Long-period hydromagnetic waves can be excited by the velocity shear instability in the magnetospheric boundary layers, where the penetrated bulk flow of the solar wind comprises a fairly strong velocity shear. Model spaces of the boundary layers are considered to estimate amplification rates on the HM waves in the low-latitude flank-side and in the dayside high-latitude and mantle-side boundary layers, where the ambient magnetic field is assumed to be perpendicular and parallel to the bulk flow of the solar wind, respectively. Wave characteristics of the HM waves are also investigated for the k-vector almost normal to the magnetopause.The localized HM waves in the Pc 3–4, Pc 4–5 and Pc 6 frequency ranges, of which group velocities are mostly parallel to the plane in the ambient magnetic field and the bulk flow directions, i.e., parallel to the magnetopause, are sufficiently amplified in the dayside low- and high-latitude, in the low-latitude flank-side, and in the mantle-side boundary layers, respectively. A left-handed toroidal (transverse) and a right-handed poloidal (compressional) mode of long-period (T ? 120 sA-wave are generated in the dawn- and the duskflank boundary layers, respectively, where the k-vector of Alfvénic signals was assumed to be almost in the Archemedean spiral direction. The localized compressional HM waves in the Pc 3–4 range indicate both lefthanded and right-handed polarizations in the dayside boundary layer, which are functions of the k-vector of the waves and the sense of the velocity shear. The variance directions of perturbation fields of the HM waves in the magnetospheric boundary layers tend to be nearly parallel to the magnetopause. These localized HM waves can propagate into the high-latitude ionosphere. We conclude that the localized HM waves driven by the velocity shear instability in the magnetospheric boundary layers are the most probable source of the daytime Pc 3–5 magnetic pulsations in the outer magnetosphere.  相似文献

The bulk flow of the solar wind plasma in the flank-side of the magnetospheric boundary layer, where the magnetic field lines are closed, has a component transverse to the ambient field. There is quite a strong velocity shear. The theoretical model ignores inhomogeneities in the ambient field and the mass density which occur at the magnetopause on about the same length scale as that of the velocity shear.Consideration is restricted to hydromagnetic waves which have a k-vector nearly normal to the Bo-Vo plane, i.e., approximately the magnetopause surface (kx >kzkykxLB > 1 and LB = 0.1 ~ 1.0 RE where LB is a characteristic length of the boundary layer). It is found that a long-period (T ? 40 sec) hydromagnetic wave [the Alfvén-like wave (ΩA)] driven by velocity shear instability can be excited in the shear plasma. It is also found that the group velocity of the HM-wave is directed almost along the magnetic field line and that the magnetic variance in the shear plasma tends to be parallel to the Bo-Vo plane. The velocity shear instability in the magnetospheric boundary layer is judged to be a likely source of long-period magnetic pulsations.  相似文献

In the recent estimation by Maltsev and Lyatsky (1984) of the group velocity of surface waves on the inner boundary of the plasma sheet, the effect of the curvature of the field lines of the ambient magnetic field of the Earth on the spectrum has been assessed. The authors have not accounted for the fact, however, that the group velocity of the compressional surface magnetohydrodynamic waves itself is nonzero transverse to the magnetic field—a characteristic which has been omitted in the spectrum of Chen and Hasegawa (1974), being used by Maltsev and Lyatsky.This characteristic of compressional surface MHD waves is inherent for the spectrum ω = (k6k)VA(k26 + 2k2)12, obtained by Nenovski (1978) in the cold plasma limit VA ? VS(VA is Alfvén velocity, and VS, sound velocity). A comment has been made on the restrictions, proceeding from the approximation, used by Maltsev and Lyatsky. The estimation of the velocities for movements of auroral riometer absorption bays have been reviewed.  相似文献

Daytime Pc 3–4 pulsation activities observed at globally coordinated low-latitude stations [SGC (L = 1.8,λ = 118.0°W), EWA(1.15,158.1°W), ONW(1.3,141.5°E)] are evidently controlled by the cone angle θXB of the IMF observed at ISEE 3. Moreover, the Pc 3–4 frequencies (?) at the low latitudes and high latitude (COL; L = 5.6 and λ = 147.9°W) on the ground and that of compressional waves at geosynchronous orbit (GOES 2; L = 6.67 and λ = 106.7°W) are also correlated with the IMFmagnitude(BIMF).The correlation of ? of the compressional Pc 3–4 waves at GOES 2 against BIMF is higher than those of the Pc 3–4 pulsations at the globally coordinated ground stations, i.e., γ = 0.70 at GOES 2, and (0.36,0.60,0.66,0.54) at (COL, SGC, EWA, ONW), respectively. The standard deviation (σn = ± Δ? mHz) of the observed frequencies from the form ? (mHz) = 6.0 × BIMF (nT) is larger at the ground stations than at GOES 2, i.e., Δ? = ± 6.6 mHz atGOES 2, and ±(13.9, 9.1, 10.7, 12.1) mHz at (COL, SGC, EWA, ONW), respectively. The correlations between the IMF magnitude BIMF and Pc 3–4 frequencies at the low latitudes are higher than that at the high latitude on the ground, which can be interpreted by a “filtering action” of the magnetosphere for daytime Pc 3–4 magnetic pulsations. The scatter plots of pulsation frequency ? against the IMF magnitude BIMF for the compressional Pc 3–4 waves at GOES 2 are restricted within the forms ? = 4.5 × BIMFand ? = 7.5 × BIMF. The frequency distribution is in excellent agreement with the speculation (scΩi = 0.3 ~ 0.5) of the spacecraft frame frequency of the magnetosonic right-hand waves excited by the anomalous ion cyclotron resonance with reflected ion beams with V6 = 650 ~ 1150 km s?1 in the solar wind frame observed by the ISEE satellite in the Earth's foreshock. These observational results suggest that the magnetosonic right-handed waves excited by the reflected ion beams in the Earth's foreshock are convected through the magnetosheath to the magnetopause, transmitted into the magnetosphere without significant changes in spectra, and then couple with various HM waves in the Pc 3–4 frequency range at various locations in the magnetosphere.  相似文献

A parametric excitation of the Alfvén wave (kA, ωa) by the magnetosonic wave (K1fs, ω1fs), which propagates obliquely to the static magnetic field, has been analyzed. The theoretical model for a one-fluid with uniform, unbounded, ideally conducting and compressible plasma is employed. The resonance conditions are chosen such as, k1fs = k1fs + kA and ω1fs ? ωA = δω2fs. The p wave is assumed to be strong enough, so that the pump wave is given as a constant. In both the case of the standing and the propagating pump the growth rates of the excited waves depend on not only the pump power but also the β-ratio. In the standing pump the threshold pump intensity of the oscillating instability is zero at the perfect matching. It is found that we can obtain a larger growth rate of the parametric excitation of Alfvén wave by the fast magnetosonic pump wave for θ1f ~ 70–80° and the occurrence regions of parametric excitations are localized at the resonance point in the magnetosphere (βme/mi). It is concluded that the parametric instability of Pc3 range HM-waves is the more possible theory than the linear resonance theory.  相似文献

In order to analyse the convective instability of the force-free magnetic field, an exact solution of the MHD equation for the magnetic field (1) together with the flow field (2) of constant speed V0 making an angle θ with the magnetic field, was chosen as the unperturbed state. The stability of the fields between two parallel conducting walls of seperation d was studied by a linear perturbation method, which led to the eigenvalue problem (12), X being given by (13). It was shown by an approximate variational method that instability will set in by the flow field if V0 is greater than 1/ 3 times Alfven velocity VA. For β=V2oV2A < 13, the stability of the force-free field (1) is not influenced by the flow field, which may still be significant in other respects. Perturbations transverse to the magnetic field were found to be the most unstable modes.  相似文献

The change of energy of a collisionless, two-fluid plasma consists of the adiabatic gain or loss of energy, which is due to the work done by the electromagnetic forces, and of the non-adiabatic change associated with the presence of the “rest” field E1 = E + (1c)V×B. The non-adiabatic gain or loss of energy per unit ti may be expressed by the relation
Q=E·i+ceNB2f?×f
where i is the density of conductive current, N the ion number-density, and f (f?) the sum of inertia and pressure divergence of ions (electrons). Symbols of parallelism refer to the direction of B.A special case of non-adiabatic energization of a slowly convecting plasma sheet plasma is discussed in some detail. Regardless of the value of V, the non-adiabatic energization may significantly exceed any conceivable energization associated with the electric field ?(1c) V × B.  相似文献

A new theory of the Alfvén wave generation in inhomogeneous finite β two component plasma is developed (β = 8πρβ02, ρ and B0 are plasma pressure and unperturbed magnetic field, respectively). The analysis was carried out for these waves both for long wave approximation i ? 1 as well as for i ? 1 (k and ρi are wave vector and larmor radius of protons). The influence of the loss-cone on the development of the instability is considered. The theory is applied to explain the generation mechanism of Pc 3–5.  相似文献

Impulsive penetration of a solar wind filament into the magnetosphere is possible when the plasma element has an excess momentum density with respect to the background medium. This first condition is satisfied when the density is larger inside than outside the plasma inhomogeneity. In this paper we discuss the second condition which must be satisfied for such a plasma element to be captured by the magnetosphere: the magnetization vector (M) carried by this plasma must have a positive component along the direction of B0, the magnetic field where the element penetrates through the magnetopause. On the contrary, when M · B0 < 0, the filament is stopped at the surface of the magnetopause. Thus the outcome of the interaction of the filament with the magnetosphere depends upon the orientation of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field. For instance, penetration and capture in the frontside magnetosphere implies that Bsw, the Interplanetary Magnetic Field, has a southward, or a small northward, component. Penetration and capture in the northern lobe of the magnetotail is favoured for an IMF pointing away from the Sun; in the southern lobe Bsw must be directed towards the Sun for capture. Finally, for capture in the vicinity of the polar cusps the magnetospheric field (B0) assumes a wider range of orientations. Therefore, near the neutral points, it is easier to find a place where the condition M · B0 > 0 is satisfied than elsewhere. As a consequence, the penetration and capture of solar wind irregularities in the cleft regions is possible for almost any orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field direction. All observations made to date support these theoretical conclusions.  相似文献

We have collected data on 241 galaxies from 13 sources and made a statistical analysis after reduction to a uniform system. We found that the Hubble sequence is one of increasing MHMT and MHLB, these mean values increasing monotonically from .0016 and .024 at E to .084 and .83 at Im, but the dispersion is large.The HI content in barred spiral is greater than that in ordinary spirals, and this is consistent with their statistics of angular momentum and colour.The HI content is related to colour; it is greater in bluer systems. The large dispersion suggests that it also depends on some other factors, but these are smoothed out when averaged over each type, resulting in a linear relation between 〈log(MMMT and 〈(B ? VOT)〉. Unlike the colour-colour diagram, the large dispersion on the log (MHLB) ? (B ? V0T) is not related to peculiar galaxies.  相似文献

We analyze linear resonance oscillations in a non-uniform one-fluid finite-β plasma, which is oversimplified to understand easily fundamental characteristics of the resonance oscillations. A linear resonance oscillation of localized slow magnetosonic mode 2s = ω2A(1 + V2AV2s)], which has the diamagnetic property in a uniform plasma, is newly found to be excited in the radially non-uniform plasma. The localized slow resonance indicates a radially polarized compressional oscillation (δB ? δBH ? δBD). The sense of the Alfvénic polarizations in the H-D plane near the resonant point is a function of both the propagation in the azimuthal direction and the slope of wave amplitude in the radial direction, whereas the sense of the resonant slow magnetosonic polarizations changes in accordance only with the switch in the azimuthal propagation direction. Further multi-satellite studies are necessary to establish the resonant structures of the slow magnetosonic waves in the magnetosphere.  相似文献

Latitudinal structures of discrete arcs are modelled as a consequence of the quasi-steady magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling involving viscous interaction between sunward and anti-sunward plasma flows in the magnetosphere. The quasi-steady state in the magnetosphere and ionosphere coupling is described by the magnetospheric and ionospheric current conservation and the field-aligned currentpotential relation assuming adiabatic electron motion along field lines. The upward and downward fieldaligned currents are assumed to be stably maintained by vorticity-induced space charges in the region of plasma flow reversal, where divergence of the magnetospheric electric field E is negative and positive, respectively. By introducing the effective conductance Σdc arising from the anomalous viscosity, a specific relation between the dc field-aligned current density J and the magnetospheric electric field E is derived as J=−ΣdcdivE. Sufficiently large potential drops to accelerate auroral electrons are shown to exist along the auroral field lines originating from the flow reversal region with div E < 0. It is shown that the latitudinal structure of a discrete arc is primarily determined by the magnetospheric potential structure and the characteristic width is on the order of 10 km at the ionospheric altitude.  相似文献

We calculate the Love numbers kn for n = 2 to 10, and determine the “gravitational noise” from tides. The new values k2 for Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus yield new estimates for the planetary dissipation functions: QJ ? 2.5 × 104, QS ? 1.4 × 104, QU ? 5 × 103.  相似文献

Substorm energy
It is shown that the area Ak(× 106km2) covered by brightest auroras and the area Aq bounded by the auroral oval have a simple relation given by
Ak = 0.05(Aq ? A0)2
, where A0 denotes the area of the minimum size oval and the quantity (Aq ? A0)2 is proportional to the energy εq which is stored in the magnetotail and is available for substorms. Following the definition of the intensity of solar flares, Ak may be chosen as a measure of the intensity of substorms. It is also found that the joule heat energy produced by the auroral electrojet is also proportional to (Aq ? A0)2. Thus, it may be concluded that the intensity of substorms is proportional to the energy εq stored in the magnetotail.  相似文献

Gravitational perturbations in semimajor axis, eccentricity, and inclination resulting from close planetesimal encounters (near 1 AU) out to 10 Tisserand sphere of influence radii were calculated by two- and three-dimensional numerical integration. These are compared with the results of treating the encounter as a two-body problem, as is customary in Monte Carlo calculations of orbital evolution and in numerical and analytical studies of planetary accumulation. It is found that for values of (VVe) ? 0.35 (V = relative velocity, Ve = escape velocity of largest body), the two-body body approximation fails to describe the outcome of individual encounters. In this low-velocity region, the two-body “gravitational focusing” cross section is no longer valid; “anomalous gravitational focusing” often leads to bodies on distant unperturbed trajectories becoming close encounters and vice versa. In spite of these differences, average perturbations given by the two-body approximation are valid within a factor of 2 when VVe > 0.07. In this same velocity range the “Arnold extrapolation,” whereby a few very close encounters are used to estimate the effect of many more distant encounters, is found to be a useful approximation.  相似文献

The problem of interaction between the interplanetary shock of 8 March, 1970 and the Earth's bow shock, magnetopause and plasmapause is considered. Estimates are made using existing models of the moments of initial impulsive interaction of interplanetary shocks with the bow shock and of the secondary interaction of the resulting split discontinuities with the magnetopause, plasmapause and a modified bow shock. Using computed data on the plasma's concentration jumps at discontinuities and on the latters' velocities, estimates have been carried out of remote sounding and the response signals' phase difference change rates Δf (which were found to be of the order of ~ 10?3?10?2Hz) appearing on the radio path with a non-coherent response near the subsolar region. It has been ascertained that the non-coherent response method permits, by using generators with a stability of ε =δrffO = 10?11?10?10, effective investigation (with a good time resolution) of the impulsive interaction of interplanetary shocks with the plasma discontinuities of the bow shockmagnetopause-plasmapause system.  相似文献

The effect of collisions on electrostatic instabilities driven by gravity and density gradients perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field is studied. Electron collisions tend to stabilize the short wavelength (ky?i ? 1, where ky is the perpendicular wavenumber of the instability and ?i is the ion Larmor radius) kinetic interchange mode. In the presence of weak ion-ion collisions, this mode gets converted into an unmagnetized ion interchange mode which has maximum growth rate one order smaller than that of the collisionless mode. On the other hand, electron collisions can excite a long wavelength resistive interchange mode in a wide wavenumber regime (10?3 ? ky ?i ? 0.3) with growth rates comparable to that of the collisional Rayleigh-Taylor mode. The results may be relevant to some of the spread F irregularities.  相似文献

The thermal escape of hydrogen from the Earth's atmosphere is strongly affected by its temperature at the exobase. It has been suggested recently that the hydrogen temperature might be significantly lower than the thermospheric temperature as a result of a collisional exchange of energy with atomic oxygen. The tendency is to cool the hydrogen since the energy of the excited 3P1 level of oxygen can be lost from the atmosphere via magnetic dipole emission of the 63 μm line (3P2?3P1). We present here a detailed calculation of the net cooling effect as a function of altitude throughout the thermosphere. The calculations have been performed for both day and night conditions and for periods of maximum and minimum solar activity conditions. It is found that its effect on ΔT/T varies from a very small value to a maximum of ~3%. We also provide the theoretical framework for describing deviations of the 63 μm emission from local thermodynamic equilibrium and show that these effects can cause the emission to be reduced by as much as 40% near 500 km.  相似文献

The paper gives the results of detailed studies of the frequency spectra Ss(?) of the chain of the wave packets Fs(t) of geomagnetic pulsations PC-1 recorded at the Novolazarevskaya station. The bulk of the energy of Fs(t) is concentrated in the vicinity of the central frequencies ?s0 of spectra—the carrier frequencies of the signals. The velocity V0 ≌ 6.103km s?1 of the flux of protons generating these signals correspond to them. The spectra of the signals have oscillations—“satellites” irregularly distributed in frequency. These satellites, as the authors believe, testify to the presence of the individual groups of protons of low concentration whose velocities vary within 103–104 km s?1.Their energy is only of the order of 10?2–10?3 of the energy of the main proton flux. Clearly pronounced maxima on double and triple frequencies ? = 2?s0and 3?s0 are detected. They show that the generation of pulsations PC-1 is accompanied by the generation on the overtones of wave packets called in this paper “two-fold” and “three-fold” pulsations PC-1. Intensive symmetrical satellites of a modulation character have been discovered on frequencies ?±sK. Frequency differences Δ?sK± = ¦?s0 ? ?sK±¦ = (0.011,0.022 and 0.035) Hz correspond to them. The authors believe that the values of Δ?±sK are resonance frequencies of the magnetospheric cavity in which geomagnetic pulsations PC-1 are generated. It is established that the values of Δ?±sK coincide closely with the carrier frequencies of geomagnetic pulsations PC-3 and PC-4 generated in the magnetosphere. This leads to the conclusion that the resonance oscillations of the magnetospheric cavity are their source. Thus, the generation of geomagnetic pulsations of different types and resonance oscillations in the magnetosphere are integrated into a unified process. The importance of the results obtained and the necessity to check further their trustworthiness and universality, using experimental data gathered in different conditions, is stressed.  相似文献
