We report the 6-cm radio-continuum detection of a previously unknown radio star, HIP 68718, identified by the Hipparcos satellite as an EB or β-Lyrae type optical variable. Only five prior radio detections of this type are reported in the literature. The radio source (VLA J140402−002145) was detected at the 6σ level, with an associated <1 arcsec position error. The radio-optical separation is 0.2 arcsec and is well within the position errors. A ROSAT X-ray source (RXJ 1404.0−0021) is located 4.5 arcsec from the radio position. Based on the component spectral types (F5V + G5V), 1.52 d period, variations in the peak of the light curve and the X-ray and 6-cm radio luminosities, we conclude the star is a candidate RS CVn. The binary is in a near-contact phase based on the asymmetric light curve (O'Connell effect). Evidence of two faint possible companion objects was also found in the J - and K -band Two-Micron All-Sky Survey images.  相似文献

G302 = L3107 is a red star located at the lowest end of the red giant branch of the globular cluster M4. According to its location on the C-M diagram, G302 may be a cluster member. No proper motion or radial velocity determinations are available up to date.

We discovered that C302 is a new variable star with a main period of 1.24719 day and a peak to peak amplitude of about 0.3 mag in V. It may have a second period of 2.38249 day with an amplitude of about 0.05 mag. If it is a cluster member, then there will be interesting implications for the the theory of stellar evolution.  相似文献

We present the results of a CCD Johnson V and photoelectric Strömgren uvbyβ photometric study of the recently discovered multiperiodic δ Sct star GSC 2683-3076. Our data set mainly consists of 2874 differential measurements in V together with a few data collected into the uvbyβ system. Additional unfiltered CCD measurements were also carried out. A set of seven best-fitting pulsation frequencies representing the light variations of the variable has been detected. The spectral type of the variable is found to be A9V or F0V. Using the uvbyβ indices the following main physical parameters for the variable have been derived: T eff=7230 K , M V =1.95 mag , log  g =3.90 , M =1.85 M , R =2.30 R , ρ =0.16  ρ , age =1.0 Gyr , metal abundance [Me/H]=0.16 and distance modulus =8.4 mag . GSC 2683-3076 is found to be a Population I δ Sct star, slightly metal-enriched, evolving on its main-sequence stage. A mixture of radial and non-radial modes seems to be present in the pulsation of this variable. This star is also known as H133 in the young open cluster NGC 6871, however arguments are given that address this star as a non-member of the cluster. The uvbyβ photometry available in the literature for NGC 6871 is also discussed.  相似文献

G298 = L3216 (V = 12.68, B?V = 0.59) is a field star in the direction of the globular cluster M4. It was used as one of our comparison stars in the past, now it is shown that G298 is a new γ Dor variable star with a period of 1.03099 day and peak to peak amplitude of about 0.02 mag in V. Its spectral type is F2 (IV ?).  相似文献

Elemental abundances of 28 And (A7 III) and 99 Her (F7 V), which have modest rotational velocities, are derived in a manner consistent with previous studies in this series of papers. The values for 28 And, a δ Scuti variable, show that it is slightly metal-poor, but not a classical Am star. 99 Her, which is somewhat more metal-poor, has a rather small microturbulence for its spectral type.

We present time-resolved, J ‐band (1.025–1.340 μm) infrared spectra of the short-period dwarf novae (DNe) WZ Sge and VY Aqr, and single spectra of the short-period DN EF Peg and the nova-like variable PX And. There is some evidence in the spectra of VY Aqr and EF Peg that we have detected the secondary star, both in the continuum slope and also through the possible presence of spectral features. The spectra of WZ Sge and PX And, on the other hand, show no evidence for the secondary star, with upper limits for its contribution to the J ‐band light of 10 and 20 per cent respectively. The spectral type of the secondary in WZ Sge is constrained to be later than M7.5V. Using skew mapping, we have been able to derive a value for the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the secondary star in VY Aqr of K R =320±70 km s−1, which in conjunction with K W from Thorstensen & Taylor gives a mass ratio of q =0.15±0.04.  相似文献

IRAS 01005+7910 is a cold IRAS source. We present its optical identification, photometric and spectroscopic observation results. Its optical counterpart is classified as a B2Ie star with V magnitude 10.85. Its Hα line shows the P Cygni profile.According to its location in the Galaxy (b=16.6), we consider it to be a post-AGB star or a proto-planetary nebula.  相似文献

The star WR 7a, also known as SPH 2, has a spectrum that resembles that of V Sagittae stars although no O  vi emission has been reported. The Temporal Variance Spectrum – TVS – analysis of our data shows weak but strongly variable emission of O  vi lines which is below the noise level in the intensity spectrum.
Contrary to what is seen in V Sagittae stars, optical photometric monitoring shows very little, if any, flickering. We found evidence of periodic variability. The most likely photometric period is   P phot= 0.227(±14) d  , while radial velocities suggest a period of   P spec= 0.204(±13) d  . One-day aliases of these periods can not be ruled out. We call attention to similarities with HD 45166 and DI Cru (= WR 46), where multiple periods are present. They may be associated to the binary motion or to non-radial oscillations.
In contrast to a previous conclusion by Pereira et al., we show that WR 7a contains hydrogen. The spectrum of the primary star seems to be detectable as the N  v 4604 Å  absorption line is visible. If so, it means that the wind is optically thin in the continuum and that it is likely to be a helium main sequence star.
Given the similarity to HD 45166, we suggests that WR 7a may be a qWR – quasi Wolf–Rayet – star. Its classification is WN4h/CE in the Smith, Shara & Moffat three-dimensional classification system.  相似文献

We review the classification of the variable star SW Equulei, formerly classified as a close binary of the W UMa type with a period of 0.83632 d and components of spectral types O–A or F–G and later. New observations indicate that the light curve is not that of an eclipsing binary but of a pulsating star with a period half of the old value. Further examination shows that SW Equulei is a double mode star of the RRd Lyrae type with a fundamental period of P = 0.560727 d and an overtone of P = 0.4181777 d at a distance of ≈ 7.1 kpc. A66 is a red star located at the lowest end of the red giant branch (near the top of the sub-giant branch) of the globular cluster M4. According to its location on the GM diagram, A66 may be a cluster member. No proper motion and radial velocity determinations are available up to date.

We discovered that A66 is a small-amplitude new variable star with a period of about one day and the peak to peak amplitude is about 0.05 mag in V.

However, if its membership can be confirmed by proper motion and radial velocity determinations, the cause of light variation may be not pulsation. This is because according to Xiong's theory, a red star at such low luminosity can not pulsate at a period longer than 0.1 day. Then other causes such as EW type eclipsing variable star or rotation of a spotted star might be responsible. Otherwise A66 is not a cluster member.  相似文献

The sdB star PG 1336−018 is found to be a very short-period eclipsing binary system, remarkably similar to the previously unique system HW Vir. In addition, and unlike HW Vir, the sdB star in the PG 1336 system shows rapid oscillations of the type found in the recently discovered sdB pulsators, or EC 14026 stars. The orbital period, 0.101 0174 d, is one of the shortest known for a detached binary. Analysis of photoelectric and CCD photometry reveals pulsation periods near 184 and 141 s, with semi-amplitudes of ∼0.01 and ∼0.005 mag respectively. Both oscillations might have variable amplitude, and it is probable that other frequencies are present with amplitudes ∼0.003 mag or less. The 184- and 141-s pulsations are in the range of periods predicted by models for hot horizontal-branch stars. Analysis of medium-dispersion spectrograms yields T eff=33 000±1000 K and log g =5.7±0.1 for the sdB primary star, a radial velocity semi-amplitude K 1=78±3 km s−1 and a system velocity γ=6±2 km s−1. Spectrograms from the IUE Final Archive give T eff=33 000±3000 K and E ( B − V )=0.05 for log g =6.0 models. The derived angular radius leads to a distance of 710±50 pc for the system, and an absolute magnitude for the sdB star of +4.1±0.2. A preliminary analysis of U , V and R light curves indicates the orbital inclination to be near 81° and the relative radii to be r 1=0.19 and r 2=0.205. Assuming the mass of the sdB primary to be 0.5 M⊙ leads to a mass ratio q =0.3 for the system, and indicates that the secondary is a late-type dwarf of type ∼M5. As with HW Vir, it is necessary to invoke small limb-darkening coefficients and high albedos for the secondary star to obtain reasonable fits to the observed light curves.  相似文献

V390 Aur is classified as a G8 spectral class active single giant by Fekel and Marshall (1991). Multi‐site cooperative high‐speed photoelectric monitoring was carried out for it in the period 1998‐2003 as part of a program developed in Bulgaria recently to study chromospherically active evolved stars. Astronomers from Greece and Ukraine joined the flare activity study of V390 Aur in 2000. As a result, several flares with a duration from seconds to minutes were detected on this star at 3 observatories. Taking into account all the events detected, the flare rate of the star is estimated to 0.205 flares per hour. Comparison with the active dwarfs AD Leo and EV Lac indicates that the flare rate of V390 Aur is lower than that of AD Leo but comparable with the well‐known flare star EV Lac. We present surface spot maps of the K2V primary star in the pre-cataclysmic variable binary system, V471 Tau. The spot maps show the presence of large high-latitude spots located at the sub-white dwarf longitude region. By tracking the relative movement of spot groups over the course of four nights (eight rotation cycles), we measure the surface differential rotation rate of the system. Our results reveal that the star is rotating rigidly with a surface shear rate,  dΩ= 1.6 ± 6 mrad d−1  . The single active star AB Dor has a similar spectral type, rotation period and activity level as the K star in V471 Tau, but displays much stronger surface shear  (46 < dΩ < 58 mrad d−1)  . Our results suggest that tidal locking may inhibit differential rotation; this reduced shear, however, does not affect the overall magnetic activity levels in active K dwarfs.  相似文献

We report on the discovery of a new short-periodic pulsating variable star in the field of the pulsating sdB star KPD 2109+4401. The star was observed on 10 consecutive nights. Based on the light curves, we detect three pulsation frequencies at 10.308, 4.023 and 11.075 cycle d−1 with amplitudes of 11.1, 4.3 and 4.2 milli-magnitudes, respectively. Using the existing data from other sky surveys, we estimate a spectral type of late F and other atmospheric parameters. Then we discuss the observational properties of the star. Finally it is classified to be a new low-amplitude multiperiodic δ Scuti star. A future interest addressed is to accurately determine the star's spectral type and then to judge a possible link to γ Doradus-type pulsation.  相似文献

Simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observations of the Z Cam type dwarf nova SY Cancri were used to obtain absolute flux calibrations. A comparison of the photometric calibration with a wide-slit spectrophotometric calibration showed that either method is equally satisfactory. A radial velocity study of the secondary star, made using the far-red Na  i doublet, yielded a semi-amplitude of   K 2= 127 ± 23 km s−1  . Taking the published value of  86 ± 9 km s−1  for K 1 gives a mass ratio of   q = M 2/ M 1= 0.68 ± 0.14  ; this is very different from the value of  1.13 ± 0.35  quoted in the literature. Using the new lower mass ratio, and constraining the mass of the white dwarf to be within reasonable limits, then leads to a mass for the secondary star that is substantially less than would be expected for its orbital period if it satisfied a main-sequence mass–radius relationship. We find a spectral type of M0 that is consistent with that expected for a main-sequence star of the low mass we have found. However, in order to fill its Roche lobe, the secondary must be significantly larger than a main-sequence star of that mass and spectral type. The secondary is definitely not a normal main-sequence star.  相似文献

Photometric observations over three seasons show HD 288313 to be a light variable with a 2.2636-d period. The observed V amplitudes lie in the range of 0.06–0.15 mag. The star showed appreciable changes in the brightness at maximum and minimum of the light curve from season to season. The (   b − y   ) colour did not show any significant variation during the photometric cycle. The light variation appears to be caused by the rotational modulation of stellar flux by cool starspots distributed asymmetrically across the stellar longitudes. The Hα line strength in HD 288313 varied drastically from completely filled-in emission to almost full absorption, that is typical of a normal star of similar spectral type. The Hα equivalent width is found to show a clear rotational modulation only occasionally. Most of the time, chromospheric active regions are distributed well across the stellar longitudes, thereby suppressing obvious rotational modulations. Broad-band linear polarization measurements show HD 288313 to be a short period, low-amplitude polarization variable. The polarization variation is, apparently, rotationally modulated. Dust grain scattering in a non-spherical circumstellar envelope of a star with inhomogeneities in the surface brightness distribution seems to be the mechanism operating in producing the observed polarization.  相似文献

Intermediate-resolution (0.5–1 Å) optical spectroscopy of the cataclysmic variable (CV) SY Cnc reveals the spectrum of the donor star. Our data enable us to resolve the orbital motion of the donor and provide a new orbital solution, binary mass ratio and spectral classification. We find that the donor star has spectral-type G8 ± 2 V and orbits the white dwarf with   P = 0.382 3753 ± 0.000 0003  d,   K 2= 88.0 ± 2.9  km s−1 and   V sin  i = 75.5 ± 6.5  km s−1. Our values are significantly different from previous works and lead to   q = M 2/ M 1= 1.18 ± 0.14  . This is one of the highest mass ratios known in a CV and is very robust, because it is based on resolving the rotational broadening over a large number of metallic absorption lines. The donor could be a slightly evolved main sequence or descendant from a massive star which underwent an episode of thermal time-scale mass transfer.  相似文献

We present a phase-resolved spectroscopic study of the secondary star in the cataclysmic variable (CV) U Gem. We use our data to measure the radial velocity semi-amplitude, systemic velocity and rotational velocity of the secondary star. Combining this with literature data allows us to determine masses and radii for both the secondary star and white dwarf, which are independent of any assumptions about their structure. We use these to compare their properties to those of field stars and find that both components follow field mass–radius relationships. The secondary star has the mass, radius, luminosity and photometric temperature of an M2 star, but a spectroscopic temperature of M4. The latter may well be due to a high metallicity. There is a troubling inconsistency between the radius of the white dwarf inferred from its gravitational redshift and inclination and that inferred from its temperature, flux and astrometric distance.
We find that there are two fundamental limits to the accuracy of the parameters we can derive. First, the radial velocity curve of the secondary star deviates from a sinusoid, in part because of its asphericity (which can be modelled) and in part because the line flux is not evenly distributed over its surface. Secondly, we cannot be certain which spectral type is the best match for the lines of the secondary star, and the derived rotational velocity is a function of the spectral type of the template star used.  相似文献
