From prints of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey the widths of the equatorial dust layers of a sample of 39 galaxies seen on edge are obtained to be in the range 500 ≤ D ≤ 1600 pc. The width of a dust layer seems to be correlated with the luminosity of the galaxy. The dust lanes of field galaxies are obviously broader than those of the members of the Virgo cluster. This result may be interpreted as a dust deficiency caused by stripping of interstellar matter resulting from galactic collisions and interaction of the galaxies with the intracluster medium.  相似文献

We apply discriminant analysis to 1023 active regions and their subsurface-flow parameters, such as vorticity and kinetic helicity density, with the goal of distinguishing between flaring and non-flaring active regions. We derive synoptic subsurface flows by analyzing GONG high-resolution Doppler data with ring-diagram analysis. We include magnetic-flux values in the discriminant analysis derived from NSO Kitt Peak and SOLIS synoptic maps binned to the same spatial scale as the helioseismic analysis. For each active region, we determine the flare information from GOES and include all flares within 60° central meridian distance to match the coverage of the ring-diagram analysis. The subsurface-flow characteristics improve the ability to distinguish between flaring and non-flaring active regions. For the C- and M-class flare category, the most important subsurface parameter is the so-called structure vorticity, which estimates the horizontal gradient of the horizontal-vorticity components. The no-event skill score, which measures the improvement over predicting that no events occur, reaches 0.48 for C-class flares and 0.32 for M-class flares, when the structure vorticity at three depths combined with total magnetic flux are used. The contributions come mainly from shallow layers within about 2 Mm of the surface and layers deeper than about 7 Mm.  相似文献

In an attempt to produce a simple representation of an interface dynamo, I examine a dynamo model composed of two one-dimensional (radially averaged) pseudo-spherical layers, one in the convection zone and possessing an α-effect, and the other in the tachocline and possessing an ω-effect. The two layers communicate by means of an analogue of Newton's law of cooling, and a dynamical back-reaction of the magnetic field on ω is provided. Extensive bifurcation diagrams are calculated for three separate values of η, the ratio of magnetic diffusivities of the two layers. I find recognizable similarities to, but also dramatic differences from, the comparable one-layer model examined by Roald &38; Thomas. In particular, the solar-like dynamo mode found previously is no longer stable in the two-layer version; in its place there is a sequence of periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic modes probably created in a homoclinic bifurcation. These differences are important enough to provide support for the view that the solar dynamo cannot be meaningfully modelled in one dimension.  相似文献

The masses of quasi-stellar objects having absorption lines with redshifts larger than the redshifts of the corresponding emission lines are attributed to gas clouds which are moving radially against the quasar. Other forces than the gravitational attraction of the quasars are neglected. The average of the mass of a quasi-stellar object is 5 ⋅ 1012 𝔐 ⊙.  相似文献

Abstract— Libyan Desert Glass (LDG) is an enigmatic type of glass that occurs in western Egypt in the Libyan Desert. Fairly convincing evidence exists to show that it formed by impact, although the source crater is currently unknown. Some rare samples present dark‐colored streaks with variable amounts of Fe, and they are supposed to contain a meteoritic component. We have studied the iron local environment in an LDG sample by means of Fe K‐edge highresolution X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy to obtain quantitative data on the Fe oxidation state and coordination number in both the Fe‐poor matrix and Fe‐rich layers. The pre‐edge peak of the high‐resolution XANES spectra of the sample studied displays small but reproducible variations between Fe‐poor matrix and Fe‐rich layers, which is indicative of significant changes in the Fe oxidation state and coordination number. Comparison with previously obtained data for a very low‐Fe sample shows that, while iron is virtually all trivalent and in tetrahedral coordination ([4]Fe3+) in the low‐Fe sample, the sample containing the Fe‐rich layers display a mixture of tetra‐coordinated trivalent iron ([4]Fe3+) and penta‐coordinated divalent iron ([5]Fe2+), with the Fe in the Fe‐rich layer being more reduced than the matrix. From these data, we conclude the following: a) the significant differences in the Fe oxidation state between LDG and tektites, together with the wide intra‐sample variations in the Fe‐oxidation state, confirm that LDG is an impact glass and not a tektite‐like glass; b) the higher Fe content, coupled with the more reduced state of the Fe, in the Fe‐rich layers suggests that some or most of the Fe in these layers may be directly derived from the meteoritic projectile and that it is not of terrestrial origin.  相似文献

We consider the hypothesis that the layering observed on the surface of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 from the Deep Impact spacecraft and identified on other comet nuclei imaged by spacecraft (i.e., 19P/Borrelly and 81P/Wild 2) is ubiquitous on Jupiter family cometary nuclei and is an essential element of their internal structure. The observational characteristics of the layers on 9P/Tempel 1 are detailed and considered in the context of current theories of the accumulation and dynamical evolution of cometary nuclei. The works of Donn [Donn, B.D., 1990. Astron. Astrophys. 235, 441-446], Sirono and Greenberg [Sirono, S.-I., Greenberg, J.M., 2000. Icarus 145, 230-238] and the experiments of Wurm et al. [Wurm, G., Paraskov, G., Krauss, O., 2005. Icarus 178, 253-263] on the collision physics of porous aggregate bodies are used as basis for a conceptual model of the formation of layers. Our hypothesis is found to have implications for the place of origin of the JFCs and their subsequent dynamical history. Models of fragmentation and rubble pile building in the Kuiper belt in a period of collisional activity (e.g., [Kenyon, S.J., Luu, J.X., 1998. Astron. J. 115, 2136-2160; 1999a. Astron. J. 118, 1101-1119; 1999b. Astrophys. J. 526, 465-470; Farinella, P., Davis, D.R., Stern, S.A., 2000. In: Mannings, V., Boss, A.P., Russell, S.S. (Eds.), Protostars and Planets IV. Icarus 145, 220-229]) following the formation of Neptune appear to be in conflict with the observed properties of the layers and irreconcilable with the hypothesis. Long-term residence in the scattered disk [Duncan, M.J., Levison, H.F., 1997. Science 276, 1670-1672; Duncan, M., Levison, H., Dones, L., 2004. In: Festou, M., Keller, H.U., Weaver, H.A. (Eds.), Comets II. Univ. of Arizona Press, Tucson, pp. 193-204] and/or a change in fragmentation outcome modeling may explain the long-term persistence of primordial layers. In any event, the existence of layers places constraints on the environment seen by the population of objects from which the Jupiter family comets originated. If correct, our hypothesis implies that the nuclei of Jupiter family comets are primordial remnants of the early agglomeration phase and that the physical structure of their interiors, except for the possible effects of compositional phase changes, is largely as it was when they were formed. We propose a new model for the interiors of Jupiter family cometary nuclei, called the talps or “layered pile” model, in which the interior consists of a core overlain by a pile of randomly stacked layers. We discuss how several cometary characteristics—layers, surface texture, indications of flow, compositional inhomogeneity, low bulk density low strength, propensity to split, etc., might be explained in terms of this model. Finally, we make some observational predictions and suggest goals for future space observations of these objects.  相似文献

Abstract— 40Ar-39Ar age measurements were made for three whole rock melt samples produced during impact events which formed the Dellen, Jänisjärvi, and Sääksjärvi craters on the Baltic Shield. An age of 109.6 ± 1.0 Ma was obtained for the Dellen sample based on an age spectrum plateau. The age spectrum shows a small (7%) loss of radiogenic 40Ar from low temperature fractions. Ages of 698 ± 22 Ma and 560 ± 12 Ma were obtained from isochrons for the Jänisjärvi and Sääksjärvi samples, respectively. Data obtained by laser degassing support the Sääksjärvi result. The presence of excess 40Ar is indicated in lower temperature fractions for both samples and is correlated with K concentrations in the Sääksjärvi sample. Models explaining these results may require a change in the local “atmospheric” Ar isotopic composition as cooling of melt rocks proceeded. However, it cannot be excluded that devitrification and/or alteration changed the Ar budget. A crater production rate on the Baltic Shield based on measured ages of 6 craters is (0.3 ± 0.2) · 10?14 20-km-and-larger craters per km2 per year, in satisfactory agreement with previous estimates.  相似文献

In recent years there has been some progress towards detecting solar-like oscillations in stars. The goal of this challenging project is to analyse frequency spectra similar to that observed for the Sun in integrated light. In this context it is important to investigate what can be learned about the structure and evolution of the stars from such future observations. Here we concentrate on the structure of the upper layers, as reflected in the phase function. We show that it is possible to obtain this function from low-degree p modes, at least for stars on the main sequence. We analyse its dependence on several uncertainties in the structure of the uppermost layers. We also investigate a filtered phase function, which has properties that depend on the layers around the second helium ionization zone.  相似文献

The long-term series of geodetic-astronomical observations are an important data basis for geodynamic investigations, but the microclimatic influence on their results is an uncontested fact too. The local topography brings about thermal anomalies and thus it is the cause of the inclination of isopycenics and refraction disturbances. The measuring equipment is described for the temperature registration near the astrolabe DANJON at the observatory Potsdam. It is reported on quality and treatment of measuring dates and on design of the graphic temperature-model. In the 6-metre plane, horizontal temperature gradients were determined in the azimuth of all stars observed. They yield direct information about the thermally caused inclination of the layers of equal density in the differentially small region which is passed by the beam of light coming from the star. The correlation between these gradients and the geodetic-astronomical observations are detected. The corrections produced on the basis of the regression analysis are computed for significant correlations (about 30%). An improvement and extension of the temperature recorder is discussed with a view to a higher effect of this method.  相似文献

A homogeneous data‐base collating all uvbyβ photometry available at present for O‐B9 stars in the field of IC 2602 is presented. The characteristics of the field are studied. Four spatially coherent groups can be distinguished. A low reddened compact group located at 156 ± 6 pc is identi.ed with IC 2602, followed by background layers at 546 ± 33 pc, 1117 ± 61 pc, and possibly at 2626 ± 163 pc. The apparent depth of the first three layers is about 1 kpc, which is consistent with the thickness of a spiral arm. There is an indication for the existence of a region free of massive luminous stars between 1.2 and 2.6 kpc, which could be associated with interarm space between the Local Association and the distant spiral structures toward Carina. Fine scale layering of haze and composition in Titan’s stratosphere and mesosphere was investigated using visible/UV images from Cassini’s Imaging Science Sub-system (ISS) and IR spectra from Cassini’s Composite Infra-Red Spectrometer (CIRS). Both ISS and CIRS independently show fine layered structures in haze and composition, respectively, in the 150-450 km altitude range with a preferred vertical wavelength of around 50 km. Layers are most pronounced around the north polar winter vortex, although some weaker layers do exist at more southerly latitudes. The amplitude of composition layers in each trace gas profile is proportional to the relative enrichment of that species in the winter polar vortex compared to equatorial latitudes. As enrichment is caused by polar subsidence, this suggests a dynamical origin. We propose that the polar layers are caused by cross-latitude advection across the vortex boundary. This is analogous to processes that lead to ozone laminae formation around Earth’s polar vortices.  相似文献

Using data from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we reassess the methods by which layers within the north polar layered deposits (NPLD) can be delineated and their thicknesses measured. Apparent brightness and morphology alone are insufficient for this task; high resolution topographic data are necessary. From these analyses, we find that the visible appearance of layers depends to a large degree on the distribution of younger, mantling deposits (which in turn is partially influenced by inherent layer properties) and on the shape and location of the particular outcrop. This younger mantle partially obscures layer morphology and brightness and is likely a cause of the gradational contacts between individual layers at this scale. High resolution images reveal that there are several layers similar in appearance to the well-known marker bed discovered by Malin, M., Edgett, K., 2001. J. Geophys. Res. 106, 23429-23570. The morphology, thicknesses , and separation distances of these marker beds, as gleaned from a high resolution stereo digital elevation model, lend insight into the connection between stratigraphy and climate.  相似文献

The dynamics of space debris with very high A/m near the geostationary orbit is dominated by the gravitational coefficient C 22 and the solar radiation pressure. An analysis of the stability of the orbits by the chaos indicator MEGNO and frequency analysis map FAM shows chaotic layers around the separatrix and reveals a web of sub-structures associated to resonances with the annual period of the Sun. This succession of stable thin islands and chaotic layers can be reproduced and explained by a quite simple toy model, based on a pendulum approach, perturbed, through the eccentricity, by the external (Sun) frequency. The use of suitable action-angle variables in the circulation and libration regions of the pendulum allows to point out new resonances between the geostationary libration angle and the Sun’s longitude. They correspond very well (positions, shape, width) to the structures visible on the FAM representations.  相似文献

Archean spherule layers represent the only currently known remnants of the early impact record on Earth. Based on the lunar cratering record, the small number of spherule layers identified so far contrasts to the high impact flux that can be expected for the Earth at that time. The recent discovery of several Paleoarchean spherule layers in the BARB5 and CT3 drill cores from the Barberton area, South Africa, drastically increases the number of known Archean impact spherule layers and may provide a unique opportunity to improve our knowledge of the impact record on the early Earth. This study is focused on the spherule layers in the CT3 drill core from the northeastern Barberton Greenstone Belt. We present highly siderophile element (HSE: Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Ru, and Pd) concentrations and Re‐Os isotope signatures for spherule layer samples and their host rocks in order to unravel the potential presence of extraterrestrial fingerprints within them. Most spherule layer samples exhibit extreme enrichments in HSE concentrations of up to superchondritic abundances in conjunction with, in some cases, subchondritic present‐day 187Os/188Os isotope ratios. This indicates a significant meteoritic contribution to the spherule layers. In contrast to some of the data reported earlier for other Archean spherule layers from the Barberton area, the CT3 core is significantly overprinted by secondary events. However, HSE and Re‐Os isotope signatures presented in this study indicate chondritic admixtures of up to (and even above) 100% chondrite component in some of the analyzed spherule layers. There is no significant correlation between HSE abundances and respective spherule contents. Although strongly supporting the impact origin of these layers and the presence of significant meteoritic admixtures, peak HSE concentrations are difficult to explain without postdepositional enrichment processes.  相似文献

Meteorite impact on Phoebe leads to the ejection of materials which coming from deeper layers are different in color than the carbonized ones on the surface. Electrostatic double layers have been proposed as an acceleration mechanism in solar flares and other astrophysical objects. They have been extensively studied in the laboratory and by means of computer simulations. The theory of steady-state double layers implies several existence criteria, in particular the Bohm criteria, restricting the conditions under which double layers may form. In the present paper several already published theoretical models of different types of double layers are discussed. It is shown that the existence conditions often imply current-driven instabilities in the ambient plasma, at least for strong double layers, and it is argued that such conditions must be used with care when applied to real plasmas. Laboratory double layers, and by implication those arising in astrophysical plasmas often produce instabilities in the surrounding plasma and are generally time-dependent structures. Naturally occuring double layers should, therefore, be far more common than the restrictions deduced from idealised time-independent models would imply. In particular it is necessary to understand more fully the time-dependent behaviour of double layers. In the present paper the dynamics of weak double layers is discussed. Therefore if 10 regular functions gik(xl) are given (which the inequalities of LORENTZ -signature fulfil) then these gik define 10 functions Tik(xl) without singularities. But, the matter-tensor Tik must fulfil the two inequalities T ≥ 0, T ≥ 1/2 T only and therefore the EINSTEIN -equations with “phenomenological matter” mean the two inequalities R ≥ 0, R ≤ 0 which are incompatible with a permanently regular metric with LORENTZ -signature, generally.  相似文献

Keck near-infrared images of Neptune from UT 26 July 2007 show that the cloud feature typically observed within a few degrees of Neptune’s south pole had split into a pair of bright spots. A careful determination of disk center places the cloud centers at −89.07 ± 0.06° and −87.84 ± 0.06° planetocentric latitude. If modeled as optically thick, perfectly reflecting layers, we find the pair of features to be constrained to the troposphere, at pressures greater than 0.4 bar. By UT 28 July 2007, images with comparable resolution reveal only a single feature near the south pole. The changing morphology of these circumpolar clouds suggests they may form in a region of strong convection surrounding a neptunian south polar vortex.  相似文献

This paper investigates the physical state of the photosphere in the main phase of the two-ribbon solar flare on June 3, 1979. The derived models show that the photosphere was in a disturbed state for a long time during the main phase of the flare. In the models, the temperature in the upper photospheric layers is higher and that in the lower layers is lower than in the quiet-sun model atmosphere. During the flare, the heating extends to the lower photospheric layers, and the upper layers cool down. A comparison of the obtained models to those for the two-ribbon solar flare on October 7, 1979, shows that the height distributions of the temperature in the main phase of the flares are strongly different.  相似文献

The results from hourly measurements of the magnetic field strengths of several main spots in three selected spot groups within the years 1968/69 are given in graphs. The values of the field strength used in the graphs are mean values out of three spectrograms taken immediately one after another. The mean error of a mean value is ±85 Gauss. Besides a general tendency in the daily course of the field strength the graphs are showing rapid variations up to 500 Gauss within a few hours. In contrast to these variations which are probably real, the frequent short time variations indicated cannot be regarded as certain. In addition to the observations of the field strength the development of the spot groups is described, and informations on the flare-activity are given.  相似文献
