It is well known that the interaction of an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) with the solar wind leads to an equalisation of the ICME and solar wind velocities at 1 AU. This can be understood in terms of an aerodynamic drag force per unit mass of the form F D/M=−(ρe AC D/M)(V iV e)∣V iV e∣, where A and M are the ICME cross-section and sum of the mass and virtual mass, V i and V e the speed of the ICME and solar wind, ρe the solar wind density, C D a dimensionless drag coefficient, and the inverse deceleration length γ=ρe A/M. The optimal radial parameterisation of γ and C D beyond approximately 15 solar radii is calculated. Magnetohydrodynamic simulations show that for dense ICMEs, C D varies slowly between the Sun and 1 AU, and is of order unity. When the ICME and solar wind densities are similar, C D is larger (between 3 and 10), but remains approximately constant with radial distance. For tenuous ICMEs, the ICME and solar wind velocities equalise rapidly due to the very effective drag force. For ICMEs denser that the ambient solar wind, both approaches show that γ is approximately independent of radius, while for tenuous ICMEs, γ falls off linearly with distance. When the ICME density is similar to or less than that in the solar wind, inclusion of virtual mass effects is essential.  相似文献

The monthly probability of occurrence of southward (B z ) component of IMF estimated independent of the sector polarity observed near earth is found to change with the magnitude of solar wind velocity. The above analysis is done for each month during two years around sunspot minima and maxima in cycle 21. The results will be interpreted in terms of association of southwardB z events with solar wind flows of distinct solar origin such as low and high speed solar wind.  相似文献

We present the results of a study of solar wind velocity and magnetic field correlation lengths over the last 35 years. The correlation length of the magnetic field magnitude λ |B| increases on average by a factor of two at solar maxima compared to solar minima. The correlation lengths of the components of the magnetic field lBXYZ\lambda_{B_{XYZ}} and of the velocity lVYZ\lambda_{V_{YZ}} do not show this change and have similar values, indicating a continual turbulent correlation length of around 1.4×106 km. We conclude that a linear relation between λ |B|, VB 2, and Kp suggests that the former is related to the total magnetic energy in the solar wind and an estimate of the average size of geoeffective structures, which is, in turn, proportional to VB 2. By looking at the distribution of daily correlation lengths we show that the solar minimum values of λ |B| correspond to the turbulent outer scale. A tail of larger λ |B| values is present at solar maximum causing the increase in mean value.  相似文献

The solar wind plasma exhibits many features of the solar surface passed on to the interplanetary medium as temporal variations due to the solar rotation. The yearly average values of solar wind velocity, and geomagnetic index A p during 1965–1999 were found to exhibit long period evolution. They were found to peak around the declining phase of each solar cycle. While the solar wind velocity peaks around the second half of the declining phase, the IMF field strength increases around the first half of the declining phase of each solar cycle. The power spectrum of these parameters shows peaks around 37-day, 30-day, 27-day, 13.5-day, 9-day, and 7-day periods. The temporal evolution of the power spectrum of the solar wind plasma parameters and the geomagnetic activity index A p are also studied in detail and presented with the help of contour graphs. These studies indicate that the strength of the quasi-periodicities in the interplanetary medium evolves with time.  相似文献

During the descent of Ulysses following the 2001 solar north pole passage, the SOHO LASCO C2 telescope recorded a particularly strong sequence of recurrent polarization brightness (pB) features at latitudes of around 55°. As Ulysses passed overhead, solar rotation swept the interplanetary extensions of these persistent coronal structures over the spacecraft. Comparison of solar remote sensing and Ulysses in situ observations through 2002 reveals the solar wind effects of very bright and recurrent K-coronal structures at high solar latitudes and of a steeply inclined heliospheric neutral sheet (HNS). Despite the high level of solar activity, the HNS at high latitude still organizes solar wind stream structure much as it did near the previous solar minimum. The recurrent coronal streamers originate slow solar wind and mark the northern extremity of a very tilted HNS whose passage at Ulysses is accompanied by slow, dense solar wind, enhanced temperature, depressed α abundance, enhanced magnetic fields, and magnetic field directional changes that evolve with spacecraft latitude.  相似文献

The effect of alpha particles on the dispersion relation of ion cyclotron waves and its influence on the heating of the solar wind plasma are investigated. The presence of alpha particles can dramatically change the dispersion relation of ion cyclotron waves, and significantly influence the way that ion cyclotron waves heat the solar wind plasma. We find that a spectrum of ion cyclotron waves affects the thermal anisotropy of the solar wind protons and other ions differently in interplanetary space: When alpha particles have a speed u α>0.5v A, and both protons and alpha particles have a thermal anisotropy T /T >1, ion cyclotron waves heat protons in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field, cool them in the parallel direction, and exert the opposite effect on alpha particles.  相似文献

Long-lived brightness structures in the solar electron corona persist over many solar rotation periods and permit an observational determination of coronal magnetic tracer rotation as a function of latitude and height in the solar atmosphere. For observations over 1964–1976 spanning solar cycle 20, we compare the latitude dependence of rotation at two heights in the corona. Comparison of rotation rates from East and West limbs and from independent computational procedures is used to estimate uncertainty. Time-averaged rotation rates based on three methods of analysis demonstrate that, on average, coronal differential rotation decreases with height from 1.125 to 1.5 R S. The observed radial variation of differential rotation implies a scale height of approximately 0.7 R S for coronal differential rotation.Model calculations for a simple MHD loop show that magnetic connections between high and low latitudes may produce the observed radial variations of magnetic tracer rotation. If the observed tracer rotation represents the rotation of open magnetic field lines as well as that of closed loops, the small scale height for differential rotation suggests that the rotation of solar magnetic fields at the base of the solar wind may be only weakly latitude dependent. If, instead, closed loops account completely for the radial gradients of rotation, outward extrapolation of electron coronal rotation may not describe magnetic field rotation at the solar wind source. Inward extrapolations of observed rotation rates suggest that magnetic field and plasma are coupled a few hundredths of a solar radius beneath the photosphere.  相似文献

The transfer of wave energy to plasma energy is a very crucial issue in coronal holes and helmet streamer regions. Mixed mode Alfvén waves, also known as kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW) can play an important role in the energization of the plasma particles because of their potential ability to heat and accelerate the plasma particles via Landau damping. This paper presents an investigation of the growth of a Gaussian perturbation on a non-uniform kinetic Alfvén wave having Gaussian wave front. The effect of the nonlinear coupling between the main KAW and the perturbation has been studied. The dynamical equations for the field of the main KAW and the perturbation have been established and their semi-analytical solution has been obtained in the low (β≪ me/mi≪ 1) and the high (β≫ me/mi≪ 1) β cases. The critical field of the main KAW and the perturbation has been evaluated. Nonlinear evolution of the main KAW and the perturbation into the filamentary structures and its dependence on various parameters of the solar wind and the solar corona have been investigated in detail. These filamentary structures can act as a source for the particle acceleration by wave particle interaction because the KAWs are mixed modes and Landau damping is possible. Especially, in the solar corona, the low β and the high β cases could correspond to the coronal holes and the helmet streamer. The presence of the primary and the secondary filaments of the perturbation may change the spectrum of the Alfvénic turbulence in the solar wind.  相似文献

Identifying co-rotating structures in solar wind enables us to predict solar wind variation at the Earth and, hence, geomagnetic disturbances. However, co-rotating structures during solar maximum are sometimes difficult to see. We correlated solar wind data obtained by two spacecraft, Nozomi heading towards Mars and ACE at the L1 point, from late 1999 through early 2002. There were intervals when the solar wind showed specific co-rotating structures even in the midst of the solar maximum, whereas no correlation was found during the other intervals. The coefficient was generally higher between Nozomi and ACE than for the 27-day recurrence at ACE, while there was some correlation, especially when the difference in longitude between the two spacecraft was less than 120°. Although frequency of occurrence of CMEs is partly responsible for the correlation, the results can be interpreted in terms of rapid changes in co-rotating high-speed streams from near-equatorial coronal holes at the solar maximum.  相似文献

The correlations between the plasma characteristics of the solar wind flow in the vicinity (± 12 hr) of stream-free sector boundaries near Earth are examined using the composite data base of interplanetary plasma for the period 1965–1980. We confirm the result of Lopez et al. (1986) of an inverse relationship of the proton temperature (T p) with the momentum flux density (NV 2) in the low speed wind at 1 AU. The coefficients of lines of best fit to the T pvs NV 2(as well as T pvs V) distribution in our sample are, however, significantly different from those of the undifferentiated sample of low speed wind considered by Lopez et al. such that T pis, in general, lower than expected. We find further that the proton number density (N) varies as the inverse cube of the flow speed (V) indicating an invariance of the kinetic energy flux density (NV 3) relative to velocity structure in the plasma flow around stream-free boundaries. These average relationships, which are unaffected by interplanetary dynamical processes, are suggested to be due to sub-sonic addition of momentum and energy to the solar wind flow from the source structures, namely coronal streamers.  相似文献

A global 3-D simulation of interplanetary dynamics in June 1991   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The global dynamics of the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field in June 1991 is simulated based on a fully three-dimensional, time-dependent numerical MHD model. The numerical simulation includes eight transient disturbances associated with the major solar flares of June 1991. The unique features of the present simulation are: (i) the disturbances are originated at the coronal base (1R s) and their propagation through inhomogeneous ambient solar wind is simulated out to 1.5 AU; (ii) as a background for the transients, the global steady-state solar wind structure inferred from the 3-D steady-state model (Usmanov, 1993c) is used. The parameters of the initial pulses are prescribed in terms of the near-Sun shock velocities (as inferred from the metric Type II radio burst observations) relative to the preshock steady-state flow parameters at the flare sites. The computed parameters at the Earth's location for the period 1–18 June, 1991 are compared with the available observations of the interplanetary magnetic field, solar wind velocity, density, and with variation of the geomagnetic activityK pindex.  相似文献

The Air Force/NASA Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) will provide two-dimensional images of the sky in visible light with high (0.1%) photometric precision, and unprecedented sky coverage and cadence. To optimize the information available from these images they must be interpreted in three dimensions. We have developed a Computer Assisted Tomography (CAT) technique that fits a three-dimensional kinematic heliospheric model to remotely-sensed Thomson scattering observations. This technique is designed specifically to determine the corotating background solar wind component from data provided by instruments like SMEI. Here, we present results from this technique applied to the Helios spacecraft photometer observations. The tomography program iterates to a least-squares solution of observed brightnesses using solar rotation, spacecraft motion and solar wind outflow to provide perspective views of each point in space covered by the observations. The corotational tomography described here is essentially the same as used by Jackson et al. (1998) for the analysis of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observations. While IPS observations are related indirectly to the solar wind density through an assumed (and uncertain) relationship between small-scale density fluctuations and density, Thomson scattering physics is more straightforward, i.e., the observed brightness depends linearly on the solar wind density everywhere in the heliosphere. Consequently, Thomson scattering tomography can use a more direct density-convergence criterion to match observed Helios photometer brightness to brightness calculated from the model density. The general similarities between results based on IPS and Thomson scattering tomography validate both techniques and confirm that both observe the same type of solar wind structures. We show results for Carrington rotation 1653 near solar minimum. We find that longitudinally segmented dense structures corotate with the Sun and emanate from near the solar equator. We discuss the locations of these dense structures with respect to the heliospheric current sheet and regions of activity on the solar surface.  相似文献

3He is an intermediate product in the proton-proton chain, and standard models of the Sun predict a large bulge of enhanced 3He abundance near M r /M 0 = 0.6 in the contemporary Sun. The relatively low abundance of 3He at the solar surface, which is derived from solar wind observations, poses severe constraints to non-standard solar models.Direct measurements of the 3He abundance in the solar atmosphere are extremely difficult, whereas indirect measurements, e.g., in the solar wind, have been performed with considerable precision. The interpretation of solar wind observations with respect to solar surface abundances has been greatly improved in recent years. Abundance measurements have been performed under a large variety of solar wind conditions and refined models have been developed for the transport processes in the chromosphere and the transition region and for the processes occurring in the solar corona. From these measurements we estimate the present isotopic number ratio 3He/4He to be (4.1 ± 1.0) × 10–4 at the solar surface, corresponding to the weight abundance X 3 = (9.0 ± 2.4) × 10–5. The zero-age Main-Sequence abundance of 3He (after burning of D) might have been slightly lower (by about 10 to 20%) than the present-day value.Non-standard solar models involving mild turbulent diffusion (Lebreton and Maeder, 1987) could account for a slow secular increase of the 3He/4He ratio in the solar atmosphere. On the other hand it is difficult to reconcile models with severe mass loss as proposed by Guzik, Willson, and Brunish (1987) with this constraint. The slowing down of the solar rotation during the early Main-Sequence evolution was accompanied by stronger differential rotation probably implying a more effective mixing of the inner parts. Again, the surface abundance of 3He imposes severe limits on the evolution of the distribution of momentum within the early Sun.  相似文献

The longitudinal electric field associated with the observed electrostatic turbulence in the solar wind is shown to modify the dispersive characteristics of the hydromagnetic waves propagating along the interface between the solar wind and the cometary plasma. Extremely weak turbulence has a tendency to stabilize these surface waves, whereas turbulence of moderate level can be stabilizing or destabilizing depending on the strength of the cometary magnetic fieldB oc relative to the interplanetary magnetic fieldB os . ForB oc B os , destabilization is not possible.  相似文献

The effect of an interplanetary atomic hydrogen gas on solar wind proton, electron and α-particle temperatures beyond 1 AU is considered. It is shown that the proton temperature (and probably also the α-particle temperature) reaches a minimum between 2 AU and 4 AU, depending on values chosen for solar wind and interstellar gas parameters. Heating of the electron gas depends primarily on the thermal coupling of the protons and electrons. For strong coupling (whenT p ≳T e ), the electron temperature reaches a minimum between 4 AU and 8 AU, but for weak coupling (Coulomb collisions only), the electron temperature continues to decrease throughout the inner solar system. A spacecraft travelling to Jupiter should be able to observe the heating effect of the solar wind-interplanetary hydrogen interaction, and from such observations it may be possible of infer some properties of the interstellar neutral gas. Thirteen synoptic maps of expansion rate of the coronal magnetic field (CMF; RBR) calculated by the so-called ‘potential model’ are constructed for 13 Carrington rotations from the maximum phase of solar activity cycle 22 through the maximum phase of cycle 23. Similar 13 synoptic maps of solar wind speed (SWS) estimated by interplanetary scintillation observations are constructed for the same 13 Carrington rotations as the ones for the RBR. The correlation diagrams between the RBR and the SWS are plotted with the data of these 13 synoptic maps. It is found that the correlation is negative and high in this time period. It is further found that the linear correlation is improved if the data are classified into two groups by the magnitude of radial component of photospheric magnetic field, |Bphor|; group 1, 0.0 G ≦ |Brpho| < 17.8 G and group 2, 17.8 G ≦ |Brpho|. There exists a strong negative correlation between the RBR and the SWS for the group 1 in contrast with a weak negative correlation for the group 2. Group 1 has a double peak in the density distribution of data points in the correlation diagram; a sharp peak for high-speed solar wind and a low peak for low-speed solar wind. These two peaks are located just on the axis of maximum variance of data points in the correlation diagram. This result suggests that the solar wind consists of two major components and both the high-speed and the low-speed winds emanating from weak photospheric magnetic regions are accelerated by the same mechanism in the course of solar activity cycle. It is also pointed out that the SWS can be estimated by the RBR of group 1 with an empirical formula obtained in this paper during the entire solar activity cycle.  相似文献

The data on the variation of the Earth's rotation from IERS and the parameters of the solar wind measured by IPM 8 from July 1992 to September 1995 were used for a regression analysis. The results show that there seems to be a weak linear correlation between the velocity of the solar wind near the Earth, V, and the variation of the length of the day, lod1 calculated from UT1 and averaged over five days. The correlation coefficient is R=0.186. The preliminary conclusion is that the Earth's rotation could be influenced by the variation of the velocity of the solar wind with a short time scale of several days.  相似文献

An attempt is made to infer parameters of the solar corona and the solar wind by means of a numerical, self-consistent MHD simulation. Boundary conditions for the magnetic field are given from the observations of the large-scale magnetic field at the Sun. A two-region, planar (the ecliptic plane is assumed) model for the solar wind flow is considered. Region I of transonic flow is assumed to cover the distances from the solar surface up to 10R S (R S is the radius of the Sun). Region II of supersonic, super-Alfvénic flow extends between 10R S and the Earth's orbit. Treatment for region I is that for a mixed initial-boundary value problem. The solution procedure is similar to that discussed by Endler (1971) and Steinolfson, Suess, and Wu (1982): a steady-state solution is sought as a relaxation to the dynamic equilibrium of an initial state. To obtain a solution to the initial value problem in region II with the initial distribution of dependent variables at 10R S (deduced from the solution for region I), a numerical scheme similar to that used by Pizzo (1978, 1982) is applied. Solar rotation is taken into account for region II; hence, the interaction between fast and slow solar wind streams is self-consistently treated. As a test example for the proposed formulation and numerical technique, a solution for the problem similar to that discussed by Steinolfson, Suess, and Wu (1982) is obtained. To demonstrate the applicability of our scheme to experimental data, solar magnetic field observations at Stanford University for Carrington rotation 1682 are used to prescribe boundary conditions for the magnetic field at the solar surface. The steady-state solution appropriate for the given boundary conditions was obtained for region I and then traced to the Earth's orbit through region II. We compare the calculated and spacecraft-observed solar wind velocity, radial magnetic field, and number density and find that general trends during the solar rotation are reproduced fairly well although the magnitudes of the density in comparison are vastly different.  相似文献

The spatial structure of the transverse oscillations in the interplanetary magnetic field at 1 AU is studied by comparing the simultaneous observations by Explorer 33 and 35 satellites at the maximum separation of about 200R E. The anisotropy characteristics of these oscillations suggest that the oscillations sampled are Alfvén waves. It is found that the size of the region of the wave coherence is related to the solar wind velocity; the size is 80R E when the wind velocity is lower than 500 km s–1 but becomes less than this when the wind velocity is higher. An inference is made that the solar atmospheric turbulence contributing to the faster solar wind is finer in scale than that associated with the slower wind.A postgraduate student at the Tokai University  相似文献

Under a fully electromagnetic treatment, the threshold for excitation of the lower hybrid instability driven by solar wind electron heat flux is found to be much higher than that predicted by electrostatic approximation. For average solar wind conditions at 1 AU, the fully electromagnetic lower hybrid instability is excited when the core electron drift speed is about 8V A, whereV A is the Alfvén speed. The region between the Sun and 1 AU is expected to be more favourable than 1 AU for this instability.  相似文献
