We consider sulphur depletion in dense molecular clouds, and suggest hydrated sulphuric acid, H2SO4 ·  n H2O, as a component of interstellar dust in icy mantles. We discuss the formation of hydrated sulphuric acid in collapsing clouds and its instability in heated regions in terms of the existing hot core models and observations. We also show that some features of the infrared spectrum of hydrated sulphuric acid have correspondence in the observed spectra of young stellar objects.  相似文献

The reliability of modelling the far-infrared continuum to  13CO  J = 1 → 0  spectral line ratios applied to the Orion clouds (see previous paper in the series) on the scales of several parsecs (i.e. ∼7 pc) is tested by applying the models to simulated data. The two-component models are found to give the dust–gas temperature difference,  Δ T   , to within 1 or 2 K. However, other parameters like the column density per velocity interval and the gas density can be wrong by an order of magnitude or more. In particular, the density can be systematically underestimated by an order of magnitude or more. The overall mass of the clouds is estimated correctly to within a few per cent.
These results may permit us to reliably constrain estimates of the Orion clouds' physical parameters, based on the real observations of the far-infrared continuum and  13CO  J = 1 → 0  spectral line. Nevertheless, other systematics must be treated first. These include the effects of background/foreground subtraction, effects of the H  i component of the interstellar medium, and others. We relate the equivalent widths of the major diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) near 5797 and 5780 Å with different colour excesses, normalized by E ( B − V ) , which characterize the growth of interstellar extinction in different wavelength ranges. It is demonstrated that the two DIBs correlate best with different parts of the extinction curve, and the ratio of these diffuse bands is best correlated with the far-ultraviolet (UV) rise. A number of peculiar lines of sight are also found, indicating that the carriers of some DIBs and the far-UV extinction can be separated in certain environments, e.g. towards the Per OB2 association.  相似文献

We relate the equivalent widths of 11 diffuse interstellar bands, measured in the spectra of 49 stars, to different colour excesses in the ultraviolet. We find that most of the observed bands correlate positively with the extinction in the neighbourhood of the 2175-Å  bump. Correlation with colour excesses in other parts of the extinction curve is more variable from one diffuse interstellar band to another; we find that some diffuse bands (5797, 5850 and 6376 Å) correlate positively with the overall slope of the extinction curve, while others (5780 and 6284 Å) exhibit negative correlation. We discuss the implications of these results on the links between the diffuse interstellar band carriers and the properties of the interstellar grains.  相似文献

We present ISOPHOT observations of eight interstellar regions in the 60–200 μm wavelength range. The regions belong to mostly quiescent high-latitude clouds and have optical extinction peaks from   AV ∼1–6 mag  . From the 150- and 200-μm emission, we derived colour temperatures for the classical big grain component which show a clear trend of decreasing temperature with increasing 200-μm emission. The 200-μm emission per unit   AV   , however, does not drop at lower temperatures. This fact can be interpreted in terms of an increased far-infrared (FIR) emissivity of the big grains. We developed a two-component model including warm dust with the temperature of the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) of   T = 17.5 K  , and cold dust with   T = 13.5 K  and FIR emissivity increased by a factor of >4. A mixture of the two components can reproduce the observed colour variations and the ratios   I 200/ AV   and  τ200/ AV   . The relative abundance of small grains with respect to the big grains shows significant variations from region to region at low column densities. However, in lines of sight of higher column density, our data indicate the disappearance of small grains, perhaps a signature of adsorption/coagulation of dust. The larger size and porous structure could also explain the increased FIR emissivity. Our results from eight independent regions suggest that these grains might be ubiquitous in the galactic ISM.  相似文献

We show that in a quiescent, dense pre-stellar core, exposed to the average interstellar radiation field, radiation pressure can cause the dust to migrate inwards, relative to the gas, on a time-scale of a few megayears – and faster if the radiation field is stronger than average. This has two potentially important effects.
First, there is an increase in the abundance of dust relative to gas in the inner parts of the core, and hence also in the efficiency of gas-cooling by dust. The increased cooling efficiency predisposes these regions to dynamical collapse and star formation. Additionally, it predisposes them to fragmentation, particularly if – as seems likely – the dust enhancements are stochastic and inhomogeneous, due to anisotropy of the incident radiation field and/or to directing of the migration by the local magnetic field. It also increases the metallicities of the resulting stars, and hence presumably the likelihood of planet formation in their accretion discs.
Secondly, there is a steepening of the optical-depth profile, especially at those impact parameters b where the visual optical depth through the core   τ t∼1  . Since the observational evidence for steep optical-depth profiles in the outer envelopes of some pre-stellar cores (specifically   τ t∝ b - β   , with   β ≳2)  constrains only the dust column density, this leaves open the possibility that the gas has a shallower column-density profile.  相似文献

We have applied the method of investigating extinction curves using statistically meaningful samples that was proposed by us 25 years ago. The extensive data sets of the ANS (Astronomical Netherlands Satellite) and 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) were used, together with UBV photometry to create average extinction curves for samples of OB stars. Our results demonstrate that in the vast majority of cases the extinction curves are very close to the mean galactic extinction curve. Only a few objects were found to be obviously discrepant from the average. We present isophot spectrophotometry of three positions within the isolated high-latitude cirrus cloud G 300.2−16.8, spanning from the near- to far-infrared (NIR to FIR). The positions exhibit contrasting emission spectrum contributions from the unidentified infrared bands (UIBs), very small grains (VSGs) and large classical grains, and both semi-empirical and numerical models are presented. At all three positions, the UIB spectrum shapes are found to be similar and the large grain emission may be fitted by an equilibrium temperature of  ∼17.5 K  . The energy requirements of both the observed emission spectrum and optical scattered light are shown to be satisfied by the incident local interstellar radiation field (ISRF). The FIR emissivity of dust in G 300.2−16.8 is found to be lower than in globules or dense clouds and is even lower than model predictions for dust in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). The results suggest physical differences in the ISM mixtures between positions within the cloud, possibly arising from grain coagulation processes.  相似文献

We study the rotation rates and electric dipole emission of hydrogenated icosahedral fullerenes under the physical conditions of the dark cloud (DC) LDN 1622. The abundance of fullerenes is estimated by fitting theoretical photoabsorption spectra to the characteristics of the ultraviolet (UV) bump extinction in DCs. The UV bump appears to be well reproduced by a mixture of fullerenes following a size-distribution power law, which gives progressively lower abundances as the radius of the fullerene increases. We infer abundances of the order of  0.2 × 10−6  n (H 2)  for C60. A significant fraction of these molecules are expected to be hydrogenated. We compute the electric dipole rotational emission from these fullerene hydrides, taking into account rotational excitation and damping processes. The recent detection of anomalous microwave emission (5–60 GHz) in LDN 1622 by Casassus et al. can be explained as the result of electric dipole radiation from hydrogenated fullerenes. The bulk of the emission (10–30 GHz) appears to be associated with 60–80 carbon atom fulleranes with a degree of hydrogenation of C:H ≈ 3:1. A small contribution (∼10 per cent) of these molecules residing in the surrounding cold neutral medium and/or photodissociation region of the cloud is required to fit the high-frequency tail (40–60 GHz) of the emission.  相似文献

We present the computation of effective refractive coefficients for inhomogeneous two-component grains with three kinds of inclusions with   m incl= 3.0 + 4.0i, 2.0 + 1.0i, 2.5 + 0.0001i  and a matrix with   mm = 1.33 + 0.01i  for 11 volume fractions of inclusions from 0 to 50 per cent and wavelengths  λ= 0.5  , 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 μm. The coefficients of extinction for these grains have been computed using a discrete dipole approximation. Computation of the extinction by the same method for grains composed of a matrix material with randomly embedded inclusions has been carried out for different volume fractions of inclusions. A comparison of extinction coefficients obtained for both models of grain material allows one to choose the best mixing rule for a mixture. In cases of inclusions with   m incl= 2.0 + 1.0i  and 2.5 + 0.0001i the best fit for the whole wavelength range and volume fractions of inclusions from 0 to 50 per cent has been obtained for the Lichtenecker mixing rule. In the case of   m incl= 3.0 + 4.0i  the fit for the whole wavelength range and volume fractions of inclusions from 0 to 50 per cent is not very significant but the best fit has been obtained for the Hanai rule. For volume fractions of inclusions from 0 to 15 per cent a very good fit has been obtained for the whole wavelength range for Rayleigh and Maxwell-Garnett mixing rules.  相似文献

The identity of the carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) is one of the most fascinating puzzles of modern spectroscopy. Over the last few years the number of known DIBs has grown substantially. In this paper we discuss the two recently discovered near-infrared weak interstellar features which have already been proposed as fingerprints of the buckminsterfullerene We present and discuss measurements of the two related DIBs within a larger sample of reddened targets, observed with different spectrometers, telescopes and site conditions. We provide additional arguments in favour of the interstellar origin of the two bands. We find evidence around the 9577-Å DIB of far-wing structures, which may affect broad-band measurements. We estimate corrections and errors for telluric and stellar blends, and show that the cores of the two DIBs are well correlated with a ratio near unity within 20 per cent. Finally, we discuss their relation to the laboratory spectra of and the search for two expected weaker transitions.  相似文献

A full radiative transfer model is presented for the ultraviolet (UV) radiation impinging on an interstellar cloud of spherical or finite plane-parallel slab geometry containing gas and dust. The penetration of the UV photons is coupled to detailed chemical processes. Photodestruction rates of atomic and molecular species are calculated from the corresponding cross-sections. We show that CO line intensities are quite sensitive to geometrical effects and to the extinction curve in the far-UV.  相似文献

We report new infrared and submillimetre observations of a sample of 24 candidate Vega-excess stars, and derive CO masses, dust masses, gas to dust ratios and the strengths of various emission lines. Most of these stars have dustier discs than the class archetypes (Vega, Fomalhaut, β Pic, etc.), yet, like the archetypes, all the stars observed in CO show the gas content of their discs to be depleted compared with molecular cloud values. We discuss how the extra dust content might imply that these stars are less evolved than the archetypes, and use other infrared and submillimetre characteristics to support this contention.  相似文献

The chemical desorption of an adsorbed CO molecule in the vicinity of H2-forming sites on cosmic dust grains in cold dense clouds is investigated theoretically, mainly using a model based on a classical molecular dynamics computational simulation. As a model surface for icy mantles of dust grains, an amorphous water ice slab is generated at 10 K, and the first and the second H atoms are thrown on to the model surface to reproduce the recombination process of the two H atoms, H+H→H2. Then, the time and space dependence of the local temperature increase of icy mantles caused by the release of H2 formation energy in the vicinity of H2-forming sites is examined. It is found that icy mantles are heated locally up to about 30 K in the surface region at R 4 Å and about 20 K at 4 R 6 Å, where R is the distance from the H2-forming site. The critical temperature of CO desorption is estimated to be about 20–30 K under conditions in typical dense clouds, which might be seen to be comparable to the above result. However, the lifetime of local heating of icy mantles is found to be too short, compared with the time-scale of CO desorption (1013 s) and that for H2 forming in the vicinity of an adsorbed CO molecule (more than 2×1013 s). Thus, it is found that the efficiency of chemical desorption of CO on a large dust grain is negligible. On the other hand, chemical desorption can occur on a small dust grain with size less than 20 Å.  相似文献
