Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS) is a subsurface and topside ionosphere radar sounder aboard the European Space Agency spacecraft Mars Express, in orbit at Mars since 25 December 2003, and in operation since 17 June 2005. The ionospheric sounding mode of MARSIS is capable of detecting the reflection of the sounding wave from the martian surface. This ability has been used in previous work to show that the surface reflection is absorbed and disappears during periods when high fluxes of energetic particles are incident on the ionosphere of Mars. These absorption events are believed to be the result of increased collisional damping of the sounding wave, caused by increased electron density below the spacecraft, in turn caused by impact ionization from the impinging particles. In this work we identify two absorption events that were isolated during periods when the surface reflection is consistently visible and when Mars is nearly at opposition. The visibility of the surface reflection is viewed in conjunction with particle and photon measurements taken at both Mars and Earth. Both absorption events are found to coincide with Earth passing through solar wind speed and ion flux signatures indicative of a corotating interaction region (CIR). The two events are separated by an interval of approximately 27 days, corresponding to one solar rotation. The first of the two events coincides with abruptly enhanced particle fluxes seen in situ at Mars. Simultaneous with the particle enhancement there are an abrupt decrease in the intensity of electron oscillations, typically seen by the Mars Express particle instrument ASPERA-3 between the magnetic pileup boundary and the martian bow shock, and a sharp drop in the solar wind pressure, seen in the proxy quantity based on MGS magnetometer observations. The decrease in oscillation intensity is therefore the probable effect of a relaxation of the martian bow shock. The second absorption event does not show a particle enhancement and complete ASPERA-3 data during that time are unavailable. Other absorption events are the apparent result of solar X-ray and XUV enhancements. We conclude that surface reflection absorption events are sometimes caused by enhanced ionospheric ionization from high energy particles accelerated by the shocks associated with a CIR. A full statistical analysis of CIRs in relation to observed absorption events in conjunction with a quantitative analysis of the deposition of ionization during space weather events is needed for a complete understanding of this phenomenon. If such analyses can be carried out, radar sensing of the martian ionosphere might be useful as a space weather probe.  相似文献

We present neutral hydrogen absorption observations of the luminous infrared merger NGC 6240 using MERLIN with a resolution of 0.2 arcsec. Broad absorption (a few hundred km s−1) has been found against two compact radio sources within the central kpc providing dynamical information about the neutral gas components in front of these sources. A narrow absorption component is also detected superimposed upon this broad absorption and additionally against some of the extended L -band continuum. From these results we deduce that the broad component is a result of absorption by a highly disturbed disc-like structure of neutral gas aligned along the position angle of the two compact radio sources, similar to the model previously proposed by Tacconi et al. at the end of the last century based on spectral CO emission data. The narrow component is likely to arise from absorption by less disturbed neutral gas at much larger scales within the system.
Continuum observations presented here at 1.4 and 5 GHz support the view that NGC 6240 contains a double nucleus resulting from a galactic merger event and show these as two compact radio sources separated by 1.52 arcsec. We have also applied luminosity and morphological considerations to the continuum results to determine the most feasible source of radio emission for this luminous merger galaxy. We conclude that the most likely source of the radio flux found in NGC 6240 is a combination of starburst emission from radio luminous supernova remnants, similar to those found in Arp 220, and emission from a weak AGN probably triggered by a merger event.  相似文献

We present the analysis and first results from the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) during the 320-ks XMM–Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG–6-30-15. The spectrum is marked by a sharp drop in flux at 0.7 keV which has been interpreted by Branduardi-Raymont et al. using RGS spectra from an earlier and shorter observation as the blue wing of a strong relativistic O  viii emission line and by Lee et al. using a Chandra spectrum as due to a dusty warm absorber. We find that the drop is well explained by the Fe  i L2,3 absorption edges and obtain reasonable fits over the 0.32–1.7 keV band using a multizone, dusty warm absorber model constructed using the photoionization code cloudy . Some residuals remain which could be due to emission from a relativistic disc, but at a much weaker level than from any simple model relying on relativistic emission lines alone. A model based on such emission lines can be made to fit if sufficient (warm) absorption is added, although the line strengths exceed those expected. In order to distinguish further whether the spectral shape is dominated by absorption or emission, we examined the difference spectrum between the highest and lowest flux states of the source. The EPIC pn data indicate that this is a power law in the 3–10 keV band which, if extrapolated to lower energies, reveals the absorption function acting on the intrinsic spectrum, provided that any emission lines do not scale exactly with the continuum. We find that this function matches our dusty warm absorber model well if the power law steepens below 2 keV. The soft X-ray spectrum is therefore dominated by absorption structures, with the equivalent width of any individual emission lines in the residuals being below approximately 30 eV.  相似文献

We present results from time-series optical spectroscopy of the low-inclination, nova-like cataclysmic variable, V592 Cas. The data span the wavelength range from ∼4000 to 5000  Å, and include Balmer lines (Hβ to Hε) as well as He i and He ii . The Balmer lines are generally characterized by shallow absorption troughs with superimposed narrower central emission components. The absorption troughs are variable on time-scales of at least ∼20 min, but the fluctuations are asymmetric such that they are more dominant on the blueward side of the profile out to ∼−2000 km s−1. Fourier analysis reveals modulation periods for emission radial velocities and absorption changes of ∼0.114 and 0.103 d; we support earlier suggestions that the latter is likely to be 1-day alias of the former, which is essentially the system orbital period. However, there is a phase lag of ∼0.3 between absorption and emission changes. The Balmer absorption changes are compared to the predicted behaviour caused by the (stream overflowing) SW Sex phenomenon. There are several discrepancies in this scenario, including the highly asymmetric nature of blueward changes, the velocity amplitudes, and the phase relation to the emission changes. The role of a disc wind in V592 Cas is also discussed; in particular, with this data set, we cannot rule in or rule out the possibility that axisymmetry of the outflow is broken because it is seated on a warped/tilted inner disc, which is implied by previous evidence for negative superhumps in this system.

We report the GMRT detection of associated HI 21 cm-line absorption in thez = 1.1946 red quasar 3C 190. Most of the absorption is blue-shifted with respect to the systemic redshift. The absorption, at ~ 647.7 MHz, is broad and complex, spanning a velocity width of ~ 600 kms?1. Since the core is self-absorbed at this frequency, the absorption is most likely towards the hotspots. Comparison of the radio and deep optical images reveal linear filaments in the optical which overlap with the brighter radio jet towards the south-west. We therefore suggest that most of the HI 21 cm-line absorption could be occurring in the atomic gas shocked by the south-west jet.  相似文献

We analyze the thermal infrared spectra of Jupiter obtained by the Cassini-CIRS instrument during the 2000 flyby to infer temperature and cloud density in the jovian stratosphere and upper troposphere. We use an inversion technique to derive zonal mean vertical profiles of cloud absorption coefficient and optical thickness from a narrow spectral window centered at 1392 cm−1 (7.18 μm). At this wavenumber atmospheric absorption due to ammonia gas is very weak and uncertainties in the ammonia abundance do not impact the cloud retrieval results. For cloud-free conditions the atmospheric transmission is limited by the absorption of molecular hydrogen and methane. The gaseous optical depth of the atmosphere is of order unity at about 1200 mbar. This allows us to probe the structure of the atmosphere through a layer where ammonia cloud formation is expected. The results are presented as height vs latitude cross-sections of the zonal mean cloud optical depth and cloud absorption coefficient. The cloud optical depth and the cloud base pressure exhibit a significant variability with latitude. In regions with thin cloud cover (cloud optical depth less than 2), the cloud absorption coefficient peaks at 1.1±0.05 bar, whereas in regions with thick clouds the peak cloud absorption coefficient occurs in the vicinity of 900±50 mbar. If the cloud optical depth is too large the location of the cloud peak cannot be identified. Based on theoretical expectations for the ammonia condensation pressure we conclude that the detected clouds are probably a system of two different cloud layers: a top ammonia ice layer at about 900 mbar covering only limited latitudes and a second, deeper layer at 1100 mbar, possibly made of ammonium hydrosulfide.  相似文献

The influence of radiation on the electron velocity distribution in a hot nonrelativistic plasma localized near the surface of magnetic white dwarfs is investigated. The part played by the plasma in the formation of cyclotron features in the optical spectrum of these stars is studied. The region of parameters where the transverse temperature of plasma is defined by the brightness temperature of extraordinary radiation at the gyrofrequency is found. When escaping from the plasma in a homogeneous magnetic field, this component forms a cyclotron line in absorption. The ordinary radiation at the gyrofrequency and both modes at higher cyclotron harmonics are in emission or absorption depending on the magnetic field strength and hot plasma density. Possible interpretation of the observed spectral features of magnetic white dwarfs in terms of the developed theory is discussed.  相似文献

The origin of the soft X-ray excess emission observed in many type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been an unresolved problem in X-ray astronomy for over two decades. We develop the model proposed by Gierliński & Done, which models the soft excess with heavily smeared, ionized, absorption, by including the emission that must be associated with this absorption. We show that, rather than hindering the ionized absorption model, the addition of the emission actually helps this model reproduce the soft excess. The emission fills in some of the absorption trough, while preserving the sharp rise at ∼1 keV, allowing the total model to reproduce the soft excess curvature from a considerably wider range of model parameters. We demonstrate that this model is capable of reproducing even the strongest soft X-ray excesses by fitting it to the XMM–Newton EPIC PN spectrum of PG1211+143, with good results. The addition of the emission reduces the column density required to fit these data by a factor of ∼2 and reduces the smearing velocity from ∼0.28c to ∼0.2c. Gierliński & Done suggested a tentative origin for the absorption in the innermost, accelerating, region of an accretion disc wind, and we highlight the advantages of this interpretation in comparison to accretion disc reflection models of the soft excess. Associating this material with a wind off the accretion disc results in several separate problems however, namely, the radial nature, and the massive implied mass-loss rate, of the wind. We propose an origin in a 'failed wind', where the central X-ray source is strong enough to overionize the wind, removing the acceleration through line absorption before the material reaches escape velocity, allowing the material to fall back to the disc at larger radii.  相似文献

A spectrum of Saturn obtained from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory exhibits an emission peak at 6.8 μm attributed to ethane, but is otherwise dominated by absorption from 5.3 to 7.2 μm. While the large absorption in this spectral region is consistent with the presence of ammonia gas or ammonia ice, or both, such an explanation is inconsistent with the lack of a major absorption near 3.0 μm.  相似文献

Global maps of the macroscopic thermal neutron absorption cross section of Vesta's regolith by the Gamma Ray and Neutron Detector (GRaND) on board the NASA Dawn spacecraft provide constraints on the abundance and distribution of Fe, Ca, Al, Mg, and other rock‐forming elements. From a circular, polar low‐altitude mapping orbit, GRaND sampled the regolith to decimeter depths with a spatial resolution of about 300 km. At this spatial scale, the variation in neutron absorption is about seven times lower than that of the Moon. The observed variation is consistent with the range of absorption for howardite whole‐rock compositions, which further supports the connection between Vesta and the howardite, eucrite, and diogenite meteorites. We find a strong correlation between neutron absorption and the percentage of eucritic materials in howardites and polymict breccias, which enables petrologic mapping of Vesta's surface. The distribution of basaltic eucrite and diogenite determined from neutron absorption measurements is qualitatively similar to that indicated by visible and near infrared spectroscopy. The Rheasilvia basin and ejecta blanket has relatively low absorption, consistent with Mg‐rich orthopyroxene. Based on a combination of Fe and neutron absorption measurements, olivine‐rich lithologies are not detected on the spatial scales sampled by GRaND. The sensitivity of GRaND to the presence of mantle material is described and implications for the absence of an olivine signature are discussed. High absorption values found in Vesta's “dark” hemisphere, where exogenic hydrogen has accumulated, indicate that this region is richer in basaltic eucrite, representative of Vesta's ancient upper crust.  相似文献

It is shown that the well-known 2200 Å peak in the extinction of starlight is explained by microorganisms. A mixed culture of diatoms and bacteria, which previously we found to give excellent fits to astronomical data in the infrared, has a peak absorption slightly shortward of 2200 Å, in very close agreement with the absorptions found indirections towards most early-type stars. The peak absorption is measured to be ~ 35000 cm2g-1. This is in addition to a scattering component of the extinction which has an estimated value for dry microorganisms of ~ 50000 cm2g-1. The scattering calculated for a size distribution of non-absorbing hollow bacteria with irregularities on the scale of 300 Å produces agreement with both the visual extinction law and the observed λ-1 type extinction at the far ultraviolet. The contribution to the extinction from a pure scattering bacterial model is about 3.4 mag per kpc path length along the galactic plane at λ =2175 Å. Absorption near this wavelength effectively adds ~ 2.3 mag per kpc, making up precisely the observed total extinction at the peak of 5.7 mag per kpc. The full range of the interstellar extinction observations is now elegantly explained on the basis of a bacterial model alone with no added components or free parameters to be fitted. Photolysis has little effect on the bulk refractive index of the particles and so does not change the scattering component appreciably. But photolysis due to sufficient UV in space can reduce the effectiveness of the 2200 Å absorption in comparison with the scattering, thereby decreasing the height of the absorption peak. An extreme example of this is the Large Magellanic Cloud, where UV emission from a profusion of early-type stars has reduced the absorbance of the particles to about one-quarter of its value for most of our galaxy. The 2200 Å absorption has generally been attributed to small graphite particles. We explain how this belief has come about and why in the past we have been swayed by it.  相似文献

The radiation spectra of supersoft X-ray sources based on a model for hydrogen burning on the white dwarf surface are investigated by solving hydrostatic equilibrium, radiative equilibrium, statistical equilibrium and radiative transfer self-consistently for various sets of mass, radius and luminosity. It is found that the radiation spectrum shows many bound–free emission/absorption features and greatly deviates from the blackbody spectrum at the effective temperature. By the effect of incoherent Compton scattering, the bound–free emission/absorption features do not appear in strong emission/absorption edges, as predicted by coherent models without Compton scattering, but appear as weak humps and relatively shallow absorption edges. The difference between the incoherent model and the coherent model is prominent for L 0.5 L Edd. A calculated spectrum is fitted to the ASCA observations of RX J0925.7−4758. It is found that the entire spectrum of RX J0925.7−4758 cannot be reproduced by model atmospheres with any parameter sets. This suggests that the observed spectrum consists of two or more components. In this case, the atmospheric component is explained by the emission from a white dwarf near the Chandrasekhar limit (∼1.4 M) with L ∼0.2 L Edd at a distance of 16–20 kpc.  相似文献

The 1667-MHz ground-state hydroxyl (OH) line has been observed towards positions on Puppis A as well as in the immediate vicinity of this supernova remnant (SNR). The spectra at two positions on Puppis A show absorption lines at velocities less than +7.6 km s1, and emission lines above this velocity. Analysis of all four 18 cm OH lines indicates that Puppis A must lie between the OH clouds seen in absorption and emission, giving it a v lsr of +7.6 km s1. This implies that the kinematic distance to Puppis A is The OH clouds in front of Puppis A are slightly anomalously excited, as shown by analysis of the four 18 cm OH lines at the two observed positions on Puppis A. There is no evidence of any interaction of the SNR with the clouds in front of and behind it.  相似文献

We investigate the dependence of QSO Ly α absorption features on the temperature of the absorbing gas and on the amplitude of the underlying dark-matter fluctuations. We use high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations in cold dark matter dominated cosmological models. In models with a hotter intergalactic medium (IGM), the increased temperature enhances the pressure gradients between low- and high-density regions and this changes the spatial distribution and the velocity field of the gas. Combined with more thermal broadening, this leads to significantly wider absorption features in hotter models. Cosmological models with little small-scale power also have broader absorption features, because fluctuations on the scale of the Jeans length are still in the linear regime. Consequently, both the amplitude of dark-matter fluctuations on small scales and thermal smoothing affect the flux decrement distribution in a similar way. However, the b -parameter distribution of Voigt profile fits, obtained by deblending the absorption features into a sum of thermally broadened lines, is largely independent of the amount of small-scale power, but does depend strongly on the IGM temperature. The same is true for the two-point function of the flux and for the flux power spectrum on small scales. These three flux statistics are thus sensitive probes of the temperature of the IGM. We compare the values computed for our models and obtained from a HIRES spectrum of the quasar Q1422+231 and conclude that the IGM temperature at z ∼3.25 is fairly high, T 0≳15 000 K. The flux decrement distribution of the observed spectrum is fitted well by that of a ΛCDM model with that temperature.  相似文献

Several atmospherically important reactions involve the formation of a complex between the reagent molecule(s) and one or more water molecules. We will present a brief review of this phenomenon and give some of our recent ab initio results on the effect that the formation of complexes with water may have on the photodissociation of ozone, nitric and peroxynitric acids. Changes in the singlet-triplet potential energy surface splittings and absorption intensities when ozone is complexed with water are inferred from the photochemistry of the complex [Hurwitz and Namaan, 1995]. A significant red shift in the vertical excitation energy of at least one triplet state of ozone is predicted by our calculations, when the molecule is in a complex with water. No such changes are predicted for the acids: their electronic absorption spectra remain unaltered by water complex formation. The infrared absorption intensities of their OH vibrational stretch transitions, however, are enhanced by about an order of magnitude in the complex.  相似文献

Observations of the scattering of acoustic waves by sunspots show a substantial deficit in scattered power relative to incident power. A number of calculations have attempted to model this process in terms of absorption at the magnetohydrodynamic Alfvén resonance. The results presented here extend these calculations to the case of a highly structured axisymmetric translationally invariant flux-tube embedded in a uniform atmosphere. The fractional energy absorbed is calculated for models corresponding to flux-tubes of varying radius, mean flux-density and location below the photosphere. The effects of twist are also included. It is found that absorption can be very efficient even in models with low mean magnetic flux density, provided the flux is concentrated into intense slender annuli. Twist is found to increase the range of wave numbers over which absorption is efficient, but it does not remove the low absorption at low azimuthal orders which is a feature of resonance absorption calculations in axisymmetric geometry, and which is in conflict with observation. These results suggest that resonance absorption could be an efficient mechanism in plage fields and fibril sunspots as well as in monolithic sunspots. At present it is too early to make any definite deductions about sunspot structure from the observations, but the possible future use of sunspot seismology to resolve open questions in the theory of sunspots is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The dependence of the wavelength of peak absorption of dust grains on the grain size is investigated analytically by using an oscillator model for the absorption band. The peak wavelength of a weak absorption band is much less sensitive to the grain size than that of a strong band. This is explained by the fact that the surface mode, which is excited in the strong absorption band, is not raised in the weak absorption band. A quenched carbonaceous composite (QCC) synthesized from hydrocarbon plasma is found to have a weak absorption band at 220 nm. The absorption peak wavelength of the QCC grains falls well in the range of 217±7 nm even if the grain size runs from 5 to 100 nm. This is compatible with the observed constancy of the 220 nm hump (217±5 nm). By contrast, the absorption peak of graphite grains, which have a strong band around 280 nm and have been investigated as candidates for the hump, is very sensitive to the grain size. A quite narrow range of the grain size is required to account for the observed 220 nm feature. A weak absorption model, such as the QCC grains, is suggested to be a more likely candidate for the 220 nm extinction hump than a strong absorption model, such as graphite grains.Paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

Using the recently completed Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope, we have detected the HI 21 cm-line absorption from the peculiar galaxy C153 in the galaxy cluster Abell 2125. The HI absorption is at a redshift of 0.2533, with a peak optical depth of 0.36. The full width at half minimum of the absorption line is 100 km s−1. The estimated column density of atomic Hydrogen is 0.7×1022(T s /100) cm−2. The HI absorption is redshifted by ∼400km s−1 compared to the [OIII] emission line from this system. We attribute this to an infalling cold gas or to an out-flowing ionised gas, or to a combination of both as a consequence of tidal interactions of C153 with either a cluster galaxy or the cluster potential.  相似文献

The near-infrared spectrum of Triton is characterized by strong absorption bands of methane, probably in the solid state. An additional absorption band at 2.16 μm is tentatively identified as the density-induced (2-0) band of molecular nitrogen in the liquid state. The fundamental overtones of this band system cannot presently be observed because of limitations of the terrestrial atmosphere or spectral signal precision. Using the absorption coefficient for this band derived from laboratory observations and from the literature, it is calculated that Triton must have a layer of nitrogen at least tens of centimeters deep over much of its surface; this quantity is plausible in terms of the cosmic abundance of nitrogen and by comparison with Titan where a massive atmosphere of nitrogen exists. The Triton spectrum has been modeled with liquid nitrogen and solid methane, and it is found that the shape of the continuum in two spectral regions can be properly accounted for by adding a spectral component corresponding to fine-grained water frost. It is speculated that yet another component, a dark, solid, photochemical derivative of methane, may occur as a trace contaminant of the surface materials. If much of the surface of Triton is liquid, the radiometric observations of the satellite must be reinterpreted to derive the radius and surface albedo. If there is liquid nitrogen exposed on the surface, the atmosphere of Triton is probably dominated by nitrogen rather than methane because of the much higher vapor pressure of the former. At the calculated subsolar temperature of Triton, the vapor pressure of nitrogen implies a surface atmospheric pressure in the range 0.13 to 0.30 atm.  相似文献
