The rates of photodissociation of the OH and OD molecules from absorption of solar radiation in he X2Π-A2Σ+ electronic transition are calculated to lie between 3.5 and 6.7 × 10?6 sec?1 for OH for heliocentric velocities between -60 and +60 km sec?1 and to be about 4.7 × 10?7 sec?1 for OD at 1 AU from the Sun. The corresponding lifetimes, which are upper bounds to the actual lifetimes, are generally consistent with the observational cometary data.  相似文献

Two monochromatic pictures of the Comet Kohoutek (1973f) were taken on January 15, 1974 in the resonance light (A2Σ ? X2 ∏) of the radical OH with a photographic telescope placed on board the NASA 990 Convair airplane. From an intensity profile we derive the production rate of OH radicals QOH = 4 xsx 1028 moleculesec ?1sr?1 at 0.6 AU and the lifetime of the OH radical which is τOH = 4.5 × 104 sec at 0.6 AU. This short lifetime (very similar to the lifetime of H2O) combined with the high total production rate of gas in comets can explain the observed velocity of 8km sec?1 for the H-atoms: The H-atoms produced by photodissociation of H2O are thermalized at short distancesfrom the nucleus; the H-atoms produced by photodissociation of OH have a velocity of ?8km sec?1 and can reach the outer part of the hydrogen envelope.  相似文献

A model for the hydrogen coma of a comet on the basis of the Monte Carlo method is presented. In this model isotropic ejections of H atoms produced by photodissociation of H2O and OH, thermalization of the H atoms due to collisions with ambient H2O molecules, and the solar radiation pressure have been taken into account. A production spectrum of H atoms from OH is evaluated by using the predissociation rates and the level populations of OH, confirming that the spectrum has a sharp peak around 8.0 km sec?1 with the standard deviation of 0.1 km sec?1. Including the above effects, velocity distribution functions of the H atoms at various positions in the coma for the first time, as well as their density and outflow velocity profiles, have been calculated. It is pointed out that the collisional thermalization process in the inner coma is an important factor at small heliocentric distances in determining the density profiles and the velocity distributions. It is shown that thermalization leads to an increase in the H density in the inner coma larger than those expected from other models such as the vectorial model, in which collision is not taken into account. Lyman α isophotes and its line profiles in the optically thin region are computed by using the velocity distribution function.  相似文献

Results of analysis of about 150 autocorrelation functions are presented for the period from about 2300 hr on 5 October to about 1200 hr on 7 October 1967. A large percentage concentration of helium ions are observed. It reaches a value as high as 50 per cent with a maximum at around 800 km. Downward heat fluxes deduced from the temperature variations yield a value of about 2–2.5 × 109 eV cm?2 sec?1 during the period 1200–1600 hr and a value of about 1.5 × 108 eV cm?2 sec?1 during the period 0100–0400 hr at night. These agree well with other measurements. The O+ ions are found not to be in diffusive equilibrium, and from the O+ fluxes and the electron density profiles, the O+ drift velocity has been estimated. It is found that the speed can be as high as 1–5 × 103 cm sec?1 even at altitudes as high as 700 km.  相似文献

This paper discusses SPA's measured at long VLF propagation paths in the lower ionosphere and their association with solar X-ray bursts observed by USNRL satellites in the 0–3 Å, 0–8 Å and 8–20 Å bands. Excellent correlations were found between the SPA importances (in degrees per Mm) and the logarithm of the X-ray burst peak intensities. A hardening of the X-ray burst spectra is evident for increasing importance of SPA's; the threshold energy required for the occurrence of such anomalies was estimated, it is 4.3×10?5 ergs cm?2 sec?1 in the main ionizing band of 0–3 Å. It was also possible to derive the effective recombination coefficient at the normal D-region height of 70 km, this beingα r≈6×10?6 cm3 sec?1; furthermore ion production rates were estimated during SPA's at heights below the reference level.  相似文献

Calculations of the steady-state photoelectron energy and angular distribution in the altitude region between 120 and 1000 km are presented. The distribution is found to be isotropic at all altitudes below 250 km, while above this altitude anisotropies in both pitch angle and energy are found. The isotropy found in the angular distribution below 250 km implies that photoelectron transport below 250 km is insignificant, while the angular anisotropy found above this altitude implies a net photoelectron current in the upward direction. The energy anisotropy above 500 km arises from the selective backscattering of the low energy photoelectron population of the upward flux component by Coulomb collisions with the ambient ions. The total photoelectron flux attains its maximum value between about 40 and 70 km above the altitude at which the photoelectron production rate is maximum. The displacement of the maximum of the equilibrium flux is attributed to an increasing (with altitude) photoelectron lifetime. Photoelectrons at altitudes above that where the flux is maximum are on the average more energetic than those below that altitude. The flux of photoelectrons escaping to the protonosphere at dawn was found to be 2.6 × 108 cm?2 sec?1, while the escaping flux at noon was found to be 1.5 × 108 cm?2 sec?1. The corresponding escaping energy fluxes are: 4.4 × 109 eV cm?2 sec?1 and 2.7 × 109 eV cm?2 sec?1.  相似文献

Shock wave and thermodynamic data for rock-forming and volatile-bearing minerals are used to determine minimum impact velocities (vcr) and minimum impact pressures (pcr) required to form a primary H2O atmosphere during planetary accretion from chondritelike planetesimals. The escape of initially released water from an accreting planet is controlled by the dehydration efficiency. Since different planetary surface porosities will result from formation of a regolith, vcr and pcr can vary from 1.5 to 5.8 km/sec and from 90 to 600 kbar, respectively, for target porosities between 0 and ~45%. On the basis of experimental data, hydration rates for forsterite and enstatite are derived. For a global regolith layer on the Earth's surface, the maximum hydration rate equals 6 × 1010 g H2O sec?1 during accretion of the Earth. Attenuation of impact-induced shock pressure is modeled to the extent that the amount of released water as a function of projectile radius, impact velocity, weight fraction of water in the target, target porosity, and dehydration efficiency can be estimated. The two primary processes considered are the impact release of water bound in hydrous minerals (e.g., serpentine) and the subsequent reincorporation of free water by hydration of forsterite and enstatite. These processes are described in terms of model calculations for the accretion of the Earth. Parameters which lead to a primary atmosphere/hydrosphere are: an accretion time of ? 1.6 × 108years, the use of an accretion model defined by Weidenschilling (1974, 1976), a mean planetesimal radius of 0.5 km, a hydration rate of 6 × 1010 g H2O sec?1 inferred from a mean porosity of ~ 10% for the upper 1 km of the accreting Earth, and values for the dehydration efficiency, DE, of 0.55 and 0.07 for the maximum and minimum pressure decay model, respectively. Conditions which prohibit the formation of a primary atmosphere include an accretion time much longer than 1.6 × 108 years, a hydration rate for forsterite and enstatite well in excess of 6 × 1010 g H2O sec?1, and a dehydration efficiency DE < 0.07. We conclude that the concept of dehydration efficiency is of dominant importance in determining the degree to which an accreting planet acquires an atmosphere during its formation.  相似文献

Nitric oxide is formed in the atmosphere through the ionization and dissociation of molecular nitrogen by galactic cosmic rays. One NO molecule is formed for each ion pair produced by cosmic ray ionization. The height-integrated input (day and night) to the lower stratosphere is of the order of 6 × 107 NO molecules cm?2/sec in the auroral zone (geomagnetic latitude Φ ? 60°) during the minimum of the sunspot cycle and 4 × 107 NO molecules cm?2/sec in the subauroral belt and auroral region (Φ? 45°) at the maximum of solar activity. The tropical production is less than 10?7 NO molecules cm?2/sec above 17 km and at the equator the production is only 3 × 106NO molecules cm?2/sec.  相似文献

Observations of high-speed coronal clouds (OSO-7), flare ejecta (Skylab) and high-energy jets (HRTS) are compared. It is possible that the same physical mechanism - an expanding loop - which is responsible for the high speed jets (400 km sec?1, 2.5 × 1026 ergs) can also account for the high-speed coronal clouds (1300 km sec?1, 4 × 1030 ergs), which were correlated with a flare-connected spray. Field strength of 15 gauss and 2500 gauss are required for the jets and the sprays, respectively.  相似文献

A family of high-velocity stars (Energy-19000 km2/sec2, angular momentum 1150 kpc km/sec) were computed using Innanen's (1966) mass model of the Galaxy. The stars were set initially on the curve of zero velocity. The inclination diagram indicates a quasi-isolating third integral.  相似文献

The UCSD X-ray telescope on OSO-3 scanned Jupiter for 33 days during February and March 1968. We have searched the data for a steady Jovian flux, and for a burst component at times of decametric radio bursts. Neither component was detected at a sensitivity of ~0.1 photon (cm2sec)?1 for hv > 7.7 keV. At 4.4AU, the 3σ upper limits correspond to X-ray luminosities of 7.4 × 1019 ergs sec?1 for the steady component, and 2 × 1020 ergs sec?1 for the burst component. The observations occurred during a period of high solar activity, during which three sudden-commencement magnetic storms were observed at Earth. We compare the upper limits with several different calculations of the expected flux levels, and conclude that major improvements in X-ray detection techniques will be required before Jovian X rays can be detected with near-Earth observations.  相似文献

Observations and model calculations of water vapor diffusion suggest that about half the amount of water vapor is distributed with constant mixing ratio in the Martian atmosphere, the other half is the excess water vapor in the lower troposphere. During 24 hr the total content of water vapor may vary by a factor of two. The eddy diffusion coefficient providing agreement between calculations and observations is K = (3–10) × 106 cm2 sec?1 in the troposphere. An analytical expression is derived for condensate density in the stratosphere in terms of the temperature profile, the particle radius r, and K. The calculations agree with the Mars 5 measurements for r = 1.5 μm, condensate density 5 × 10?12 g/cm3 in the layer maximum at 30 to 35 km, condensate column density 7 × 10?6 cm?2, K = (1?3) × 106 cm2 sec?1, and the temperature profile T = 185 ? 0.05z ? 0.01z2 at 20 to 40 km. Condensation conditions yield a temperature of 160°K at 60 km in the evening; the scale height for scattered radiation yields T = 110°k at 80 to 90 km. The Mars model atmosphere has been developed up to 125 km.  相似文献

It has been shown that the photochemical lifetime of OH in comets is a function of the comet's radial velocity. The calculated lifetime at 1 AU can vary between 6.9 × 104 to 2.1 × 105 sec for radial velocities that vary from ?58 to +59 km/sec. A comparison between the scale lengths observed for three comets and those calculated based upon the theoretical lifetime has been made. This comparison shows that in two of the comets the lifetime derived from the scale lengths is a factor of 1.7 larger than the theoretical lifetime. Suggestions are made about the origin of this discrepancy.  相似文献

The impact light flash produced by electrostatically accelerated iron particles with diameters meters ranging from 5 to 0.05 μm and velocities lying between 1 km/sec and 30 km/sec has been investigated by means of photomultipliers. As target materials mainly gold and tungsten were used. The pulse of the multiplier was registered directly and after electronic integration. The pulse height of the multiplier signal, the amplitude of the integrated signal as well as its rise time were found to be unique functions of the mass and velocity of the impacting particle. For the pulse height of the differential signal the relation I = c1 × m1.25 × v5 was obtained, and for the integrated signal the relation I = c2 × m1.25 × v3.8, with only c1 and C2 depending on the target material. The rise time of the integrated signal follows the relation T = 2.2 × 102 × v?0.4 using gold as target, and in the case of tungsten material follows the relation T = 9.8 × 102 × v?1.2, where v is expressed in km/sec and T in μsec. Using the spectral distribution of the light intensity, measured by means of calibrated photomultipliers, the total amount of light energy emitted in the visible range could be calculated. As a result we obtained that for v = 4 km/sec and m = 10?11 g about 3 × 10?4 of the kinetic energy of the particle was converted into light energy. The variation of the impact flash intensity with the target material and the measured spectral distribution allowed the temperature of the crater after the impact to be estimated as between 2000 and 3000 K.  相似文献

Altitude dependences of [CO2] and [CO2+] are deduced from Mariner 6 and 7 CO2+ airglow measurements. CO2 densities are also obtained from ne radio occultation measurements. Both [CO2] profiles are similar and correspond to the model atmosphere of Barth et al. (1972) at 120 km, but at higher altitudes they diverge and at 200–220 km the obtained [CO2] values are three times less the model. Both the airglow and radio occultation observations show that a correction factor of 2.5 should be included into the values for solar ionization flux given by Hinteregger (1970). The ratio of [CO2+]/ne is 0.15–0.2 and, hence, [O]/[CO2] is ~3% at 135 km. An atmospheric and ionospheric model is developed for 120–220 km. The calculated temperature profile is characterized by a value of T ≈ 370°K at h ? 220 km, a steep gradient (~2°/km) at 200-160 km, a bend in the profile at 160 km, a small gradient (~0.7°/km) below and a value of T ≈ 250°K at 120 km. The upper point agrees well with the results of the Lyman-α measurements; the steep gradient may be explained by molecular viscosity dissipation of gravity and acoustical waves (the corresponding energy flux is 4 × 10?2 erg cm?2sec?1 at 180 km). The bend at 160 km may be caused by a sharp decrease of the eddy diffusion coefficient and defines K ≈ 2 × 108cm2sec?1; and the low gradient gives an estimate of the efficiency of the atmosphere heating by the solar radiation as ? ≈ 0.1.  相似文献

X-radiation may result from active plasma phenomena in the interactions of comets with the solar wind. We have carried out a limited but sensitive search for soft X-radiation from Comet Bradfield (1979l), on 1980 Feb. 5. No X-radiation was detected at a level (3σ) of 1.7 × 10?13 erg(cm2sec keV)?1 in the 0.2 – 4.0 kev range. This corresponds to a limit on the power dissipated in the comet by non-thermal electrons of approximately 1019 ergs sec?1, averaged over the 2568-sec exposure to the comet. This energy deposition is near the magnitude suggested by simple theoretical ideas, and further searches of appropriate comets both in soft X-radiation and at radio wavelengths seem warranted.  相似文献

A variety of models are explored to study the photochemistry of CO2 in the Martian atmosphere with emphasis on reactions involving compounds of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Acceptable models are constrained to account for measured concentrations of CO and O above 90 km, with an additional requirement that they should be in accord with observations of CO, O2, and O3 in the lower atmosphere. Dynamical mixing must be exceedingly rapid at altitudes above 90 km, with effective eddy diffusion coefficients in excess of 107 cm2 sec?1. If recombination of CO2 is to occur mainly by gas phase chemistry, catalyzed by trace quantities of H, OH, and HO2, mixing must be rapid over the altitude interval 30 to 40 km. The value implied for the diffusion coefficient in this region is a function of assumptions made regarding the rates for reaction of OH with HO2 to form H2O and of the rate for reaction of HO2 with itself to form H2O2. If rates for these reactions are taken to have values similar to rates used in current models for the Earth's stratosphere, the eddy diffusion coefficient at 40 km on Mars should be about 5 × 107 cm2 sec?1, consistent with Zurek's (1976) estimate for this parameter inferred from tidal theory. Surface chemistry could have an influence on the abundances of atmospheric CO and O2, but a major effect would imply sluggish mixing at all altitudes below 50 km and in addition would carry implications for the magnitude of the rates for reaction of OH with HO2 and HO2 with itself.  相似文献

The motion of fragments following a catastrophic destruction by either a normal or an oblique impact at 2.5–2.9 km sec?1 into cubic and spherical basalt targets was studied with a high-speed framing camera. Velocities at the antipodes of the targets vary as (E/M)0.75 (E = impact energy; M = target mass) and are lower than 200 m sec?1 at E/M ? 109 ergs g?1. Excluding fine-grained particles from the impact site, 70 to 80% by mass fraction of the fragments have velocities lower than twice the antipodal velocity. Comminution and ejection energies wasted in this mass fraction were a few percent of the impact energy at E/M ? 5 × 107 ergs g?1. During a catastrophic impact into asteroids some of the fragmented bodies can be reconcentrated by mutual gravitation.  相似文献

A review is given of the stratospheric budgets of odd oxygen, odd nitrogen, nitrous oxide, methane and carbonyl sulfide. The stratospheric column production rate of NO by the reaction N2O + O(1D) → 2 NO is 1.1–1.9 × 108 molecules cm?2 s?1. The stratospheric loss rates for N2O, CH4 and COS are equal to 0.9–1.4 × 109, 1 × 1010 and 0.5 × 107 molecules cm?2 s?1, respectively. From currently available information on the global distributions of N2O and CH4 there are some indications of about two times smaller OH concentrations below 35 km than those which are calculated based on the latest compilation of kinetic data. Most significantly, however, it is shown that photochemical models and available ozone observations cannot be reconciled and that there may be particularly severe problems in the 25–35 km region. This issue is thoroughly discussed.Volcanic emissions of SO2 to the stratosphere may locally lead to much enhanced ozone concentrations and heating rates. These may influence the dynamic behaviour of volcanic plumes before their dispersion over large volumes of the stratosphere.  相似文献

A spectroscopic search for H2O and CH4 in Comet Kohoutek (1973f) was made using a Pepsios interferometer. No evidence was found for either molecule, allowing us to set an upper limit on their production rates (on about 21 January 1974) of Q(H2O) < 6.2 × 1028 sec?1 and Q(CH4) < 2.0 × 1030 sec?1. If the cometary surface is water-ice, this production rate leads to a product (1 ? A)·(πR02) < 2.2 km2, where A is the Bond albedo, R0 is the nuclear radius, and we assume that all the absorbed solar energy is used to evaporate H2O.  相似文献
