General.—The Surplus of Revenue over Expenditure was again a record, as the following figures show: 1933, 4,538;1934, 185,387; 1935, 196,669; 1936, 225,148.

Abstract

General.—The excess of Revenue over Expenditure reached the unprecedented figure of 252,867; a net increase on 1936 of 23,018 in spite of a fall of 20,131 in Mining Revenue.

General.—During the year the Committee of Administration reviewed the policy and administration of the Department and recommended no change.     

SARAWAK LANDS AND SURVEY DEPARTMENT, 1940

Abstract

Financial.-The revenue collection for the year was 440,790.30, consisting of Land revenue 336,422.97 and Mining revenue 104,360.33. The expenditure for the year was 206,476.02, of which only 192.05 was Special. This does not include salaries, amounting to 14,313, of Officers seconded for Food Control. Expenditure was again below normal because of the secondment of staff to other duties.

Financial.—The revenue collection for the year was 479,591.75, consisting of Lands and Survey Revenue 356,087.52 and Mining Revenue 123,504.23.     

CADASTRAL SURVEY AND LAND RECORDS

Abstract

We regret that, owing to illness and the pressure of other demands on them in the same field, it has been necessary to interrupt the publication of the papers on cadastral subjects which Sir Ernest Dowson and Mr. Sheppard are contributing to the Review. We hope, however, to resume this valuable and interesting series in the January 1947 issue.— ED., E.S.R.     

REPRESENTATIVE COLLECTION OF CADASTRAL SURVEY AND LAND RECORDS

Abstract

The exhibition of cadastral maps and of land-registry and land-revenue records arranged at the Science Museum in July 1931 in connexion with the second Conference of Empire Surveyors was, we believe, the first of its kind to be held anywhere. The idea took shape slowly and required more preliminary discussion and preparation than had been anticipated. This caused the issue of notices explaining the exact nature of the exhibition to be delayed, and therefore handicapped participation, particularly by countries at a distance from England. The response made under these difficult conditions was remarkable. A most excellent and instructive series of exhibits was received from the responsible public services in the United Kingdom, all the Dominions, five Indian provinces, eleven Colonies and Protectorates, three Mandated Territories and six Foreign Countries. The resulting exhibition was so much appreciated that the desire was expressed by the Conference that the exhibits should be retained in some convenient centre in London as the nucleus of a permanent collection for reference and comparative study.
