The problem of radar sounding of the Martian soil from an orbiting spacecraft is analyzed. The influence of the ionosphere on the results of remote sounding is revealed through the results of numerical modeling and actual subsurface soil sounding experiments carried out using the MARSIS radar sounder aboard the Mars-Express spacecraft. A method of correction of the dispersion distortion is proposed and tested through radiolocation of the polar cap on Mars.  相似文献

A new spectral-frequency method (SFM) for the study of solid body surfaces is briefly described. This method allows estimation of the sizes of various spots. Estimates for the sizes of spots on asteroid surfaces made by the SFM and other methods are compared and discussed. The sizes of spots on the surface of asteroid 1620 Geographos determined by the SFM are well consistent with those of the craters obtained from radar data. The sizes of hydrosilicate spots on the surface of asteroid 21 Lutetia found by the SFM agree with those of the craters determined by the Rosetta spacecraft. The size of a blue spot on the surface of asteroid 4 Vesta found by the SFM is consistent with the size of the well-known crater on the south pole of the asteroid. It is inferred that the SFM is a promising method for the estimation of the sizes of spots on asteroid surfaces.  相似文献

Mars Express spacecraft inserted successfully Martian orbit at the end of 2003. On board this probe, a radar instrument called MARSIS (for Mars Advanced Radar for Surface and Ionosphere Sounding) is looking for water inside the first kilometers of Martian crust. To support MARSIS planning and data inversion, Laboratoire de Planétologie de Grenoble developed a MARSIS signal simulator. We show in this paper that MARSIS can also characterize some surface features, in addition to subsurface water and ionosphere sounding. We study a Martian surface region of special interest: Nilokeras Mensae, inside Acidalia Planitia. We discuss the previous geological studies of this region, and show the geomorphologies analyze of this surface area could lead to a simple terrain model. Then, we present a possible data inversion scheme and applying the MARSIS simulator, we test a first radar data inversion. Finally, we will show that complete dielectric characteristics of surface top layers can be retrieved, at least as often Mars Express flies over some layered terrain (at wavelength scale).  相似文献

Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS) is a subsurface and topside ionosphere radar sounder aboard the European Space Agency spacecraft Mars Express, in orbit at Mars since 25 December 2003, and in operation since 17 June 2005. The ionospheric sounding mode of MARSIS is capable of detecting the reflection of the sounding wave from the martian surface. This ability has been used in previous work to show that the surface reflection is absorbed and disappears during periods when high fluxes of energetic particles are incident on the ionosphere of Mars. These absorption events are believed to be the result of increased collisional damping of the sounding wave, caused by increased electron density below the spacecraft, in turn caused by impact ionization from the impinging particles. In this work we identify two absorption events that were isolated during periods when the surface reflection is consistently visible and when Mars is nearly at opposition. The visibility of the surface reflection is viewed in conjunction with particle and photon measurements taken at both Mars and Earth. Both absorption events are found to coincide with Earth passing through solar wind speed and ion flux signatures indicative of a corotating interaction region (CIR). The two events are separated by an interval of approximately 27 days, corresponding to one solar rotation. The first of the two events coincides with abruptly enhanced particle fluxes seen in situ at Mars. Simultaneous with the particle enhancement there are an abrupt decrease in the intensity of electron oscillations, typically seen by the Mars Express particle instrument ASPERA-3 between the magnetic pileup boundary and the martian bow shock, and a sharp drop in the solar wind pressure, seen in the proxy quantity based on MGS magnetometer observations. The decrease in oscillation intensity is therefore the probable effect of a relaxation of the martian bow shock. The second absorption event does not show a particle enhancement and complete ASPERA-3 data during that time are unavailable. Other absorption events are the apparent result of solar X-ray and XUV enhancements. We conclude that surface reflection absorption events are sometimes caused by enhanced ionospheric ionization from high energy particles accelerated by the shocks associated with a CIR. A full statistical analysis of CIRs in relation to observed absorption events in conjunction with a quantitative analysis of the deposition of ionization during space weather events is needed for a complete understanding of this phenomenon. If such analyses can be carried out, radar sensing of the martian ionosphere might be useful as a space weather probe.  相似文献

The reprocessing of the archive data of the television experiment performed by the Venera-13 spacecraft in 1982 on the surface of the planet allowed an image of the nearby crater 1.5 km across to be obtained in detail. Its structural features apparently indicate its volcanic origin. All of the earlier acquired analogous images of such formations were composed only from the orbital radar data and correspond to the sizes of tens of kilometers.  相似文献

A method and an algorithm for determining the coordinates of points on the planetary surface are described. The coordinates are determined using photographs. To solve the problem, the spacecraft coordinates need to be determined at five trajectory points. The spacecraft trajectory is considered to be a plane. The method is applicable for determining the coordinates of points on the Earth’s surface and on the surface of other planets.  相似文献

Until the ULYSSES spacecraft reached high latitude, the only means for measuring the solar wind velocity in the polar regions was from radio scattering observations (IPS), and these remain the only way to measure the velocity near the sun. However, IPS, like many remote sensing observations, is a line-of-sight integrated measurement. This integration is particularly troublesome when the line-of-sight passes through a fast stream but that stream does not occupy the entire scattering region. Observations from the HELIOS spacecraft have shown that the solar wind has a bimodal character which becomes more pronounced near the sun. Recent observations from ULYSSES have confirmed that this structure is clear at high latitudes even at relatively large solar distances. We have developed a method of separating the fast and slow contributions to an IPS observation which takes advantage of this bimodal structure. In this paper I will describe the technique and its application to IPS observations made using the receiving antennas of the EISCAT incoherent backscatter radar observatory in northern Scandinavia.  相似文献

To a significant degree, the success of spacecraft missions to comets and asteroids depends upon the accuracy of the target body ephemerides. In turn, accurate ephemerides depend upon the quality of the astrometric data set used in determining the object's orbit and the accuracy with which the target body's motion can be modelled. Using error analyses studies of the target bodies for the NEAR, Muses-C, Clementine 2, Stardust, and Rosetta missions, conclusions are drawn as to how to minimize target body position uncertainties at the times of encounter, In general, these uncertainties will be minimized when the object has a good number of optical observations spread over several orbital periods. If a target body lacks a lengthy data interval, its ephemeris uncertainties can be dramatically reduced with the use of radar Doppler and delay data taken when the body is relatively close to the Earth. The combination of radar and optical angle data taken at close Earth distances just before a spacecraft encounter can result in surprisingly small target body ephemeris uncertainties.  相似文献

Because radarclinometry is fundamentally describable in terms of a nonlinear, first-order, partial differential equation, one expects that it can, in principle, be carried out by direct deterministic integration beginning at a given threshold profile along the azimuthal coordinate. Such a boundary condition could be provided by the altimetry profile obtained on a preceding or succeeding orbital revolution of the radar-bearing spacecraft. Notwithstanding the mismatched resolutions of the radar altimeter and the radar imaging system as planned for the Megallan mission to Venus, there are fundamental considerations, not involving system noise, that influence the possibility of success of this approach. From the topographic map of the Lake Champlain West quadrangle in the Adirondack Mountains of the U.S., a radar image is synthesized. Radarclinometry, in surface integral form, recaptures the topographic map when the applicable radar reflectance function is weakly variable over the range of application, but it diverges beyond a certain point for nominally variable reflectance functions. The effect can be understood by using results from the shape-from-shading literature. (This literature is produced by a group within the artificial intelligence community who have been independently attacking, for all practical purposes, photoclinometry, except that they have not given primacy to images of terrain.) The ubiquity of the instability suggests that the value of the surface integral approach is much in doubt.  相似文献

This paper presents an analysis of an asteroid deflection method based on multiple solar concentrators. A model of the deflection through the sublimation of the surface material of an asteroid is presented, with simulation results showing the achievable impact parameter with, and without, accounting for the effects of mirror contamination due to the ejected debris plume. A second model with simulation results is presented analyzing an enhancement of the Yarkovsky effect, which provides a significant deflection even when the surface temperature is not high enough to sublimate. Finally the dynamical model of solar concentrators in the proximity of an irregular celestial body are discussed, together with a Lyapunov-based controller to maintain the spacecraft concentrators at a required distance from the asteroid.  相似文献

The images of the western part of Olympus Mons and adjacent plains acquired by the HRSC camera onboard the Mars Express spacecraft were studied. The morphology, topography, and color of the surface were investigated. The surface age was determined by the frequencies of impact craters. The examination of the HRSC images combined with an analysis of the MOC imagery and MOLA altitude profiles have shown that the Olympus Mons edifice, at least in its western part, is composed of not only lavas but also of sedimentary and volcanic-sedimentary rocks consisting of dust, volcanic ash, and, probably, H2O ice that precipitated from the atmosphere. These data also indicate that glaciations, traces of which are known on the western foot of Olympus Mons (Lucchitta, 1981; Milkovich and Head, 2003), probably also covered the gentle upper slopes of the mountain. It is probable that the ice is still there, protected from sublimation by a dust blanket. Confirming (or rejecting) its presence is a challenge for the scheduled radar sounding with the MARSIS instrument mounted on the Mars Express spacecraft as well.__________Translated from Astronomicheskii Vestnik, Vol. 39, No. 2, 2005, pp. 99–116.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Basilevsky, Neukum, Ivanov, Werner, S. van Gesselt, Head, Denk, Jaumann, Hoffmann, Hauber, McCord, the HRSC Co-Investigator Team.  相似文献

The Suprathermal Plasma Analysers on GEOS-2 are able to make differential energy measurements of plasma particles down to sub-eV energies because the entire sensor package can be biased relative to the spacecraft. When the package is biased negatively with respect to space potential, low energy positive ions are sucked in and are more easily detected against the background. Large fluxes of ions with temperatures of the order of 1 eV or less were consistently detected at space potential when the spacecraft was in the magnetosheath though not when it was in the nearby magnetosphere. This apparent geophysical correlation, suggesting that the ions were part of the magnetosheath ion population, was contradicted by the fact that the ions showed no signs of the large drift velocity associated with the electric field in the magnetosheath. We conclude, after further investigation, that the observed ions were probably sputtered as neutrals from the spacecraft surface by the impact of solar wind ions and subsequently ionized by sunlight or electron impact. The effect of sputtering by solar wind ions has not been previously observed, although it could have consequences for the long-term stability of spacecraft surfaces.  相似文献

Abstract— We observed 25143 Itokawa, the target of Japan's Hayabusa (MUSES‐C) sample‐return mission, during its 2001 close approach at Arecibo on twelve dates during March 18‐April 9 and at Goldstone on nine dates during March 20‐April 2. We obtained delay‐Doppler images with range resolutions of 100 ns (15 m) at Arecibo and 125 ns (19 m) at Goldstone. Itokawa's average circular polarization ratio at 13 cm, 0.26 ± 0.04, is comparable to that of Eros, so its cm‐to‐m surface roughness probably is comparable to that on Eros. Itokawa's radar reflectivity and polarization properties indicate a near‐surface bulk density within 20% of 2.5 g cm?3. We present a preliminary estimate of Itokawa's shape, reconstructed from images with rather limited rotation‐phase coverage, using the method of Hudson (1993) and assuming the lightcurve‐derived spin period (12.132 hr) and pole direction (ecliptic long., lat. = 355°, ?84°) of Kaasalainen et al. (2003). The model can be described as a slightly asymmetrical, slightly flattened ellipsoid with extents along its principal axes of 548 times 312 times 276 m ± 10%. Itokawa's topography is very subdued compared to that of other asteroids for which spacecraft images or radar reconstructions are available. Similarly, gravitational slopes on our Itokawa model average only 9° and everywhere are less than 27°. The radar‐refined orbit allows accurate identification of Itokawa's close planetary approaches through 2170. If radar ranging planned for Itokawa's 2004 apparition succeeds, then tracking of Hayabusa during its 2005 rendezvous should reveal Yarkovsky perturbation of the asteroid's orbit.  相似文献

Abstract— Radar data enable us to estimate an asteroid's near‐surface bulk density, thus providing a joint constraint on near‐surface porosity and solid density. We investigate two different approaches to simplifying this joint constraint: estimating solid densities by assuming uniform porosities for all asteroids; and estimating porosities by assuming uniform mineralogy within each taxonomic class. Methods used to estimate asteroids' near‐surface solid densities from radar data have not previously been calibrated via independent estimates. Recent spacecraft results on the chondritic nature of 433 Eros now permit such a check, and also support porosity estimation for S‐class objects. We use radar albedos and polarization ratios estimated for 36 main‐belt asteroids and nine near‐Earth asteroids to estimate near‐surface solid densities using two methods, one of which is similar to the uncalibrated algorithms used in previous studies, the other of which treats Eros as a calibrator. We also derive porosities for the same sample by assigning solid densities for each taxonomic class in advance. Density‐estimation results obtained for Eros itself are consistent with the uncalibrated method being valid in the mean; those derived for the full sample imply that uncalibrated solid densities are, at most, a few tens of percent too large on average. However, some derived densities are extremely low, whereas most porosity estimates are physically plausible. We discuss the relative merits of these two approaches.  相似文献

We took electronic photographs of Mercury on the side of the planet that was not photographed from the Mariner-10 spacecraft in 1973–1975 by the millisecond-exposure method in ground-based observations. Based on these photographs, we synthesized resolved images of the surface of unknown regions of the planet. The capabilities of the method are limited by the small angular size of the planetary disk (only 7.3 arcsec at average quadrature), specific difficulties of Mercury’s ground-based observations, their very limited duration, and the laboriousness of the subsequent computer-aided observational data processing. The millisecond-exposure method is complex, but a sufficient number of primary electronic photographs can be taken under good seeing conditions for the subsequent synthesis of Mercurian images with a resolution of no worse than the diffraction limit. A giant basin about 2000 km in diameter and other large structures are distinguished in the synthesized images of the planet. In the regions where radar data are available, these structures can be identified with previously found ones. In some measure, the synthesized images allow the relief of the longitude sector 210°–290° W to be reconstructed on Mercury. It can be asserted with caution that the large relief features are distributed asymmetrically over the surface of Mercury, much as observed on other terrestrial planets, the Moon, and many satellites of giant planets.  相似文献

Doppler tracking data from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) have been used to estimate the anomalous gravity field in the region of Venus west of Beta Regio. The analysis invokes a Kalman filter-smoother to solve the nonlinear spacecraft state estimation problem and a linear Bayesian estimator to perform the geophysical inversion. The topographic map for this region, derived from the PVO radar, has been filtered to have the same distortions and degree of smoothing as the gravity map. The undulations of the gravity are about 0.2 times as large as expected from the topography on the assumption that the latter is uncompensated. A comparison of the gravity and topography by means of the spectral admittance is consistent with Airy compensation at a depth of 50 km if the surface material has a density of 2.6 g/cm3. However, this is not a unique interpretation.  相似文献

A variant to implement a spacecraft (SC) spatial attitude system with respect to the Sun is discussed. The sunward direction and the solar rotation axis are used as reference points. The system is based on measuring spectral line Doppler shift by scanning the solar image along the limb and is self-adjusting for relative spectral line shifts and instrument band shifts. The first harmonic of the signal serves as a basis for accurate adjustment of filter band. The second harmonic phase is used to measure the spacecraft attitude. The application of this method holds the greatest promise when the SO is stabilized by the sunward spinning because this ensures continuous monitoring of the spacecraft attitude. In addition, the method provides information on the precise coordinates of solar surface details during space-borne observations.  相似文献

Radar images of Venus' surface, obtained from the Venera 15 and 16 spacecraft and from the Earth, show many impact craters that are radar bright compared with their surroundings. It is demonstrated in this report that this phenomenon cannot be caused by higher surface roughness of meteorite impact area only. Obviously, enhanced reflectivity is required as well. It is supposed that the necessary enlargement of reflectivity might be caused by raised conductivity of surface material in the impact area, if the meteorite is related by chemical composition to iron or iron-stony types.'Geology and Tectonics of Venus', special issue edited by Alexander T. Basilevsky (USSR Acad. of Sci., Moscow), James W. Head (Brown University, Providence), Gordon H. Pettengill (MIT. Cambridge, Massachusetts) and R. S. Saunders (J.P.L., Pasadena).  相似文献
