It is assumed that the three-dimensional current system of a substorm passes three successive stages. (1) When a dawn-to-dusk magnetospheric electric field appears, a current system with field-aligned currents at the poleward boundary of the auroral zone arises. An equivalent ionospheric current system calculated, taking into account a day-night asymmetry of ionospheric conductivity, looks like the well-known DP-2 system including an eastward low-latitude current and a greater magnitude of the dusk vortex in comparison with the dawn one. (2) An electric drift of plasma towards the Earth leads to the appearance of a westward partial ring current increasing in time. This current is closed by field-aligned currents at the equatorward boundary of the auroral zone. The calculated equivalent current system is similar to the well-known one of the precursory phase. (3) An increase of the auroral ionospheric conductivity during the expansive phase produces an increase of all currents and a turning of field-aligned currents at the equatorward boundary of the auroral zone relative to those at the poleward one. The calculated equivalent current system is similar to the DP-1 system.  相似文献

A quantitative theoretical analysis of electric field and current distributions in the ionosphere is given assuming certain time variable convection field profiles at an altitude of 1250 km. A number of idealized assumptions regarding the ionospheric characteristics are defined and discussed. A qualitative discussion of a quasi-stationary configuration with an approximately curl free electric field is also given. Geomagnetically field aligned current densities i of the order 10−5−10−4A/m2 are consistent with quite reasonable assumptions about the convection field E. Oscillations in E with periods of the order of 10 sec should readily be generated when σ is large. In the quasi-stationary case there may be a mechanism that strengthens and concentrates i locally under certain conditions. It is found that a number of recent high altitude observations of convection field reversals may be consistent with large potential drops along the magnetic field lines. The solutions obtained as well as some of the basic assumptions are compared with observations.  相似文献

Under magnetically quiet conditions, ionospheric plasma in the midlatitude F-region corotates with the Earth and relative east-west drifts are small compared to the corotation velocity. During magnetic storms, however, the enhanced dawn-to-dusk magnetospheric convection electric field often penetrates into the midlatitude region, where it maps into the ionosphere as a poleward electric field in the 18:00 LT sector, producing a strong westward plasma drift. To evaluate the ionospheric response to this east-west drift, the time-dependent O+ continuity equation is solved numerically, including the effects of production by photoionization, loss by charge exchange and transport by diffusion, neutral wind and E × B drift. In this investigation only the neutral wind's meridional component and east-west E × B drift are included. It is found that an enhanced equatorward wind coupled with westward drift produces an enhancement in the peak electron density (NMAX(F2)) and in the electron content (up to 1000 km) in the afternoon sector and a subsequent greater-than-normal decay in ionization after 18:00 LT. These results agree in general with midlatitude F-region ionospheric storm observations of NMAX(F2) and electron content which show an afternoon enhancement over quiet-time values followed by an abrupt transition to lower-than-normal values. Westward drift appears to be a sufficient mechanism in bringing about this sharp transition.  相似文献

Many previous researchers have shown that convection in the magnetosphere is reflected in the ionosphere by an eastward electrojet in the evening sector and a westward electrojet in the post-midnight sector. In this paper we shall demonstrate the existence of eastward electrojet flow in the dawn sector in the latitude regime normally occupied by the westward convection electrojet. It will be shown that the convection westward electrojet near dawn may co-exist with the eastward electrojet while lying poleward of it. It is suggested that this eastward electrojet consists of Pedersen current flow driven by an eastward electric field and it is shown that the field lines which penetrate the eastward electrojet are populated by energetic electrons normally associated with the plasma sheet as well as high energy electrons normally associated with the trapped particle population. The high conductivity channel is generated by processes associated with the precipitation of high energy (E > 20 keV) electrons drifting eastwards from midnight in the trapping region. It is further shown that antiparallel current sheets may flow on the magnetic lines of force penetrating the electrojet, and that this flow is closed in the ionosphere by Hall currents flowing equatorward in the high conductivity channel.  相似文献

Although the Harang discontinuity has so far been identified in terms of various phenomena (such as ground magnetic fields, ionospheric currents, auroral features, and electric fields), the loci defined by those different phenomena do not always coincide. It is suggested that the Harang discontinuity may not be a line boundary across which the electric field changes its direction simply from poleward to equatorward, but that the field gradually rotates counterclockwise in a narrow region; thus the westward electric field dominates there. In such a case, no field-aligned current is necessarily required to flow from or into the discontinuity region. This view may be contrasted with the conventional view that an intense upward field-aligned current should flow from the Harang discontinuity. A model is presented in which the poleward ionospheric current (the Hall current resulting from the westward electric field) in the Harang discontinuity region connects the eastward electrojet and the westward electrojet.  相似文献

An isolated substorm occurred in Northern Scandinavia on 1 March, 1977 around magnetic midnight. The ionospheric phenomena associated with this substorm were studied by ground magnetometers, the Scandinavian Twin Auroral Radar Experiment (STARE), riometers and an all-sky camera. The physical properties of the auroral electrojet are determined from the ground magnetic field and the ionospheric electric field data. Mid and low latitude magnetic field data show evidence of field-aligned current flow. It is shown that the enhancement of the electrojet's current density is essentially determined by an increase in the ionospheric conductivity. The current system derived from the data of this study corresponds to a model of Yasuhara et al. (1975a).  相似文献

The magnetospheric plasma convection is studied, taking into account the finite conductivity along magnetic field lines. Field-aligned currents flowing at the inner boundary of the magnetospheric plasma sheet give rise to parallel electric fields which insignificantly affect the convection on the ionospheric level but change drastically the convection system in the magnetosphere. Intense azimuthal convective streams arise along both sides of the plasma sheet boundary. A part of convection lines appears to be completely closed in the inner magnetosphere.  相似文献

A simple model current sheet is studied numerically. Consistent fields and particle trajectories, and their dependence on electron and proton temperature, convection velocity and normal field, Bz, linking through the current sheet, are presented and discussed. It is shown that the protons, which are the major current carriers, largely retain the decoupling of the motion in the x-y plane from the normal oscillations as in the ‘cold’ current sheet. The positive potential of the current sheet is shown to be sufficient to trap some energetic electrons, the motion of which enables the predominance of energetic electrons towards the dawn side of the tail to be understood. Semi-empirical relationships for the thickness and the potential of the current sheet are obtained.

The consequences of such a current sheet on the behaviour of the geomagnetic tail are investigated. Using Faraday's law and the consistent cross tail electric field it is shown that the effect of a southward turning of the interplanetary field is to lead to a decrease in Bz,an increase of the current sheet conductivity, and a growth of stored field energy, i.e. the current sheet blocks merging. The decrease of the resistance of the current sheet is limited by the finite width of the tail. Finally, it is pointed out that if the conditions which bring about the growth of field energy persist, then the collapse of the field lines characteristic of substorms may occur.  相似文献

This report investigates the suggestion that the pattern of plasma convection in the polar cleft region is directly determined by the interplanetary electric field (IEF). Owing to the geometrical properties of the magnetosphere, the East-West component of the IEF will drive field-aligned currents which connect to the ionosphere at points lying on either side of noon, while currents associated with the North-South component of the IEF will connect the two polar caps as sheet currents centered at noon. The effects of the hypothesized IEF driven cleft current systems on polar cap ionospheric plasma convection are investigated through a series of numerical simulations. The simulations demonstrate that this simple electrodynamic model can account for the narrow “throats” of strong dayside antisunward convection observed during periods of southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) as well as the sunward convection observed during periods of strongly northward IMF. Thedawn-dusk shift of polar cap convection which is related to the By component of the IMF is also accounted for by the model.  相似文献

The simplest model illustrating the effect of the magnetospheric charge-current field on the structure of a pulsar magnetic field has the region within the light-cylinder filled with the GoldreichJulian charge density which corotates with the neutron star, but has no electric currents along the magnetic field lines. This model has previously been studied for the axisymmetric case, with the rotation and magnetic dipolar axes aligned. The analogous problem is now solved with the two axes mutually perpendicular, so that not only the material current arising from the rotating charges but also the displacement current contributes. Again, the constructed magnetic field B 0 crosses the light-cylinder normally, and there is no energy flux to infinity. However, in a more realistic model there is a flow of current along B 0, generating a field B 1 which has a non-vanishing toroidal component at the light-cylinder, so yielding a finite integrated Poynting flux.  相似文献

Numerical calculations for the electric current in the polar ionosphere have been made by assuming some realistic distributions of the electric field and conductivity. Two dynamo actions are taken into account; one of which is induced by ionospheric winds and the other by the solar wind. For the solar wind dynamo action, it is found that the secondary polarization field caused by non-uniform distribution of ionospheric conductivity is much larger than the primary field induced by the solar wind, suggesting its important effect on charged particles in the magnetosphere, and that the irrotational current having a source and sink is of the same order of magnitude as the solenoidal current closing its circuit in the ionosphere. It is also found that the solar wind is, in general, more effective than the ionospheric winds in producing polar current systems such as DP 1 and 2, but in some cases the ionospheric winds have a significant effect on the current distribution.  相似文献

From the world distribution of geomagnetic disturbance, the connection between the electric current in the ionosphere, the field-aligned current and asymmetric equatorial ringcurrent in the magnetosphere is discussed. The partial ring-current in the afternoon-evening region, whose intensity is closely correlated with the AE-index, usually develops and decays earlier than the symmetric ring-current in the course of magnetic storms. The partial ringcurrent seems to have a direct connection with the positive geomagnetic bay in high latitudes in the evening hours through the ionizing effect of the particles leaking from the partial ringcurrent. The dawn-to-dusk electric field in the magnetospheric tail is transferred to the polar ionosphere, producing there the twin vortex Hall current responsible for polar cap geomagnetic variation. The magnetic effect of the associated Pedersen current in the ionosphere is shown to be small but still worth considering. The electrojet near midnight along the auroral oval is thought to appear when the electric conductivity of the ionosphere is locally increased under the presence of large scale dawn-to-dusk electric field. The occasional appearance of a localized abnormal geomagnetic disturbance with reversed direction near the geomagnetic pole seems to suggest the occasional reversal of electric field near the outer surface of the magnetospheric tail, especially when the interplanetary magnetic field is northward.  相似文献

On 15 February, 1977, ground magnetic, ionospheric electric and auroral signatures of a multiple onset substorm were observed simultaneously by the Scandinavian Magnetometer Array (SMA), the Scandinavian Twin Auroral Radar Experiment (STARE) and the Finnish all-sky camera chain. Between 21:00 and 21:30 U.T., i.e. around local magnetic midnight, three consecutive local auroral break-ups were observed over Scandinavia. Each of these break-ups was preceded by a clear fading of the aurora and magnetic fields (while the electric fields remained unaffected), and occurred slightly south of the Harang discontinuity in the region of north-westward-directed electric fields. They were associated with a sudden change in direction of the electric field from north-west to south-west and the appearance of a westward equivalent current in the localized active region (about 1200 × 300 km2). These observations matched the features to be expected during the generation of a Cowling channel by a strong increase of the ionospheric conductivities due to precipitating auroral electrons. Numerical model calculations, based on the observations during the initial brightening and peak development of the second, most conspicuous break-up, show that the field-aligned currents at the northern and southern border of the active region are indeed very weak. However, highly localized and intense upward field-aligned currents at the western edge of the active region and more widespread and less intense downward currents in the eastern half preserve current continuity of the westward Cowling current and complete the substorm current wedge.  相似文献

We discuss the possibility of exciting whistler mode waves (WMWs) in the Earth's ionosphere, by using two high frequency beams of electromagnetic waves (f1f2) suitably orientated to the geomagnetic field Ho, so that a non-linear resonant interaction can take place in the natural ionospheric plasma, approximately at the altitude of the F2 maximum electron density. Within the limitations imposed by ionospheric inhomogeneities in the interaction region, it should be possible to excite a WMW which propagates along a predetermined direction, e.g. parallel to Ho.

If we assumef1 andf2 to be approx 30 MHz (i.e. well above the ionospheric plasma frequency), this method would make it possible to select and vary the frequency range of the excited WMW up to a few hundreds kHz without substantial alterations to the high frequency transmitting system.

Since the two beams should form an angle close to 90° to the direction of propagation of the WMW, this technique may prove particularly suitable for active wave experiments at low geomagnetic latitudes, where the geometry of the geomagnetic field limits the feasibility of direct wave injection experiments.

Using the results of theoretical calculations of the three wave coupling coefficients, it will be shown that the transmitters required to produce WMWs with field strengths comparable to that of naturally occurring strong whistlers are substantial, but feasible.  相似文献

Electric and magnetic fields and auroral emissions have been measured by the Intercosmos-Bulgaria-1300 satellite on 10–11 January 1983. The measured distributions of the plasma drift velocity show that viscous convection is diminished in the evening sector under IMF By < 0 and in the morning sector if IMF By > 0. A number of sun-aligned polar cap arcs were observed at the beginning of the period of strongly northward IMF and after a few hours a θ-aurora appeared. The intensity of ionized oxygen emission [O+(2P), 7320 Å] increased significantly reaching up to several kilo-Rayleighs in the polar cap arc. A complicated pattern of convection and field-aligned currents existed in the nightside polar cap which differed from the four-cell model of convection and NBZ field-aligned current system. This pattern was observed during 12 h and could be interpreted as six large scale field-aligned current sheets and three convective vortices inside the polar cap. Sun-aligned polar cap arcs may be located in regions both of sunward and anti-sunward convection. Structures of smaller spatial scale correspond to the boundaries of hot plasma regions related to polar cap arcs. Obviously these structures are due to S-shaped distributions of electric potential. Parallel electric fields in these S-structures provide electron acceleration up to 1 keV at the boundaries of polar cap arcs. The pairs of field-aligned currents correspond to those S-structures: a downward current at the external side of the boundary and an upward current at the internal side of it.  相似文献

Equatorial behaviour of a polar-originating ionospheric current is examined by solving numerically the continuity equation on a two-dimensional spherical shell with appropriate assumptions for the ionospheric conductivity and the field-aligned source currents. The results show a clear daytime equatorial enhancement of the ionospheric currents in spite of much reduced electric field due to shielding effects of the enhanced Cowling conductivity there. The results are used for interpretation of the preliminary impulse of the geomagnetic sudden commencement.  相似文献

We propose a model three-dimensional current system for the magnetospheric substorm, which can account for the new findings of the field-aligned and ionospheric currents obtained during the last few years by using new techniques. They include (1) the ionospheric currents at the auroral latitude deduced from the Chatanika incoherent scatter radar data, (2) the field-aligned currents inferred from the vector magnetic field observations by the TRIAD satellite and (3) the global distribution of auroras with respect to the auroral electrojets appearing in DMSP satellite photographs. The model current system is also tested by a computer model calculation of the ionospheric current pattern. It is shown that the auroral electrojets have a strong asymmetry with respect to the midnight meridian. The westward electrojet flows along the discrete aurora in the evening sector, as well as along the diffuse aurora in the morning sector. The eastward electrojet flows equatorward of the westward electrojet in the evening sector. It has a northward component and joins the westward electrojet by turning westward across the Harang discontinuity. Thus, the latitudinal width of the westward electrojet in the morning sector is much larger than that in the evening sector. The field-aligned currents, consisting of two pairs of upward and inward currents (one is located in the morning sector and the other in the evening sector), are closed neither simply by the east-west ionospheric currents nor by the north-south currents, but by a complicated combination of the north-south and east-west paths in the ionosphere. The magnetospheric extension of the current system is also briefly discussed.  相似文献

We present estimates of the day-side ionospheric conductivities at Mars based on magnetic field measurements by Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) at altitudes down to ∼100 km during aerobraking orbits early in the mission. At Mars, the so-called ionospheric dynamo region, where plasma/neutral collisions permit electric currents perpendicular to the magnetic field, lies between 100 and 250 km altitude. We find that the ionosphere is highly conductive in this region, as expected, with peak Pedersen and Hall conductivities of 0.1-1.5 S/m depending on the solar illumination and induced magnetospheric conditions. Furthermore, we find a consistent double peak pattern in the altitude profile of the day-side Pedersen conductivity, similar to that on Titan found by Rosenqvist et al. (2009). A high altitude peak, located between 180 and 200 km, is equivalent to the terrestrial peak in the lower F-layer. A second and typically much stronger layer of Pedersen conductivity is observed between 120 and 130 km, which is below the Hall conductivity peak at about 130-140 km. In this altitude region, MGS finds a sharp decrease in induced magnetic field strength at the inner magnetospheric boundary, while the day-side electron density is known to remain high as far down as 100 km. We find that such Titan-like behaviour of the Pedersen conductivity is only observed under regions of strongly draped magnetospheric field-lines, and negligible crustal magnetic anomalies below the spacecraft. Above regions of strong crustal magnetic anomalies, the Pedersen conductivity profile becomes more Earth-like with one strong Pedersen peak above the Hall conductivity peak. Here, both conductivities are 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than the above only weakly magnetised crustal regions, depending on the strength of the crustal anomaly field at ionospheric altitudes. This nature of the Pedersen conductivity together with the structured distribution of crustal anomalies all over the planet should give rise to strong conductivity gradients around such anomalies. Day-side ionospheric conductivities on Mars (in regions away from the crustal magnetic anomalies) and Titan seem to behave in a very similar manner when horizontally draped magnetic field-lines partially magnetise a sunlit ionosphere. Therefore, it appears that a similar double peak structure of strong Pedersen conductivity could be a more general feature of non-magnetised bodies with ionised upper atmospheres, and thus should be expected to occur also at other non-magnetised terrestrial planets like Venus or other planetary bodies within the host planet magnetospheres.  相似文献

The distributions of the current and the neutral winds driven by the electric field of convection are calculated in the dynamo-region of the ionosphere. At high latitudes the convection field drives the current and wind systems which consist of two cells with the centres at about 6 and 18 hours LT. In the northern hemisphere in the dawn cells winds and currents are clockwise, in the dusk cells they are counterclockwise. The appearance of the wind system shows that the upper atmosphere moves in the direction inverse to the displacement of the ionospheric ends of the magnetic flux tubes taking part in the convection. In the disturbed conditions the calculated wind system has the directions and velocities of the winds which are in a satisfactory agreement with the data of the irregularity drifts in the lower ionosphere in the winter season.  相似文献

The effect of an electric field induced by a rapidly decaying ring current on the motion of charged particles in the magnetosphere has been investigated using Euler potentials. For a model consisting of the earth dipole and the symmetric ring current, the electric field satisfies the condition E . B = 0.

Under this circumstance, the E × B drift of the particle can be identified as the motion of the magnetic field lines and vice versa. The time dependent electric field induced can be evaluated in a Spherical polar coordinate system by the formula

where and β are Euler potentials.

A model calculation on the particle drift velocity vD = E × B/B2 shows that the radial component of the drift velocity is in good agreement with those deduced from whistler duct studies.  相似文献
