TheUBV-photometry of a well-known X-ray binary Her X-1/HZ Her over 16 years is presented. The mean light curves of this system were constructed, using our and published data. Based on our observations in primary minimum the colour behaviour of Her X-1/HZ Her was investigated. With the Hamilton echelle spectrograph at the Lick Observatory, emission-rich spectral lines of the planetary nebula NGC 6543 were secured in the wavelength range from 3550 to 10 100 Å. We chose two bright regions, ∼8 arcsec east and ∼13 arcsec north of the central star, the physical conditions and chemical abundances of which may differ as a result of the different physical characteristics involving the mass ejection of different epochs. By combining Hamilton echelle observations with archive UV data secured with the International Ultraviolet Explorer ( IUE ), we obtain improved diagnostics and chemical compositions for the two observed regions. The diagnostic diagram gives the average value of T e=8000∼8300 K, and the electron number density near N e∼5000 cm−3 for most ions, while some low-excitation lines indicate much higher temperatures, i.e. T e∼10 000 K. With the construction of a photoionization model, we try to fit the observed spectra in a self-consistent way: thus, for most elements, we employ the same chemical abundances in the nebular shell; and we adopt an improved Sobolev approximation model atmosphere for the hydrogen-deficient Wolf–Rayet type central star. Within the observational errors, the chemical abundances do not seem to show any positional variation except for helium. The chemical abundances of NGC 6543 appear to be the same as in average planetary nebulae. The progenitor star may have been an object of one solar mass, most of the heavier elements of which were less plentiful than in the Sun.  相似文献

By using the Boller and Chivens spectrograph with a moderate dispersion (59 å mm-1) in the red spectral region, we obtained 65 spectra covering the whole surface of the planetary nebula NGC 2440. Intensities of Hα, [N II] λλ 6548–6584 and [S II] λλ 6717–6731 lines are derived using the IDS system available at the ESO in La Silva (Chile). The nebula is known to be a nitrogen-rich nebula (Peimbert 1978) surrounded by secondary structures (Minkowski 1964). The unusual high value of the [N II]/Hα in the central core (~ 30) is certainly due to the nitrogen overabundance occurring in that part of the nebula. Its variations from scale ionization structure (Capriotti, Cromwell and Williams 1971). The observations show clearly an outward increase of both [NII]/Hα andI(6717)/I(6713) ratios.  相似文献

High-resolution, spatially-resolved profiles of H α , He  ii λ 6560 and [O  iii ] λ 5007 and deep narrow-band CCD images in the H α and [O  iii ] λ 5007 emission lines have been obtained of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 4361. In addition, VLA-DnC λ 3.6-cm continuum observations are presented. This material allows one to explore in unprecedented detail the morphology and kinematics of this PN. The morphology of this object is complex given the highly filamentary structure of the envelope, which is confirmed to possess a low mass. The halo has a high expansion velocity that yields incompatible kinematic and evolutionary ages, unless previous acceleration of the nebular expansion is considered. However, the most remarkable result from the present observations is the detection of a bipolar outflow in NGC 4361, which is unexpected in a PN with a Population II low-mass-core progenitor. It is shown that shocks resulting from the interaction of the bipolar outflow with the outer shell are able to provide an additional heating source in this nebula.  相似文献

We present the results of our spectroscopic studies of the nebula NGC 6857 located in a region of current star formation. Data on the surface brightness distribution in the central region of the nebula (~60″ × 60″) in the Hα, Hβ, [OIII], 5007 Å, [N II], 6548, 6583 Å, [S II], 6717, 6731 Å, and He I, 6678 Å lines have been obtained with an angular resolution of ~4.″5 × 4.″5. The zones of maximum surface brightness and the region of maximum gas ionization ratio are located 12″ south of the central star, which may suggest the existence of a second gas ionization source.  相似文献

Electron densities have been measured from [Sii] 6716/6731 Å line ratios for a grid of points over the surface of the planetary nebula NGC 7009 using a photon counting detector. The radial dependence of the electron density has been modelled, and the relationship provides possible evidence that the planetary nebula shell is driven by a strong stellar wind.  相似文献

This paper gives the result of photographic photography of the central star AGK3-0° 695 of the planetary nebula NGC 2346 made from 1981 through 1987. From it we see that after the large-amplitude eclipses which had started at the end of 1981 had continued for several years, the amplitude began to decrease rapidly in 1986 to ˜1.1 mag from ˜4 mag in 1984. In 1987, only irregular fluctuations with amplitudes ˜0.4 mag were present in the light curve and not longer any clear periodicity. We found 36 emission lines in the spectrum of the planetary nebula NGC 2438, and we determined its exc. class to be about 6–7. The nebular RVhel = 60.3 ± 3.6 km/s (5 spectra) is in agreement with RVhel = 60.8 ± 4.0 km/s of 4 cluster stars (10 spectra). We conclude that contrary to earlier statements the nebula is probably associated with the cluster.  相似文献

New Observations of the [Nii]6584 Å line have been made over the surface of the Dumbell nebula (NGC 6853). The observed lines at the centre of the nebula disc exhibited line splitting of 54.3 km s–1. The lines appeared double at the centre of the nebula and became single at the boundary. These observations are discussed and compared with those obtained by previous workers.  相似文献

We investigate the manner in which lenticular galaxies are formed by studying their stellar kinematics: an S0 formed from a fading spiral galaxy should display similar cold outer disc kinematics to its progenitor, while an S0 formed in a minor merger should be more dominated by random motions. In a pilot study, an attempt to distinguish between these scenarios, we have measured the planetary nebula (PN) kinematics of the nearby S0 system NGC 1023. Using the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph, we have detected and measured the line-of-sight velocities of 204 candidate planetary nebulae (PNe) in the field of this galaxy. Out to intermediate radii, the system displays the kinematics of a normal rotationally supported disc system. After correction of its rotational velocities for asymmetric drift, the galaxy lies just below the spiral galaxy Tully–Fisher relation, as one would expect for a fading system. However, at larger radii the kinematics undergo a gradual but major transition to random motion with little rotation. This transition does not seem to reflect a change in the viewing geometry or the presence of a distinct halo component, since the number counts of PNe follow the same simple exponential decline as the stellar continuum with the same projected disc ellipticity out to large radii. The galaxy's small companion, NGC 1023A, does not seem to be large enough to have caused the observed modification either. This combination of properties would seem to indicate a complex evolutionary history in either the transition to form an S0 or in the past life of the spiral galaxy from which the S0 formed. More data sets of this type from both spirals and S0s are needed in order to definitively determine the relationship between these types of system.  相似文献

NGC 4361 is an extremely high excitation, low-density, very inhomogeneous nebula. New spectroscopic data obtained with the Anglo-Australian telescope, together with published material, have been re-interpreted with the aid of theoretical nebular models that permit an estimation of its chemical composition. Helium may be slightly more abundant than in an ordinary planetary, although this is far from certain. Nitrogen, oxygen, and neon appear to be deficient by a factor of 3 or 4 compared with an ordinary planetary nebula. Argon is likewise deficient but the factor is more difficult to establish, partly because of the nebular inhomogeneity and partly because of uncertainties in cross-sections. THe nebula is material bounded and optically thin in the hydrogen continuum. In contrast to other high-excitation nebulae, the low-excitation condensations appear to have been destroyed by penetration of ionizing radiation.  相似文献
