Gaseous ammonia (NH3) has long been recognized as a primary source of microwave opacity in the atmosphere of Jupiter. In order to more accurately infer the abundance and distribution of ammonia from radio emission measurements in the 1 to 20-cm wavelength range and radio occultation measurements at 3.6 and 13 cm, we have made measurements of the microwave opacity from gaseous ammonia under simulated conditions for the Jovian atmosphere. Measurements of ammonia absorptivity were made at five frequencies from 1.62 to 21.7 GHz (wavelengths from 18.5 to 1.38 cm), at temperatures from 178 to 300°K, and at pressures from 1 to 6 atm, in a 90% hydrogen/10% helium atmosphere. The results of these measurements show that in the 1.38- to 18.5-cm wavelength range, the absorption from gaseous ammonia is correctly expressed by the modified Ben-Reuven lineshape as per G.L. Berge and S. Gulkis (1976, Earth-based radio observations of Jupiter: Millimeter to meter wavelengths. In Jupiter (T. Gehrels, Ed.), pp. 621–692, Univ. of Arizona Press, Tucson). When applied to the microwave opacity measured by radio occultation measurements, or the microwave opacity inferred from radio emmission measurements, these results suggest that either an abundance of ammonia 1.5 to 2.0 times greater than the solar abundance must exist at levels below the 1- to 2-bar pressure range, or that some other microwave absorber must be present. We conclude by suggesting further laboratory measurements of other potential microwave-absorbing constituents and additional investigation of the microwave absorption from ammonia in the 10- to 20-cm wavelength range and at wavelengths shortward of 1 cm.  相似文献

Laboratory measurements of the microwave opacity of gaseous sulfuric acid under Venus atmospheric conditions indicate that it is an exceptionally strong absorber. They also suggest that its absorptivity has a surprisingly weak dependence on radio frequency, as compared with other common gaseous absorbers. Initial theoretical studies also indicate a large absorptivity and weak frequency dependence, although the measured opacity is several times the computed value, presumably due to deviations from Van Vleck-Weisskopf theory for pressures near and above about 1 atm. The absorbing characteristics of sulfuric acid vapor appear to reconcile what had been thought to be an inconsistency among measurements and deductions concerning the constituents of the atmosphere of Venus, and radio occultation, radar reflection, and radio emission measurements of its opacity. These and previous laboratory measurements of sulfur dioxide, water vapor, and carbon dioxide are used to model relative contributions to opacity as a function of height, in a way that is consistent with observations of the constituents and absorbing properties of the atmosphere. We conclude that sulfuric acid vapor is likely to be the principal microwave absorber in the 30- to 50-km-altitude range of the middle atmosphere of Venus. It would need to have a mixing ratio there of about 35 to 90 ppm if it were the sole absorber. Carbon dioxide, the predominant atmospheric gas, is the main absorber below about 30 km, while sulfur dioxide is an important but secondary absorber in both regions. Water vapor and cloud particulates appear to be only minor contributors to the total opacity. While gaseous sulfuric acid has not been directly measured in any of the in situ probe experiments (due to particular instrumental limitations), its presence at an abundance of the deduced order of magnitude is implied by these and other observations. We suggest that improved radio occultation measurements, in conjuction with high-resolution microwave emission observations and more detailed laboratory studies, could provide important data for investigating the sulfur compound chemistry in the atmosphere of Venus, and that the techniques and results may have application to the study of atmospheric conditions associated with acid rain on Earth.  相似文献

Precise relative measurements of the disk brightness temperatures of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have been made at a mean wavelength of 1.4 mm. The rings of Saturn contribute significantly to the observed total emission. Other results include a better understanding of the properties of the NRAO 11-m antenna near its high frequency limit and of atmospheric degradation of observations in this wavelength range.  相似文献

We present new 6.0 and 21.1 cm interferometric observations of Venus. When combined with our previous 3.12 cm work they provide s self-consistent set of high-resolution observations at three wavelengths covering a range in which the opacity of the Venus atmosphere varies by a factor of 50. Model calculations indicate that a model atmosphere of CO2 in adiabatic equilibrium containing uniformly mixed gaseous absorbers surrounding a dielectric sphere cannot simultaneously and adequately predict the radio interferometric measurements at all wavelengths together with the radar and radio occultation measurements.  相似文献

Laboratory measurements of the microwave opacity of HCl in a CO2 atmosphere have been conducted in the S (13.3 cm), X (3.6 cm), and K (1.4 cm) microwave bands at a pressure of 7.2 bar and at two different mixing ratios. The results are consistent with an opacity model employing the Van Vleck-Weisskopf lineshape applied to the published submillimeter line intensities of HCl (JPL Catalog [Pickett et al., 1998, J. Quant. Spectrosc. Rad. Trans. 60, 883-890]) and empirically fitted with a modeled parameter for CO2 broadening. Based on the deep atmospheric abundance of HCl inferred from near-infrared measurements [Dalton et al., 2000, Bull. Am. Astron. Soc. 32, 1120], the resulting modeled HCl opacity is constrained to have a small effect on the overall microwave absorption spectrum of Venus, but can be used in developing a more accurate radiative transfer model.  相似文献

The cumulene carbenes are important components of hydrocarbon chemistry in low-mass star-forming cores. Here we report the first astronomical detection of the long-chain cumulene carbene H2C6 in the interstellar cloud TMC-1, from observations of two of its rotational transitions: J(K,K') = 7(1,7) --> 6(1,6) at 18.8 GHz and 8(1,8) --> 7(1,7) at 21.5 GHz, using NASA's Deep Space Network 70 m antenna at Goldstone, California. In addition we also observed the shorter cumulene carbene H2C4 at the same position. The fractional abundance of H2C6 relative to H2 is about 4.7 x 10(-11) and that of H2C4 is about 4.1 x 10(-9). The abundance of H2C6 is in fairly good agreement with gas-phase chemical models for young molecular cloud cores, but the abundance of H2C4 is significantly larger than predicted.  相似文献

We review the progress in our understanding of the composition of the Venus atmosphere since the publication of the COSPAR Venus International Reference Atmosphere volume in 1985. Results presented there were derived from data compiled in 1982–1983. More recent progress has resulted in large part from Earth-based studies of the near-infrared radiation from the nightside of the planet. These observations allow us to probe the atmosphere between the cloud tops and the surface. Additional insight has been gained through: (i) the analysis of ultraviolet radiation by satellites and rockets; (ii) data collected by the Vega 1 and 2 landers; (iii) complementary analyses of Venera 15 and 16 data; (iv) ground-based and Magellan radio occultation measurements, and (v) re-analyses of some spacecraft measurements made before 1983, in particular the Pioneer Venus and Venera 11, 13 and 14 data. These new data, and re-interpretations of older data, provide a much better knowledge of the vertical profile of water vapor, and more information on sulfur species above and below the clouds, including firm detections of OCS and SO. In addition, some spatial and/or temporal variations have been observed for CO, H2O, H2SO4, SO2, and OCS. New values of the D/H ratio have also been obtained.  相似文献

Close to 2000 laboratory measurements of the microwave opacity and refractivity of gaseous NH3 in an H2/He atmosphere have been conducted in the 1.1-20 cm wavelength range (1.5-27 GHz) at pressures from 30 mbar to 12 bar and at temperatures from 184 to 450 K. The mole fraction of NH3 ranged from 0.06 to 6% with some additional measurements of pure NH3. The high accuracy of these results have enabled development of a new model for the opacity of NH3 in a H2/He atmosphere under jovian conditions. The model employs the Ben-Reuven lineshape applied to the published inversion line center frequencies and intensities of NH3 (JPL Catalog—[Pickett, H.M., Poynter, R.L., Cohen, E.A., Delitsky, M.L., Pearson, J.C., Müller, H.S.P., 1998. J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Trans. 60, 883-890]) with empirically-fitted line parameters for H2 and He broadening, and for the self-broadening of some previously unmeasured ammonia inversion lines. The new model for ammonia opacity will provide reliable results for temperatures from 150 to 500 K, at pressures up to 50 bar and at frequencies up to 40 GHz. These results directly impact the retrieval of jovian atmospheric constituent abundances from the Galileo Probe radio signal absorption measurements, from microwave emission measurements conducted with Earth-based radio telescopes and with the future NASA Juno mission, and studies of Saturn's atmosphere conducted with the Cassini Radio Science Experiment and the Cassini RADAR 2.1 cm passive radiometer.  相似文献

Usually the gyrosynchrotron emission of microwave bursts from electron populations with a power-law (PL) energy distribution has been considered under the assumption that the spectral index of the distribution is constant over a wide range of energies. Meanwhile, there is strong evidence, in particular from hard X-ray and -ray, but also from cm/mm wavelength radio observations, that in many solar flare events the spectrum of the emitting electrons is characterized by a significant hardening at energies above 100–500 keV. We present some examples of calculated microwave burst spectra at cm/mm wavelengths taking into account the above evidence. It is shown that a break in the energy spectrum of the PL electrons can indeed result in a spectral hardening sometimes observed in microwave bursts at frequencies above 10–30 GHz.  相似文献

We probed for radio frequency interference (RFI) at three potential galactic emission mapping experiment (GEM) sites in Portugal using custom made omnidirectional disconic antennas and directional pyramidal horn antennas. For the installation of a 10-m dish dedicated to the mapping of polarized galactic emission foreground planned for 2005–2007 in the 5–10 GHz band, the three sites chosen as suitable to host the antenna were surveyed for local radio pollution in the frequency range 0.01–10 GHz. Tests were done to look for radio broadcasting and mobile phone emission lines in the radio spectrum. The results show one of the sites to be almost entirely RFI clean and showing good conditions to host the experiment.  相似文献

L1498 is a classic example of a dense cold pre-protostellar core. To study the evolutionary status, the structure, dynamics, and chemical properties of this core we have obtained high spatial and high spectral resolution observations of molecules tracing densities of 10(3)-10(5) cm-3. We observed CCS, NH3, C3H2, and HC7N with NASA's DSN 70 m antennas. We also present large-scale maps of C18O and 13CO observed with the AT&T 7 m antenna. For the high spatial resolution maps of selected regions within the core we used the VLA for CCS at 22 GHz, and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) MMA for CCS at 94 GHz and CS (2-1). The 22 GHz CCS emission marks a high-density [n(H2) > 10(4) cm -3] core, which is elongated with a major axis along the SE-NW direction. NH3 and C3H2 emissions are located inside the boundary of the CCS emission. C18O emission traces a lower density gas extending beyond the CCS boundary. Along the major axis of the dense core, CCS, NH3 and C3H2 emission show evidence of limb brightening. The observations are consistent with a chemically differentiated onion-shell structure for the L1498 core, with NH3 in the inner and CCS in the outer parts of the core. The high angular resolution (9"-12") spectral line maps obtained by combining NASA Goldstone 70 m and VLA data resolve the CCS 22 GHz emission in the southeast and northwest boundaries into arclike enhancements, supporting the picture that CCS emission originates in a shell outside the NH3 emitting region. Interferometric maps of CCS at 94 GHz and CS at 98 GHz show that their emitting regions contain several small-scale dense condensations. We suggest that the differences between the CCS, CS, C3H2, and NH3 emission are caused by a time-dependent effect as the core evolves slowly. We interpret the chemical and physical properties of L1498 in terms of a quasi-static (or slowly contracting) dense core in which the outer envelope is still growing. The growth rate of the core is determined by the density increase in the CCS shell resulting from the accretion of the outer low-density gas traced by C18O. We conclude that L1498 could become unstable to rapid collapse to form a protostar in less than 5 x 10(6) yr.  相似文献

We present multi-frequency observations and model computations of the microwave emission of a solar active region. The radio observations were obtained with the RATAN-600 at several wavelengths between 0.8 and 31.6 cm and with the VLA at 6 and 20 cm. The active region was also observed in the EUV O Iv lines by the HRTS instrument aboard the Space Shuttle Spacelab-2 mission. These lines are formed in the chromosphere-corona transition region and their intensity ratio is sensitive to pressure. Photospheric magnetograms provided both the longitudinal and the transverse component of the magnetic field. The microwave observations were checked against model computations taking into account both the free-free and the gyro-resonance emission mechanisms and using the pressure data from the O IV lines. The magnetic field was computed through constant- force-free extrapolations of the longitudinal photospheric field. We computed both the flux from 2 to 20 cm and the spatial structure of the microwave emission at 6 and 20 cm. The comparison of the computed and observed flux spectra allowed us to estimate the magnetic field strength at the base of the transition region and in the low corona, as well as the values of the conductive flux and the height of the base of the transition region. The model maps at 6 cm and 20 cm showed that was not constant above the active region; the same conclusion was reached on the basis of the photospheric observations. The use of pressure measurements allowed us to identify microwave structures which were determined by pressure enhancements. At 6 cm the computations confirmed the fact that the magnetic field is the principal factor that determines the structure of sunspot-associated sources and showed that the effect of pressure variations was small. Pressure variations were more important at 20 cm, where the peak of the emission was associated with the sunspot and a diffuse component was associated with the plage which had an average pressure higher by a factor of 1.54 than the sunspot.  相似文献

In July 2015 intercontinental bistatic radar observations of the potentially dangerous asteroid 2011 UW158 during its close approach to the Earth were carried out. The asteroid was illuminated at a frequency of 8.4 GHz with the 70-m DSS-14 antenna of the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex, while the signal reflected from the asteroid was received with the 32-m radio telescopes of the Quasar VLBI network at the Zelenchukskaya and Badary Observatories. The spectra of the reflected radio signals were obtained. The sizes and rotation period of the asteroid consistent with photometric observations and the ratio of the powers of the reflected signals with left- and right-hand circular polarizations were determined. The derived values suggest that the asteroid has an inhomogeneous surface and a prolate shape. The observations of the Doppler shift of the reflected signal frequency were obtained, which allowed the orbital parameters of the asteroid to be improved.  相似文献

Measurements have been made of the atmospheric gaseous emission spectrum in the region from 85–118 GHz (wavelength range 3·5–2·5 mm), and the results have been used to estimate the attenuation in the zenith direction over this range, which includes the low frequency side of the oxygen absorption line centered at 118·75 GHz. The results are compared with theoretical predictions based on line shape models in current use, and the discrepancies between experiment and theory are discussed.  相似文献

Ground-based observations of Venus were made with a 5-cm drive Michelson interferometer during December 1970 and December 1973. The thermal emission spectrum of the central portion of the apparent disk was recorded from 450–1250 cm?1 with an apodized spectral resolution of 0.25 cm?1. All statistically significant sharp line absorption features in the spectrum have been identified with gaseous CO2. Comparison between the observed spectrum and a synthetic spectrum computed from a model atmosphere, assuming gaseous CO2 and a sulfuric acid haze as opacity sources, indicates good agreement. A broad diffuse absorption feature associated with the sulfuric acid haze is evident in the 870- to 930 cm?1 region. With the exception of the rotational lines of the 927-cm?1 CO2 band, the above feature appears as a continuum down to 0.25 cm?1 resolution. In the 750- to 1250-cm?1 range, the spectrum exhibits moderate thermal contrast with maximum brightness temperatures of 234–238°K occurring near 825 cm?1. These temperatures are in general agreement with previous measurements.  相似文献

A spectrum of Triton between 6000 and 9000 Å was recorded in June 1980 at the ESO 1.52-m telescope in La Silla. From these data, an upper limit of 3.5 m-am is derived for the CH4 gaseous abundance on Triton.  相似文献

Submillimeter line observations of CO in the Venus middle atmosphere (mesosphere) were observed with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT, Mauna Kea) about the May 2000, February 2002 superior and July 1999, March 2001 inferior conjunctions of Venus. Combined 12CO and 13CO isotope spectral line measurements at 345 and 330 gHz frequencies, respectively, provided enhanced sensitivity and vertical coverage for simultaneous retrievals of atmospheric temperatures and CO mixing ratios over the altitude region 75-105 km with vertical resolution 4-5 km. Supporting millimeter 12CO spectral line observations with the Kitt Peak 12-m telescope (Steward Observatories) provide enhanced temporal coverage and CO mixing sensitivity. Implementation of CO/temperature profile retrievals for the 2000, 2002 dayside (superior conjunction) and 1999, 2001 nightside (inferior conjunction) periods yields a first-time definition of the vertical structure and diurnal variation of a low-to-mid-latitude mesopause within the Venus atmosphere. At the times of these 1999-2002 observations, the Venus mesopause was located at a slightly lower level in the nightside (0.5 mbar, ∼87 km) versus the dayside (0.2 mbar, ∼91 km) atmosphere. Average diurnal variation of Venus mesospheric temperatures appears to be ≤ 5 K at and below the mesopause. Diurnal variation of Venus thermospheric temperatures increases abruptly just above the mesopause, reaching 50 K by the 0.01-mbar pressure level (∼102 km). Atmospheric temperatures above and below the Venus mesopause exhibited global-scale (≥4000 km horizontal) variations of large amplitude (7-15 K) on surprisingly short timescales (daily to monthly) during the 2001 nightside and 2002 dayside observing periods. Venus dayside mesospheric temperatures observed during the 2002 superior conjunction were also 10-15 K warmer than observed during the 2000 superior conjunction. A characteristic timescale for these global temperature variations is not defined, but their magnitude is comparable to previous determinations of secular variability in nightside mesospheric temperatures (Clancy and Muhleman, 1991).  相似文献

Recent papers attributing the observed microwave opacity of the middle atmosphere of Venus to gaseous sulfur dioxide (SO2) and other cloud-related gases have motivated laboratory measurements of their microwave absorbing properties under simulated conditions for this region. In the pressure range from 1 to 5 atmospheres and in the temperature range from 297 to 355°K, the absorption of SO2 in a carbon dioxide (CO2) atmosphere, at 2.257 and 8.342 GHz, has been found to be approximately 50% larger than that calculated from Van Vleck-Weisskopf theory. The measured absorption is about 25 × 106 q?2p1.20 T?3.1 (dB km?1), where q is the sulfur dioxide number mixing ratio, ? is frequency in gigahertz, p is pressure in atmospheres, and T is temperature in degrees Kelvin. This represents the best-fit expression to the observed pressure dependence, while theoretical values of frequency and temperature dependence are accepted as being consistent with the measurements. Another cloud-related gas, sulfur trioxide (SO3), was also tested in a CO2 atmosphere and found to be relatively transparent. These results reduce the amount of SO2 in the Venus middle atmosphere required to explain the opacity measured by radio occulatation, but this amount still exceeds the abundance measured in situ by atmospheric probes, suggesting that there must be another important source of opacity. Preliminary measurements of the 13-cm absorptivity of gaseous sulfuric acid (H2SO4) show it to be a strong microwave absorber, and thus likely to be responsible for a significant and possibly major part of the observed opacity.  相似文献

Thirty well-exposed photographic plates showing the spectrum of the carbon-dioxide band at 8689 Å in the atmosphere of Venus were obtained during 1968 and 1969. All spectra were obtained at a dispersion of 2 Å/mm for Venus phase angles varying from 10° to 126°. We find rotational temperatures ranging from 236 to 274 K. The average value of the rotational temperature is 246 ± 1 K (one standard deviation); for our 1967 observations, the rotational temperatures ranged from 222 to 248 K, with an average value of 238 ± 4 K. The variation of the equivalent width of the 8689 Å band, with Venus phase angle, was very similar for the two sets of observations (53 plates). The temporal variations, of approximately 30% were comparable with the phase variations over this limited range of phase angle.  相似文献

Chemical kinetic model for the lower atmosphere of Venus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A self-consistent chemical kinetic model of the Venus atmosphere at 0-47 km has been calculated for the first time. The model involves 82 reactions of 26 species. Chemical processes in the atmosphere below the clouds are initiated by photochemical products from the middle atmosphere (H2SO4, CO, Sx), thermochemistry in the lowest 10 km, and photolysis of S3. The sulfur bonds in OCS and Sx are weaker than the bonds of other elements in the basic atmospheric species on Venus; therefore the chemistry is mostly sulfur-driven. Sulfur chemistry activates some H and Cl atoms and radicals, though their effect on the chemical composition is weak. The lack of kinetic data for many reactions presents a problem that has been solved using some similar reactions and thermodynamic calculations of inverse processes. Column rates of some reactions in the lower atmosphere exceed the highest rates in the middle atmosphere by two orders of magnitude. However, many reactions are balanced by the inverse processes, and their net rates are comparable to those in the middle atmosphere. The calculated profile of CO is in excellent agreement with the Pioneer Venus and Venera 12 gas chromatographic measurements and slightly above the values from the nightside spectroscopy at 2.3 μm. The OCS profile also agrees with the nightside spectroscopy which is the only source of data for this species. The abundance and vertical profile of gaseous H2SO4 are similar to those observed by the Mariner 10 and Magellan radio occultations and ground-based microwave telescopes. While the calculated mean S3 abundance agrees with the Venera 11-14 observations, a steep decrease in S3 from the surface to 20 km is not expected from the observations. The ClSO2 and SO2Cl2 mixing ratios are ∼10−11 in the lowest scale height. The existing concept of the atmospheric sulfur cycles is incompatible with the observations of the OCS profile. A scheme suggested in the current work involves the basic photochemical cycle, that transforms CO2 and SO2 into SO3, CO, and Sx, and a minor photochemical cycle which forms CO and Sx from OCS. The net effect of thermochemistry in the lowest 10 km is formation of OCS from CO and Sx. Chemistry at 30-40 km removes the downward flux of SO3 and the upward flux of OCS and increases the downward fluxes of CO and Sx. The geological cycle of sulfur remains unchanged.  相似文献
