THE INTERNATIONAL UNION OF GEODESY AND GEOPHYSICS, 1948

Abstract

The 8th general assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (lUGG) took place in Oslo by invitation of the Norwegian National Committee. A considerable number of delegates had arrived by the 17th August, for which day preliminary meetings of the Executive Committees and Councils of the Union and of the several Associations were arranged. The formal opening in the Aula of Oslo University began at 10.30 on the 19th. It was honoured by the presence of H.M. the King of Norway.     

THE INTERNATIONAL UNION OF GEODESY AND GEOPHYSICS AT LISBON

Abstract

On the 17th September, 1933, the Fifth General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics was opened by General Carmono, President of the Republic of Portugal, in the hall normally occupied by the Portuguese Parliament at Lisbon. Great Britain sent to this meeting of the Union twenty-two delegates, of whom the majority travelled to Lisbon by the S.S. Arlanza.

Abstract

The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics held its Sixth General Assembly at Edinburgh in September 1936. This paper is not a formal account of the proceedings at Edinburgh, but is intended to convey an idea of what happens at these Conferences and of the geodetic work being done by the countries adhering to the Union.     

THE WASHINGTON (1939) CONFERENCE OF THE UNION OF GEODESY AND GEOPHYSICS

Abstract

For the first time in the Western Hemisphere the Union met in conference in Washington between the dates 4th and 15th September 1939. Though rumours of indefinite postponement were current in the Press, there was never any intention that the Conference should not be held according to plan, which action was supported throughout by the State Department, without whose effective co-operation the event could not have succeeded. The fears of world-wide cataclysm, too soon turned into grim reality, no doubt influenced the attendance of European delegates; but the influx of representatives of the United States and Canada was correspondingly greater, and contributed to the success of the assemblies. In a sense the Conference gained by the reduction of members, for more time was available for the cultivation of former acquaintanceships; moreover, in the fraternizing of the European delegates with American scientists an opportunity was given to reveal the individuality behind well-known names, which helps so much towards mutual understanding.     

ADJUSTMENT OF THE SECONDARY TRIANGULATION OF SOUTH AFRICA

Abstract

The Secondary Triangulation of South Africa consists of a uniform network of triangles of from 5- to 10-mile sides, enmeshed in the Geodetic and Primary Triangulations. As a rule the Primary Triangulation is rigorously adjusted by least squares, and the Secondary made to conform to it by an approximately rigorous method which was introduced into the Trigonometrical Survey in 1920 by the late Dr van der Sterr.     

SIR DAVID GILL AND THE GEODETIC SURVEY OF SOUTH AFRICA AND THE ARC OF THE 30TH MERIDIAN

Abstract

In the memoir of the late Capt. G. T. McCaw which appeared in the January number of this Review (vii, 47,2), reference was made to the part which the late Sir David Gill played in the origin of the work on the survey of the Arc of the 30th Meridian in Africa. This year is the centenary of Gill's birth, as he was born in June 1843, and it is therefore timely to give some account of his work during his long term of office as Her Majesty's Astronomer at the Cape which resulted inthe inception and completion of the Geodetic Survey of South Africa and the survey of the Arc to the southern shores of Lake Tanganyika. He died on 24th January 1914.     

RELATIONS OF BEACON AND DEED-PLAN IN SOUTH AFRICA

Abstract

MR. C. O. GILBERT'S article on “Beacon versus Deed-plan” (E.S.R., Jan. 1932, pp. 98–99) raises a question of very great importance in those countries which have a system of land registration. In addition to the legal and technical aspects of the question, it raises the very important question of preservation of beacons and replacement of lost beacons. As he mentions the South African practice, the experience of the Transvaal may be of interest to readers, the more so as the case, The African and Buropean Investment Co., Ltd. and Others versus John Warren and Others, which he quotes, concerned farms situated in the Transvaal. I also wish to refer specially to the Transvaal, because there the diagram or deed-plan is of great legal force when there is a conflict between the position of a beacon on the ground and the position accorded it by a confirmed diagram.     

THE HEIGHT DETERMINATION OF MOUNT KILIMANJARO TANGANYIKA,EAST AFRICA

Abstract

The following account of the expedition which succeeded in fixing a new height for Mount Kilimanjaro is taken in the main from the diary of the party that made the necessary observations, but, for the sake of clarity, it is as well to set out here a very brief statement of the position.     

CARTOGRAPHIC PERIODICALS OF EASTERN EUROPE AND THE SOVIET UNION

The Chair of the Moscow University Department of Cartography surveys the current cartographic periodicals of the USSR and Eastern Europe, with special emphasis on the USSR, Hungary, East Germany and Poland. The number and relative importance of each country's periodicals reflect general levels of economic and scientific development, although periodicals even from small countries with relatively unfamiliar languages of publication make significant contributions. The Soviet Referativnyi zhurnal, kartografiya supplies Russian-reading cartographers with information on hundreds of cartographic publications worldwide. It is not clear th at a knowledge of the position of the “centre” of any area, be it a county or a continent, serves any useful purpose, though it may, perhaps, help to define our ideas as to the shape of the area in question. Such information may take its place amongst those contents of the mind which are rather of the nature of art than of science, and minister harmlessly to our curiosity.
