masses of more than 2M and ages of less than 2 Gyr probably associated with the Gould Belt. The offset of the Sun above the Galactic equator has been found from the distribution of stars to be 13 ± 2 pc, which coincides with the previously obtained value for the clump red giants.  相似文献

Excitation of radial pulsations in red supergiants of Magellanic Clouds is investigated using the stellar evolution calculations and the self-consistent solution of the equations of radiation hydrodynamics and turbulent convection. The stars with initial masses 6M M ZAMS ≤ 28M and the initial chemical composition X = 0.7, 0.004 ≤ Z ≤ 0.008 are shown to be unstable against fundamental mode oscillations with periods from 17 to 1200 days as they become helium burning red supergiants. The period-luminosity relation slightly depends on the mass loss rate varying with a factor of three, whereas its dependence on the metal abundance is given by δM bol = 0.89δ log Z. In comparison with galactic red supergiants the low metal abundances in red supergiants of Magellanic Clouds are responsible for their higher effective temperatures and substantially narrower ranges of evolutionary radius change during helium burning. Therefore on the period-mass diagram the red supergiants of Magellanic Clouds are located within the strip with width of δ logM ≈ 0.09, so that the uncertainty of mass evaluation of the red supergiant with the known pulsation period is nearly 25%.  相似文献

Vibrational temperatures in the atmospheres of nine M type giants of luminosity class III and subtypes M2-M8 located in the Galactic plane have been determined from the γ band system of the TiO molecule. The relationship between T exc and T eff has been established in agreement with the chosen T eff calibration scale. The deviation of T exc with recspect to T eff for our stars has been used as an indicator of the depth of the atmospheric layers in which the molecular bands are formed. Results fromCMT 1T2 1T2 broad-band and DDO intermediate-band photometry are presented for G and K giants in the old open clusters NGC. 2482, NGC 3680, and IC 4651. Two independent photometric criteria have been used to separate red field stars from the physical members of the clusters. Recent calibrations of the DDO andCMT 1T2 systems have been used to derive reddening, distance moduli, metallicities, effective temperatures, and surface gravities. Rough estimates of masses have also been made. The giants of NGC 2482 and IC 4651 have CN strengths nearly identical to the Hyades giants, while those of NGC 3680 are slightly richer in CN than the nearby K giants.CMT1T2 abundance analysis in NGC 2482 and NGC 3680 yield [Fe/H]MT = - 0.1 ± 0.1 as derived from the iron lines, while abundances derived from the CNO - contaminated (C - M) index are 0.4 dex higher. BothCMT 1T2 and DDO data support the conclusion that 1C 4651, with [Fe/H] = + 0.2 ± 0.1, is on the metalrich side of the distribution of intermediate and old open clusters. Finally, the mass results suggest that the clump stars in NGC 3680 and. IC 4651 could have undergone mass loss before reaching their helium core burning phase of evolution. On the basis of the effective temperature scale proposed previously for cool carbon stars (Paper I), other intrinsic properties of them are examined in detail. It is shown that the major spectroscopic properties of cool carbon stars, including those of molecular bands due to polyatomic species (SiC2, HCN, C2H2 etc.), can most consistently be understood on the basis of our new effective temperature scale and the theoretical prediction of chemical equilibrium. Various photometric indices of cool carbon stars also appear to be well correlated with the new effective temperatures. Furthermore, as effective temperatures of some 30 carbon stars are now obtained, the calibration of any photometric index is straightforward, and some examples of such a calibration are given. In general, colour index-effective temperature calibrations for carbon stars are quite different from those for K-M giant stars. It is found that the intrinsic (RI)0 colour is nearly the same for N-irregular variables in spite of a considerable spread in effective temperatures, and this fact is used to estimate the interstellar reddening of carbon stars. An observational HR diagram of red giant stars, including carbon stars as well as K-M giant stars, is obtained on the basis of our colour index-effective temperature calibrations and the best estimations of luminosities. It is shown that carbon stars and M giant stars are sharply divided in the HR diagram by a nearly vertical line at aboutT eff = 3200 K (logT eff = 3.50) and the carbon stars occupy the upper right region of M giant stars (except for some high luminosity, high temperature J-type stars in the Magellanic Clouds; also Mira variables are not considered). Such an observational HR diagram of red giant stars shows rather a poor agreement with the current stellar evolution models. Especially, a more efficient mixing process in red giant stars, as compared with those ever proposed, is required to explain the formation of carbon stars.  相似文献

The systematic UBV observations of six variable post-AGB supergiants in 1991–1999 are presented. Their variability is analyzed. The coolest stars V1027 Cyg and V354 Lac exhibit bimodal pulsations with variable amplitudes. Apart from pulsations, the hotter stars V887 Her and IRAS 19386+0155 show light variations associated with a stellar wind. A variable stellar wind appears to be mainly responsible for the photometric variations in the still hotter stars SAO 163075 and IRAS 20572+4919. Distinct trends in the yearly mean brightness have been found in three of the six supergiants studied, with the trend amplitude being independent of the spectral range. They are interpreted as the result of dust envelopes composed of large grains with R=A V /E(B?V)≥7 becoming optically thin.  相似文献

We have performed statistical equilibrium calculations for Ca I–Ca II, Ti I–Ti II, and Fe I–Fe II by taking into account the nonequilibrium line formation conditions (the non-LTE approach) in model atmospheres of giant stars with effective temperatures 4000 K ≤ T eff ≤ 5000 K and metal abundances ?4 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0. The dependence of departures from LTE on atmospheric parameters has been analyzed. We present the non-LTE abundance corrections for 28 Ca I lines, 42 Ti I lines, 54 Ti II lines, and 262 Fe I lines and a three-dimensional interpolation code to obtain the non-LTE correction online for an individual line and specified atmospheric parameters.  相似文献

We describe Bayesian probabilistic approach to estimating the properties of stars and the interstellar extinction law based on photometric observations and using prior data about the parameters of the stars. The accuracy of the resulting estimates is analyzed in the case of SDSS and 2MASS surveys. We found that our estimates have no systematic deviations in the case of photometric accuracy typical of the surveys considered and errors of prior data of ΔT eff = ±150 K and Δlog g = ±0.5. Note that the error of the estimated interstellar extinction A 0 is of about 0. m 3, and the error of the R 0 estimate depends on extinction and is close 0.2 for moderate A0 values. The fractional error of the estimated stellar angular diameters is close to 10%. A possible application of our approach is to determine the dependence of interstellar extinction on distance using stars closely located in the same sky area.  相似文献

Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ACS/WFC images, we have performed stellar photometry for eight fields of the spiral galaxy NGC 1313 and its satellite, the low-mass Sph/Irr galaxy AM0319-662. Stars of various ages have been identified on the constructed Hertzsprung–Russell diagrams: young supergiants, middle-aged stars, and old stars (red giants); their apparent distributions over the body of the galaxy are presented. The red supergiants and giants have been divided into groups with larger and smaller color indices, corresponding to a difference in stellar metallicity. These groups of stars are shown to have different spatial distributions and to belong to two galaxies, NGC1313 itself and the disrupted satellite. We have determined the distance to NGC 1313, D = 3.88 ± 0.07 Mpc, by the TRGB method from six fields. Our photometry of 2014 HST images has revealed an emerged charge transfer inefficiency on the ACS/WFC CCDs, which manifests itself as a dependence of the photometry of stars on their coordinates on the CCD.  相似文献

Hot cluster horizontal branch (HB) stars and field subdwarf B (sdB) stars are core helium burning stars that exhibit abundance anomalies that are believed to be due to atomic diffusion. Diffusion can be effective in these stars because they are slowly rotating. In particular, the slow rotation of the hot HB stars (Teff > 11000 K), which show abundance anomalies, contrasts with the fast rotation of the cool HB stars, where the observed abundances are consistent with those of red giants belonging to the same cluster. The reason why sdB stars and hot HB stars are rotating slowly is unknown. In order to assess the possible role of magnetic fields on abundances and rotation, we investigated the occurrence of such fields in sdB stars with Teff < 30 000 K, whose temperatures overlap with those of the hot HB stars. We conclude that large‐scale organised magnetic fields of kG order are not generally present in these stars but at the achieved accuracy, the possibility that they have fields of a few hundred Gauss remains open. We report the marginal detection of such a field in SB 290; further observations are needed to confirm it (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Study of curve of growth abundance determinations is performed for the method of weighting functions. We evaluated abundances of iron for 15 stars changing their effective temperatures and gravities within the mean error of determination of these parameters, i.e.θ eff ± 0.05θ eff and logg ± 0.5. Wide range of spectral types of stars taken into account, permits analysis of accuracy of abundance determinations for large part of H-R diagram. The results prove, that in spite of using the most accurate method of curve of growth analysis, the accuracy of abundance determination (due to errors inT eff and log g) is sometimes very small (in extreme cases not better than 0.4 dex) and the value of accuracy is connected with of spectral types of stars.  相似文献

The goal of this work is to assess the expected scientific output from the photometric studies of globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud with ESA's astrometric space mission GAIA. For this purpose we simulate GAIA photometry of individual stars in synthetic cluster populations, covering a large range of cluster ages and metallicities. We find that accurate effective temperatures (Δ T eff<10%) can be obtained from GAIA photometry down to V ∼ 18 for stars in populations within the studied metallicity range ([M/H] = -0.4 ... -1.7). GAIA will also provide photometric metallicities (Δ [M/H] ≲ 0.3 dex) for the cluster giants brighter than V ∼ 17.5. The knowledge of the effective temperature sand metallicities will allow to obtain accurate ages of stellar populations younger than about 1 Gyr using the usual procedure of main sequence turn-off point fitting. Ages of older stellar populations (≳ 1 Gyr) may be constrained from the isochrone fits to the giant branches in the observed CMDs. We conclude that GAIA will provide excellent opportunities for studying star formation histories far beyond the Milky Way, providing means for better understanding of stellar and galactic evolution in different astrophysical environments. Results are reported of a study of the atmospheric chemical composition for 12 F5-K0 type stars in the Hyades cluster. The study uses spectra obtained with the 1.93-m telescope of the Haute-Provence Observatory (France) with the ELODIE echelle-type spectrograph in the wavelength range 440–680 nm. The spectral resolution is R = 40000, and S/N is ~50. The equivalent widths of the lines are measured in the wavelength range 510–680 nm. The main parameters of the stars are determined: the effective temperature T eff, the gravity logg, the microturbulence velocities V t , and the abundances of Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Y, La, Ce, and Nd. The abundance estimates for the dwarfs and giants are similar within the errors of determination, except for the Na abundances.  相似文献
