The SOLAR-A spacecraft is to be launched by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan (ISAS) in August, 1991. As a successor of HINOTORI, this mission is dedicated principally to the study of solar flares, especially of high-energy phenomena observed in the X- and gamma-ray ranges. The SOLAR-A will be the unique space solar observatory during the current activity maximum period (1989–1992). With a coordinated set of instruments including hard X-ray and soft X-ray imaging telescopes as well as spectrometers with advanced capabilities, it will reveal many new aspects of flares and help better understand their physics, supporting international collaborations with ground-based observatories as well as theoretical investigations. An overview of this mission, including the satellite, its scientific instruments, and its operation, is given in this paper. Also the scientific objectives are briefly discussed.After the launch the name of SOLAR-A has been changed to YOHKOH.  相似文献

On board the SOHO spacecraft poised at L1 Lagrange point, the SWAN instrument is mainly devoted to the measurement of large scale structures of the solar wind, and in particular the distribution with heliographic latitude of the solar wind mass flux. This is obtained from an intensity map of the sky Lyman emission, which reflects the shape of the ionization cavity carved in the flow of interstellar H atoms by the solar wind. The methodology, inversion procedure and related complications are described. The subject of latitude variation of the solar wind is shortly reviewed: earlier Lyman results from Prognoz in 1976 are confirmed by Ulysses. The importance of the actual value of the solar wind mass flux for the equation of dynamics in a polar coronal hole is stressed. The instrument is composed of one electronic unit commanding two identical Sensor Units, each of them allowing to map a full hemisphere with a resolution of 1°, thanks to a two-mirrors periscope system. The design is described in some details, and the rationale for choice between several variants are discussed. A hydrogen absorption cell is used to measure the shape of the interplanetary Lyman line and other Lyman emissions. Other types of observations are also discussed : the geocorona, comets (old and new), the solar corona, and a possible signature of the heliopause. The connexion with some other SOHO instruments, in particular LASCO, UVCS, SUMER, is briefly discussed.  相似文献

EIT: Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope for the SOHO mission   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
The Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) will provide wide-field images of the corona and transition region on the solar disc and up to 1.5 R above the solar limb. Its normal incidence multilayer-coated optics will select spectral emission lines from Fe IX (171 ), Fe XII (195 ), Fe XV (284 ), and He II (304 ) to provide sensitive temperature diagnostics in the range from 6 × 104 K to 3 × 106 K. The telescope has a 45 x 45 arcmin field of view and 2.6 arcsec pixels which will provide approximately 5-arcsec spatial resolution. The EIT will probe the coronal plasma on a global scale, as well as the underlying cooler and turbulent atmosphere, providing the basis for comparative analyses with observations from both the ground and other SOHO instruments. CELIAS - Charge, Element and Isotope Analysis System for SOHO   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The CELIAS experiment on SOHO is designed to measure the mass, ionic charge and energy of the low and high speed solar wind, of suprathermal ions, and of low energy flare particles. Through analysis of the elemental and isotopic abundances, the ionic charge state, and the velocity distributions of ions originating in the solar atmosphere, the investigation focuses on the plasma processes on various temporal and spatial scales in the solar chromosphere, transition zone, and corona. CELIAS includes 3 mass- and charge-discriminating sensors based on the time-of-flight technique: CTOF for the elemental, charge and velocity distribution of the solar wind, MTOF for the elemental and isotopic composition of the solar wind, and STOF for the mass, charge and energy distribution of suprathermal ions. The instrument will provide detailed in situ diagnostics of the solar wind and of accelerated particles, which will complement the optical and spectroscopic investigations of the solar atmosphere on SOHO. CELIAS also contains a Solar Extreme Ultraviolet Monitor, SEM, which continously measures the EUV flux in a wide band of 17 – 70 nm, and a narrow band around the 30.4 nm He II line.Principal-InvestigatorPrincipal-Investigator for data phase  相似文献

We present velocity estimates of bulk motions in the solar corona using data from the Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory spacecraft ( SOHO ). We describe a new technique which automatically provides a mass-weighted mean velocity profile in an entirely objective fashion without the need for individual event identification. A weighted velocity profile of this kind reflects the motion of the energetically dominant component of the coronal mass ejection (CME) mass spectrum and is of particular interest in consideration of the overall energy budget of the CME process. We consider the mean motion within three latitudinal bands centred at 0°, 20° and 40° over a one-year period around the time of solar minimum. We find terminal velocities within the LASCO field of around 300 km s−1 in all latitude bands but note a latitudinal dependence in CME evolution through the low corona prior to reaching these velocities. We find evidence that ejections in the equatorial zone undergo continuous acceleration whilst at higher latitudes a discrete burst of acceleration is seen to occur at around 4 R from the Sun's centre with relatively little acceleration thereafter. The formation of solar-wind stream structure is investigated. Characteristic features of the solar and coronal magnetic-field structure, morphological features of the white-light corona, and radio maps of the solar-wind transition (transonic) region are compared. The solar-wind stream structure is detected and studied by using radio maps of the transition region, the raggedness of its boundaries, and their deviation from spherical symmetry. The radio maps have been constructed from radioastronomical observations in 1995–1997. It is shown that the structural changes in the transition region largely follow the changes occurring in regions closer to the Sun, in the circumsolar magnetic-field structure, and in the solar-corona structure. The correlations between the magnetic-field strength in the solar corona and the location of the inner (nearest the Sun) boundary of the transition region are analyzed. The distinct anticorrelation between the coronal magnetic-field strength and the distance of the transition region from the Sun is a crucial argument for the penetration of solar magnetic fields into plasma streams far from the Sun.  相似文献

The daily images and magnetograms acquired by MDI are a rich source of information about the contributions of different types of solar regions to variations in the total solar irradiance (TSI). These data have been used to determine the temporal variation of the MDI irradiance, the mean intensity of the solar disk in the continuum at 676.8 nm. The short-term (days to weeks) variations of the MDI irradiance and TSI are in excellent agreement with rms differences of 0.011%. This indicates that MDI irradiance is an excellent proxy for short-term variations of TSI from the competing irradiance contributions of regions causing irradiance increases, such as plages and bright network, and regions causing irradiance decreases, such as sunspots. However, the long-term or solar cycle variation of the MDI proxy and TSI differ over the 11-year period studied. The results indicate that the primary sources of the long-term (several months or more) variations in TSI are regions with magnetic fields between about 80 and 600 G. The results also suggest that the difference in the long-term variations of the MDI proxy and TSI is due to a component of TSI associated with sectors of the solar spectrum where the contrast in intensity between plages and the quiet Sun is enhanced (e.g., the UV) compared to the MDI proxy. This is evidence that the long-term variation of TSI is due primarily to solar cycle variations of the irradiance from these portions of solar spectrum, a finding consistent with modeling calculations indicating that approximately 60% of the change in TSI between solar minimum and maximum is produced by the UV part of the spectrum shortward of 400 nm (Solanki and Krivova, Space Sci. An important issue in the tomographic reconstruction of the solar poles is the relatively rapid evolution of the polar plumes. We demonstrate that it is possible to take into account this temporal evolution in the reconstruction. The difficulty of this problem comes from the fact that we want a four-dimensional reconstruction (three spatial dimensions plus time) whereas we only have three-dimensional data (two-dimensional images plus time). To overcome this difficulty, we introduce a model that describes polar plumes as stationary objects whose intensity varies homogeneously with time. This assumption can be physically justified if one accepts the stability of the magnetic structure. This model leads to a bilinear inverse problem. We describe how to extend linear inversion methods to these kinds of problems. Studies of simulations show the reliability of our method. Results for SOHO/EIT data show that we can estimate the temporal evolution of polar plumes to improve the reconstruction of the solar poles from only one point of view. We expect further improvements from STEREO/EUVI data when the two probes will be separated by about 60°.  相似文献

The behavioural features of the IMF Bz component for different solar wind velocity regimes have been studied. The study revealed a significant difference in variations of the Bz component between high-speed and low-speed regimes. Formation mechanisms for the IMF meridional component as well as the relationship of Bz with dynamical properties of the large-scale magnetic fields on the Sun are discussed.  相似文献

Using the line profiles of [Fe x] 6374 å and [Fe XIV] 5303 å emission lines observed during five total solar eclipses, we address the problem whether the solar corona is static or contains moving features. Many of the profiles of both emission lines have complicated shapes, which we interpret as an evidence for the existence of many, small, moving features in the corona. The line-of-sight velocities observed by other investigators (e.g. Desai, Chandrasekhar & Angreji 1982) also support this view. On the other hand, about 15 recent interferometric and multislit investigations of coronal emission lines have not shown evidence of moving elements. We suggest that this is due to insufficient spatial resolution.  相似文献

The GOLF experiment on the SOHO mission aims to study the internal structure of the sun by measuring the spectrum of global oscillations in the frequency range 10–7 to 10–2 Hz. Bothp andg mode oscillations will be investigated, with the emphasis on the low order long period waves which penetrate the solar core. The instrument employs an extension to space of the proven ground-based technique for measuring the mean line-of-sight velocity of the viewed solar surface. By avoiding the atmospheric disturbances experienced from the ground, and choosing a non-eclipsing orbit, GOLF aims to improve the instrumental sensitivity limit by an order of magnitude to 1 mm s–1 over 20 days for frequencies higher than 2.10–4 Hz. A sodium vapour resonance cell is used in a longitudinal magnetic field to sample the two wings of the solar absorption line. The addition of a small modulating field component enables the slope of the wings to be measured. This provides not only an internal calibration of the instrument sensitivity, but also offers a further possibility to recognise, and correct for, the solar background signal produced by the effects of solar magnetically active regions. The use of an additional rotating polariser enables measurement of the mean solar line-of-sight magnetic field, as a secondary objective.  相似文献

Resonant heating of H, O+5, and Mg+9 by parallel propagating ion cyclotron Alfven waves in solar coronal holes at a heliocentric distance is studied using the heating rate derived from the quasilinear theory. It is shown that the particle-AlfVen-wave interaction is a significant microscopic process. The temperatures of the ions are rapidly increased up to the observed order in only microseconds, which implies that simply inserting the quasilinear heating rate into the fluid/MHD energy equation to calculate the radial dependence of ion temperatures may cause errors as the time scales do not match. Different species ions are heated by Alfven waves with a power law spectrum in approximately a mass order. To heat O+5 over Mg+9 as measured by the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) in the solar coronal hole at a region ≥1.9.R, the energy density of Alfven waves with a frequency close to the O+5-cyclotron frequency must be at least double of that at the Mg+9-cyclotron frequency. We present meridional flow measurements of the Sun using a novel helioseismic approach for analyzing SOHO/MDI data in order to push the current limits in radial depth. Analyzing three consecutive months of data during solar minimum, we find that the meridional flow is as expected poleward in the upper convection zone, turns equatorward at a depth of around 40 Mm (∼ 0.95 R), and possibly changes direction again in the lower convection zone. 与太阳射电爆发相比,通常认为频率较低的行星际射电爆发产生于远离低日冕的行星际空间.地球电离层的截止导致地基设备无法对其进行观测.美国国家航空航天局(National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA)发射的帕克太阳探测器(Parker Solar Probe, PSP)是迄今为止距离太阳最近的空间探测器.其搭载的射电频谱仪能够对10 k Hz–19.17 MHz频段范围内的射电辐射进行观测. PSP能够靠近甚至可能穿越行星际III型射电爆发的辐射源区,因此使用PSP对行星际射电爆发进行观测具有前所未有的优势.简要介绍了目前为止使用PSP的射电观测数据对行星际III型射电爆发的多方面研究,包括爆发的发生率、偏振、散射、截止频率、可能的辐射机制和相关的辐射源区等方面的研究进展,并讨论了其未来的研究前景.  相似文献

The expansion of solar coronal plasma is considered for the model described in Koutchmy et al. (1999). In addition to a spherical solar surface, the initial configuration represents a heliospheric sheet of dense plasma in the dipole equatorial plane. The heliospheric-sheet current decreases with distance as 1/r 2, with its sign being opposite to the sign of the initial-dipole current. The latter follows from the fact that the plasma sheet is denser than the surrounding corona and that the equilibrium condition for the sheet in the gravitational and magnetic fields is satisfied. The field lines of this configuration are nearly straight. We have obtained a general solution of the steady-state MHD equations, which depends not only on distance r but also on latitude θ. Applicability of the solution to interpreting observational data, in particular, those obtained from the Ulysses spacecraft, is discussed.  相似文献

Based on a comprehensive analysis of the October 25, 1994 event, we consider the balance of energetic particles in a type-IV solar radio emission source with a zebra-type fine structure (in a coronal magnetic loop). The zebra pattern is formed through the injection of fast electrons into a trap and the formation of a ring-type nonequilibrium electron distribution function. We estimated the characteristic zebra-pattern lifetime, which is determined by the escape of fast particles from the trap into the loss cone. In addition, we determined the number of fast particles that must be injected into the trap to provide the observed radio brightness temperature in zebra-pattern stripes by analyzing the plasma emission mechanism responsible for the zebra-pattern generation. As a result, we estimated the efficiency of the electron acceleration mechanism in coronal magnetic loops at the post-flare evolutionary phase of an active region.  相似文献

Plasma and magnetic field measurements made onboard the Venus Express on June 1, 2006, are analyzed and compared with predictions of a global model. It is shown that in the orbit studied, the plasma and magnetic field observations obtained near the North Pole under solar minimum conditions were qualitatively and, in many cases also, quantitatively in agreement with the general picture obtained using a global numerical quasi-neutral hybrid model of the solar wind interaction (HYB-Venus). In instances where the orbit of Venus Express crossed a boundary referred to as the magnetic pileup boundary (MPB), field line tracing supports the suggestion that the MPB separates the region that is magnetically connected to the fluctuating magnetosheath field from a region that is magnetically connected to the induced magnetotail lobes.  相似文献

Interaction between the strong solar wind and the dark side of a cometary nucleus was considered. It was calculated that the potential of the dark side of the cometary nucleus could be numerically large and negative. Assuming that the nucleus of the comet has surface mantle which consists of loose, fine dust-ice particles, it was shown that cometary particles could electrostatically levitate over the nucleus. It was examined how this phenomenon affected the changes in the cometary brightness. Calculations were carried out for realistically assumed values of a large range of cometary parameters. It was shown that the considered mechanism could lead to the variations of cometary brightness, sometimes even to the outbursts of brightness.  相似文献
