High-resolution studies of the Sun’s magnetic fields are needed for a better understanding of the fundamental processes responsible for solar variability. The generation of magnetic fields through dynamo processes, the amplification of fields through the interaction with plasma flows, and the destruction of fields are poorly understood. There is incomplete insight into physical mechanisms responsible for chromospheric and coronal structure and heating, causes of variations in the radiative output of the Sun, and mechanisms that trigger flares and coronal mass ejections. Progress in answering these critical questions requires study of the interaction of the magnetic field and convection with a resolution sufficient to observe scale fundamental to these processes. The planned 4 m aperture ATST will be a unique scientific tool, with excellent angular resolution, a large wavelength range, and low scattered light. With its integrated adaptive optics, the ATST will achieve a spatial resolution nearly 10 times better than any existing solar telescope. The ATST design and development phase began in 2001 and it is now ready to begin construction in 2009.  相似文献

Led by the National Solar Observatory, plans have been made to design and to develop the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST). The ATST will be a 4‐m general‐purpose solar telescope equipped with adaptive optics and versatile post‐focus instrumentation. Its main aim will be to achieve an angular resolution of 0.03 arcsec (20 km on the solar surface). The project and the telescope design are briefly described.  相似文献

Upcoming large solar telescopes will offer the possibility of unprecedented high resolution observations. However, during periods of non‐ideal seeing such measurements are impossible and alternative programs should be considered to best use the available observing time. We present a synoptic program, currently carried out at the Istituto Ricerche Solari Locarno (IRSOL), to monitor turbulent magnetic fields employing the differential Hanle effect in atomic and molecular lines. This program can be easily adapted for the use at large telescopes exploring new science goals, nowadays impossible to achieve with smaller telescopes. The current, interesting scientific results prove that such programs are worthwhile to be continued and expanded in the future. We calculate the approximately achievable spatial resolution at a large telescope like ATST for polarimetric measurements with a noise level below 5 × 10‐5 and a temporal resolution which is sufficient to explore variations on the granular scale. We show that it would be important to optimize the system for maximal photon throughput and to install a high‐speed camera system to be able to study turbulent magnetic fields with unprecedented accuracy (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The 1.5 m telescope GREGOR opens a new window to the understanding of solar small‐scale magnetism. The first light instrumentation includes the Gregor Fabry Pérot Interferometer (GFPI), a filter spectro‐polarimeter for the visible wavelength range, the GRating Infrared Spectro‐polarimeter (GRIS) and the Broad‐Band Imager (BBI). The excellent performance of the first two instruments has already been demonstrated at the Vacuum Tower Telescope. GREGOR is Europe’s largest solar telescope and number 3 in the world. Its all‐reflective Gregory design provides a large wavelength coverage from the near UV up to at least 5 microns. The field of view has a diameter of 150″. GREGOR is equipped with a high‐order adaptive optics system, with a subaperture size of 10 cm, and a deformable mirror with 256 actuators. The science goals are focused on, but not limited to, solar magnetism. GREGOR allows us to measure the emergence and disappearance of magnetic flux at the solar surface at spatial scales well below 100 km. Thanks to its spectro‐polarimetric capabilities, GREGOR will measure the interaction between the plasma flows, different kinds of waves, and the magnetic field. This will foster our understanding of the processes that heat the chromosphere and the outer layers of the solar atmosphere. Observations of the surface magnetic field at very small spatial scales will shed light on the variability of the solar brightness (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The changes in the Sun occurring at human time-scales can be pinned down to the presence of magnetic fields. These fields determine the structure of the outer solar atmosphere and, therefore, they are responsible for all the energetic part of the solar spectrum, including the UV. Our understanding of the magnetic fields existing at the base of the atmosphere has changed during the last years. The new spectro-polarimeters reveal an ubiquitous magnetic field, present even in the quiet regions. They are widespread and of complex topology, containing far more (unsigned) magnetic flux and magnetic energy that all traditional manifestations of solar activity. These so-called quiet Sun magnetic fields are the subject of the contribution. I summarize their main observational properties, as well as the models put forward to explain them. According to the common wisdom, they may be generated by a turbulent dynamo driven by convective motions. Their true physical role is not understood yet, but it may be consequential both for the Sun (e.g., in determining the structure of the quiet corona), and for other astronomical objects (e.g., if a turbulent dynamo operates in the Sun, the same mechanism provides a very efficient mean of creating surface magnetic fields in all stars with convective envelopes). I discuss the impact of the quiet Sun fields on the transition region and corona, trying to point out the UV signatures of those fields.  相似文献

We review methods to measure magnetic fields within the corona using the polarized light in magnetic-dipole (M1) lines. We are particularly interested in both the global magnetic-field evolution over a solar cycle, and the local storage of magnetic free energy within coronal plasmas. We address commonly held skepticisms concerning angular ambiguities and line-of-sight confusion. We argue that ambiguities are, in principle, no worse than more familiar remotely sensed photospheric vector fields, and that the diagnosis of M1 line data would benefit from simultaneous observations of EUV lines. Based on calculations and data from eclipses, we discuss the most promising lines and different approaches that might be used. We point to the S-like [Fe xi] line (J=2 to J=1) at 789.2 nm as a prime target line (for the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) for example) to augment the hotter 1074.7 and 1079.8 nm Si-like lines of [Fe xiii] currently observed by the Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (CoMP). Significant breakthroughs will be made possible with the new generation of coronagraphs, in three distinct ways: i) through single-point inversions (which encompasses also the analysis of MHD wave modes), ii) using direct comparisons of synthetic MHD or force-free models with polarization data, and iii) using tomographic techniques.  相似文献

The solar dynamo
The solar dynamo continues to pose a challenge to observers and theoreticians. Observations of the solar surface reveal a magnetic field with a complex, hierarchical structure consisting of widely different scales. Systematic features such as the solar cycle, the butterfly diagram, and Hale's polarity laws point to the existence of a deep-rooted large-scale magnetic field. At the other end of the scale are magnetic elements and small-scale mixed-polarity magnetic fields. In order to explain these phenomena, dynamo theory provides all the necessary ingredients including the effect, magnetic field amplification by differential rotation, magnetic pumping, turbulent diffusion, magnetic buoyancy, flux storage, stochastic variations and nonlinear dynamics. Due to advances in helioseismology, observations of stellar magnetic fields and computer capabilities, significant progress has been made in our understanding of these and other aspects such as the role of the tachocline, convective plumes and magnetic helicity conservation. However, remaining uncertainties about the nature of the deep-seated toroidal magnetic field and the effect, and the forbidding range of length scales of the magnetic field and the flow have thus far prevented the formulation of a coherent model for the solar dynamo. A preliminary evaluation of the various dynamo models that have been proposed seems to favor a buoyancy-driven or distributed scenario. The viewpoint proposed here is that progress in understanding the solar dynamo and explaining the observations can be achieved only through a combination of approaches including local numerical experiments and global mean-field modeling.Received: 5 May 2003, Published online: 15 July 2003  相似文献

For more than a decade there has been growing conviction that the burst of energy from a solar flare is first stored in magnetic fields and is then released rapidly by magnetic field annihilation (magnetic merging). There has also been recognition that magnetic merging may be responsible for the energy release manifested in auroral phenomena at the Earth. The most substantial evidence that magnetic merging does indeed occur in the Earth's magnetosphere and causes the auroral phenomena is provided by recent observations, in the magnetotail, of very rapid (500 km s–1) tailward, then earthward, flow of plasma during magnetospheric substorms. The observations, made with the Vela and IMP satellites, reveal also that the component of the tail magnetic field perpendicular to the tail neutral sheet changes polarity at the time of the reversal of plasma flow. These features are interpreted as indicative of passage of a magnetic neutral line, at which magnetic merging is proceeding, past the observing satellite. This paper describes an example of such observations made with IMP 6. It is anticipated that such systematic measurements of the plasma, energetic particles and magnetic field in the neighborhood of the passing neutral line on many such occasions will provide a general understanding of the magnetic merging process which can then be applied to studies of solar flares and other astrophysical phenomena.Work performed under the auspices of the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration.

We attempt to correlate all of the available solar-neutrino data with the strong magnetic fields these neutrinos encounter in the solar interior along their Earth-bound path. We approximate these fields using the photospheric, magnetograph-measured flux from central latitude bands, time delayed to proxy the magnetic fields in the solar interior. Our strongest evidence for anticorrelation is for magnetic fields within the central ±5° solar-latitude band that have been delayed by 0.85 ± 0.55 yr. Assuming a neutrino-magnetic interaction, this might indicate that interior fields travel to the solar surface in this period of time. As more solar-neutrino flux information is gathered, the question of whether this result arises from a physical process or is merely a statistical fluke should be resolved, providing that new data are obtained spanning additional solar cycles and that correlation studies focus on these same regions of the solar magnetic field.  相似文献

The investigation of the dynamics of magnetic fields from small scales to the large scales is very important for the understanding of the nature of solar activity. It is also the base for producing adequate models of the solar cycle with the purpose to predict the level of solar activity. Since December 1995 the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on board of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) provides full disk magnetograms and synoptic maps which cover the period of solar cycle 23 and the current minimum. In this paper, I review the following important topics with a focus on the dynamics of the solar magnetic field. The synoptic structure of the solar cycle; the birth of the solar cycle (overlapping cycles 23 and 24); the relationship of the photospheric magnetic activity and the EUV solar corona, polar magnetic fields and dynamo theory (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The differential rotation and sector structure of solar magnetic fields has been studied using digitized data on photospheric magnetic fields recorded at the Mount Wilson Observatory during the period August 1959–May 1970. The power spectra show considerable power in high-frequency peaks, corresponding to harmonic components with wavelengths less than 1/10 solar rotation. Calculations for a series of shorter time intervals show how the distribution of power over the various harmonic components in the sector pattern varies strongly with the solar cycle. The equatorial rotation rate of solar magnetic fields is about 0.1 km s-1 faster than that of the photospheric plasma determined from Doppler shifts. It is shown that the Doppler measurements mainly refer to the non-network regions. The differential flow of 0.1 km s-1 forms streamlines around the magnetic fine structures. The different rotation rates of various solar features can be explained in terms of the rotation rates of magnetic and non-magnetic regions. The rotation rates of the magnetic fields in active and quiet regions agree at the equator. At higher latitudes, however, the background fields deviate less from solid-body rotation, indicating that their source is below the deepest layers to which the sunspot magnetic fields penetrate. This suggests that turbulent diffusion of the field in old active regions may not be the main source for the background magnetic field, but that the source is located close to a rigidly rotating solar core with a synodic rotation period of 26.87 days.  相似文献

Today the Sun has a regular magnetic cycle driven by a dynamo action. But how did this regular cycle develop? How do basic parameters such as rotation rate, age, and differential rotation affect the generation of magnetic fields? Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) is a technique that uses high‐resolution observations in circularly polarised light to map the surface magnetic topology on stars. Utilising the spectropolarimetric capabilities of future large solar telescopes it will be possible to study the evolution and morphology of the magnetic fields on a range of Sun‐like stars from solar twins through to rapidly‐rotating active young Suns and thus study the solar magnetic dynamo through time. In this article I discuss recent results from ZDI of Sun‐like stars and how we can use night‐time observations from future solar telescopes to solve unanswered questions about the origin and evolution of the Sun's magnetic dynamo (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The Hanle effect has been extensively used for the determination of the magnetic field strength and direction in solar prominences. Here we address the problem of the diagnostics of weak magnetic fields in the solar photosphere and chromosphere by means of their Hanle effect in some selected absorption lines. As this is a relatively new area we will focus on the diagnostic methods and summarize some results that relate to the presence of a weak, turbulent magnetic field in the photosphere and to the chromospheric magnetic canopy. Finally we will outline some directions for future work.  相似文献

In an earlier paper by Raju, Srikanth, and Singh (1998), the average size of chromospheric network cells has been shown to have a dependence on the solar latitude. This was presumed to be due to the reduction of supergranular length-scales by network magnetic field enhancements. It has been found that the network brightness enhancements over solar latitude support this finding. Significant negative correlations have been found between the average cell size and the network brightness enhancements. Since the brightness enhancements are essentially due to the magnetic field concentrations, it is suggested that the network magnetic fields reduce the network cell sizes. We have also obtained the variations of skewness of network brightness distributions over solar latitude, which follow the network field variations. This complements the findings of Caccin et al. (1998) that skewness of brightness distribution follows the solar cycle. The findings suggest that the dependence of supergranular sizes, network brightness, and skewness of network brightness distribution on solar latitude or on the phase of the solar cycle is due to the associated variation of network magnetic fields.  相似文献

Anomalies in the solar magnetic fields of various scales are studied. The polar magnetic field strength is shown to have decreased steadily during the last three solar cycles. This is because the increase in the dipole magnetic moment observed from 1915 to 1976 has changed into a decrease in the last three cycles. At the same time, the medium scale magnetic fields (like those of isolated coronal holes) have been unusually strong in the last cycle. As a result, the tilt of the heliospheric current sheet is still about 30°. The large effective contribution from the medium scale fields to the total energy of the large-scale fields is also confirmed by our calculations of the effective multipolarity index. The aa-index at the cycle minima is correlated with the height of the succeeding maxima. The set of data considered may be indicative of the possible approach of a sequence of low solar cycles.  相似文献

One of the fundamental questions in solar physics is how the solar corona maintains its high temperature of several million Kelvin above photosphere with a temperature of 6000 K. Observations show that solar coronal heating problem is highly complex with many different facts. It is likely that different heating mechanisms are at work in the solar corona. The separate kinds of coronal loops may also be heated by different mechanisms. Using data from instruments onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and from the more recent Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) scientists have identified small regions of mixed polarity, termed magnetic carpet contributing to solar activity on a short time scale. Magnetic loops of all sizes rise into the solar corona, arising from regions of opposite magnetic polarity in the photosphere. Energy released when oppositely directed magnetic fields meet in the corona is one likely cause for coronal heating. There is enough energy coming up from the loops of the “magnetic carpet” to heat the corona to its known temperature.  相似文献
