Pseudo-resonance absorption lines in planetary nebulae: Discovery?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The possibility of the formation of pseudo-resonance absorption lines in planetary nebulae is predicted only theoretically. However, this has not been confirmed by direct observations. In the present article an attempt has been made to show, as a result of careful analysis of IUE spectral recordings for a group of planetary nebulae, that the existence of one pseudo-resonance line 1300 SiIII is without doubt at least in spectra of three planetary nebulae: NGC 2610, NGC 3587, and NGC 6891. The presence of this line in the spectra of the other three planetary nebulae, NGC 6210, IC 3568, and IC 4776, seems to be probable. The role of the interstellar selective absorption, the blending effect by the resonance lines of SiII,Oi, andSi in the formation of the pseudo-resonance line 1300 SiIII as well as the possibility of formation of this line in the photosphere of central star of nebula were analysed.  相似文献

Although the Salpeter approximation for static screening is widely accepted and used in stellar modeling, the question of dynamic screening has been revisited. Here we reproduce Shaviv and Shaviv’s numerical analysis of the screening energy for p-p reactions in the solar core using the techniques of molecular dynamics to directly calculate the motion of ions and electrons due to Coulomb interactions without the mean-field assumption that is inherent in the Salpeter approximation. We conclude that the effects of dynamic screening are relevant and should be included in the treatment of the plasma, especially in the computation of nuclear reaction rates.  相似文献

Wavelengths and bisector indices (a special measure for the asymmetry of a line near its bottom) are determined for 70 lines in each of 47 high-dispersion spectra. The spectra were obtained with the Fourier Transform Spectrograph connected to the McMath Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory; they all cover the same spectral range from 3200 to 4000 Å and concern either the full disk (19 disk spectra), or the disk center (9 center spectra), or two areas at sin = 0.85 on the west- and east-side of the disk (19 limb spectra). The main observing seasons were June 1986, June 1987, April and June/July 1988. The - relative - position of an individual line in one spectrum can be established with a precision of about 4 m s-1, the precision of one bisector index is 1–2 m s-1.Wavelengths and bisector indices show of course the typical characteristics which result from the familiar effects known as blueshift, limb effect and line asymmetry. However, concerning their variations in time, unexpected results are obtained:(1) Even in disk spectra the time-scales of the wavelength variations are often in the order of one hour or less. (2) For all 3 types of spectra (disk, center, limb) the variations depend not only on the known parameters such as line depth and - occasionally - excitation potential, but also - often even primarily - on wavelength. (3) In center spectra, the wavelength differences between strong and faint lines can vary by as much as 500 m s-1, in disk spectra short-time variations of wavelength differences can amount to more than 50 m s-1. (4) For most spectra there is not only a very pronounced and narrow correlation between line shift and line temperature (a special measure for the line depth), but also a significant correlation between line shift and variation of the bisector index.Clearly, the observed effects must be attributed to variations of the velocity fields in the upper photosphere/lower chromosphere (super-granulation cells, overshooting, oscillations), which either influence the line wavelengths directly via the Doppler-effect, or indirectly by changing the contrast between the blue-shifted granules and the red-shifted intergranular lanes. Because of the snapshot character of the observations, no reliable conclusions can be drawn on the actual time-dependency.  相似文献

Abstract— All groups of chondritic meteorites contain discrete grains of forsteritic olivine with FeO contents below 1 wt% and high concentrations of refractory elements such as Ca, Al, and Ti. Ten such grains (52 to 754 μg) with minor amounts of adhering matrix were separated from the Allende meteorite. After bulk chemical analysis by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), some samples were analyzed with an electron microprobe and some with an ion microprobe. Matrix that accreted to the forsterite grains has a well‐defined unique composition, different from average Allende matrix in having higher Cr and lower Ni and Co contents, which implies limited mixing of Allende matrix. All samples have approximately chondritic relative abundances of refractory elements Ca, Al, Sc, and rare‐earth elements (REE), although some of these elements, such as Al, do not quantitatively reside in forsterite; whereas others (e.g., Ca) are intrinsic to forsterite. The chondritic refractory element ratios in bulk samples, the generally high abundance level of refractory elements, and the presence of Ca‐Al‐Ti‐rich glass inclusions suggest a genetic relationship of refractory condensates with forsteritic olivine. The Ca‐Al‐Ti‐rich glasses may have acted as nuclei for forsterite condensation. Arguments are presented that exclude an origin of refractory forsterite by crystallization from melts with compositions characteristic of Allende chondrules: (a) All forsterite grains have CaO contents between 0.5 and 0.7 wt% with no apparent zoning, requiring voluminous parental melts with 18 to 20 wt% CaO, far above the average CaO content of Allende chondrules. Similar arguments apply to Al contents. (b) The low FeO content of refractory forsterite of 0.2‐0.4 wt% imposes an upper limit of ~1 wt% of FeO on the parental melt, too low for ordinary and carbonaceous chondrule melts, (c) The Mn contents of refractory forsterites are between 30 to 40 ppm. This is at least one order of magnitude below the Mn content of chondrule olivines in all classes of meteorites. The observed Mn contents of refractory forsterite are much too low for equilibrium between olivine and melts of chondrule composition, (d) As shown earlier, refractory forsterites have O‐isotopic compositions different from chondrules (Weinbruch et al., 1993a). Refractory olivines in carbonaceous chondrites are found in matrix and in chondrules. The compositional similarity of both types was taken to indicate that all refractory forsterites formed inside chondrules (e.g., Jones, 1992). As refractory forsterite cannot have formed by crystallization from chondrule melts, we conclude that refractory forsterite from chondrules are relic grains that survived chondrule melting and probably formed in the same way as refractory forsterite enclosed in matrix. We favor an origin of refractory forsterite by condensation from an oxidized nebular gas.  相似文献

We have analyzed glasses in eight howardites with the aim of distinguishing their origins as impact melts or pyroclasts. Although theoretical calculations predict that pyroclastic eruptions could have taken place on Vesta, the occurrence of pyroclastic glasses in HED meteorites has not been documented. This study involved petrographic examination of textures, electron microprobe analysis of major and minor elements, and LA‐ICP‐MS analysis for selected trace elements. Previously documented textural and compositional differences between lunar impact‐melt and pyroclastic glasses partly guided this study. This work yielded no positive identification of pyroclastic glasses. The most likely explanation is that pyroclastic glasses never formed, either because Vesta contains insufficient volatiles to have powered explosive eruptions, or because eruptive conditions produced optically dense fire‐fountains that allowed melt drops to collect as lava ponds. The impact‐melt glasses were grouped (low‐alkali, Ca‐rich, and K‐rich) based on compositions. We suggest that these glasses are the result of impacts onto known HED lithologies. The low‐alkali glasses are impact melts of bulk HED lithologies. We hypothesize that the Ca‐rich and K‐rich glasses result from oversampling of plagioclase and of mesostasis that experienced liquid immiscibility, respectively, during micrometeorite impacts into eucrite targets.  相似文献

The importance of the interstellar magnetic field is studied in relation to the evolution of superbubbles with a three-dimensional (3D) numerical magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulation. A superbubble is a large supernova remnant driven by sequential supernova explosions in an OB association. Its evolution is affected by the density stratification in the galactic disc. After the superbubble size reaches 2–3 times the density scaleheight, it expands preferentially in the z -direction, until finally it can punch out a hole in the gas disc (blowout). On the other hand, the magnetic field running parallel to the galactic disc has the effect of preventing it from expanding in the direction perpendicular to the field. The density stratification and the magnetic fields have completely opposite effects on the evolution of the superbubble. We present results of a 3D MHD simulation in which both effects are included. As a result, it is concluded that when the magnetic field has a much larger scaleheight than the density, even for a model in which the bubble would blow out from the disc if the magnetic field were absent, a magnetic field with a strength of 5 μG can confine the bubble in | z |≲300 pc for ≃ 20 Myr (confinement). In a model in which the field strength decreases in the halo as B  ∝ ρ1/2, the superbubble eventually blows out like a model with B  = 0 even if the magnetic field in the mid-plane is as strong as B  = 5 μG.  相似文献

In the past, both magnetospheric substorms and solar flares have almost exclusively been discussed in terms of explosive magnetic reconnection. Such a model may conceptually be illustrated by the so-called tippy-bucket model, which causes sudden unloading processes, namely a sudden (catastrophic, stochastic, and unpredictable) conversion of stored magnetic energy. However, recent observations indicate that magnetospheric substorms can be understood as a result of a directly driven process which can conceptually be illustrated by the pitcher model in which the output rate varies in harmony with the input rate. It is also possible that solar flare phenomena are directly driven by a photospheric dynamo. Thus, explosive magnetic reconnection may simply be an unworkable hypothesis and may not be a puzzle to be solved as the primary energy supply process for magnetospheric substorms and solar flares.  相似文献

We present a catalog of 65 spectral lines in the range 176–207 Å recorded by the RES spectroheliograph in active regions and flares during the SPIRIT experiment onboard the CORONASF satellite. We have identified 51 lines. The relative intensities of lines recorded during the M6.5 (GOES) flare of September 16, 2001, are given. The data processing technique is discussed.  相似文献

The chondritic‐porous subset of interplanetary dust particles (CP‐IDPs) are thought to have a cometary origin. Since the CP‐IDPs are anhydrous and unaltered by aqueous processes that are common to chondritic organic matter (OM), they represent the most pristine material of the solar system. However, the study of IDP OM might be hindered by their further alteration by flash heating during atmospheric entry, and we have limited understanding on how short‐term heating influences their organic content. In order to investigate this problem, five CP‐IDPs were studied for their OM contents, distributions, and isotopic compositions at the submicro‐ to nanoscale levels. The OM contained in the IDPs in this study spans the spectrum from primitive OM to that which has been significantly processed by heat. Similarities in the Raman D bands of the meteoritic and IDP OMs indicate that the overall gain in the sizes of crystalline domains in response to heating is similar. However, the Raman ΓG values of the OM in all of the five IDPs clearly deviate from those of chondritic OM that had been processed during a prolonged episode of parent body heating. Such disparity suggests that the nonaromatic contents of the OM are different. Short duration heating further increases the H/C ratio and reduces the δ13C and δD values of the IDP OM. Our findings suggest that IDP OM contains a significant proportion of disordered C with low H content, such as sp2 olefinic C=C, sp3 C–C, and/or carbonyl contents as bridging material.  相似文献

Assuming that damped Lyman- α (DLA) systems are galactic discs, we calculate the corresponding evolution of metal abundances. We use detailed multizone models of galactic chemical evolution (reproducing successfully the observed properties of disc galaxies) and appropriate statistics (including geometrical probability factors) to calculate the average metallicity as a function of redshift. The results are compatible with available observations, provided that observational biases are taken into account , as suggested by Boissé et al. In particular, high column density and high-metallicity systems are not detected because the light of backround quasars is severely extinguished, while low column density and low-metallicity systems are not detectable through their absorption lines by current surveys. We show that these observational constraints lead to a 'no-evolution' picture for the DLA metallicity, which does not allow us to draw strong conclusions about the nature of those systems or about their role in 'cosmic chemical evolution'.  相似文献

Abstract— A quantitative analysis is presented for the irradiation contributions of the short‐lived nuclides, specifically 26Al, by the X‐wind scenario in the early solar system. The analysis is based on the comprehensive numerical simulations of the scenario that involves thermal processing of protoCAIs during the decades long X‐wind cycle. It would be difficult to explain the canonical value of 26Al/27Al in Ca‐Al‐rich inclusions on the basis of its inferred irradiation yields. Hence, the bulk inventory of 26Al in the early solar system was not produced by the X‐wind scenario. We suggest the predominant occurrence of gradual flares compared to impulsive flares in the early solar system as in the case of the modern solar flares. One tenth of the bulk 26Al was only produced by irradiation in case the entire solar inventory of 10Be was produced by local irradiation. The bulk 26Al inventory along with 60Fe was probably synthesized by a massive star. We present a qualitative model of the astrophysical settings for the formation of the solar system on the basis of a survey of the presently active star forming regions. We hypothesize that the formation of the solar system could have occurred almost contemporaneously with the formation of the massive star within a single stellar cluster. As the massive star eventually exploded as supernova Ib/c subsequent to Wolf‐Rayet stages, the short‐lived nuclides were probably injected into the solar proto‐planetary disc. The dynamically evolving stellar cluster eventually dispersed within the initial ?10 million years prior to the major planetary formation episodes.  相似文献

We present observations of what may be the inner region of a lunar mini-magnetosphere. If so, these likely represent the first such observations. Previous studies of solar wind interaction with lunar crustal magnetic fields found increased particle fluxes associated with magnetic amplifications, suggesting a shock/sheath region. The central density cavity expected in the inner mini-magnetosphere (if analogous to other planetary magnetospheres) has proven elusive. We now present Lunar Prospector fly-throughs of a density cavity near a strong crustal magnetic source in the solar wind, and compare these unique observations with typical orbits in the solar wind and wake. We observed the density cavity on two consecutive orbits on July 14, 1999 with optimal viewing geometry, downstream from one of the strongest lunar crustal sources (an anomaly centered at 235E, 20S), during very unusual solar wind conditions. We found no other similar features in the solar wind in 7 months of low-altitude orbits, suggesting that fully formed lunar mini-magnetospheres are rare and/or difficult to observe from orbit.  相似文献

We present and analyse new R -band frames of the gravitationally lensed double quasar FBQ 0951+2635. These images were obtained with the 1.5-m AZT-22 Telescope at Maidanak (Uzbekistan) during the 2001–2006 period. Previous results in the R band (1999–2001 period) and the new data allow us to discuss the dominant kind of microlensing variability in FBQ 0951+2635. The time evolution of the flux ratio A / B does not favour the continuous production of short-time-scale (∼months) flares in the faintest quasar component B (crossing the central region of the lensing galaxy). Instead of a rapid variability scenario, the observations are consistent with the existence of a long-time-scale fluctuation. The flux ratio shows a bump during the 2003–2004 period and a quasi-flat trend in more recent epochs. Apart from the global behaviour of A / B , we study the intra-year variability over the first semester of 2004, which is reasonably well sampled. Short-time-scale microlensing is not detected in that period. Additional data in the i band (from new i -band images taken in 2007 with the 2-m Liverpool Robotic Telescope at La Palma, Canary Islands) also indicate the absence of short-time-scale events in 2007.  相似文献

Very high resolution Viking Orbiter images (8–17 m per pixel) have been used to investigate the morphology of Martian rampart crater ejecta blankets and the crater interiors, with the objective of identifying the fluidizing medium for the ejecta and the physical properties of the target rock. The occurrence of well-preserved, small-scale pressure ridges and scour marks, evidence for subsidence around isolated buried blocks in partially eroded ejecta lobes, and the stability of crater walls and distal ramparts argue for ground ice being the dominant state for volatiles within the target rocks at the time of impact. Rare examples of channels (190–650 m wide) on the surfaces of ejecta blankets, and on the inner walls of the crater Cerulli, indicate that in some instances liquid water was incorporated into the ejecta during its emplacement. No morphological evidence has been found to discount the idea that atmospheric effects were partially responsible for ejecta fluidization, but it is clear that these effects were not the sole reason for the characteristic lobate deposits surrounding at least some rampart craters on Mars.  相似文献

Abstract– Samples returned by the Stardust mission from comet 81P/Wild 2 provide an unequaled opportunity to investigate cometary formation and evolution. Crystalline silicates have been identified in impact craters in Stardust Al foil, yet their origin is ambiguous. They may be original cometary components, or they may have grown from melt generated by impact. We have now studied experimental impacts of the calcium silicate mineral wollastonite, using scanning and transmission electron microscopy to document the relationship between impact feature shape and crystal lattice orientation in impact residue. Wollastonite can have a characteristic acicular habit, forming crater shapes that indicate crystal orientation upon impact. From extracted impact residue, we determined the lattice orientation of crystalline material for comparison with the whole particle orientation. We assume that crystallization from melt, without surviving seed nuclei, should result in randomly oriented crystallite growth, with no preferred direction for individual crystals. However, we find that the majority of crystalline material in the residue retains b‐axis orientation parallel to the long axis of the crater form. This, together with impact parameter calculations and lack of Al incorporation by the residue (suggesting melting did not occur), indicates that these crystals and, by analogy, the majority of Al‐free crystalline silicates in Stardust foil, are surviving remnants of the impactor. Furthermore, amorphous wollastonite residue probably did not form via melting and subsequent quenching, but instead by high‐pressure amorphization or degradation of unquenchable phases. Finally, one crystal studied appears to be a new high‐pressure/temperature polymorph of CaSiO3, indicating that such polymorphs may be observed in Stardust residues in craters.  相似文献

Lunar meteorite MacAlpine Hills (MAC) 88105 is a well‐studied feldspathic regolith breccia dominated by rock and mineral fragments from the lunar highlands. Thin section MAC 88105,159 contains a small rock fragment, 400 × 350 μm in size, which is compositionally anomalous compared with other MAC 88105 lithic components. The clast is composed of olivine and plagioclase with minor pyroxene and interstitial devitrified glass component. It is magnesian, akin to samples in the lunar High Mg‐Suite, and also alkali‐rich, akin to samples in the lunar High Alkali Suite. It could represent a small fragment of late‐stage interstitial melt from an Mg‐Suite parent lithology. However, olivine and pyroxene in the clast have Fe/Mn ratios and minor element concentrations that are different from known types of lunar lithologies. As Fe/Mn ratios are notably indicative of planetary origin, the clast could either (1) have a unique lunar magmatic source, or (2) have a nonlunar origin (i.e., consist of achondritic meteorite debris that survived delivery to the lunar surface). Both hypotheses are considered and discussed.  相似文献

Recently a number of studies have identified small lunar geologic structures to be <100 Ma in age using standard remote sensing techniques. Here we present new crater size frequency distributions (CSFDs) and model ages using craters D > 10 m for five small target units: one irregular mare patch (IMP) in Mare Nubium and four regions located on lunar wrinkle ridges in Mare Humorum. For comparison we also date another IMP found in a recent study in Mare Tranquillitatis (Braden et al. 2014 ). Absolute model age (AMA) derivation corresponds to 46 ± 5 Ma and 22 ± 1 Ma for Nubium and Sosigenes IMP, respectively. We show that for IMPs and in nearby control mare regions, similar production-like cumulative log–log SFD slopes of −3 are observed. In contrast, control mare regions in Mare Humorum exhibit shallower equilibrium slopes from −1.83 to −2. Three out of four wrinkle ridges appear to be in equilibrium but with crater lifetimes lower than on the corresponding maria. Low crater frequencies on one wrinkle ridge result in an age of 8.6 ± 1 Ma. This study region contains 80% fresh craters, which suggests that the crater population is still in production indicative of a recent resurfacing event.  相似文献

Cosmochemists have relied on CI carbonaceous chondrites as proxies for chemical composition of the non-volatile elements in the solar system because these meteorites are fine-grained, chemically homogeneous, and have well-determined bulk compositions that agree with that of the solar photosphere, within uncertainties. Here we report the discovery of a calcium-aluminum-rich inclusion (CAI) in the Ivuna CI chondrite. CAIs are chemically highly fractionated compared to CI composition, consisting of refractory elements and having textures that either reflect condensation from nebular gas or melting in a nebular environment. The CAI we found is a compact type A CAI with typical 16O-rich oxygen. However, it shows no evidence of 26Al, which was present when most CAIs formed. Finding a CAI in a CI chondrite raises serious questions about whether CI chondrites are a reliable proxy for the bulk composition of the solar system. Too much CAI material would show up as mismatches between the CI composition and the composition of the solar photosphere. Although small amounts of refractory material have previously been identified in CI chondrites, this material is not abundant enough to significantly perturb the bulk compositions of CI chondrites. The agreement between the composition of the solar photosphere and CI chondrites allows no more than ~0.5 atom% of CAI-like material to have been added to CI chondrites. As the compositions of CI chondrites, carbonaceous asteroids, and the solar photosphere are better determined, we will be able to reduce the uncertainties in our estimates of the composition of the solar system.  相似文献

Fluctuations in the solar wind plasma and magnetic field are well described by the sum of two power law distributions. It has been postulated that these distributions are the result of two independent processes: turbulence, which contributes mainly to the smaller fluctuations, and crossing the boundaries of flux tubes of coronal origin, which dominates the larger variations. In this study we explore the correspondence between changes in the magnetic field with changes in other solar wind properties. Changes in density and temperature may result from either turbulence or coronal structures, whereas changes in composition, such as the alpha-to-proton ratio are unlikely to arise from in-transit effects. Observations spanning the entire ACE dataset are compared with a null hypothesis of no correlation between magnetic field discontinuities and changes in other solar wind parameters. Evidence for coronal structuring is weaker than for in-transit turbulence, with only ∼ 25% of large magnetic field discontinuities associated with a significant change in the alpha-to-proton ratio, compared to ∼ 40% for significant density and temperature changes. However, note that a lack of detectable alpha-to-proton signature is not sufficient to discount a structure as having a solar origin.  相似文献

Abstract— Impact cratering is a ubiquitous geological process on the terrestrial planets. Meteorite impact craters are the most visible product of impact events, but there is a growing recognition that large aerial bursts or airbursts should occur relatively frequently throughout geological time. In this contribution, we report on an unusual impact glass‐the Dakhleh Glass (DG)–which is distributed over an area of ?400 km 2of the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt. This region preserves a rich history of habitation stretching back to over 400,000 years before the emergence of Homo sapiens. We report on observations made during recent fieldwork and subsequent analytical analyses that strengthen previous suggestions that the DG formed during an impact event. The wide distribution and large size of DG specimens (up to ?50 cm across), the chemistry (e.g., CaO and Al2O3 contents up to ?25 and ?18 wt, respectively), the presence of lechatelierite and burnt sediments, and the inclusion of clasts and spherules in the DG is inconsistent with known terrestrial processes of glass formation. The age and other textural characteristics rule out a human origin. Instead, we draw upon recent numerical modeling of airbursts to suggest that the properties of DG, coupled with the absence of a confirmed crater, can best be explained by melting of surficial sediments as a result of a large airburst event. We suggest that glass produced by such events should, therefore, be more common in the rock record than impact craters, assuming that the glass formed in a suitable preserving environment.  相似文献
