Nutrient availability is known to mediate plant community structure in many systems, but relatively few studies of nutrient effects have been done in systems where strong gradients in physical stress might constrain the effects of nutrients. Recent studies in New England, United States, salt marshes indicate that nutrients may strongly mediate plant community composition by increasing the competitive ability of stress-tolerant species that are normally displaced by competition to recently-disturbed or low-intertidal habitats. It is unknown whether these results can be generalized to salt marshes in other geographic regions that experience different climates, tidal regimes, and edaphic conditions. To address the generality of these results from New England, we fertilized seven different mixtures of salt marsh plants at study sites on the southeast and Gulf coasts of the U.S. Two of these mixtures were studied in both geographic regions. Consistent with results from New England, fertilization always increased the biomass of the low-marsh dominantSpartina alterniflora and usually led to it increasing in dominance at the expense of high-marsh species. Fertilization also led to increased community dominance byDistichlis, but only in a mixture where it was already common. Fertilization led to changes in plant dominance patterns in four of the seven types of mixtures that we studied. Results were not a function of edaphic conditions, at least within the range included in our study, and were consistent between the southeastern and Gulf coasts, which experience markedly different tidal regimes. The broad similarity of these results suggests that changes in nutrient input may lead to predictable changes in the composition of similar salt marsh plant communities across large geographic areas despite site to site variation in the abiotic environment.  相似文献

Conflicting opinions exist concerning the structure and the post-Hercynian evolution of the Serre. The present paper deals with these topics on the basis of new geological, petrological and radiometric evidence. The composition of the so-called Stilo and Polia-Copanello units has been redefined. The above domains—former sections of upper and lower Palaeozoic continental crust respectively—came into contact, due to transcurrent movements 130–140 Ma ago. A significant vertical component during the transcurrent movements, probably, exhumed the former section of lower crust. The above domains, juxtaposed, were successively involved as a single kinematic body in the Alpine orogenesis. The results enable us to make inferences for the Calabrian Arc evolution and call attention to similarities between an Austro-Alpine element (Stilo + Polia-Copanello) of the Calabrian chain and a South-Alpine sector of the Alps (Ivrea + Ceneri zones).  相似文献

In the framework of the European project 'Climate change and coastal evolution in Europe', the microscale (< 1 year) morphological evolution of beaches in Brittany (W France) has been monitored for some years and linked to immediate forcings, the first one being tides (with a 13-m tidal range), and the second storm intensity. For the same sites, a mesoscale (decades) evolution was reconstructed from air photographs and historical data. The evolution is forced first of all by human activities, and secondly by climatic shift: wind direction changes and average wind velocity evolution. These results were used to build and calibrate a model of coastal behaviour. The model is based on a simple sediment cell (input – transit – output) and simulates the movements of volumes of sands under successive morphodynamic processes. Each of these processes is modelled (in terms of volume exchanges) and parameterized by the relevant atmospheric element. Thus, the model is not deterministic but simulates different probabilities for atmospheric events and morphological response. The model runs for one year and produces realistic sediment accumulation values and coastal retreat rates. When run for half a century, results are also quite comparable to the field data. Storm frequency changes appear to be an important element for the evolution, but the main and first forcing is the availability of sediment.  相似文献

The latest Pleistocene—Holocene megafauna extinction is a global event, particularly dramatic in the Americas. In a previous paper the authors hypothesised a scenario for this extinction event in South America, where mastodonts first suffered from the changing climate environment, followed by the mylodonts and equids. These different latest Pleistocene—Holocene megafauna extinction “waves” in Ecuadorian Andes have been dated using 14C methods on material from selected sites in north and central Ecuadorian Interandean Depression. An outline of the physiographic evolution of the Interandean Depression in Ecuador is offered and the stratigraphic setting of the fossiliferous sites is discussed. The present results confirm the author's hypothesis on the megafauna extinction pattern, previously published in terms of relative age. The importance of climatic changes during Last Glacial Maximum at low latitudes is discussed.  相似文献

Thirty-five archaeological sites between Lebanon and Gaza on the Mediterranean shore of Israel were surveyed for evidence of relative changes of sea level; and published and unpublished data were compiled on a further 23 sites. Remains of occupation levels were classified into 13 archaeological periods from Neolithic to Crusader, giving a good dating scale over the last 9000 years. The Bronze Age shoreline (4000 years B.P.) is shown to be very close to the present shore along most of the coast, with vertical changes of less than 1.0 m at most sites. For later periods the accuracy of measurement of relative changes of level was improved to a root sum square error of 28 cm.The mean and modal sea levels derived from all sites of the same archaeological period were plotted against time to indicate the most probable “eustatic” sea-level curve, though it is accepted that hydro-isostatic adjustment and broad-scale slow earth movements cannot be separated statistically from eustatic changes on a 200-km stretch of coast. The relative sea level is shown to have been between −70 cm and present sea level for the last 4000 years, with no evidence for oscillations of amplitude more than ±30 cm at periodicities longer than 400 years, and no high sea level still stands.Relative vertical displacement between sites of the same archaeological age is attributed to tectonism. The sites on the alluvium of the Haifa—Qish on graben show no signs of vertical displacement, but there is maximum activity to north and south. Acco, on the north margin, shows submergence of nearly 2.0 m since A.D. 1300, with probable uplift preceding that date. Mount Carmel, south of the graben, shows signs of only very slight relative change, possibly attributable to eustatic change, in the immediate vicinity of the graben. But the southern flank of the mountain, 20–80 km south of the southern fault of the Graben, shows active vertical movements on the whole coast. Dor and Caesarea indicate multiple vertical movements ranging from 1.0 to 5.0 m in the last 2000 years, and a slump or fault has intersected the harbour area of Caesarea about 150 m offshore. These observations are related briefly to recent geodetic levelling of the coast and graben area; observations on the Dead Sea Rift, and hypotheses of fault control of the linearity of the Israel Mediterranean coastline.  相似文献

Structures of four generations are decipherable both in the pre-Delhi rocks of central Rajasthan, and in the Delhi rocks of Khetri in northeastern Rajasthan and around Todgarh in central Rajasthan. There is a remarkable identity in the later phases of the deformational history of the two groups, with gravity-induced structures followed by conjugate folds due to longitudinal shortening (N-S in northeastern Rajasthan and NE-SW in central Rajasthan). The earlier stages of the structural history of the two groups are, however, significantly different. The E-W-trending reclined folds of the first generation in the pre-Delhi rocks are absent in the Delhi rocks throughout Rajasthan. The NNE- to NE-trending folds of the second generation in the pre-Delhi groups are upright, whereas these structures in the Delhi rocks are of two phases—recumbent folds, followed by coaxial upright folds. The folds of the first and the second phases in the Delhi rocks plunge gently NE or SW where they are not affected by subsequent deformations. But the NE-trending folds in the pre-Delhi rocks show an extreme variation in axial plunge from horizontal to vertical, even where they are unaffected by later movements. Evidence has been adduced to suggest that these differences in the earlier phases of the structural evolution of the two groups are due to an angular unconformity between the Delhi and the pre-Delhi rocks.  相似文献

The diffusional mass transfer of soluble components in pitted pebble conglomerates from the Alpine Molasse and the Carboniferous of northern Spain has been studied using electron microprobes. Two categories of pitted pebble conglomerates are distinguished depending on the presence or absence of an affected zone within the pebble which has suffered volume loss. In these affected zones there is a reduction of mobile components—Ca, Ba, Sr, and sometimes Si, and a concentration of immobile components—Mg, Al, Fe, Mn, Si, K, and Ti. The changes in relative abundances of different elements across these zones are shown to be dependent on the mineralogy of the dissolving pebble. This is interpreted as being partly due to the modification of the stress fields, developed within pebbles due to their composition. Theoretical predictions of the rates of pebble pitting are shown to be in reasonable agreement with natural examples. Most of the deformational structures in these conglomerates were produced by a diffusional mass transfer process such as pressure solution.  相似文献

The relationships between the land and sea in the northern Adriatic at the Pleistocene—Holocene boundary are examined by considering sea-level curves and archaeological data. Changes in the Mesolithic (Early Holocene) economy of the inhabitants can be interpreted as a result of palaeoecological variations due to glacioecustatic sea-level changes and recent tectonics. This hypothesis is also supported by evidence of older tectonic movements which may have continued until the end of the Pleistocene.  相似文献

Translocal assemblages: Space, power and social movements   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Colin McFarlane   《Geoforum》2009,40(4):561-567
In this paper, I deploy an analytic of ‘translocal assemblage’ as a means for conceptualising space and power in social movements. I offer a relational topology that is open to how actors within movements construct different spatial imaginaries and practices in their work. In using the prefix ‘translocal’, I am signifying three orientations. First, translocal assemblages are composites of place-based social movements which exchange ideas, knowledge, practices, materials and resources across sites. Second, assemblage is an attempt to emphasise that translocal social movements are more than just the connections between sites. Sites in translocal assemblages have more depth than the notion of ‘node’ or ‘point’ suggests – as connoted by network – in terms of their histories, the labour required to produce them, and their inevitable capacity to exceed the connections between other groups or places in the movement. Third, they are not simply a spatial category, output, or resultant formation, but signify doing, performance and events. I examine the potential of assemblage to offer an alternative account to that of the ‘network’, the predominant and often de facto concept used in discussions of the spatiality of social movements. I draw on examples from one particular translocal assemblage based in and beyond Mumbai which campaigns on housing within informal settlements: Slum/Shack Dwellers International.  相似文献

Recent geophysical measurements, including multi-channel seismic reflection, on the Svalbard passive margin have revealed that it has undergone a complex geological history which largely reflects the plate tectonic evolution of the Greenland Sea and the Arctic Ocean. The western margin (75–80°N) is of a sheared-rifted type, along which the rifted margin developed subsequent to a change in the pole of plate rotation about 36 m.y. B.P. The north-trending Hornsund Fault on the central shelf and the eastern escarpment of the Knipovich Ridge naturally divide the margin into three structural units. These main marginal structures strike north, paralleling the regional onshore fault trends. This trend also parallels the direction of Early Tertiary plate motion between Svalbard and Greenland. Thus, the western Svalbard margin was initially a zone of shear, and the shear movements have affected the adjacent continental crust. Although, the nature and location of the continent—ocean crustal transition is somewhat uncertain, it is unlikely to lie east of the Hornsund Fault. The northern margin, including the Yermak marginal plateau, is terminated to the west by the Spitsbergen Fracture Zone system. This margin is of a rifted type and the preliminary analysis indicates that the main part of the investigated area is underlain by continental crust.  相似文献

Paleopositions of the African, Indian and Antarctic plates are used as an independant set of data to test various hypotheses, derived from geophysical data, on the origin, emplacement mechanism and evolution of five aseismic structures of the Western and Southern Indian Ocean (Crozet and Kerguelen plateaus, Marion Dufresne, Léna and Ob seamount chain, Madagascar and Mascarene ridges).Except for a continental fragment of very limited extent bearing the Seychelles Islands, these structures, together with the Madagascar and Mascarene ridges, are probably due to anomalous volcanic episodes at —or near— active plate boundaries, rather than to intraplate emplacement. Their creation processes are therefore mainly related to the relative motions between the Antarctic, African and Indian plates. The volcanic episodes are synchronous with major changes in the relative motions between these plates and thus substantiate the role played by frequent irregularities in the kinematic pattern of the Western and Southern Indian Ocean, such as ridge jumps, asymmetric spreading and rapid variations in spreading velocity or direction. Finally, we think that thermal anomalies, located not far from active spreading boundaries, may have played a role in the physical processes creating the aseismic ridges.  相似文献

Recent crustal movements have been observed and studied in several parts of India including the Himalayan and sub-Himalayan regions, the Precambrian shield of peninsular India and also the coastal tracts. The results of studies of Holocene deformation and crustal movements in two type areas are presented, one in the extreme southeastern part of the peninsula and the other in northeastern India. The Precambrian shield in the extreme southeastern part is characterised by a major NE—SW trending fault zone in the Tirupattur—Mattur areas of Tamil Nadu with some major extended faults, one of which apparently cuts through the entire crust and Moho as indicated by gravity data and which is associated with occurrences of alkaline and basic intrusions and carbonatite complex. Evidence of Recent crustal movements in this zone is afforded by geomorphic features and recent and current seismicity of a mild nature which is apparently to be attributed to slow movements along the fault plane. The Shillong plateau in northeastern India occurs as block-uplifted horst, comprising for the most part Archaean crystalline rocks with plateau basalts and Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments occurring on its southern margin. The plateau is bounded by major faults and is located in a zone of high seismicity lying astride and parallel to the eastern Himalayas intervened by the alluvium of the Brahmaputra Valley. Geomorphic features such as raised terraces, straight-edged scarps, etc., provide evidence for Recent crustal movements with dominant vertical movements along the fault planes which have continued through Tertiary and Recent times. Repeated precision levelling measurements conducted by the Survey of India indicate a rate of uplift of 4–5 cm per 100 years during the period 1910–1975.The gravity data pertaining to this region are also discussed in relation to the crustal movements.  相似文献

Thermal water springs at Bristol and Bath in west England have come under close scrutiny since the closure of Bath Spa in 1978. In order to protect the hot springs from dewatering and loss of pressure due to largescale quarrying and deep drilling, it is necessary to identify the sources and routes whereby the thermal water travels to its resurgences in the Avon valley. Control over deep water movements is exercised by the structure and size of the aquifers and aquicludes, modified by zones of Quaternary—Recent fracturing along which water movements have not been restricted or blocked by mineralization.  相似文献

The Paleoproterozoic domain of the Ivory Coast lies in the central part of the West African Craton (WAC) and is mainly constituted by TTG, greenstones, supracrustal rocks and leucogranites. A compilation of metamorphic and radiometric data highlights that: i) metamorphic conditions are rather homogeneous through the domain, without important metamorphic jumps, ii) HP-LT assemblages are absent and iii) important volumes of magmas emplaced during the overall Paleoproterozoic orogeny suggesting the occurrence of long-lived rather hot geotherms. Results of the structural analysis, focused on three areas within the Ivory Coast, suggest that the deformation is homogeneous and distributed through the Paleoproterozoic domain. In details, results of this study point out the long-lived character of vertical movements during the Eburnean orogeny with a two folds evolution. The first stage is characterized by the development of “domes and basins” geometries without any boundary tectonic forces and the second stage is marked by coeval diapiric movements and horizontal regional-scale shortening. These features suggest that the crust is affected by vertical movements during the overall orogeny. The Eburnean orogen can then be considered as an example of long-lived Paleoproterozoic “weak type” orogen.  相似文献

In this paper, the processes related to subduction and mountain building are discussed, and some new models and notions are proposed. At all known epochs, the Earth's surface comprised essentially migrating plates and large belts (of the order of 10,000 × 2000 km) where the lithosphere is mobilised, so that subductions and crustal resorption occur in complex structural patterns. Through time, these orogens start as island arcs and evolve into folded ranges. The formation and location of island-arc belts is shown to be related to the obliquity between rifts and continental margins i.e. to lateral relative movements of plates: torsion couples are developed bringing arcs to bulge through the inducted arc mechanism. This accounts for tensions prevailing in the back-arc basin while compressive stresses accumulate as vertical deformations in the arc-trench or uplift—subsidence couple. When the rupture limit is reached, a tangential tectonic phase occurs. It is suggested that the energy output (heat flow) varies with the pressure exerted by the top (elastic) lithosphere upon the underlying mantle. A compensation tends to be established between the inner flow and tectonic stress, as the latter brings about pressure variations through uplift-subsidence couples. These may therefore be related to the generation of paired metamorphic belts. The evolution from island arcs to completed folded ranges is briefly described, with special attention being paid to ophiolitic and crystalline basement nappes, as well as to strike-slip faults, which are the final expression of lateral relative movements.  相似文献

The threshold between geochemical background and anomalies can be influenced by the methodology selected for its estimation. Environmental evaluations, particularly those conducted in mineralized areas, must consider this when trying to determinate the natural geochemical status of a study area, quantifying human impacts, or establishing soil restoration values for contaminated sites. Some methods in environmental geochemistry incorporate the premise that anomalies (natural or anthropogenic) and background data are characterized by their own probabilistic distributions. One of these methods uses exploratory data analysis (EDA) on regional geochemical data sets coupled with a geographic information system (GIS) to spatially understand the processes that influence the geochemical landscape in a technique that can be called a spatial data analysis (SDA). This EDA–SDA methodology was used to establish the regional background range from the area of Catorce–Matehuala in north-central Mexico. Probability plots of the data, particularly for those areas affected by human activities, show that the regional geochemical background population is composed of smaller subpopulations associated with factors such as soil type and parent material. This paper demonstrates that the EDA–SDA method offers more certainty in defining thresholds between geochemical background and anomaly than a numeric technique, making it a useful tool for regional geochemical landscape analysis and environmental geochemistry studies.  相似文献

A plausible seismo-tectonic boundary of the Sinkiang—Tibetan region is defined on the basis of the trend of higher magnitude earthquakes (M7.0) and energy released by them for the period 1905–1965. In order to study the nature of forces at the northwestern and eastern sides of the region focal mechanisms for eleven shocks have been determined using P-wave first-motion directions reported in the Bulletin of the International Seismological Centre (Edinburgh). Of these, seven mechanisms show thrust faulting, three strike-slip and one normal faulting. The sense of motions of underthrusting blocks in thrust-faulting mechanisms for the two sides are directed towards the Sinkiang—Tibetan region. The slip vectors of strike-slip faulting are also in agreement with the direction of movement of thrust faulting. Thus, the seismicity, energy released, slip vectors and the orientation of T-axes reflect that the northwestern and eastern sides of the Sinkiang—Tibetan region are the plausible seismo-tectonic boundary and the major earthquakes and higher crustal thickness are the results of the movements of surrounding plates towards the region.  相似文献

As both Middle-European and Mediterranean country, the Republic of Croatia is composed of several regional units. Every single natural and geographical unit is not specific only in terms of its general natural features, but also by its role in linking Croatia with the rest of the world. Additional peculiarity of these geographic units is their complementary value, which gives good prerequisites for successful economic development of the country. In Pannonian section of Croatia prevail natural features close to those in other Central-European countries. Namely, this section of Croatia participates in Danube catchment area, linking Croatia with the rest of Central Europe. Dinaric Alps are typical mountainous area; in north-western part of the range (i.e. in the region of Gorski Kotar) they are very narrow, making thus possible a comparatively easy communication between Pannonian part of Croatia and the Adriatic coast. Coastal region of Croatia — stretching along the most of (north)eastern coast of the Adriatic — is predominantly characterised by Mediterranean natural features. Due to its size and share in total area of the country, territorial waters of the Adriatic sea can be accepted as the fourth natural and geographic unit of Croatia.  相似文献

Tectonics and surface effects of the supercontinent Columbia   总被引:10,自引:2,他引:8
Assembly of the supercontinent Columbia at about 1.85–1.90 Ga coincided with several events that affected the entire earth. The oldest worldwide network of orogenic belts formed at the same time. Although some granite–granodiorite (GG) suites had formed earlier, the GG suites became common in the 1.8–1.9 Ga orogenic belts. These suites succeeded the older tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) suites, which were not produced after 1.8 Ga. Changes on the earth's surface at 1.8–1.9 Ga include rapid increase in the concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere and oceans and probably the evolution of eukaryotes. All of these surface changes occurred as Columbia accreted, and the assembly of Columbia may have contributed to the drastic changes in the earth's surface environment as well as to the evolution of primitive life forms.  相似文献

This essay provides analyses of labor strikes at two early sites (first quarter of the 20th century) of the global production line – Singer Manufacturing Company’s factories at Clydebank, Scotland and Podolsk, Russia – and the labor management strategies that led to and resulted from these particular enactments of power. I focus on the degree to which Singer and its employees were embedded in local, regional and national contexts, and how and why workers’ agency mattered to the course of early globalization. I also suggest that such analyses provide significant understanding of how and why early global production was both different from and similar to contemporary globalization. By so doing, this analysis contributes to theoretical discussions concerning degrees of territorial embeddedness of transnational corporations, particularly in regard to changes over time as well as geographic scale, and adds historical nuance to theoretical questions concerning labor geographies under conditions of globalization.  相似文献
