The interpretation of the observed-ray burstV/V max statistic in terms of spatial distributions is model-dependent. Detection of-ray bursts requires the counting rate in one or more detectors to exceed a thresholdC lim determined from a time-dependent background rateB(t). The sampling depth of the burst detector is thus time-dependent, and, if burst sources are non-uniform in space, the observedV/V max distribution will be affected byB(t). We demonstrate this effect with a simple geometric distribution of standard candles and argue thatV/V max statistic without information on threshold variations is insufficient for rigorous data analysis. Peak count rates and threshold values must be given separately for all events in order to facilitate a meaningful comparison of observations with theoretical distribution models.  相似文献

Spectrophotometric observations of Comet Austin (1982g) in the bands of CN, C2, and C3 are presented, and fit to a Haser model for the cometary brightness distribution. The lifetimes of the parent and daughter molecules, as well as the velocity of the molecules leaving the cometary surface are determined from the model fit. We investigate the viability of the Galactic corona model of -ray bursts by calculating the spatial distribution of neutron stars born with high velocities in the Galactic disk, and comparing the resulting brightness and angular distribution with the BATSE data. We find that the Galactic corona model can reproduce the BATSE peak flux and angular distribution data for neutron star kick velocities 800 km s–1, source turn-on ages 10 Myrs, and sampling depths 100 kpc d max 400 kpc.  相似文献

The distribution of the sources of the Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) recorded by the CGRO experiment is uniform for all directions in the sky, while the behaviour of the log N-log P suggests a space distribution of the events not homogeneous. The cosmological model can explain this result, but it cannot explain the presence of cyclotron lines in the burst energy spectra that has been observed by many experiments: the soviet KONUS experiment onboard VENERA probes, the Japanese GRBM experiment onboard GINGA satellite and, for only one candidate burst fortuitously observed, by the USA experiment A4 onboard HEAO1 satellite. In order to shed more light on this problem we present a new study of the log N-log P of the Gamma-Ray Bursts of the second BATSE catalogue.  相似文献

The fractal dimensionality of the distribution of gamma-ray bursts over the celestial sphere has been investigated. Current data from the BATSE experiment were used. The observations of the BATSE instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory show that the spatial distribution of -ray burst sources is isotropic but radially non-uniform. As is well known, the spectral features, the time histories and the X-ray tails present in some -ray bursts suggest that they may arise from galactic neutron stars. But, low velocity neutron stars born in the Galactic disk would concentrate toward the galactic plane and center, and could not fit the BATSE results. However, the high velocity neutron stars with velocity 1000 km s–1 may escape from the Galactic gravitational field and form a nearly isotropic distribution. Here we calculate the three statistical values of V/V max, sin2 b and cos as functions of the intensitiesC max/C min and find that they could be fitted by the distribution of high velocity neutron stars under the assumption that the high velocity neutron stars should turn on as -ray burst sources only after some time (perhaps after they have ceased to be radio pulsars). Our calculation shows that the statistical value of cos is more sensitive than sin2 b to the angular distribution of high velocity neutron stars, i.e. the deviation of cos from 0 is more readily detected than the deviation of sin2 b from 1/3, so we expect that with the increasing sensitivity of instrument and the more exact value of cos , it is possible to determine whether this high velocity neutron star model is correct. Both density- and luminosity-evolution of quasars proceed sumultaneously. If only one of them is considered, the value of V/V max would be too high. Here we present an idea that the quasar luminosity-redshift relationship curve can be obtained by statistics, from which the incompleteness-compensated factorK(Z|l min) for each source will be given, and then theV/V max test for density law can be carried out. We use this revisedV/V max test in investigating 3CR and 4C samples including the 3CR sources detected in X-ray. The result is that the space density distribution of quasars is relative toq o.  相似文献

Colliding comets in the Solar System may be an important source of gamma ray bursts. The spherical gamma ray comet cloud required by the results of the Venera Satellites (Mazets and Golenetskii, 1987) and the BATSE detector on the Compton Satellite (Meeganet al., 1992a, b) is neither the Oort Cloud nor the Kuiper Belt. To satisfy observations ofN(>P max) vsP max for the maximum gamma ray fluxes,P max > 10–5 erg cm–2 s–1 (about 30 bursts yr–1), the comet density,n, should increase asn a 1 from about 40 to 100 AU wherea is the comet heliocentric distance. The turnover above 100 AU requiresn a –1/2 to 200 AU to fit the Venera results andn a 1/4 to 400 AU to fit the BATSE data. Then the masses of comets in the 3 regions are from: 40–100 AU, about 9 earth masses,m E; 100–200 AU about 25m E; and 100–400 AU, about 900m E. The flux of 10–5 erg cm–2 s–1 corresponds to a luminosity at 100 AU of 3 × 1026 erg s–1. Two colliding spherical comets at a distance of 100 AU, each with nucleus of radiusR of 5 km, density of 0.5 g cm–3 and Keplerian velocity 3 km s–1 have a combined kinetic energy of 3 × 1028 erg, a factor of about 100 greater than required by the burst maximum fluxes that last for one second. Betatron acceleration in the compressed magnetic fields between the colliding comets could accelerate electrons to energies sufficient to produce the observed high energy gamma rays. Many of the additional observed features of gamma ray bursts can be explained by the solar comet collision source.  相似文献

Although the earliest observed gamma-ray burst spectra were well described by thermal bremsstrahlung models, subsequent observations above 1 MeV showed the existence of high energy power law tails in 60% of events. In order to accurately characterise burst spectra, both the low energy turnover and the high energy tail must be accounted for. We have addressed this issue by jointly deconvolving spectra obtained by BATSE and COMPTEL onboard theCompton Observatory. We present preliminary results obtained by application of this method to the gamma-ray burst of February 17, 1994.  相似文献

The oxygen abundance distribution in solar neighbourhood halo subdwarfs is deduced, using two alternative, known empirical relationships, involving the presence or the absence of [O/Fe] plateau for low [Fe/H] values, from a sample of 372 kinematically selected halo stars, for which the iron abundance distribution has been determined by Ryan & Norris (1991). The data are interpreted by a simple, either homogeneous or inhomogeneous model of chemical evolution, using an updated value of the solar oxygen abundance. The effect of changing the solar oxygen abundance, the power‐law exponent in the initial mass function, and the rate of oxygen nucleosyntesis, keeping the remaining input parameters unchanged, is investigated, and a theorem is stated. In all cases, part of the gas must necessarily be inhibited from forming stars, and no disk contamination has to be advocated for fitting the empirical oxygen abundance distribution in halo subdwarfs of the solar neighbourhood (EGD). Then a theorem is stated, which allows a one‐to‐one correspondence between simple, homogeneous models with and without inhibited gas, related to same independent parameters of chemical evolution, except lower stellar mass limit, real yield, and inhibition parameter. The mutual correlations between the latter parameters are also specified. In addition the starting point, and the point related to the first step, of the theoretical distribution of oxygen abundance (TGD) predicted by simple, inhomogeneous models, is calculated analytically. The mean oxygen abundance of the total and only inhibited gas, respectively, are also determined. Following the idea of a universal, initial mass function (IMF), a power‐law with both an exponent p = 2.9, which is acceptably close to Scalo IMF for mm, and an exponent p = 2.35, i.e. Salpeter IMF, have been considered. In general, both the age‐metallicity relationship and the empirical distribution of oxygen abundance in G dwarfs of the disk solar neighbourhood, are fitted by power‐law IMF exponents in the range 2.35 ≤ p ≤ 2.9. Acceptable models predict about 15% of the total mass in form of long‐lived stars and remnants, at the end of halo evolution, with a mean gas oxygen abundance which is substantially lower than the mean bulge and initial disk oxygen abundance. To avoid this discrepancy, either the existence of a still undetected, baryonic dark halo with about 15% of the total mass, or an equal amount of gas loss during bulge and disk formation, is necessary. The latter alternative implies a lower stellar mass limit close to 0.2 m, which is related to a power‐law IMF exponent close to 2.77. Acceptable models also imply a rapid halo formation, mainly during the first step, Δt = 0.5 Gyr, followed by a period (three steps) where small changes occur. Accordingly, statistical fluctuations are found to produce only minor effects on the evolution.  相似文献

We analyze the sky distribution of various types of cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs): short, long, and intermediate; they are determined by burst duration T 90 (T 90 is the time during which 90% of the burst energy is accumulated). We have found an anisotropy in the distribution of intermediate (2 s < T 90 < 8 s) and short (T 90 < 8 s) GRBs in the form of spots with an enhanced GRB concentration near the Galactic coordinates l=115° and b=30°. Given the BATSE nonuniform exposure function, the statistical significance of the anisotropy is 99.89% for intermediate GRBs and 99.99% for short GRBs. Thus, we suggest that this anisotropy has a natural origin and is not caused by BATSE instrumental effects.  相似文献

The Explosive Transient Camera (ETC) has been performing automatic observations of the night sky since 1990. Since the launch of the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory, the times and localizations of-ray bursts detected by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) have been compared with ETC observations to determine whether the ETC had observed a -ray burst in progress. To date, six temporal and spatial correlations have been found, but no new optical radiation has been detected. In this paper, we present current results of ETC/BATSE correlated observations and describe plans for future observations.  相似文献

A calculation of the non-steady development of a multi-species atmosphere of a comet moving in a near-parabolic heliocentric orbit is presented. The monochromatic brightness variations of the characteristic cometary emission bands due to OH, CN and C2 are then evaluated assuming that the parent molecules of these chemically unstable species are respectively H2O, HCN and H2C2 present in a homogeneous H2O clathrate nucleus. For small heliocentric distances where a quasi-steady approximation is valid, the brightness variations follow Levin's (1943) law, provided all the destruction mechanisms of the cometary molecules vary as the inverse square of the heliocentric distance. On the other hand, at large heliocentric distances Levin's law breaks down, essentially due to the large time-scales of residence of the emitting species in the cometary atmosphere. This large residence time at large heliocentric distance also produces an asymmetry between the brightness profiles of the inbound and outbound passages, such that the brightness declines less steeply with distance on the outbound passage than on the inbound. Consequently, the monochromatic brightness of OH at 4 AU outbound is about twice as large as the corresponding value inbound. While some comets show such an effect, others show just the opposite effect. These deviations, which show the limitations of our simple homogeneous model, are discussed qualitatively in terms of the plausible time varying physical structure of the cometary nucleus. The variations of the relative monochromatic brightnesses of the various emissions are also discussed, and the need for extending monochromatic brightness measurements to larger heliocentric distances is stressed.  相似文献

As part of our study to understand the nature of extragalactic radio sources which are very asymmetric in the surface brightness of the two lobes, often with radio emission on only one side of the nucleus, we have observed a large number of them with high angular resolution and good surface brightness sensitivity at radio frequencies. In this paper we present VLA and MERLIN observations of 15 such sources. We discuss their observed structures and spectra, and possible explanations for their morphologies. We report evidence of a possible correlation between the hot-spot brightness ratio and the degree of core prominence, used as a Statistical measure of source orientation, suggesting that relativistic beaming of the hot-spot emission does play a significant role in the observed brightness asymmetry. To explain the apparently one-sided sources within the relativistic beaming framework, the velocities required are in the range of 0.2 to 0.8c. We discuss the possibility that the lobe which is seen to the south of the jet in 3C273 is the counter-lobe seen in projection. We also draw-attention to a number of one-sided sources with very weak cores, and discuss their possible nature.  相似文献

A very long series of photographic observations of the comet Hale-Bopp has been made during January–April 1997 at the double astrograph (400/2000) of the Main Astronomical Observatory (Kyiv, Ukraine). Some of the cometary photos were obtained with two wide-band filter combinations. One of these combinations isolates C2 emission, another — the nearby dust continuum. The images were digitized by means of AMDPH-XY machine and then calibrated following the standard procedure. After subtraction of the dust continuum the distribution of surface brightness in the C2 emission coma of comet Hale-Bopp was studied. We found an asymmetric brightness distribution both pre- and post-perihelion. On 21.77 April 1997 a secondary brightness peak is found at the distance of 1.03 × 105 km from the nucleus. It is possible that this peak is related to the extended source of the C2 molecules. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

No absorption lines between 15 and 100 keV have been detected in burst spectra accumulated by BATSE. Almost 250 bursts have been inspected visually, and a computerized search has begun. Our simulations show that BATSE could indeed detect lines similar to those observed byGinga in strong bursts, and our tests of the detectors' actual capabilities demonstrate they function as understood. The apparent discrepancy between BATSE andGinga is not yet compelling, and therefore the BATSE nondetections do not invalidate theGinga detections. Nonetheless, the absence of BATSE line detections indicates a low line-occurrence frequency.  相似文献

Results of photoelectric observations in the Strömgren system of the Herbig Ae/Be star LkH 215 are presented. It is found that this star undergoes bursts. Two types of bursts are observed. The amplitude of the first type of burst increases with decreasing wavelength. In the second type of burst, the brightness amplitude has a maximum in the V band.  相似文献

In an effort to find local sources of the Slowly Varying Component (SVC), an analysis is made of the episodical observations carried out since 1972 during periods of low solar activity at 20 and 25 MHz. In contrast to other writers who reported on successful observations of such sources (Kundu et al., 1977; Sastry et al., 1981, 1983), we have not found local sources, though we used the UTR-2 radio telescope to observe from several to several tens brightness distributions of the quiet Sun per day.The multiple daily measurements allowed tracing the dynamics of the burst development. As has been found, bursts of high intensity can give rise to nonthermal radiation from the region of generation, thus producing a considerable increase in the maximum brightness temperature of scans across the Sun. The relaxation time of this process is 20 to 30 min. It is not improbable that this is the effect responsible for large variations in the maximum brightness temperatures of the scans that Sastry et al. (1981) connected with the SVC.25 MHz radioheliograms of April 29 and 30, 1976, are presented which supplement the data of observations at Clark Lake (Kundu et al., 1977). It is shown that the sources observed there on April 27 and April 29, 1976, were most likely of nonthermal nature.We conclude that at present, in spite of reports of some workers, there is no convincing evidence for the existence of local SVC sources at decameter wavelengths.
