The location of the Jovian decametric radiation main source is determined to be the south magnetic pole while the location of the early source is found to be near the north magnetic pole, with an equal contribution from a region near the south magnetic pole. The results are based on calculations of the region observable from the Earth (ROE) for Jovian decametric radio waves that are emitted in the direction ± 10° centered on the direction perpendicular to the Jovian magnetic field and based on a Pioneer 11 model of the field at the level of the topside region of the Jovian ionosphere. Ground-based observations of the occurrence frequency of the decametric radiation as a function of Jovian longitude, which indicate a remarkable asymmetry between the early and main sources, agree with the calculated ROE area that varies as a function of CML observed from the Earth. The observations support a recent theory for the origin of the decametric radiation which is based on a wave-mode conversion from plasma waves into electromagnetic waves.  相似文献

The COSPIN/KET experiment onboard Ulysses has been monitoring the flux of 3–20 MeV electrons in interplanetary space since the launch of Ulysses in October 1990. The origin of these electrons has been known for a long time to be the Jovian magnetosphere. Propagation models assuming interplanetary diffusion of these electrons in the ideal Parker magnetic field were successfully developed in the past. The average electron flux measured by our experiment agrees with these models for most of the times before and after the Jovian flyby of February 1992, i.e. in and out of the ecliptic down to 28° S of heliographic latitude for the last data presented here (end of March 1993).However, in addition to this average flux level well accounted for by diffusion in an ideal Parker field, we have found very short duration electron events which we call “jets”, characterized by: (i) a sharp increase and decrease of flux; (ii) a spectrum identical to the electron spectrum in the Jovian magnetosphere; and (iii) a strong first-order anisotropy. These jets only occur when the magnetic field at Ulysses lies close to the direction of Jupiter, and most of the time (86% of the events) points outwards from Jupiter, i.e. has the same polarity after the flyby as the Jovian dipole (North to South). These events are interpreted as crossings by Ulysses of magnetic flux tubes or sheets directly connected to the location of the Jovian magnetosphere from which electrons escape into interplanetary space. The average thickness of these sheets is 1011cm or 14 Jovian radii. These jets are clearly identified up to 0.4 a.u. before the Jupiter flyby in the ecliptic plane, and up to 0.9 a.u. out of the ecliptic. Moreover, the characteristic rocking of the electron spectrum in the Jovian magnetosphere with a 10 h periodicity is found to be present during the jets, and predominantly during them. In the past, this modulation has been reported to be present in interplanetary space as far as 1 a.u. upwind of Jupiter, a fact which cannot be accounted for by diffusion in the average Parker magnetic field. Our finding gives a simple explanation to this phenomenon, the 10 h modulation being carried by the “jet” electrons which travel with no appreciable diffusion along magnetic field lines with a direction far from the ideal Parker spiral.  相似文献

Spatially resolved absolute reflectivities of several regions of the Jovian disk in the wavelength region 3000 to 10760 Å are presented. Spectra were obtained of the central meridian and limbs of the Equatorial Region, North Equatorial Belt, and North Tropical Zone. Equivalent widths of several CH4 and NH3 bands are measured. The spatial variations of continuum reflectivity and absorption band profiles are shown in various ratio spectra.  相似文献

Only those Jovian decametric storms whose maximum radio-frequency reaches or exceeds 30 Mc/s exhibit the strong well-known pattern of peak occurrence at Io phases 90° and 230°. The majority of storms, those which fail to reach 30 Mc/s, exhibit a weaker and more complex pattern.

The maximum radio-frequency of storms also determines the pattern of occurrence with Jovian longitude, though the structure of this pattern is tens of Mc/s wide. On a fine scale, it is not the radio-frequency, nor primarily the central time, but the commencement time of storms which correlates with Jovian longitude. Most main-source storms are first seen on Earth as Jupiter's Northern Hemisphere magnetic pole (λIII = 200°) crosses the central meridian.

The current belief that Jupiter's radio rotation period has lengthened during the last few years is probably erroneous.  相似文献

The ionosphere of Jupiter's satellite Io, discovered by the Pioneer 10 radio-occultation experiment, cannot easily be understood in terms of a model of a gravitationally bound, Earth-like ionosphere. Io's gravitational field is so weak that a gravitationally bound ionosphere would probably be blown away by the ram force of the Jovian magnetospheric wind — i.e., the plasma corotating in the Jovian magnetosphere. We propose here a model in which the material for Io's atmosphere and ionosphere is drawn from the ionosphere of Jupiter through a Birkeland current system that is driven by the potential induced across Io by the Jovian corotation electric field. We argue that the ionization near Io is caused by a comet-like interaction between the corotating plasma and Io's atmosphere. The initial interaction employs the critical velocity phenomenon proposed many years ago by Alfvén. Further ionization is produced by the impact of Jovian trapped energetic electrons, and the ionization thus created is swept out ahead of Io in its orbit. Thus, we suggest that what has been reported as a day-night ionospheric asymmetry is in fact an upstream-downstream asymmetry caused by the Jovian magnetospheric wind.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30th May, 1978.  相似文献

When a highly conducting magnetized plasma passes an object with lower conductivity, or a body with inhomogeneous conductivity, 2-D structures are formed, the so-called `Alfvén wings'. These structures may arise, for example, at a Jovian moon without an intrinsic magnetic field (Callisto). In this case, Alfvén wings could be generated in the magnetized Jovian magnetospheric plasma flow owing to the in homogeneity of the moon's ionosphere/atmosphere conductivity. Such Alfvén wings may be considered as a satellite magnetosphere; the satellite magnetospheric magnetic field is a disturbed field of the Jovian magnetospheric plasma flow. An analytical solution is obtained in a simple proposed model. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The current state of the theory of Jupiter's outer atmosphere is briefly reviewed. The similarities and dissimilarities between the terrestrial and Jovian upper atmospheres are discussed, including the interaction of the solar wind with the planetary magnetic fields. Estimates of Jovian parameters are given, including magnetosphere and auroral zone sizes, ionospheric conductivity, energy inputs, and solar wind parameters at Jupiter. The influence of the large centrifugal force on the cold plasma distribution is considered. The Jovian Van Alien belt is attributed to solar wind particles diffused in towards the planet by dynamo electric fields from ionospheric neutral winds and consequences of this theory are given.

Precision radial velocity measurements of the Sun-like dwarf 14 Herculis published by Naef et al., Butler et al. and Wittenmyer, Endl & Cochran reveal a Jovian planet in a 1760-d orbit and a trend indicating the second distant object. On the grounds of dynamical considerations, we test a hypothesis that the trend can be explained by the presence of an additional giant planet. We derive dynamical limits to the orbital parameters of the putative outer Jovian companion in an orbit within ∼13 au. In this case, the mutual interactions between the Jovian planets are important for the long-term stability of the system. The best self-consistent and stable Newtonian fit to an edge-on configuration of Jovian planets has the outer planet in 9-au orbit with a moderate eccentricity of ∼0.2 and confined to a zone spanned by the low-order mean motion resonances 5:1 and 6:1. This solution lies in a shallow minimum of (χ2ν)1/2 and persists over a wide range of the system inclination. Other stable configurations within 1σ confidence interval of the best fit are possible for the semimajor axis of the outer planet in the range of (6,13) au and the eccentricity in the range of (0, 0.3). The orbital inclination cannot yet be determined but when it decreases, both planetary masses approach ∼10 m J and for i ∼ 30° the hierarchy of the masses is reversed.  相似文献

After the collision of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9) with Jupiter, some ring structures were observed propagating outwards at a constant speed (∼450 m/s) on the Jovian surface. These are thought to be linear waves caused by the collision. A linear model of the collision is presented, in which the Jovian atmosphere is considered as an irrotational, inviscid, stratified and incompressible fluid layer moving at a speed of U = b + az. We take an initial impulsive pressure p(r; 0) as the initial condition and solve the fluid dynamics equations for inertia-gravity waves. It is found that most part of the perturbation energy is used to produce internal waves when Jovian atmosphere moves at a constant speed (U = Uo (∼170 m/s)). A relation between the impact depth H and the horizontal phase speed vp is deduced. Finally, the inertia-gravity waves are discussed for the case U = b + az and it is found that the perturbation energy is then not divided equally between kinetic energy and potential energy because of the effect of a shear.  相似文献

The passage of Ulysses through Jupiter's magnetosphere presents a new opportunity to investigate the contribution to the Jovian magnetosphere of ions of atmospheric origin. A determination of the magnetospheric H+/He2+ flux ratio allows an estimate of the relative abundance of ionospheric material in the Jovian magnetosphere. We find that the H+/He2+ flux ratio, measured in the energy/charge range between 0.65 and 60 keV/e, steadily increases from a solar wind level of 25 at the magnetopause to a value of 700 at the point of closest approach, and then steadily decreases whilst approaching the magnetopause on the outbound path. We conclude from this that: (1) there is a significant solar wind component throughout the outer and middle magnetosphere; and (2) a significant fraction of the protons in the middle magnetosphere are of nonsolar origin.  相似文献

Jupiter radio emission is known to be the most powerful nonthermal planetary radiation. In recent years specifically space-based observations allow us to permanently cover a large frequency band(from 100 kHz up to 40 MHz combined with ground-based telescopes)of the Jovian spectrum. The Plasma and Wave Science experiment onboard Galileo enables the observation of Jovian kilometric and hectometric emissions; Wind/WAVES and ground-based telescopes (mainly Decametric Array in Nancay, France, and UTR-2 in Kharkov, Ukraine) cover also hectometric and mainly decametric emissions. Specific geometrical configurations between Cassini approaching Jupiter and Wind spacecraft orbiting Earth, with Galileo orbiting Jupiter and Wind, in combination with ground-based observations provide a new approach to perform Jovian radio tomography. The tomography technique is used to analyze ray paths of Jovian radio emission observed in different directions (e.g. solar and anti-solar direction) and for different declination of Earth. The developments of Jovian radio emission tomography in recent years treated refraction effects and its connection to the local magnetic field in the radio source as well as the radio wave propagation through the Io torus and the terrestrial ionosphere. Most recently ground-based multi-site and simultaneous Jupiter decametric radio observations by means of digital spectropolarimeter and waveform receiver provide the basis of a new data analysis treatment. The above addressed topics are without exemption deeply connected to the plasma structures the radio waves are generated in and propagating through. Modeling of the Jovian atmosphere shows that cosmic ray induced albedo neutron decay is inadequate to account for Pioneer 10 and 11 projected electron levels on Jupiter. High energy solar protons must also be excluded as an important neutron decay source. Analysis of neutron flux data near the top of the Jovian atmosphere can lead to the determination of He/H2 and3He/4He ratios for the Jovian atmosphere.  相似文献

The products from spark and semi-corona discharges through mixtures simulating the Jovian atmosphere were analyzed by gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry. When the reaction was performed at ?80°C, 3-ethylaminopropionitrile and a number of higher homologs were formed. On the other hand, at +20°C, higher molecular-weight material appeared which yielded aminonitrile- derived fragments on mass spectrometry. Although the spectra were not identical, there were notable similarities between these and the mass spectra of some compounds present in the Murray and Orgeuil meteorites. Aminonitriles may occur as minor constituents of the Jovian atmosphere and perhaps by cyclization may produce pyrimidines.  相似文献

Ulysses had a “distant encounter” with Jupiter in February 2004. The spacecraft passed from north to south, and it observed Jovian radio waves from high to low latitudes (from +80° to +10°) for few months during its encounter. In this study, we present a statistical investigation of the occurrence characteristics of Jovian quasi-periodic bursts, using spectral data from the unified radio and plasma wave experiment (URAP) onboard Ulysses. The latitudinal distribution of quasi-periodic bursts is derived for the first time. The analysis suggested that the bursts can be roughly categorized into two types: one having periods shorter than 30 min and one with periods longer than 30 min, which is consistent with the results of the previous analysis of data from Ulysses’ first Jovian flyby [MacDowall, R.J., Kaiser, M.L., Desch, M.D., Farrell, W.M., Hess, R.A., Stone, R.G., 1993. Quasi-periodic Jovian radio bursts: observations from the Ulysses radio and plasma wave. Experiment. Planet. Space Sci. 41, 1059-1072]. It is also suggested that the groups of quasi-periodic bursts showed a dependence on the Jovian longitude of the sub-solar point, which means that these burst groups are triggered during a particular rotational phase of the planet. Maps of the occurrence probability of these quasi-periodic bursts also showed a unique CML/MLAT dependence. We performed a 3D ray tracing analysis of the quasi-periodic burst emission to learn more about the source distribution. The results suggest that the longitudinal distribution of the occurrence probability depends on the rotational phase. The source region of quasi-periodic bursts seems to be located at an altitude between 0.4 and 1.4 Rj above the polar cap region (L>30).  相似文献

Model calculations show that the far-infrared bands of ammonia are very sensitive to the ammonia distribution above the Jovian atmospheric inversion layer. Observation of the J = 5 and J = 6 ammonia bands at moderate resolution (R ~ 700) can differentiate between a cold trap model or the irreversible uv photodestruction model for the ammonia distribution. The amount of core emission is very sensitive to the distribution of ammonia above the Jovian inversion layer.  相似文献

The interaction of the Jovian energetic radiation belt electrons, and the Jovian plasma, with an ambient dust population is examined. Firstly the distribution of dust, ejected from Io, in the inner magnetosphere is calculated. Using the mass loss in submicron particles of ~13g/sec, which is required to model the intensity and shape of the Jovian ring in the model of Morfill etal. (1980b), it is possible to quantitatively calculate losses of magnetospheric ions and electrons due to direct collisions with charged dust particles as well as multiple Coulomb scattering with resultant losses in the Jovian atmosphere. It is shown that the magnitude and radial dependence of the losses are sufficient to explain the electron measurements, although the possibility that some other process may be more effective cannot be ruled out. The same dust population has, on the other hand, no significant effect on the plasma, which should therefore be transported essentially loss free, except within the Jovian ring, if there are no other processes involved. Comparison with the data shows that loss free transport outside the ring does indeed satisfy the measurement constraints.  相似文献

Energy conversion rates from the extraordinary mode to the ordinary mode ofthe electromagnetic waves in the Jovian plasmasphere has been calculated for a model of the sharp boundary that is given in the vicinity of the position where ω = ωp, for an angular frequency ω and the angular plasma frequency ωp. The extraordinary mode electromagnetic wave that is obtained as a result of the transformation of a longitudinal propa- gating through an inhomogenous plasma is here considered. The results give conversion rates of 1–50 per cent, at the most, when a wave normal direction of an is nearly parallel to the boundary normal direction and when the Jovian magnetic field vector is close to the boundary normal direction within an angle range from 10° to 15°. The electric field intensity, in range from 7 to 70 mV/m, of the original electrostatic electron cyclotron plasma waves can give the power flux in a range from 10-22 to 10-20W/m2 Hz for the Jovian decameter waves observed at the Earth's surface. Efficient energy conversion is possible only when the ray direction of the emitted wave is in nearly perpendicular direction with respect to the magnetic field; this is the origin of the sharp beam emission of the Jovian decameter wave burst.  相似文献

Jovian decametric radio wave emissions that were observed at Goddard Space Flight Center, U.S.A. for a period from 1 October to 31 December, 1974 and data obtained at Mt Zao observatory, Tohoku University, Japan, for a period from 14 July to 6 December, 1975 have been used to investigate the relationship of the occurrence of the Jovian decametric radio waves (JDW), from the main source, to the geomagnetic disturbance index, ΣKp. The dynamic cross-correlation between JDW and ΣKp indicates an enhanced correlation for certain values of delay time. The delay time is consistent with predicted values based on a model of rotating turbulent regions in interplanetary space associated with two sector boundaries of the interplanetary magnetic field, i.e. the rotating sector boundaries of the interplanetary magnetic field first encounter the Earth's magnetosphere producing the geomagnetic field disturbances, and after a certain period, they encounter the Jovian magnetosphere. There are also cases where the order of the encounter is opposite, i.e. the sector boundaries encounter first Jovian magnetosphere and encounter the Earth's magnetosphere after a certain period.  相似文献

Spatially resolved reflectivities from 3000 to 6600 Å of three positions from the center to the limb of the Jovian Equator, North Equatorial Belt, and North Tropical Zone are analyzed to determine the vertical distribution and wavelength dependence of various sources of blue and uv absorption. Six different models of the distribution of absorbing dust particles are examined. In each model, the variation of dust optical depth and cloud single-scattering albedo are determined. Only those models having dust above the upper NH3 cloud layer will fit the data. The high altitude dust distribution is approximately uniform over the three regions examined. The contrast in reflectivity of the belts and zones may be modeled by a different cloud single-scattering albedo in the different regions.  相似文献
