We have obtained the spectrum of a middle-aged PSR B0656+14 in the 4300–9000 Å range with the ESO/VLT/FORS2. Preliminary results show that at 4600–7000 Å the spectrum is almost featureless and flat with a spectral index α ν ??0.2 that undergoes a change to a positive value at longer wavelengths. Combining with available multiwavelength data suggests two wide, red and blue, flux depressions whose frequency ratio is about 2 and which could be the 1st and 2nd harmonics of electron/positron cyclotron absorption formed at magnetic fields ~108 G in upper magnetosphere of the pulsar. 相似文献

PSR J1833−1034 and its associated pulsar wind nebula (PWN) have been investigated in depth through X-ray observations ranging from 0.1 to 200 keV. The low-energy X-ray data from Chandra reveal a complex morphology that is characterized by a bright central plerion, no thermal shell and an extended diffuse halo. The spectral emission from the central plerion softens with radial distance from the pulsar, with the spectral index ranging from Γ= 1.61 in the central region to Γ= 2.36 at the edge of the PWN. At higher energy, INTEGRAL detected the source in the 17–200 keV range. The data analysis clearly shows that the main contribution to the spectral emission in the hard X-ray energy range is originated from the PWN, while the pulsar is dominant above 200 keV. Recent High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) observations in the high-energy gamma-ray domain show that PSR J1833−1034 is a bright TeV emitter, with a flux corresponding to ∼2 per cent of the Crab in 1–10 TeV range. In addition, the spectral shape in the TeV energy region matches well with that in the hard X-rays observed by INTEGRAL . Based on these findings, we conclude that the emission from the pulsar and its associated PWN can be described in a scenario where hard X-rays are produced through synchrotron light of electrons with Lorentz factor γ∼ 109 in a magnetic field of ∼10 μG. In this hypothesis, the TeV emission is due to inverse-Compton interaction of the cooled electrons off the cosmic microwave background photons. Search for PSR J1833−1034 X-ray pulsed emission, via RXTE and Swift X-ray observations, resulted in an upper limit that is about 50 per cent. 相似文献

We explore the detailed polarization behaviour of pulsar 0823 + 26 using the technique of constructing partial ‘mode-separated’
profiles corresponding to the primary and secondary polarization modes. The characteristics of the two polarization modes
in this pulsar are particularly interesting, both because they are anything but orthogonal and because the secondary mode
exhibits a structure seen neither in the primary mode nor in the total profile. The new leading and trailing features in the
secondary mode, which appear to represent a conal component pair, are interpreted geometrically on the basis of their width
and the associated polarization-angle traverse as an outer cone.
If the secondary-mode features are, indeed, an outer cone, then questions about the significance of the pulsar’s postcursor
component become more pressing. It seems that 0823 + 26 has a very nearly equatorial geometry, in that both magnetic poles
and the sightline all fall close to the rotational equator of the star. We thus associate the postcursor component with emission
along those bundles of field lines which are also equatorial and which continue to have a tangent in the direction of our
sight line for a significant portion of the star’s rotation cycle. It seems that in all pulsars with postcursor components,
this emission follows the core component, and all may thus have equatorial emission geometries. No pulsars with precursors
in this sense — including the Crab pulsar — are known.
The distribution of power between the primary and secondary modes is very similar at both 430 and 1400 MHz. Our analysis shows
that in this pulsar considerable depolarization must be occurring on time scales that are short compared to the time resolution
of our observations, which is here some 0.5–1.0 milliseconds. One of the most interesting features of the modeseparated partial
profiles is a phase offset between the primary and secondary modes. The secondary-mode ‘main pulse’ arrives some 1.5 ± 0.1‡
before the primary-mode one at 430 MHz and some 1.3 +0.1 ‡ at 21 cm. Given that the polar cap has an angular diameter of 3.36‡,
we consider whether this is a geometric effect or an effect of differential propagation of the two modes in the inner magnetosphere
of the pulsar. 相似文献

PSR B1259−63 is a 48-ms radio pulsar in a highly eccentric 3.4-yr orbit with a Be star SS 2883. Unpulsed γ-ray, X-ray and radio emission components are observed from the binary system. It is likely that the collision of the pulsar wind with the anisotropic wind of the Be star plays a crucial role in the generation of the observed non-thermal emission. The 2007 periastron passage was observed in unprecedented details with Suzaku , Swift , XMM–Newton and Chandra missions. We present here the results of this campaign and compare them with previous observations. With these data we are able, for the first time, to study the details of the spectral evolution of the source over a 2-month period of the passage of the pulsar close to the Be star. New data confirm the pre-periastron spectral hardening, with the photon index reaching a value smaller than 1.5, observed during a local flux minimum. If the observed X-ray emission is due to the inverse Compton (IC) losses of the 10-MeV electrons, then such a hard spectrum can be a result of Coulomb losses, or can be related to the existence of the low-energy cut-off in the electron spectrum. Alternatively, if the X-ray emission is a synchrotron emission of very high-energy electrons, the observed hard spectrum can be explained if the high-energy electrons are cooled by IC emission in Klein–Nishina regime. Unfortunately, the lack of simultaneous data in the TeV energy band prevents us from making a definite conclusion on the nature of the observed spectral hardening and, therefore, on the origin of the X-ray emission. 相似文献

Pulsar B1929+10 is remarkable on a number of grounds. Its narrow primary components exhibit virtually complete and highly
stable linear polarisation, which can be detected over most of its rotation cycle. Various workers have been lured by the
unprecedented range over which its linear polarisation angle can be determined, and more attempts have been made to model
its emission geometry than perhaps for any other pulsar. Paradoxically, there is compelling evidence to interpret the pulsar’s
emission geometryboth in terms of an aligned configuration whereby its observed radiation comes from a single magnetic-polar emission regionand in terms of a nearly orthogonal configuration in which we receive emission from regions near each of its two poles. Pulsar
1929+10 thus provides a fascinating context in which to probe the conflict between these lines of interpretation in an effort
to deepen our understanding of pulsar radio emission.
Least-squares fits to the polarisation-angle traverse fit poorly near the main pulse and interpulse and have an inflection
point far from the centre of the main pulse. This and a number of other circumstances suggest that the position-angle traverse
is an unreliable indicator of the geometry in this pulsar, possibly in part because its low level ‘pedestal’ emission makes
it impossible to properly calibrate a Polarimeter which correlates orthogonal circular polarisations.
Taking the interpulse and main-pulse comp. II widths as indicators of the magnetic latitude, it appears that pulsar 1929+10
has anα value near 90‡ and thus has a two-pole interpulse geometry. This line of interpretation leads to interesting and consistent
results regarding the geometry of the conal components. Features corresponding to both an inner and outer cone are identified.
In addition, it appears that pulsar 1929+10–and a few other stars–have what we are forced to identify as a ‘furtherin’ cone,
with a conal emission radius of about2.3‡/P
1/2
Secondarily, 1929+10’s nearly complete linear polarisation provides an ideal opportunity to study how mechanisms of depolarisation
function on a pulse-to-pulse basis. Secondary-polarisation-mode emission appears in significant proportion only in some limited
ranges of longitude, and the subsequent depolarization is studied using different mode-separation techniques. The characteristics
of the two polarisation modes are particularly interesting, both because the primary mode usually dominates the secondary
so completely and because the structure seen in the secondary mode appears to bear importantly on the question of the pulsar’s
basic emission geometry. New secondary-mode features are detected in the average profile of this pulsar which appear independent
of the main-pulse component structure and which apparently constitute displaced modal emission.
Individual pulses during which the secondary-mode dominates the primary one are found to be considerably more intense than
the others and largely depolarised. Monte-Carlo modeling of the mode mixing in this region, near the boundary of comps. II
and III, indicates that the incoherent interference of two fully and orthogonally polarised modes can adequately account for
the observed depolarisation. The amplitude distributions of the two polarisation modes are both quite steady: the primary
polarisation mode is well fitted by a χ2 distribution with about nine degrees of freedom; whereas the secondary mode requires a more intense distribution which is
constant, but sporadic. 相似文献

Based on the epicyclic approximation, we have simulated the motion of the young open star clusters IC 4665 and Collinder 359. The separation between the cluster centers is shown to have been minimal 7 Myr ago, 36 pc. We have established a close evolutionary connection between IC 4665 and the Scorpius-Centaurus association — the separation between the centers of these structures was ≈200 pc 15 Myr ago. In addition, the center of IC 4665 at this time was near two well-known regions of coronal gas: the Local Bubble and the North Polar Spur. The star HIP 86768 is shown to be one of the candidates for a binary (in the past) with the pulsar PSR B1929+10. At the model radial velocity of the pulsar V r = 2 ± 50 km s?1, a close encounter of this pair occurs in the vicinity of IC 4665 at a time of ?1.1 Myr. At the same time, using currently available data for the pulsar B1929+10 at its model radial velocity V r = 200 ± 50 km s?1, we show that the hypothesis of Hoogerwerf et al. (2001) about the breakup of the ζ Oph-B1929+10 binary in the vicinity of Upper Scorpius (US) about 0.9 Myr ago is more plausible.

We discuss the implications of the recent X-ray and TeV γ-ray observations of the PSR B1259–63 system (a young rotation powered pulsar orbiting a Be star) for the theoretical models
of interaction of pulsar and stellar winds. We show that previously considered models have problems to account for the observed
behaviour of the system. We develop a model in which the broad band emission from the binary system is produced in result
of collisions of GeV–TeV energy protons accelerated by the pulsar wind and interacting with the stellar disk. In this model
the high energy γ-rays are produced in the decays of secondary neutral pions, while radio and X-ray emission are synchrotron and inverse Compton
emission produced by low-energy (≤100 MeV) electrons from the decays of secondary charged π
± mesons. This model can explain not only the observed energy spectra, but also the correlations between TeV, X-ray and radio
emission components.

Seven giant radio pulses were recorded from the millisecond pulsar PSR B1937+21 during ≈8.1 min observation by the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) at 326.5 MHz. Although sparse, these observations support most of the giant pulse behaviour reported at higher radio frequencies (430 to 2380 MHz). Within the main component of the integrated profile, they are emitted only in a narrow (≲47 μs) window of pulse phase, close to its peak. This has important implications for doing super-high precision timing of PSR B1937+21 at low radio frequencies. 相似文献

The characteristics of the “burst” (B) mode and “quiescent” (Q) mode pulse sequences–long known from studies at or below 103
MHz–are identified at 430 MHz for the first time. An 18-minute, Polarimetrie observation begins with a long Bmode sequence,
which has a higher average intensity, regular drifting subpulses, and a preponderance of primary polarisationmode radiation.
An abrupt transition to a Q-mode sequence is then marked by a) weaker average intensity, but occasional very bright individual
subpulses, b) a complete cessation of drifting subpulses, with disorganized subpulses now being emitted over a much wider
longitude interval, and c) near parity between the primary and secondary polarisation modes, resulting in pronounced depolarisation,
both of individual pulses and the average profile.
Careful study, however, of profile changes before and after this mode change reveals slower variations which both anticipate
the abrupt transition and respond to it. A slow attenuation of the intensity level of the dominant component is observed throughout
the duration of the B-mode sequence, which then accelerates with the onset of the Q-mode sequence. This slow variation appears
to represent a “preswitching transition” process; and the combination of effects on slow and abrupt time scales are finally
responsible for the formation of the characteristic B and Q-mode average profiles. 相似文献

We report on our analysis of two XMM-Newton observations of the Vela pulsar performed in December 2000 (total exposure time:
96.5 ks). We succeeded in resolving the pulsar spectrum from the surrounding bright nebular emission taking advantage both
of the accurate calibration of the EPIC point spread function and of the Chandra/HRC surface brightness map of the nebula.
This made it possible to assess to pulsar spectral shape disentangling its thermal and non-thermal components. Exploiting
the photon harvest, we have also been able to perform a phase-resolved study of the pulsar emission.

We present the results of observations of the pulsar PSR B0329+54 at 0.327, 1.5, 2.3, 4.8 and 8.4 GHz during 1999 between 03–12 and 06–08, using the 25-m radio telescope of NAOC Urumqi Station. The spectrum shows a bend, the spectral index is 1.59 at the low frequency end, and 2.45 at the high frequency end. The angular width of the average pulse profile and the angular separation between two weak peaks both decrease with increasing frequency. 相似文献

We report here on multifrequency radio observations of the pulsed emission from PSR B1259−63 around the time of the closest approach (periastron) to its B2e companion star. There was a general increase in the dispersion measure (DM) and scatter-broadening of the pulsar, and a decrease in the flux density towards periastron although fluctuation in these parameters were seen on time-scales as short as minutes. The pulsed emission disappeared 16 d prior to periastron and remained undetectable until 16 d after periastron.
The observations are used to determine the parameters of the wind from the Be star. We show that a simple model, in which the wind density varies with radius as r−2 , provides a good fit to the data. The wind is highly turbulent with an outer scale of ≤1010 cm and an inner scale perhaps as small as 104 cm, a mean density of ∼106 cm−3 and a velocity of ∼2000 km s−1 at a distance of ∼50 stellar radii. We find a correlation between DM variations and the pulse scattering times, suggesting that the same electrons are responsible for both effects. 相似文献

The fine structure and the variations of the optical pulse shape and phase of the Crab pulsar are studied on various time
scales. The observations have been carried out on 4-m William Hershel and 6-m BTA telescopes with APD photon counter, photomultiplier
based 4-channel photometer and PSD based panoramic spectrophotopolarimeter with 1 μs time resolution in 1994, 1999, 2003 and
2005–2006 years. The upper limit on the pulsar precession on Dec 2, 1999 is placed in the 10 s–2 hr time range. The evidence
of a varying from set to set fine structure of the main pulse is found in the 1999 and 2003 years data. No such fine structure
is detected in the integral pulse shape of 1994, 1999 and 2003 years.
The drastic change of the pulse shape in the 2005–2006 years set is detected along with the pulse shape variability and quasi-periodic
phase shifts.

Giant pulses have been detected from the pulsar PSR B0031-07. A pulse with an intensity higher than that of the average pulse by a factor of 50 or more is encountered approximately once per 300 observed periods. The peak flux density of the strongest pulse was 530 Jy, which is a factor of 120 higher than the peak flux density of the average pulse. The giant pulses are a factor of 20 narrower than the integrated profile and are clustered about its center. 相似文献
