We present results of polarimetric and photometric observations of bright comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) obtained at the 0.7 m telescope of Kharkov University Observatory from June 18, 1996 to April 24, 1997. The IHW and HB comet filters were used. The C2 and C3 production rates for Hale-Bopp are more than one order of magnitude larger and the dust production rates are more than two orders of magnitude larger than the Halley ones at comparable distances. Hence, Hale-Bopp was one of the most dusty comets. The average UC-BC and BC-RC colours of the dust were −0.02 and 0.13 mag, respectively. The polarization of comet Hale-Bopp at small phase angles of 4.8–13.0° was in good agreement with the date for comet P1/Halley at the same phase angles in spite of the fact that the heliocentric distances of comments differed nearly twice. However, at intermediate phase angles of 34–49° the polarization of comet Hale-Bopp was significantly larger than the polarization of the other dusty comets. It is the first case of such a large difference found in the continuum polarization of comets. The wavelength dependence of polarization for Hale-Bopp was steeper than for other dusty comets. The observed degree of polarization for the anti-sunward side of the coma was permanently higher than that for the sunward shell side. The polarization phase dependence of Hale-Bopp is discussed and compared with the polarization curves for other dusty comets. The peculiar polarimetric properties of comet Hale-Bopp are most likely caused by an over-abundance of small or/and absorbing dust particles in the coma. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We present results of polarimetry and photometry of comet C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) obtained with the 0.7-m telescope of Institute of Astronomy at the Karazin Kharkiv National University on February 3 and 4, and March 4 and 14, 2005. The observations were carried out with a one-channel photoelectric photometer-polarimeter. The IHW continuum UC (λ3650/80 Å), BC (λ4845/65 Å), RC (λ6840/90 Å) and emission filters CN (λ3871/50 Å), C3 (λ4060/70 Å), and C2 (λ5140/90 Å) were used. Degree of the comet polarization at phase angles ≈ 52° and ≈44° in the red continuum was close to that for so called dusty comets. The comet had a typical spectral gradient of polarization ΔP/Δλ=0.86% per 1000 Å. In the framework of the Haser model we have found the gas production rates Q of the CN, C3 and C2 species and the dust production rates Afρ on February 4 and March 14, 2005. The ratio log[Afρ (BC)/Q(CN)] was compared with data for other comets. The normalized spectral gradient of cometary dust S’(BC,RC) was 8.7%/1000 Å for February 4 and 17.0%/1000 Å for March 14. We conclude that comet C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) in many respects is a typical dusty comet.  相似文献

We present the results of polarimetric and photometric observations of dynamically new comet C/2002 T7 (LINEAR) at phase angles from 6° to 26°. During the observations, the comet was at a distance of 2.7–1.3 AU from the Sun and 1.7–2.0 AU from the Earth. The aperture polarimetry was made with the 2.6-m Shain telescope and the 1.25-m AZT-11 telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory and with the 0.7-m telescope of the Astronomical Institute of the Kharkiv National University during the period from November 21, 2003, to February 21, 2004. The wideband UBVRI and WRC (λ7228/1142 Å) filters and the narrowband GC (λ5260/56 Å) filter were used. The photometric observations of the comet were carried out on February 21, 2004, with narrowband filters isolated the BC (λ4845/65 Å) and RC (λ6840/90 Å) continuum and the C2 emission (λ5140/90 Å). The phase-angle dependence of linear polarization of the comet has been obtained, and its parameters, such as the minimal polarization P min = ?1.63%, the phase angle of the minimal polarization αmin = 10.6°, the inversion angle αinv = 22.7°, and the slope of the phase curve at the inversion angle h = 0.24% per degree, were found. From the photometric observations, the following quantities have been obtained: the column density of molecules C2 in the line of sight logN (C2) = ?9.15 mol/cm2 and their production rate log Q (C2) = 27.11 mol/s, the spectral gradient of reflectivity for the dust S′(BC, RC) ≈ 3%/1000 Å, and the dust production parameter Afρ equal to 371 and 273 cm for the blue and red continuum ranges, respectively. According to these results, the physical parameters of comet C/2002 T7 are close to the average characteristics of typical dusty comets.  相似文献

Post-perihelion observed emission fluxes at 388 nm (CN) and 516 nm (C2) of the coma of comets Austin (1982g) and Bradfield (1980t) are analysed in the framework of the Haser model. Ratios of Haser model CN and C2 parent production rates with expansion velocity show that each comet behaves normally. For comet Austin (1982g), the Q CN/v and Q c2/v values decrease with increase of heliocentric distance of comet. For an assumed %; activity of the total spherical surface area of the nucleus, the water vaporization theory coupled with derived water production rates from the International Ultraviolet Explorer H and OH flux data yields a nuclear diameter of about 6 km for comet Austin (1982g). For comet Bradfield (1980t), the derived nuclear diameter is expected to be of about 1 km. In each comet, the dust mass production rates as well as ratio of dust-to-gas mass production rates decrease with increase of heliocentric distance of comet.  相似文献

Systematic and uniform sets of photometric and polarimetric observations of comet 1P/Halley have been analyzed. The phase dependence of brightness for comet Halley was obtained at phase angles α ranging from 1.4° ≤ α ≤ 65°. The following parameters were determined: the amplitude of the opposition effect Δm = 0.75m ± 0.06m; the half-width at a half-maximum of intensity HWHM = 6.4° ± 1.6°; the linear phase coefficient β = 0.0045 ± 0.0001 mag/deg for α from 30° ≤ α ≤ 65°; and the phase angle at which a nonlinear increase in brightness starts, α opp ≈ 31°. For the first time, the phase-angle dependence was obtained for the color of the dust of comet Halley: the color index BC-RC systematically decreases with increasing phase angle. Such a phase behavior of the dust color can be caused by the decrease in the mean size of dust particles that occurs when the comet approaches the Sun. For comet Halley, the negative polarization branch is almost symmetric; the minimal value of polarization is P min = −1.54% at a phase angle αmin = 10.5°, and the inversion angle is αinv = 21.7°. A comparative analysis of the phase functions of brightness and polarization has been performed for the cometary dust and atmosphereless bodies. Among the latter are low-albedo asteroids of the P and C types (102 Miriam and 47 Aglaja, respectively), as well as Deimos; high-albedo objects, such as the E-type asteroid 64 Angelina and the icy satellite of Jupiter Europa; and the Moon with its intermediate albedo. The possibility of a weak depression in the negative polarization branch of comets Halley and 47P/Ashbrook-Jackson at phase angles smaller than 2° is discussed.__________Translated from Astronomicheskii Vestnik, Vol. 39, No. 4, 2005, pp. 353–363.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Rosenbush.  相似文献

We present the results of polarimetric and photometricobservations of split Comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR), which wereobtained at the 70-cm telescope of the Astronomical Observatoryof Kharkiv National University between 30 June and 31 July 2001.The brightest fragment of the comet, nucleus B, was observed.Eight narrowband cometary filters in the continuum and in emissionbands and a wideband red filter have been used. The comet wasobserved through apertures of 88, 33, and 19 arcsec. Polarizationphase curves were obtained for the continuum and for the firsttime, for NH2(0, 7, 0) emission. The degree of polarization ofthe light scattered by the dust decreases with the increase ofaperture size. An important temporal variation of the polarizationwith a rotation of the polarization plane was observed at twophase angles (26.5° and 36.2°). Molecular column densities and production rates of CN, C2,C3, and NH2 species are calculated in the framework of theHaser model. A comparative analysis of the temporal variations ofthe visual magnitudes, gas and dust production rates, dust colorand polarization are presented.  相似文献

We present results and analysis of imaging polarimetric observations of Comet 2P/Encke. The observations were carried out at the 2-m RCC telescope of the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory on December 13, 1993 and on January 14, 1994, at phase angles 51.1° and 80.5°, respectively. A wide-band red filter 6940/790 Å was used. This filter is transparent for the continuum and the weak emission bands of NH2 and H2O+. There is a sunward dust fan with well-defined polarization, which peaks at≈13% in the image obtained on January 14, 1994. Along the sunward fan the degree of polarization decreases progressively. Outside of the fan the coma displays a low polarization of ≈3%. We suggest that this low polarization is caused by the NH2 emission in the pass-band of the red wide-band filter. Assuming a spherically symmetric NH2 coma we are able to correct the observed polarization for this effect. The correction leads to an increase of the observed polarization by 1 to 4% at distances 10,000 and 1500 km from the nucleus. A rough estimate shows that the polarization in the near nucleus region of Comet Encke is similar to that for the dusty comets. Even after correction the polarization of Comet Encke's dust fan is significantly less that the polarization observed in dusty comets. The reasons influencing the distribution of dust polarization in the coma are discussed. More polarimetric and colorimetric observations of the dust in Comet Encke on its return in 2003 are needed.  相似文献

This work was carried out with the PROGRA2 experiment developed to measure the angular dependence of the polarization of light scattered by dust particles. The dust samples are fluffy aggregates (size range 0.01-1 mm) with constituent grains of about 10 nm. Various setups were used: samples deposited on surfaces, the same samples lifted under the effect of a draft, and particles levitating in microgravity conditions on board the CNES dedicated aircraft. For deposited particles, the maximum value of polarization (Pmax) follows the Umov law. For a cloud of particles (Pmax) near 100° phase angle decreases when: (i) multiple scattering between the particles—or between the grains inside the particles—increases, or (ii) the real part of the refractive index of the materials increases, or (iii) the size parameter of the constituent grains increases between 0.05 and 0.5. A negative branch in the polarization phase curve is found for deposited samples. For levitating particles made of a single material and a single size distribution, a positive increase of polarization appears at phase angles smaller than 20°; for mixtures of these materials the polarization is negative at the same phase angles. These results are compared to modeling results as well as to polarimetric observations of comets.  相似文献

We present the imaging polarimetry and photometry of Comet C/1996 Q1 (Tabur) obtained on October 10, 1996, with a two-channel focal reducer attached to the 2-m Pik Terskol Observatory telescope through blue (4430/44 Å) and red (6420/26 Å) continuum filters and through a 6620/59 Å filter that isolated the NH2(0.7.0) band. We analyze the 3600–9300 Å long-slit spectrograms of the comet taken on October 5–6, 1996, with the 2.6-m Crimean Astrophysical Observatory telescope. The NH2(0.8.0) 6408 Å emission and an unidentified 6428 Å emission were found to fall within the pass band of the red filter. The blue filter transmits weak unidentified emissions at 4424–4444 Å and partially C2(4360 Å). Correction for the depolarizing effect of molecular emissions resulted in an increase of the dust polarization by 2–4% in the near-nucleus region and by almost a factor of 2 in the outer coma regions. However, the polarization and color differences between different coma regions remained even after correction for the contribution of emissions. We found no dust polarization difference between the gas comet Tabur and the dust comet C/1988 A1 (Liller), which are believed to be fragments of a common parent comet. The NH2coma was found to be elongated perpendicular to the comet radius vector. The causes of the spatial asymmetry in the NH2molecular distribution are yet to be established. We study the evolution of activity and the spatial distribution of dust brightness, polarization, and color in the comet. We consider a taxonomic classification of gas and dust comets according to dust polarization properties. The polarization differences between dust and gas comets at large phase angles are most likely related both to the actual differences in dust and to the effect of molecular emissions, nuclear gas- and dust-production rates and to the evolution of grain properties with distance from the nucleus.  相似文献

Comets, such as C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), are important to studies of the origins of the solar system because they are believed to be frozen reservoirs of the most primitive pre-solar dust grains and ices. Here, we report 1.2–18.5 μm infrared (IR) spectrophotometric and polarimetric observations of comet Hale-Bopp. Our measurements of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and IR polarization near perhelion passage suggest that emission from the coma was dominated by scattering and thermal emission from sub-micron sized dust grains. Hale-Bopp's surprising brightness may have been largely a result of the properties of its coma grains rather than the size of its nucleus. The thermal emission continuum from the grains had a superheat of S = Tcolor/TBB ≥ 1.7, the peak of the 10 μm silicate emission feature was 1.7 mags above the carbon grain continuum, and the albedo (reflectivity) of the grains was ≥ 0.4 at a scattering angles, θ ≥ 135° This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of polarization observations of asteroid 554 Peraga obtained with the UBVRI polarimeter using the 1.25 m telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory down to phase angles of 3.1°–16.6° from October to November 2006. The asteroid’s polarization phase curve is shown to have a negative branch with the parameters P min = −1.7% and αmin = 8.4°, which is typical of C-type asteroids. However, these data contradict the results of Zellner and Gradie (1976) obtained in March 1975 that the reflected light from the asteroid’s surface is positively polarized, ≈1% at phase angles of 8°–10°. Since the asteroid’s ecliptic longitudes differ by 160°-145° for the two observation periods, we discuss the possibility that the two sets of observations refer to the asteroid’s two hemispheres with different polarimetric properties.  相似文献

The dust coma of Comet P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko was monitored in the infrared (1–20 μm) from September 1982 to March 1983. Maximum dust production rate of ~2 × 105 g/sec occured in December, 1 month postperihelion. The ratio of dust/gas production was higher than that in other short-period comets. No silicate feature was visible in the 8- to 13-μm spectrum on 23 October. The mean geometric albedo of the grains was ~0.04 at 1.25 μm and ~0.05 at 2.2 μm.  相似文献

Optical observations of comets and atmosphereless celestial bodies show that a change of sign of the linear polarization of scattered light from negative to positive at phase angles less than 20° is typical of the cometary coma, as well as of the regolith of Mercury, the Moon, planetary satellites, and asteroids. To explain a negative branch of polarization, this research suggests a unified approach to the treatment of cometary-dust particles and regolith grains as aggregate forms. A composite structure of aggregate particles resulting in the interaction of composing structural elements (monomers) in the light-scattering process is responsible for the negative polarization at small phase angles, if the monomer sizes are comparable to the wavelength. The characteristics of single scattering of light calculated for aggregates of this kind turned out to be close to the properties observed for cometary dust. Unlike the cometary coma, the regolith is an optically semi-infinite medium, where the interaction between particles is significant. To find the reflectance characteristics of regolith, the radiative-transfer equation should be solved for a regolith layer. In this case, the interaction between scatterers can be modeled to a certain extent by representing the regolith grains as aggregate structures consisting of several or many elements. Although real regolith grains are much larger than the particles considered here, laboratory measurements have shown that it is precisely the surface irregularities comparable to the wavelength that cause a negative branch of polarization. The main observed features of the phase and spectral dependence of the linear polarization of light scattered from comets and atmosphereless celestial bodies, which are due to the difference of the elementary scatterers in composition, size, and structure, can be successfully explained using the aggregate model of particles.  相似文献

We report on the reduction and analysis of UVpolarimetric images of CI (λ1657 Å) and dust continuum (2696 Å emissions from C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) taken using the Wide Field Imaging Survey Polarimeter (WISP) sounding rocket on 8 April, 1997. These observations represent the first imaging polarimetry of comets in the UV, and were performed in consort with ground based measurements of gas and dust polarization and distribution. The continuum results show 9% polarization across the image field with a polarization phase angle close to the 129° prediction. Comparison with ground based data implies minimal color dependence for Hale-Bopp in either the degree of polarization and in the position angle. The carbon polarimetry implies that most production occurs in the dense inner coma, and that it leaves that area in thermodynamic equilibrium. Its radial profile further constrains the carbon outflow speed to be sufficient to travel ≥5 × 106 km without photoionization.  相似文献

The polarization of the continuum of Comet West 1976 VI was measured in four narrowband filters spanning the wavelengths 440–850 nm. The postperihelion observations indicated wavelength independent linear polarization on each of the three occasions on which it was measured. The wavelength independence is in agreement with other polarization measurements of this comet from the visible to the near-infrared, but it counters the general tendency in comets for the polarization to increase with wavelength. The magnitude of the polarization as a function of scattering angle, the wavelength independence, and the infrared and optical photometric properties suggests that dirty silicates (n1≈0.05) with radii smaller than 5 μm but approaching this size may be responsible. No circular polarization was detected.  相似文献

Photopolarimetric observations of comet Austin with the IAU/IHW filter system were obtained on the 2.34 m Vainu Bappu Telescope (VBT) of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, at Kavalur, India, during pre-perihelion phase on February 20,1990 and on the 1.2 m telescope of the Physical Research Laboratory at Gurusikhar, Mount Abu during postperihelion phase on May 2 and 4, 1990. The comet appeared bluer than a solar analog during post-perihelion phase on May 2 and 4. The percent polarization shows a sharp increase towards the red on May 2 and 4. The dominant sizes of the dust particles appear to lie in a narrow range of 0.1 to 0.5 Μm. Regarding the molecular band emission, CN and C2 bands are quite strong; C3 emission was also found to be strong though the observations on May 2 and 4 show significant variation as compared to C2 emission. Molecular band polarization for CN, C3, C2 and H2 O+ have been calculated. It has been found that emission polarization in CN, C2 and C3 is between 1–7% (phase angle between 107.4–109 degrees). For CN and C2 the polarization values are close to the theoretically predicted values, but for C3 the polarization value falls much below the theoretically predicted value. A similar result was found for comet Halley.  相似文献

Observations of near-Earth asteroids at large phase angles made it possible to obtain a more complete (for ground-based observations) phase dependence of the polarization of the E-type asteroids’ radiation including the maximum of the positive branch of the linear polarization degree. It is shown that the position of the polarization maximum of high-albedo asteroids is noticeably shifted to the decrease of phase angles compared with S-type asteroids. Model calculations of polarimetric properties of random Gaussian particles that simulate dust particles on the regolith surface are carried out. Model calculations show a qualitatively similar behavior pattern of parameters of the positive polarization branch. The influence of the refractive index of individual scattering particles on the size and position of the maximum of the positive branch of the linear polarization degree is investigated within the considered model.  相似文献

We present an analysis of the results of photometric investigations of two distant comets, C/2002 VQ94 (LINEAR) and 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann-1, obtained with the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The comets under study demonstrate sufficient activity out of the zone of water ice sublimation (at heliocentric distances longer than 5 AU). In the spectra of the investigated comets, we found the CO+ and N2+ emission. The presence of this emission may say that the comets were formed in the outer parts of the Solar System, in a protoplanetary cloud at a temperature ≤25 K. We found that the photometric maximum of the ionosphere (in the CO+ filter) of the comet C/2002 VQ94 (LINEAR) is shifted relative to the photometric center of the dust coma by 1.4″ (7.44 × 103 km) in the direction deflected by 63° from the direction to the Sun. Using special filters to process the images, we picked out active structures (jets) in the dust coma of the 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann-1 comet.  相似文献

We consider the Irvine-Yanovistkii modification of the shadow model developed by Hapke for the opposition effect of brightness. The relation between the single scattering albedo ω and the transparency coefficient of particles κ is suggested to be used in the form κ = (1 ? ω) n , which allows the number of unknowns in the model to be reduced to two parameters (the packing density of particles g and ω) and the single-scattering phase function χ(α). The analysis of spectrophotometric measurements of the moon and Mars showed that the data on the observed opposition effect and the changes in the color index with the phase angle α well agree if the values of n = 0.25 and g = 0.4 (the moon) and 0.6 (Mars) are assumed in calculations. When being applied to asteroids of several types, this method also yielded a satisfactory agreement. For the E-type asteroids, the sets of parameters are [g = 0.6, ω = 0.6, A g = 0.21, and q = 0.83] or [g = 0.3, ω = 0.4, A g = 0.15, and q = 0.71] under the Martian single-scattering phase function; for the M-type asteroids, it is [g = 0.4, ω ≤ 0.1, A g ≤ 0.075, and q ≤ 0.42] under the lunar single-scattering phase function; for the S-type asteroids, it is [g = 0.4, ω = 0.4, A g = 0.28, and q = 0.49] under the lunar single-scattering phase function; and for the C-type asteroids, it is [g = 0.6, ω ≤ 0.1, A g ≤ 0.075, and q = 0.43] under the modified lunar single-scattering phase function. The polarization measurements fulfilled by Gehrels et al. (1964) for the bright feature on the lunar surface, Copernicus (L = -20°08′, φ = +10°11′), at a phase angle α = 1.6° revealed the deviations in the position of the polarization plane from that typical for the negative branch. They were 22° and 12° in the G and I filters, respectively. At the same time, the deviation was within the error (±3°) in the U filter and for the dark feature Plato (L = -10°32′, φ = +51°25′), which can be caused by the coherent mechanism of the formation of the polarization peak.  相似文献

Comet C/2009 P1 (Garradd) was observed by imaging polarimetry for nearly 5 months from October 2011 to March 2012, over an intermediate phase angle range (28°–35°). Two months before perihelion and one month after, dust particles seem to be ejected all around the optocenter and jets extend to distances greater than 40,000 km. An increase of activity is noticed in intensity and polarization after perihelion. Two months before perihelion and one month after, the dust emission seems to be all around the optocenter. Two and three months after perihelion the jets are mainly toward the solar direction with an extension of more than 20,000 km projected on the sky. The values of the aperture polarization are comparable to those of other comets. On the polarization maps in October 2011 and January 2012 the higher polarization zones extend in large regions perpendicularly to the solar direction where jets are also observed. In February and March 2012, the polarization in the jets is larger in the solar direction than in the surrounding coma. By its activity visible on intensity images and polarization maps at large distances from the nucleus, comet Garradd probably belongs to the high‐Pmax class of comets.  相似文献
