The use of an auxiliary beamsplitter with the Kitt Peak 15-foot spectroheliograph permits spectroheliograms to be taken simultaneously in 4 identical images of the sun. By using two of these images for a Zeeman spectroheliogram, a third image for a Fei 4071 spectroheliogram, and the fourth image for a 6107Å continuum spectroheliogram, simultaneous measurements of magnetic fields and brightness fields have been obtained. Within the limits of intensity variations imposed by doppler shifts and brightness fluctuations of the continuum, a quantitative relation does exist between the measured values of brightness and magnetic field strength of the photospheric network. For intensities measured +0.12 Å from the core of Fei 4071, this relation is ln(1 +I/I) = ¦B ¦, whereB refers to the component of magnetic field normal to the solar surface,I/I is the fractional excess of brightness of the magnetic regions relative to the brightness of non-magnetic regions, and = (6±2)%/100 gauss.Kitt Peak National Observatory Contribution No. 538.Operated by The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.Visiting Astronomer, Solar Division, Kitt Peak National Observatory.  相似文献

The present paper extends the analysis by Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg (1991) on resonant Alfvén waves in nonuniform magnetic flux tubes. It proves that the fundamental conservation law for resonant Alfvén waves found in ideal MHD by Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg remains valid in dissipative MHD. This guarantees that the jump conditions of Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg, that connect the ideal MHD solutions for r , andP across the dissipative layer, are correct. In addition, the present paper replaces the complicated dissipative MHD solutions obtained by Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg for r , andP in terms of double integrals of Hankel functions of complex argument of order with compact analytical solutions that allow a straightforward mathematical and physical interpretation. Finally, it presents an analytical dissipative MHD solution for the component of the Lagrangian displacement in the magnetic surfaces perpendicular to the magnetic field lines which enables us to determine the dominant dynamics of resonant Alfvén waves in dissipative MHD.  相似文献

A series of H chromospheric magnetograms was obtained at various wavelengths near the line center with the vector video magnetograph at Huairou Solar Observing Station as a diagnostic of chromospheric magnetic structures. The two-dimensional distribution of the circular polarization light of the H line with its blended lines at various wavelength in active regions was obtained, which consists of the analyses of Stokes' profileV of this line. Due to the disturbance of the photospheric blended line Fei 4860.98 for the measurement of the chromospheric magnetic field, a reversal in the chromospheric magnetograms relative to the photospheric ones occurs in the sunspot umbrae. But in the quiet, plage regions, even penumbrae, the influence of the photospheric blended Fei 4860.98 line is not obvious. As regards the observation of the H chromospheric magnetograms, we can select the working wavelength between -0.20 and -0.24 from the line core of H to avoid the wavelengths of the photospheric blended lines in the wing of H.After the spectral analysis of chromospheric magnetograms, we conclude that the distribution of the chromospheric magnetic field is similar to the photospheric field, especially in the umbrae of the sunspots. The chromospheric magnetic field is the result of the extension of the photospheric field.  相似文献

A limiting case of the problem of three bodies (m 0,m 1,m 2) is considered. The distance between the bodiesm 0 andm 1 is assumed to be much less than that between their barycenter and the bodym 2 so that one may use Hill's approximation for the potential of interaction between the bodiesm 1 andm 2. In the absence of resonant relations the potential, double-averaged by the mean longitudes ofm 1 andm 2, describes the secular evolution of the orbits in the first approximation of the perturbation theory. As Harrington has shown, this problem is integrable. In the present paper a qualitative investigation of the evolution of the orbits and comparison with the analogous case in the restricted problem are carried out.The set of initial data is found, for which a collision between the bodiesm 0 andm 1 takes place. The region of the parameters of the problem is determined, for which plane retrograde motion is unstable. In a special example the results of approximate analysis are compared with those of numerical integration of the exact equations of the three body problem.

In this paper we continue the work of Weymann, investigating the causes of distortion of the spectrum of the residual radiation from the Planck curve. We discuss the distortion to the spectrum, resulting from recombination of primeval plasma. We then derive an analytic expression for the distortion to the equilibrium spectrum due to Compton scattering by hot electrons. On the basis of the observational data we conclude that a period of the existence of neutral hydrogen is inescapable in the hot model of the universe. It is concluded that any injection of energy att>1010 sec (red shiftz<105) give the distortions of the equilibrium spectrum.

We have studied the behavior of the inner motions of OH, H2CO, and CO molecular clouds. This study shows the existence of two main components of these clouds: the narrow one, associated to dense small clouds and a wide one representing the large diffuse clouds seen in neutral hydrogen, the large clouds are the vortex and intermediate state between turbulent and hydrodynamic motions in the Galaxy. For the dense clouds with sizesd<10 pc we have found a relationship d 0.38 consistent with the Kolmogorov law of turbulence; the densities and sizes of these clouds behave asnd –1. This last relation for these molecular clouds is compared with theHII one. Also, we discuss the effects of the inner magnetic field in these clouds.  相似文献

Since the average relation between the angular momentaP and the massesM of galaxies can be represented by a power lawPM , we can define a relative angular momentum =P/M (or a constant timeP/M ). For a random motion picture within protogalaxies, should follow a Maxwellian distribution and consequently the dispersion of log should be 0.210.For the reasonable range of ( to 2), the limited sample of galaxies with known dynamical parameters gives between and 1 times the Maxwellian value. For the plausible special case =2 the reciprocal of the maximum rotational velocityv m is already a measure of and the larger sample ofv m-values not only yields the Maxwellian but, moreover, shows the shape of the distribution.

The radial and the non-radial (l=2) modes of oscillation of a gaseous polytrope with a toroidal magnetic field are examined using a variational principle. It is found that the frequencies of oscillation of the radial mode and the Kelvin mode (l=2) decrease due to the presence of the magnetic field. The shift in the frequency of the Kelvin mode may be split up into two parts, viz. the shift in frequency due to the magnetic field on the unperturbed sphere [(12)m, say] and the shift in frequency due to the distortion of the structure by the magnetic field [(12)s, say]. In the first order calculations using one parameter trial function, it is found that (12)m is indeed positive but is overweighed by a negative (12)s. In the second order calculations using a trial function with two variational parameters, we find that the general behaviour of (12)m and (12)s is unchanged but that (12)m becomes negative for polytropic indicesn1.5.In Appendix I we study the effect of a small rotation and toroidal magnetic field on the structure of a polytrope. It is found that the resulting configuration is a prolate spheroid, a sphere or an oblate spheroid according as respectively. Here denotes the magnetic energy andT the kinetic energy due to rotation andq is a constant which depends on the polytropic indexn. The values ofq are given in Table I.  相似文献

Most of the MHD instabilities originating from the nonuniformity of a plasma excite MHD surface wave. When the excited wave has a frequency s which corresponds to the local shear Alfvén wave resonance (s = k v a (x), where v a is the Alfvén speed and k is the wave number in the direction of the magnetic field), the surface wave resonantly mode converts to the kinetic Alfvén wave, the Alfvén wave having a perpendicular wavelength comparable to the ion gyroradius and being able to propagate across the magnetic field. We discuss various linear and nonlinear effects of this kinetic Alfvén wave on the plasma including particle acceleration and heating. A specific example for the case of a MHD Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is given.  相似文献

The nature of thin, highly inclined threads observed in quiescent prominences has puzzled solar physicists for a long time. When assuming that the threads represent truly inclined magnetic fields, the supporting mechanism of prominence plasma against gravity has remained an open issue. This paper examines the levitation of prominence plasma exerted by weakly damped MHD waves in nearly vertical magnetic flux tubes. It is shown that the wave damping, and resulting `radiation pressure', caused predominantly by ion-neutral collisions in the `cold' prominence plasma, may balance the acceleration of gravity provided the oscillation frequency is 2 rad s–1 (f0.5 Hz). Such short wave periods may be the result of small-scale magnetic reconnections in the highly fragmentary magnetic field of quiescent prominences. In the proposed model, the wave induced levitation acts predominantly on plasma – neutral gas mixtures.  相似文献

Approximate solutions of the linearized non-adiabatic MHD equations, obtained using the ballooning method, are compared with exact numerical solutions of the full equations (including the effects of optically thin plasma radiation). It is shown that the standard ballooning method, developed within the framework of ideal linear MHD, can be generalized to non-ideal linear MHD. The localized (ballooning) spectrum has to be used with caution, but can give valuable (though limited) information on non-ideal stability. The numerical analysis also confirms and quantifies the interesting connection between magnetic and thermal instabilities. The existence of such a coupling is inherent in many qualitative discussions of magnetic disruptions. Finally, the hitherto unrecognized role of the thermal continuum in the unstable part of the magnetothermal spectrum is investigated.Research Assistant of the National Fund for Scientific Research, Belgium.  相似文献

Quiescent prominences It is found that Heii 4686 is emitted in the same cold region of 10000 K as hydrogen, metal and neutral helium emission lines. This conclusion is based on the finding that the observed width of 4686 is the same as the calculated width of 4686. The calculated width is derived from the observed widths of hydrogen and metallic lines. The large intensity of Heii 4686 in 10000 K can be explained by the ionization of Heii due to the UV radiation below 228 Å that comes from the corona and the transition region.Loop prominences The very broad width (30 to 50 km s–1) of 4686 for two post-flare loop prominences shows that the Heii line is emitted in hot regions different from regions of hydrogen and metal emission. From the widths of the Balmer lines and many metallic lines the kinetic temperature for one loop is found to be 16000 K in one part and 7600 K in another part. The electron densities are 1012.0 cm–3 and less than 1011.0 cm–3 respectively.Chromosphere The intensity of 4686 in the chromosphere can be interpreted in terms of a temperature of 10000 K with the ionization due to UV radiation. But, since observations of the width of 4686 are not available, a definitive conclusion for the chromosphere cannot be reached.  相似文献

A new version of the theory of pulsar radio emission is developed for the case of a coaxial rotator. It is based on the electric field that we established [G. S. Sahakian, Astrofizika, 37, 97 (1994)] for the radiation channel (the channel of open magnetic field lines) and on convenient approximations for the electron energy obtained in [G. S. Sahakian and É. S. Chubarian, Astrofizika, 37, 255 (1994)]. It is shown that, owing to the emission of photons of curvature radiation by particles, e e+c', and photon annihilation, c e+e in the lower part of the radiation channel, a special region (the magnetic funnel) is formed in which vigorous cascade multiplication of particles occurs. The height of the magnetic funnel is h 6R0.2, where R is the radius of the neutron star and is its angular rotation rate. As a result of supersaturation of the plasma density in the magnetic funnel, a discharge occurs after each time intervalt5·10–7–0.8B 12 –1.4 R 6 –0.2 , i.e., the longitudinal electric field disappears (B is the magnetic induction in the star). During the active radiative processes in the magnetic funnel, two main fluxes of particles with high ultrarelativistic energies are formed: an upward flux of electrons and a positron flux falling onto the star's magnetic cap. These fluxes are accompanied by narrow strips of positron and electron fluxes, respectively, of considerably lower energy, which are fairly powerful, coherent radio sources. The pulsar's radio luminosity is calculated to be L7.4·10223.8 30 3 R 6 –2 erg/sec, where =BR 3/2 is the star's magnetic moment. Comparing this result with observations, we conclude that the magnetic moment and hence the mass of the neutron star evidently must be considerably smaller, on the average, for fast pulsars than for slow ones. It is shown that the magnetic moment of the neutron star can be determined from the intervals between micropulses in the pulse profiles. The problem of the origin of the macrostructure of the radio pulse is discussed.Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 38, No. 1, pp. 141–185, January – March, 1995.  相似文献

Infrared continuum observations of the Sun at wavelengths between 10 and 30 show a nonisothermal response of the upper photosphere to compression waves associated with the five-minute oscillations. Observations were made with four broad-band filters with effective transmission wavelengths between 10 and 26 and with a 10 aperture. Further observations at submillimeter wavelengths with a 2 aperture did not resolve oscillatory fluctuations of five-minute period.Comparisons with velocity field data of Howard (1976) suggest that the relaxation time of the photosphere exceeds (300/2) seconds at the height of formation of the 26 continuum (5000Å 10-2). The photosphere reponds to 3 mHz oscillatory motion with considerably less compression than expected for simple acoustic modes in an adiabatically responsive atmosphere, confirming the evanescent character of the five-minute oscillations.  相似文献

Nutational dampers of dual-spin satellites
The paper considers application of the small parameter methods (Artemjev, 1944; Volosov, 1962) in the linear theory of damping the nutating motion of dual-spin satellites. The external moments affecting the satellite are left out of consideration. The influence of the damper on the satellite motion is assumed to be small. As a special case the conditions of stability for the satellite stationary spinning and the optimal parameters ensuring a maximal rate of damping the nutating motion have been obtained.

The effect of ion–neutral collisions on the propagation of MHD waves and surface waves at a single magnetic interface is investigated. The dispersion equations for MHD waves in a partially ionized medium are derived. There are three damped propagating modes in a uniform unbounded medium: an Alfvén mode, and fast and slow modes. The damping of waves depends on both the collisional frequency and the ionization fraction. Wave damping increases as ionization fraction decreases. Surface waves are discussed in three cases: (a) the incompressible limit, (b) the low plasma, and (c) for parallel propagation. The incompressible limit leads to Alfvén surface waves in a partially ionized medium and the dispersion characteristics are similar to those obtained by Uberoi and Datta. In the low plasma of the Earth's auroral F region there are two damped propagating magnetoacoustic surface waves for =/3. There is only one damped surface mode for =/2, but no surface wave is able to propagate for =0°. For the case of parallel propagation (=0°) the results obtained in the absence of ion-neutral collisions are consistent with the results of Jain and Roberts. It is found that a three-mode structure of damped propagating waves occurs owing to ion–neutral collisions for a comparatively high ionization fraction. For the case of the solar photosphere, where the ionization fraction is low, two weakly damped surface waves are found, though the damping is almost negligible. The pattern of propagation is similar to that found in the case discussed by Jain and Roberts, but the wave speeds are lower due to ion–neutral collisions. The strong collisions tie the ion–neutral species together and reduce the damping.  相似文献
